Diploma Thesis Speculative design | 9th and 10th semester | Spring 2019 Supervisor Prof. P.Dragonas Individual Project Grade 10/10 The subject of my Thesis is the speculative design of four points in a 2065 AD version of the city of Patras. The design process stems from the story of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll (1865). The four points define the chapters of a new narrative. In my version of the story the main character is X-ALICE_42. She is a cyborg: an augmented human who carries equipment which connects her permanently to the Cloud augmenting her physical environment. X-ALICE visits four points in the city: The “Fiber Hole”, the “Data Memorial”, the “Disconnected Field” and the “Relay Observatory”. These points are essential urban infrastructures that meet the needs of citizens in future Patras. Each point refers to a different part of Carroll’s original story.

FIBER HOLE
Similar to Alice’s fall into the Rabbit Hole, X-ALICE, while walking through an arcade of Patras, falls into a manhole. She lands in the underground piping network of the city. The increasing needs for information transmission have resulted in large fiber optic tunnels. X-ALICE wanders through the tunnels of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and the Wide Area Network (WAN) until she finds the next manhole leading back to the surface of the city.

DATA MEMORIAL
This is where digital souls of the dead citizens are stored. The building serves as both a data center and a cemetery. It is placed at the edge of a pier at the old port of the city, into the sea. The “Data Memorial” consists of two distinct parts: a compact underwater base, where information is stored in racks of servers, and a light structure above the sea level. In the latter, visitors can access information of the deceased in individual cubicles. The point is related to Alice’s “lake of tears” in the original story as both refer to sorrow and the element of water.

DISCONNECTED FIELD
B
A
In this technological version of the city, where reality is augmented by digital information, the need for off-line spaces has been born. A new architectural typology is created into the urban voids of the city. The Disconnected Field is a curved Faraday Cage which blocks the electromagnetic signals. It is placed on a new level over the humble constructions of the void. At the top surface of the Cage a grid of beams runs which supports some spherical capsules. These are constructed by radiation resistant materials which further isolate the users. The blockade of signal is related to the locked doors Alice comes across around the hall after her fall.

RELAY OBSERVATORY
The signals in Patras of 2065 AD have multiplied and the 5G network is supported by gigantic antennas. These primary antennas relay the signal to others, smaller. The “Relay Observatory is placed at the top part of the city, based on an old block of flats. It is consisted of a thin needle shaped core and a perimetric ring which hosts an observatory as well as a Master Switching Center. The geometry and the program of the observatory refers to the physical transformation that happened to the original Alice, as her neck elongated over the forest.

Creating green areas in the cities Competition WWF Hellas | Spring 2017 Collaborators E.Arapakou, C.Grigoropoulou The competition gave us the task of creating green interventions in the greek cities. Our main idea is to activate the urban voids, creating temporary mini green cores. To begin with, we attempted to create a model that could fit in any urban void between party walls, no matter its dimensions. As an example the city center of Patras was used, in a circular area of 1km diameter. However, it is assumed that our proposal could be applied to any greek city. In our case, we mapped the different typologies of urban voids we encountered in Patras. Given the fact that the voids could be built at any moment, we chose to intervene in a reversible way. The proposal is a variety of thematic green oasis, spread around the city, which isolate the visitor from the urban context. The visitor encounters a white cube in between the city blocks. This cube works as threshold to the green world unravelling behind it. After passing through the cube, the guest walks on a metallic structure that twists around the tree trunks. Gradually he is lifted from the city ground and vanishes inside the foliage. Along his way up and down back to the cube there are various stop points, hosting different kinds of herbaceous vegetation. The choice of plants is made taking in consideration the Greek climate and the urban context, the maximum height and the special characteristics of the species, their cost to be bought and cultivated. The vegetation is not planted directly in the city ground but in huge pots, forming a movable forest. In case of the owner’s will to use the urban void, the plants will be easily removed and placed to another urban gap or replanted to another green space of the city.

Design Studio Museum Design | 6th Semester | Spring 2015 Supervisor Prof. A. Proimou Collaborator E.Arapakou
The site of the museum is a platform at the end of Gounari street, where Patras Port Authority used to be located. The old building has been a fine example of Greek modern architecture. At the same time the unexploited coastal front around the building is misused as parking space. The main intention of the project is to create a museum that could be both a hub on a coastal promenade as well as a meeting point of the city. To begin with, the seaside space gets cleared off vehicles. An organized parking area takes form inside the new building. This way, the promenade can freely unravel next to the sea, around the platform and finally on an inclined square at the heart of the new building. The new structure is the result of an extension of the old modern building towards the sea. Two opposing programs coexist in this new structure: the museum and the parking area. The programs get interleaved with the tendency of the one to extend towards the other. In the interior of the museum, the visitor follows a circular route. In this route, the general exhibition is interrupted by spaces of a smaller scale. These spaces, either host independent collections, or remain empty, as windows to the city or to the garage. The building, in order to establish a strong relation with urban life, hosts other programs as well: seminar rooms, working spaces, gallery spaces, a library and a restaurant. In the end, the new museum, being mixed with a functional infrastructure of the city, becomes an integral part of urban life.

