AT THE HELM Welcome Here’s to a new year of adventures on the water in 2022—Happy Boating Days! With warmer weather ahead and the many technological advancements that have already penetrated the boating world and beyond, this year is already looking bright on and off the water. DANCER A competition clogger escapes to the seas. By Sue Rodman

W

hile other people her age are contemplating a first home, Erika Albritton was more interested in her first boat. And just like picking the finishings on a new home, the 21-yearold was able to easily custom build her Sea Ray SPX 190 Outboard to her specifications on the Sea Ray website. “People ask me why not a house,” said Albritton. “But I already have a place to live, and a day on the boat is like a vacation in an afternoon. When you go

10

MarineMax Lifestyles

out on the boat, you are in another world, even if it’s only for the day.” The boat she designed is a sleek craft with a blue and grey hull. The interior, seats, and Infinity snap-in sea deck are shades of white, grey, and black. The helm bucket seats rotate and drop down for comfort—an especially nice feature so others can easily adjust to driving the boat when she wants to tube. Bow seating has a comfortable oval shape with space for three grown adults. Albritton chose bench seating for the port side figuring it would be more

comfortable for her passengers. Her father suggested the name, Water Dancer. For now, her passengers are limited to family members, parents Mike and Kathy, and her brother Dustin. Albritton wants to get comfortable with the boat before taking friends out. First on the list are her teammates on the National Champion Buckshot Cloggers competition dance team. Albritton has been a dancer for more than ten years and regularly travels to events. Having the boat allows her to get away without having to spend hours traveling. “The team has already started planning our boat outing,” laughs Albritton. To get comfortable, the young captain and her mother took a “Women on Water®” class, one of the many free classes offered to MarineMax boat owners. She found the instruction both informative and fun. “Captain Keith was really patient,” she said. “He taught us how to tie knots and answered all our questions. He even clarified things I learned in my boating safety course like the fact that we can have inflatable life jackets, but they aren’t counted as safety gear.”

With her travel for dance, her job as an X-ray technologist, and less-thanideal weather, Albritton hasn’t taken the boat out as much as she’d like yet. The inaugural voyage of the Water Dancer was over Thanksgiving break, a full month after delivery. She took her family out on the Alafia River into Tampa Bay for a twoplus-hour cruise. Albritton summed up her first outing, “It was a lot of fun. There is so much to learn and get used to. It reminds me of dancing. At one point you are enjoying the boat ride and if you aren’t paying attention and hit a wave, it knocks the boat around a little bit. In competition, when you’re focused on the dance and you miss a step, it throws you off balance

11

as well. In both situations, you have to recover quickly to keep it going.” Albritton has more plans for future outings. She ordered Sea Ray’s Elite Package for the watersports tower and upgraded Fusion stereo system, as well as a chart plotter and electronic touchscreen dashboard with depth finder. Her dad felt the touchscreen dashboard would be necessary since she isn’t familiar with the waterways yet. Albritton is excited about the watersports tower. She enjoys tubing and can’t wait to get out for a day with friends. The Sea Ray 190 SPX-OB is built for exactly what Albritton wants to do. She upgraded the standard Mercury outboard engine from 115 horsepower to the optional 150 horsepower, perfect for water sports. A large Sea Deck swim platform makes it easy to strap on skis or jump onto a tube, and ample storage means you can get the gear out of the way when cruising. The portside four-rung stepladder with grab handle makes it easy to get out of the water and back into the

12

MarineMax Lifestyles

boat after a swim. A standard igloo cooler means cold beverages are just an arm’s length away. Albritton has a wish list of items for the boat, but she’s also creating gifts of her own. “I’m a crafter,” she said. “I’m going to make personalized cups for my family, and I already have a shirt that says ‘Life is Better on the Boat.’” Indeed it is.

