One of Larry Smith’s favorite features is the underwater engine exhaust that reduces emission noise, making the Aquila a quiet ride. And after a daylong run, he can pull up the easily accessible engine room compartments to stand on the cool running Volvo Penta diesel engine with V Drive gearbox. The Smith’s have two standard solar panels and have upgraded to six-house batteries (four is standard). They use the Victron Energy Venus GX, BMV -12, and SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 to monitor the solar production and state of the batteries. Of course these all tie into the Victron Quattro 5000 charger/inverter. For backup, there is a Fischer Panda 12 Kvh generator that can also supply electricity to the boat and the inverter/charger. The set up has allowed the Smiths to go 31 days

asterCraft Boat Holdings officially expanded into the day boat category with a new brand, Aviara.
Following calculated research and nearly three years of development, Aviara offers a totally new luxury day boat experience. The first of a fleet of vessels 30-feet and over, Aviara’s AV32 is a 32-foot luxury bowrider that creates a flawless open water experience rooted in precision control, guest entertainment and premium allday comfort and luxury. “We’re thrilled to introduce Aviara and add yet another premium brand to MasterCraft Boat Holdings’ portfolio. The luxury day boat category is a growing segment that complements our existing product portfolio. With Aviara, we’re excited to expand in the segment with a long-term focus,” said Terry McNew, President and CEO of MasterCraft Boat Holdings. “Beyond the industry-leading product innovation and quality we’re bringing to the luxury day boat segment, Aviara will also deliver an unparalleled customer experience through one of the nation’s most premier and expansive distribution networks.” Born from a team within MasterCraft, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, Aviara performs with unrivaled precision, enabling captains to instantly elevate every escape. The AV32’s aesthetic begins with a clean, striking shape and an interior that exudes European styling. The boat uniquely features an inviting open deck layout that puts entertainment and social interaction first. Aviara engineers designed the boat around how guests naturally utilize the interior, developing an open, comfortable seating arrangement with unique function in the bow and cockpit - including the industry’s first transom barstool-style seating for a stadium seating effect that allows more guests to be accommodated at the transom.

of the time they were going little more than a fast idle. Target audience? Well, let’s just say that it was a rather stately crowd, enjoying a few cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as they wound down their day. Us kids wouldn’t go near them as they looked anything but fun. Obviously times have changed. Today’s pontoon market is arguably the hottest segment in boating, growing at a rapid pace and appealing to far more than sunset cruise senior citizens. They put the “party” in party barge with music, LED lighting, and some of the most comfortable, laid-back seating options found in the boating market. But lest you think that sounds like just a rowdier crew making the sunset rounds, consider pontoons now also embrace power and handling. While there will always be an audience for affordable, low-horsepower models, 200, 250 and even 300 horsepower (and beyond) is increasingly common, as are multiple-engine configurations. Even pontoon configurations themselves have changed. In addition to traditional twin pontoon designs, triple pontoon configurations handle today’s more powerful four-stroke outboards and increasing passenger loads. Performance-oriented handling packages also allow boats to rapidly get onto plane and carve G-forceinducing corners that rival any fiberglass powerboat. In short, they’re pretty darn fun, and that’s before we even consider the amenities found topside. Modern pontoon boat furniture rivals many living rooms, with buttery soft, leatherlike vinyls, pillow top furniture accents and multiple, oh-so-comfortable recliner variations, from individual

Cast a line from the comfort of a designated fishing seat and wait for a nibble. Hang out coving or at anchor while enjoying open stern layouts that promise easy and welcome access to the water. And then there are the many innovative and unique floor plans available at nearly every level of trim, allowing buyers to choose the perfect layout to match their own unique boating lifestyle. Go with traditional wraparound couches to maximize passenger room, or instead find separate zones that emphasize passenger interaction at one end and relaxing isolation at the other. There are even models with onboard bars should your guests want to make like Cheers and belly up. As to that leisurely sunset cruise, don’t worry, it’s still very much on the pontoon’s agenda. It’s a design that won a National Marine Manufacturer’s Association (NMMA) Innovation Award upon the boat’s debut, and one that continues to stay on the cutting edge. Crest’s Savannah series likewise brings in fiberglass, mixing it with traditional fencing in select locations to create a familiar, yet thoroughly modern take on the genre. And then there’s Bennington’s almost cruiser-like QX Series, highlighted by similar use of fiberglass to form a sleek exterior and offering the style and practical benefits of a full wraparound, walk-through windshield. In every model category, expect abilities that your grandparent’s never dreamed of from their pontoons. Today’s amenities and power choices allow a pontoon boat to truly serve

