OUR MAP
The White Tower of Thessaloniki is located 38km away from Ossa. In order to get there, you have to travel to Lagadas and then to Thessaloniki. You will head to the sea and there you will find this spectacular view with White Tower and Alexander the Great.
THE HISTORY OF THE MONUMENT The White Tower is a cylindrical construction that was built long ago when Ottomans ruled Greece, and it was used as an observation tower.
After that, it was a jail for many years. it is said that it was called the tower of blood, because many people died there. But one day they made a prisoner paint it white , as an exchange for his freedom. because they didn't want to have such a bad name. From then it is called The White Tower. It was whitewashed after Greeks gained control of the city in 1912 and it is the symbol of Thessaloniki.
During the World War II the Germans protected the monument from bombing by painting the White Tower with houses an trees. The pilots saw the houses and couldn’t bomb it!!!
Today, The White Tower is a museum. You can visit it, and from the stairs you should head to the top, to watch the sea and the city of Thessaloniki.
THE HISTORY OF THE MONUMENT The statue of Alexander on his horse, Buckefalus is a few metres away. Alexander the Great was a Greek king of Macedons, who lead the Greeks to conquest Persia. Seeking the "ends of the world and the great outer sea", he invaded India in 326BC but turned back as a demand of his homesick troops.