MarineMax Lifestyles

YOU’VE GOT

THE LOOK The AV36 from Aviara offers style and performance that’s not often seen on the waters of Lake Minnetonka. By Kevin Koenig

F

The Aviara AV36 was built for entertaining. But for Dave Goulet, who keeps his AV36 on Minnesota’s Lake Minnetonka, perhaps the most entertaining moment his boat has offered him had nothing to do with her numerous features. Instead, it was a conversation overheard at the docks. “These two guys were on the docks looking at her,” he says with a laugh, “and I hear one of them say, ‘Oh this is the new boat built by Mastercraft’ and his buddy goes, ‘No way, this thing here was definitely built in Italy.’ And I just had a nice little laugh to myself. This boat does seem to have that effect on people.” The Aviara is, of course, built in America. But her styling is decidedly European, and it’s one of the things that makes her jump out at people right away. Initially, it was Goulet’s wife who was first enamored with the boat’s looks. “We had

gone to the MarineMax up here by us to have a look at a Sea Ray, and my wife saw the Aviara under a tarp and it caught her eye. Mike Anderson, our salesman, took the tarp off for us and my wife fell in love with the boat right there,” says Goulet. “And that was mostly because of the European styling. It’s got such a different look for up here, you don’t see many boats like this one. People literally stare at us. You feel like you have a pink elephant in the back of the boat sometimes!” Which is a colorful way to say that the Aviara AV36 stands out from the crowd, to say the least. With her nearvertical bow, stylish hardtop, and minimalistic windshield, she looks as though she should be ferrying well-heeled guests ashore from some mega yacht in Monte Carlo. An ergonomic layout—featuring a galley, wet bar, and small cabin heightens this boat’s gravitas as a cruiser.

MarineMax.com

15

CoolFeel upholstery is another popular feature that at once keeps the boat comfortable and stylish. “My boat’s got a super dark interior,” Goulet says, “and at first I thought that might be bad in the summer heat, but it’s incredible, the surfaces never get hot.” All these features worked in concert to represent a big step up for Goulet’s boating experience. “I grew up barefoot skiing on the lake with smaller boats, and spent some time on houseboats when I was younger,” he says, “and then I owned my own ski boats, (Malibus) but they were nothing like the Aviara, really.” Goulet loves the boat’s Garmin electronics and its advanced diagnostics, as well as her joystick docking feature, which has been a boon for him during crunch time. “I had an incident where I was pulling out this summer on a crowded dock,” he says, “and it was very windy and a guy was pulling out at the same time, and he was all over the place. He didn’t have any side control or anything like that, and man, it was bad for him. And then it was my turn. Go time, y’know? And I pulled my boat out with 200 people watching. And with my joystick I had full control over the boat and got out smoothly. I think I disappointed the crowd!” Goulet is extremely happy with the way that MarineMax has helped him along on his boating journey. “This past year MarineMax has been busy obviously, with the way the boat sales have been skyrocketing, those guys must have been

working a mile a minute. But they’ve always made time for me,” he says. “All new boats have issues, that is a given, and MarineMax has gotten everything fixed, no questions asked. Which to me is more important than the issue itself. Most people with boats get irritated when something goes wrong, but these boats are getting very sophisticated, so of course there will be some issues, that’s the nature of the beast. But you shouldn’t have to fight to get something fixed. And MarineMax doesn’t give me any grief, and trust me, I’ve been picky—some little fit and finish things, and an ill-fitting gasket or two, but MarineMax always got it right, and right away too.”

Goulet also likes the Aviara’s speed. With the hammer down, she can approach 56 mph, though he doesn’t like to take her above 50, because of the traffic on the lake. However, lake traffic soon won’t be a problem. He needs a new boat for his new home down in Florida. “The Aviara’s been a good segue between those old Malibus, and an ocean boat,” he says. “I’ve got my eye on a big Boston Whaler—that’s another MarineMax boat, of course.” And as any businessman worth his salt will tell you, there’s no higher compliment than a repeat customer.

KNIFE OF BOATS For a captain with multiple interests, the Boston Whaler 320 Vantage is the perfect craft. By Sue Rodman

w

hen Daniel Petersen, a pilot with American Airlines, f lies over the turquoise blue-green surf of the Caribbean, he longs to be out on the water. It was that desire and impending retirement that pushed him and his wife Josette to move from Nebraska to Naples, Florida, and purchase a boat. “As an airline pilot, safety is always the first priority,” said Petersen. “In researching boats, one brand suggested in a specific situation, the first thing

18

MarineMax Lifestyles

to do was hand out life vests. I cut that one from the list pretty quickly.” In the end, with the guidance of MarineMax sales consultant, Diamond Neeley, Petersen purchased a Boston Whaler 320 Vantage, christened, Latitude Adjustment. “The Boston Whaler was far superior to the other boats I considered. There is no way you’d leave that boat unless it was on fire,” Petersen mused. “Plus, the insurance on the Whaler was much less for the same value.”