SALTY DOG IT'S HARD TO TELL WHO'S HAPPIER WITH THE 19-FOOT SCOUT ROBERT VAN DER BORG BOUGHT TO FISH OFFSHORE — HIM OR HIS DOG PETE. WRITTEN BY REAGAN HAYNES

R
obert Van Der Borg bought his 2018 Scout 195 Sport Fish because it can go anywhere a 40-foot boat can go, and for him,
that means one thing — more fish. The Miami Beach resident has been angling since he was a kid, and had been doing it from crowded beaches until September when he took delivery of his new Scout. “Once lobster season started, shore fishing became difficult because there were a lot of people lobstering on the shores,” says Van Der Borg. “That’s what finally pushed me to say, ‘I need a boat.’ It’s nice, it’s quiet, it’s relaxing. If you’ve got to park here on Miami Beach, if you’re trying to fish, you’ve got a million people around you.” The added benefit is that his dog Pete loves riding offshore with him — often putting his front paws on the bow railing and facing directly into the wind under full throttle — while they fish blue water for tuna, snapper, and anything else Van Der Borg can find. “I troll offshore for sailfish and wahoo,” says Van Der Borg. “I can do anything on that boat that anyone on a 30- to 40-foot boat can do.” His friends are impressed when they hit a big wave because they assumed that on a 19-footer, they’d get drenched. “The bow of the boat has a shape, you rarely get wet in it,” says Van Der Borg.
That’s what finally pushed me to say, ‘I need a boat.’ It’s nice, it’s quiet, it’s relaxing. If you’ve got to park here on Miami Beach, if you’re trying to fish, you’ve got a million people around you.
As sales manager and buyer for Universal Greens & Flowers, a flower importer that distributes them around the United States, his days start early and end early enough for him to take the boat out after work. When trying to figure out the kind of boat he wanted, Van Der Borg went to boat shows and did his research before settling on Scout Boats. “Scout was a very well put-together boat,” says Van Der Borg. “The finish was nice, it’s a very beautiful boat. Everything is finished, even the underside of the compartments. It’s more of a classic looking center console.” After deciding on the brand, he reached out to Rahim Nahim at MarineMax Miami. “The first boat we had as a kid was a Sea Ray, and Dad actually bought it at MarineMax up in Connecticut — so that’s marinemax.com

So he’s been lucky, and the boat’s been lucky.” In an area filled with boutique marinas charging a premium catering to yachts, it was a challenge to find dry storage space somewhere affordable. “I got him a spot at North Beach Marina next door, because that’s another hard part in this area — getting real estate to put a boat in,” says Nahim. “Because we’re MarineMax, they will help us and make space for us where they can. Customers can’t buy a boat if they’ve got nowhere to put it. They could wait a year. The marina next door is priced well, so he uses the boat a lot; they splash the boat for him whenever he wants.”

Even shaving off a couple mph can make a significant difference when it comes to how hard you hit the water! The key is to create a solid foundation and avoid skipping the basics. In a general sense, ride with control and precision rather than ‘hucking and hoping’. Not only will you end up accelerating your learning curve, but you’ll advance your skills in a much safer manner.” Murray agrees: “Too often people think that wakeboarding has to be high risk to be high reward, but I challenge this and show people how learning the foundational steps in wakeboarding are not only a great way to progress but also a lot of fun without getting ‘broke off.’” Above all, athletes remind riders to never forget to simply enjoy the ride. Murray has a YouTube channel where he offers informative how-tos, but also undertakes humorous challenges, including trying to ski on random objects like guitars and ladders. LIEUTENANT COMMANDER APPROVED THE GALEON 430 HTC PROVES TO BE ENOUGH BOAT FOR U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY ALUMS WITH SERIOUS CRUSING CREDENTIALS. WRITTEN BY SUE RODMAN