Design Studio Urban and architectural design | 8th semester | Spring 2016 Supervisor Prof. G. Panetsos Collaborators E.M.Kapetana Missolonghi is a small seaside city in western Greece. Despite its size, Missolonghi is a place of historical and high environmental importance, with Klisova lagoon being one of the biggest ecosystems of the country. Furthermore, Missolonghi presents a touristic and commercial destination thanks to its close relation to water. However, the city didn’t use its full potential to develop. Our study area is located at the south of the historical center. This area hasn’t been of use until today, creating a terrain vague between the lagoon and the port of the city. Our proposal uses the pre-existing mappings of the city as a starting point, trying to gather the public movements in three zones of different character. Firstly, the main pedestrian street of the historical center, Mayer street, is extended to the South, reaching the road crossing the lagoon. Secondly, a cultural zone is created vertically to the previous, bridging the port with the lagoon. Through the intersection of the two axes passes by a third one, a roadway, that extends an existing one until it reaches the lagoon coast. The urban canvas at the area of intervention, results from the main actions described above, in line with the scale of the historical center. Two triangular-shaped squares take form at the edges of the second west to east zone. The western one, being close to the port, has commercial character. Along the cultural zone towards the eastern square, there are a sports center, a performance center and a marine museum/shipyard. This horizontal zone divides our area of intervention in two parts. The northern region is residential, with three types of housing expanding until the stream. There, a riverside walk leads to the museum. The southern region of our area is devoted to commerce. At the end of the pedestrian street there is a motel and an observation post looking towards the lagoon.

R O / O M Room 18 European Competition Domes | Spring 2016 Collaborator M.Dimas 6th Honourable Mention The Room 18 Competition had as its subject the designing of the interior of a typical bedroom in a Greek four-star urban hotel of a total area of 18-24m2, whose basic characteristics are determined by the specifications of GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organisation). We were asked to present ways of creatively re-interpreting and transcending these specifications in a response to the likely wishes and expectations of the contemporary traveller. In a time of coach surfing and hostels, today’s traveller seems to us to be content with the bare necessities. To be precise all one need is somewhere to leave one’s luggage, a nice bed and a bathroom. Therefore, starting point of the design was a clear distinction between the primary and secondary needs of the traveller. The room is divided in two material zones. The basic needs, using cast material consolidate in a continuous ribbon in the room. Sleep, the “star” need, is pushed outside the main volume of the room and is underlined by a prolonged window for the lying down traveller to look off. The cast ribbon continuous as a luggage surface, a built bath tab and a sink. On the other hand, the secondary needs of the traveller, as well as his main movements, form a wooden zone in the room. What appears to be a wall made of wood, is actually a versatile piece of furniture that each one can adjust as he pleases. This unit includes closets, chairs, a table and a mini bar. The total area of the room is 24m2, while its height reaches 2.80m. At the northern facade of the room there is a small roofed terrace.

Iceland Northern Lights Rooms Competition Bee Breeders | Spring 2018 Collaborators E.Arapakou, A.M.Asoniti, E.M.Kapetana
The competition gave us the task of envisioning a concept for a guest house, where visitors can privately observe and directly engage with the unusual geographic setting. The chosen location adjacent to Mývatn lake, is a site of 9 hectares in the northeast region of Iceland. We were asked to deliver a design proposal for accommodations to house permanent hosts and temporary guests, as well as for a barn for Icelandic horses. No permanent construction can be built within 200 metres of the lake, so the guest rooms had to be moveable in order to be relocated to other sites. Our proposal consists of a permanent linear structure, on the edge of the construction zone, in which the transportable guest modules can attach to. The linear building, is placed at an angle of 45º from Northern direction. This provides an ideal view both of the lake and the Aurora Borealis Lights. The permanent structure is developed in three levels, according to the contours of the site. It shelters the private spaces of the hosts as well as the common spaces for the guests. The whole building is covered by an inclined wooden roof rising from the ground, facing the lake. A rails system connects the permanent structure with the coast. In this way the transportable bedrooms, slide on their adjusted wheels towards the Mývatn lake. The place left empty by the modules in the front elevation of the linear structure works as alternating terraces. Finally, a path starting from the main building is headed southeast leading to the barn. This circular structure follows the same construction logic of the wooden skeleton as the linear one. It is located remotely with relation to the site, aiming to its further activation.

Design Studio Urban Design | 6th Semester | Spring 2015 Supervisor Prof. A. Rodi Collaborator A.M.Asoniti Ancient Olympia is located in the west Peloponnese, at the riverside of Kladeos river. The new settlement has developed further north, on the other bank of the river. Due to the historic value of the area, the city has been a famous touristic destination. Besides the Unesco Archeological Site, there is also an Archeological Museum to visit. However, there isn’t a strong connection between the new settlement and the Museum with the Archeological Site. The subject of the studio was to design a riverside linear park to activate the in-between landscape as a walking space, considering both the natural and historic context. The starting point of the park is a square located to the northern side of the Museum, while the ending point of it is a parking space southern of the Archeological Site. Along the promenade, there are three more main stopping points as well as one more access point at the beginning of the Site. The design of the park is not to invasive to the environment. This is why the marking of the path as well as the educational information are delivered discretely on a continuous copper ribbon on the ground. Another main point of interest during the walk is the vegetation. The area in general has abundant Mediterranean flora, that is recently restored after a huge fire happened in 2007. The path uses the plants as marking points of orientation. The route is divided in zones of different vegetation species along the way, accordingly to various historical and environmental points of interest.