Safety is important, but it wasn’t the only reason Petersen chose the Boston Whaler. From the first sea trial with Neeley, he was impressed with the ride of the Whaler, the human ergonomics of the boat, and the systems integration. The Whaler has twin Mercury Verado® 300 V8 engines that power Petersen’s favorite feature—joystick piloting. The engines and joystick combination offer incredible power and precision, giving the captain complete

control of the boat, including sideways maneuvering—a feature that makes docking super simple. As a pilot, navigational equipment intrigues him. The Latitude Adjustment has two 12-inch Raymarine Axiom displays along with Mercury’s integrated SmartCraft VesselView®. Petersen wouldn’t do without the addition of the Quantum Two Doppler radar and the Sirius XM Weather. The radar allows him to avoid the shrimp boats and other marine traffic on the ocean, and both features give him peace of mind out on the water. According to Petersen, the Skyhook and autopilot are two must-have features as well. The Skyhook GPS position lock is great when waiting for a fuel dock, or positioning to enjoy the sunset on the bow. The autopilot cuts down on fatigue

during long trips with the ability to set an entire route, as well as the flexibility to make modifications. Recently, the couple took an overnight trip from Naples to the Dry Tortugas with their son Joshua. There is a spacious wellequipped cabin on the port side, making it comfortable for overnight accommodations. The comfort extends to the enclosed head area with natural light and a pull-out faucet that can double as a rain shower. The family toured Fort Jefferson, took out paddleboards to explore the shallow waters, and spent time fishing. Back on the boat, they are able to get out of the Florida sun under the Whaler’s spacious hardtop, that can extend to shade convertible bench seating which accommodates 3-4 adults comfortably with opposing seats perfect for conversation. A stowable table is perfect for late afternoon hors d’oeuvres.

The Latitude Adjustment has definitely been an incentive for the kids to visit. “My four-year-old grandson, Benjamin, is chomping at the bit to get out on the boat. He’s been drawing pictures and sending them to us,” laughed Petersen. “And we can’t wait to have our other three children Wyatt, Reagan, and Jordan out too.” Petersen and his wife also enjoy taking the boat for day trips. They like getting away from the crowds, watching the birds, or seeing an occasional sea turtle in the water. Josette enjoys shelling on the beaches, and is the first one to say “slow down” so they can wet a line to catch some snook or tarpon on the way back to the dock. The dive door on the Boston Whaler makes it easy to step on and off the boat and includes a handle so there is

MarineMax.com

19

something to grab onto. It’s also an easy way to bring a big catch into the two fish boxes located under the deck. Although Petersen had experience boating on freshwater lakes with single-engine boats, the saltwater experience with twin engines was new. That’s where MarineMax training came in. “I believe in training,” said Petersen. “Captains John Dean and Bob Sorenson went through all the systems stem to stern and worked with me to practice docking, anchoring, and beaching. The experience was absolutely invaluable. My wife is signed up to take the Women on Water® class too.” The Petersen’s have just begun their boating adventure. They have yet to host friends, waiting until they are comfortable with it inside and out. And they are excited to see MarineMax Getaways!® resume. The couple plans to join the annual Bimini trip, and can’t wait to meet other Whaler captains through those events. “The Boston Whaler is a perfect fit for our boating lifestyle,” concluded Petersen. We like to cruise; fish; entertain friends and family; go on overnight excursions. It’s a Swiss Army Knife of boats.”