ric and Sabrina Zerphy are not your average boaters. The Maryland-based couple are both graduates of the U.S. Naval
Academy (as is their daughter and her husband), and as such are more than familiar with the ways a boat should work. They landed on the right boat as Galeon’s founder was a Navy Captain in Poland and his insistence on capable, well-built, and sea worthy vessels has not gone unnoticed by these Naval Officers. This is the sixth vessel the couple has owned, and by their own account, the Galeon 430 HTC is the best one yet. The Zerphys have worked their way up from a 20-footer, and have now found a boat that suits their nautical needs almost ideally. Galeon is a Polish builder that has had a relatively low

or decades, Ocean Alexander has focused on producing expertly designed, luxury motoryachts and megayachts.
Year after year the product has spoken for itself and Ocean Alexander has become known as a trusted brand that leads in innovation and quality. Now, Ocean Alexander has used that momentum to break into the midsize market with a center-console. And thus, the 45 Divergence was born. Its name is appropriately given as this vessel is truly a divergence from what the company has done in previous years. With large yacht owners typically having at least a second or third boat, the 45 Divergence is the perfect day yacht and offers greater accessibility to boating locations without sacrificing the comforts of an Ocean Alexander yacht. The 45 Divergence flawlessly merges style, elegance and sport performance together and is fit with ingenious features that has set this boat apart from anything in its class. Evan K. job of setting up events and rendezvous. We feel like any boat we get from here on out is going to be an Azimut. It’s brand loyalty.” And the couple feels similarly about MarineMax, which they use for maintenance. “They’re very punctual, and they’re good about getting things done really quickly. They do an all-around very good job.” Selitto expands upon Chang’s observation. “MarineMax, by having the amount of coverage we have, we are different. It doesn’t matter where you go boating, we have locations everywhere,” he says. “So there’s always a MarineMax store close by for service, or acting as a liaison and/or concierge service. Myself, as a Sales Consultant, am always a phone call away. If on the off chance that Bernie can’t reach anyone through a MarineMax store, he can reach out to me and the right person will be back in touch with him right away. That’s a strong differentiator from the competition.” MarineMax also offers plenty of events and opportunities to get people off the docks and out on the water. Of these Selitto quips, “Simply put, we get people using their boats!” As for the Changs, their fascination with the boating lifestyle and onboard entertaining seems nearly endless. After such a big size jump though, will they keep on moving up? “That’s very possible,” says Dr. Chang. “In fact, I’m sure we will. We’ve got our eye on that new S6 they just built. She’s actually a little bit smaller than what we have now, because there’s no flybridge, but we hear she is super sporty and fast and fun to drive. And that sounds pretty good to us.”

It’s all about learning what you can do, and learning it in your own way. In July 2008, Stilwell (35) survived a near-fatal car accident that cost him both legs but afforded him the chance to meet Regas Woods (38), a Team USA Track and Field Paralympic athlete and double above-the-knee amputee who fabricated Stilwell’s first set of prosthetic legs. While Stilwell’s path wasn’t mentally or physically easy, Woods helped him see that post-amputation life is an exciting and rewarding journey, so long as he committed to going under, over, around or through every mental and physical barrier separating him from his dreams. Stilwell, in turn, eventually asked Woods to help him help others. The result was the NSN Foundation, which they formed in Ocala, Florida in 2009 with the goal of instilling limb-different children and young adults with positive attitudes and active lifestyles. Critically, the NSN Foundation also sought to help kids and young people press the limits of high-level adaptive sports by providing high-performance hardware that might otherwise be unobtainable. In a serendipitous twist, Brad Kendell (38), a lifelong fisherman, sailor, commercial-construction professional and double above-the-knee amputee hailing from Clearwater, Florida, also wanted to give back. Like Stillwell, Kendell’s life-altering experience in a 2003 plane crash demonstrated exactly how exhausting a recovery can be, and, in 2011—between campaigns to represent the USA in sailing at the
