SUSTAINABLE URBAN MOBILITY COMPONENTS DENSITY – HIGHER DENSITIES CAN PROVIDE SHORTER DISTANCES BETWEEN HOME AND WORK USE – MIXED USE CAN HELP REDUCING THE NEED FOR AUTO-VEHICLE CONTINUITY – DEVELOPING CENTER AREAS, FILLING EMPTY SPACES AND REQUALIFYING DEGRADED AREAS CAN REDUCE DISTANCE AND ENCOURAGE CITY OCCUPATION SHAPE – HIGHER CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN STREETS, BIKE LANES AND SIDEWALKS REDUCES DISTANCE AND ENCOURAGE ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF TRANSPORT ABOUT BRASILIA DESIGNED BY LUCIO COSTA (1956–ORIGINAL DRAWINGS IN THE PREVIOUS PAGE) – 1ST PLACE IN CONTEST DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO MOVE THE CAPITAL FROM RIO DE JANEIRO TO A MORE CENTRAL LOCATION WORLD HERITAGE SITE MODERNIST URBANISM RESIDENTIAL AREA DIVIDED IN "NEIGHBORHOOD UNITS" COMPOSED OF FOUR "SUPER-BLOCKS" SECTORED CITY EXAMPLE OF URBAN SPRAWL LARGE AMOUNT OF EMPTY AREAS CASE OF STUDY TWO ADJACENT "NEIGHBORHOOD UNITS" COMPOSED BY "SOUTH SUPER-BLOCKS" 308, 307, 108, AND 107 AND 208, 207, 408, AND 407 DISTANCE IN TIME PEDESTRIAN WALKS ON AVERAGE 3 MPH FIRST MAP – FIVE MINUTES WALK SECOND MAP – TEN MINUTES WALK

CONNECTIVITY THE EXISTING BIKE LANE IN THE AREA IS VERY POOR AND UNCONNECTED SO IT IS PROPOSED A NEW GENEROUS BIKE GRID CONNECTING BUS STOPS AND THE SUBWAY STATION EXPRESS BIKE PATH IT IS ALSO PROPOSED AN EXPRESS BIKE PATH CONNECTING SOUTH AND NORTH WING IN THE EXISTING CENTER LANE OF RESIDENTIAL AXIS SAFETY IS A MUST! THERE ARE NO CROSSINGS IN THE NINE MILES LONG RESIDENTIAL AXIS TREES SINCE BRAZIL IS A TROPICAL COUNTRY, TREES ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO PROTECT AND ATRACT PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS TWO ADJACENT LANES ARE TRANSFORMED IN A LINEAR PARK FILLED BY TREES TRAFFIC LIGHT TO IMPROVE THE CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN THE TWO "NEIGHBORHOOD UNITS" IT IS PROPOSED TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN THE RESIDENTIAL AXIS THE IDEA OF BRINGING PEOPLE TO THE STREET LEVEL WOULD MAKE THE CITY MUCH MORE VIVID, ACCESSIBLE, INTERESTING AND SAFE FROM THE BACK TO THE FRONT ONCE A NEW BLOCK OF STORES FACING THE RESIDENTIAL "SUPER-BLOCK" IS CREATED, THE BACK SIDE OF THE COMMERCIAL AREA TURNS INTO FRONT IT FEELS MUCH MORE SAFE AND THE DISTANCES SEEM TO BE MUCH SHORTER WHEN THE SIDEWALK FACES THE FRONT INSTEAD THE BACK OF BUILDINGS MIXED USE ADDING MIXED USE TO THE EMPTY AREA IN STUDY COULD HELP IMPROVING MOBILITY, INCREASING DENSITY AND SAFETY WORLD HERITAGE SITE A WORLD HERITAGE SITE SHOULD LIVE AND STAY ALIVE A WORLD HERITAGE SITE SHOULD BE DEVELOPED