Fishing | Aquila Power Catamarans

Aquila’s all-new Offshore Line of 28 Molokai catamarans is built ready to run and fish even when the going gets rough. By Alan Jones

Less than a month after Aquila added the 54 Yacht and 70 Luxury models to the upper end of its all-catamaran lineup, two more additions expanded the f leet on the other end with the creation of its new Offshore Line, that will inspire confidence with their tremendous seakeeping ability. Designed to appeal to anglers and sporty families, the 28 Molokai and 28 Molokai Cuddy are serious fishing boats that can easily shift to pleasure cruising and entertaining. The original boat design was developed by Kirk Clark from Molokai, Hawaii, who has built catamarans for

22

MarineMax Lifestyles

40 years that can handle challenging sea conditions. The Aquila design team, working with Clark, reformatted his design to ref lect modern styling and advanced construction techniques, like the vinyl ester resin Vacuum Infusion Process used by the Sino Eagle Group that builds Aquilas exclusively for MarineMax. What makes the hull design of the 28 Molokai models unique, is their wide 9-foot, 8.5-inch beam that creates a stable platform, whether running or at rest. Power choices include twin 150 or 200-horsepower Mercury FourStroke outboards that are set far apart, which

helps its slow-speed maneuverability. Its twin 28-foot long catamaran hulls have ultra-sharp entries for slicing into head seas and transition to f latter planing surfaces farther aft for higher speeds and greater efficiency, allowing it to get 2.3 mpg with Mercury 200s at a cruising speed of 22 mph. At 35 mph, the 28 Molokai still gets about 2 mpg, and twin 75-gallon fuel tanks give it plenty of range. Its top speed with a pair of Mercury V6 200hp FourStroke outboards is about 46 mph. When driving monohull boats in rough conditions, frequent throttle adjustments are often needed to avoid

MarineMax.com

23

slamming into waves, but Aquila’s Molokai catamarans do better when running at a constant speed. And here’s the kicker: the ride is softer when you go faster because of the cushioning effect of air compressing between the hulls and water’s surface. The 28 Molokai series has a taller and wider than normal tunnel with about a foot of space between the middle of the hull and the water, which enhances the cushioning effect and reduces the noise of water slapping the top of the tunnel. The center console design of the 28 Molokai is ideal for anglers who like to fish 360 degrees around the boat. Owners that choose the Pro Comfort option can up their entertainment potential with a giant U-lounge in the bow, with cushions that are removable when in fishing mode. An optional, removable table for the bow section is ideal for food presentation. The Pro Comfort option also adds f lip-up stern jump seats for added comfort when running or trolling. The center console opens from the front to give unimpeded access to the storage within, with ample room to add a portable head.

Aquila 28 Molokai

24

MarineMax Lifestyles

The 28 Molokai is ready for fishing action with six rod holders in the transom and four set into the gunwales. The hardtop adds seven more rod holders and gives the driver and copilot extra protection with a fixed windshield that even has a windshield wiper for clearing salt spray. A 30-gallon standard livewell sits behind the twin custom helm seats, and there’s plenty of tackle storage in the rigging station which includes a cutting board and freshwater sink below, that’s fed by a 16-gallon tank that also supplies the transom shower. The 28 Molokai Cuddy is ideal for those who need extra protection from the elements with its standard hardtop and glass enclosure on three sides. Within the enclosed Cuddy, which kids will likely claim as their domain, is a single bunk for sitting or catching a quick nap, and there’s a place for a portable head underneath a hinged f loor hatch. The wide-open standard

deck layout creates unparalleled room for fishing, but more leisurely-inclined owners can choose a doublewide cockpit lounger with a reversible backrest. Flip-up stern jumpseats can also be added along with a host of true water sports activities options including roof racks for surfboard/SUP/ kayak storage, inf latable tow-behind sled, as well as a host of options for serious fishing or diving enthusiasts. The 28 Molokai Cuddy is designed as an à la carte option boat so that each owner can order the boat according to their specific setup requirements, making the 28 Molokai Cuddy one of the most versatile boats in her size range. Both models have twin fish boxes with a total of 188 gallons of capacity and twin in-deck storage compartments that hold 104 gallons each. The huge, f lat foredeck makes a great place to toss a cast net. And unlike most outboard-powered boats, there is room in between the wide-set engines for a usable swim ladder, and Aquila makes access from the cockpit easy thanks to the removable transom door, which can be stored when not in use. Swimming pool-style grab handles make it easy to reboard after a dive or swim. The addition of these two new models to the Aquila lineup will create new catamaran fans, thanks to their roomy layouts and incredible seakeeping ability.

Q&A WITH CAPTAIN SANDY YAWN INTERVIEW BY LISA HARRISON, CO-HOST OF MARINEMAX’S FROM THE HELM BOATING BROADCAST.

By Aliya Escoda

MarineMax Lifestyles Lifestyles 26 26MarineMax

I

n celebration of the 45th anniversary of Sea Ray’s Sundancer Series, MarineMax hosted an exclusive Inspired Design Experience featuring Captain Sandy Yawn, a world-renowned captain in the yachting industry and star of Bravo’s hit television series, Below Deck Mediterranean. We had the chance to sit down with Captain Sandy to hear more about her history in the marine industry and her thoughts on the day’s events, including a hands-on Women on Water® class and demo the all-new Sundancer 370 Outboard. Lisa: How did you get into the boating

industry? Captain Sandy: I am from Bradenton,

Florida and I grew up on the water.

We always water-skied from the time I was little. And as I got older, I started going down the wrong path. I then decided to answer an ad in the paper for detailing boats. I started doing so well at detailing boats that one of the customers offered to hire me full time. He was the one who helped start me on my career path. Lisa: From detailing boats what was

your next step in your career? Captain Sandy: The next step was working for him full-time. He taught me how to dock, he sent me to sea school, engineering school and invested in my career. I believe in loyalty, and he was so loyal to me and invested in me that I chose to stay loyal to him and I worked for his family for MarineMax.com 27 27

nine years. Lisa: How did you make that jump in your career to superyachts? Captain Sandy: I always say to the crew it’s great to work on a superyacht, but you learn boat handling best on smaller vessels. I started on a 67 and then we built a 92 that was later sold. I then worked for a billionaire who went from a 92 to a 157, so that was a big jump for me. I got to watch what it was like to build boats in a shipyard because I went through the build of the 92 at Hatteras Yachts, and then we built the Trinity 157, which was a custom build where I was the build captain. This helped me to feel confident and comfortable with the vessel since I was able to see the whole build process from concept to completion.

Lisa: What advice would you give to the

average person docking a 37-foot boat or working with their family? Captain Sandy: Even as a captain today I stop, and I take a breath. I make sure to think about my approach and my escape. If my approach isn’t going to work, where’s my escape? You need to always have that plan in place. There are some places that you go into where there is no escape. So, then it is all about getting past that fear of what if—just stay with what is. I stay committed and I stayed focused on my approach. I don’t freak out and I think it through. That is the message. Plan your approach, plan your escape. But if there’s no escape, remember to stay committed to your approach.

Lisa: You attended our Women on Water®

class today. What is some of your feedback on the class? Captain Sandy: I think it was incredible, Captain Keith did an excellent job. He’s very thorough and puts safety first which is important, but he also makes sure to help the women build their confidence on boats well enough to where they feel that they can take the helm over themselves. I feel blessed to be a part of this because I started on small boats. The other thing I love about MarineMax is their experience with the customer doesn’t end as soon as you purchase your boat—they continue supporting you the whole time you’re on the water.

DANCING

TO A DIFFERENT ‘TOON A close-knit family finds a pontoon to be the ultimate dance partner. By Jeff Hemmel

here are many reasons that drew Maddie and Bob Sipp to their current 2021 Harris Sunliner 230. The fact that the twin-pontoon Sunliner performed so well on their local Lake Norman waters they completely forget they went shopping for a triple ‘toon. The acceptance that Maddie, 68, and Bob, 71, were getting older and found their current bowrider harder to get in and out of at the dock. The fact that their very first boat had been a pontoon, and truth be told, they missed it. Spend just a few minutes in conversation with the couple, however, and one reason above all shuff les its way to the forefront—the dance parties. The Sunliner offers an abundance of dance-f loor-ready real estate, perfect for when the couple’s five grandchildren want to crank up the music and boogie. “It’s my favorite thing,” laughs Maddie, a woman who during disco’s

peak years found herself doing the hustle in a photo that made the front page of The Wall Street Journal. “Just to be out on the water and see the little ones dance. I inherited that from my family, so I’m just so happy to be passing it on.

Our grandkids just really think that that’s fun.” Boat dancing, or just boating in general, wasn’t something on the couple’s radar for most of their lives. Neither was leaving Pittsburgh for Lake Norman. Life, however, has a funny way of changing the tune.

31

The couple’s son, Nathan, was first to move to the area. After he was diagnosed with lymphoma, his daughter Abbey relocated to help his family. Needless to say, Maddie and Bob soon followed. At first, it was Nathan’s boat that got the Sipp clan out on the water. The beauty of the lake (and an empty dock beckoning outside their home), however, soon convinced Mom and Dad to purchase their first boat as well—a pre-owned 2006 Harris Sunliner, and the couple enjoyed it for eight years before purchasing Nathan’s Sea Ray. Deep down, however, Maddie and Bob knew they were pontoon people. And yes, dancers. Enter that 2021 Harris Sunliner 230. The couple had stopped into MarineMax Lake Norman, convinced they needed a tri-toon in order to have the performance, handling, and stability they deemed necessary. COVID-19 depleted inventories, however, had triples in short supply. That’s when sales associate, Jim Pinkham, realized the best fit might actually be a twin-tube boat. “They were very much convinced they needed a tri-toon,” recalls Pinkham, “and I said, let’s just put this boat in the water and make your determination after you ride the boat. Not a lot of brands out there perform like a modern Harris. It probably wasn’t 10 minutes into the ride

32

before Bob looked at Maddie grinning ear to ear. They loved it. The boat sold itself.” As the couple tell the story, the 2021 Harris was a notable upgrade from their first Harris, with larger diameter pontoons that handled rough water far better, confident handling, and exceptional stability. “A magnificent change from our original Harris to this

one was the way it handled,” explains Bob. “The pontoons are larger in diameter and the performance strakes keep it so stable in the water. It was like having a tri-toon. We looked at each other after the test drive and said ‘we’re getting this boat!” As Pinkham recalls, inventory may have limited both he and the Sipps to

what was available, but it was the time spent understanding how the couple planned to use the boat that convinced him the twin-tube Sunliner was the perfect fit. “I’m not the kind of person who’s going to sell something just to sell something, because an unhappy customer is going to come back and derail many years of sales ethics. Horsepower overcame the fact that it didn’t have a center tube, and for what they were going to use it for, the larger diameter pontoons allowed the boat to sit up higher in the water.” Today, all three generations of the family continue to enjoy Lake Norman. Nathan won his battle with cancer and his wife Jennifer and sons, Asher, Kieran, and Wesley continue to enjoy their lakefront home. Abbey stayed in the area and, along with husband Robert, added granddaughters, Lina and Maren. “We’re a really close-knit family for some good reasons and for some not-sogood reasons,” says Maddie, “but we all really love being together. And the lake, you cannot beat it. We like to ride along the shoreline and look at the beautiful homes, anchor and swim, or eat lunch, or go to a restaurant.” “And the grandchildren like to dance and carry on, too, so we do a lot of that. The boat is definitely a drawing point for all of us to get together.”

CREATING THE

PERFECT ENDLESS WAVE Whatever your budget, MarineMax has your ultimate wave-making machine. By Alan Jones

I

n the early days of wakesurfing, those looking to build the biggest wave possible had to rely on the brute force of ballast alone. Today’s wakesurf boats use advanced technology to create the perfect wave in a variety of ways. MarineMax has chosen only the best watersports boat brands to sell at its authorized retail locations and buyers can choose from its national inventory of boats, not just the ones a local dealer has.

NAUTIQUE New for 2022, the Super Air Nautique S21 and S23 use the Nautique Surf System (NSS) with Waveplate technology to carve one of the best waves in the industry. Unlike most wakesurf plates that move up and down, Nautique’s unique system use plates that extend out to the side and down to interrupt the flow of the water to help create a wide range of wakes from long and mellow to steep and tall, and everything in between. The surfer has several ways to control the action. With Surf Control, a rider can switch sides with the press of a wristband button. Surfers can even connect using select Garmin wearables to allow them to control the boat’s speed, ballast, wave shape and even music volume without having to resort to a game of charades with the driver to signal their preferences.

ATX SURF BOATS Created in 2019 by Tigé Boats, this standalone brand is built in the same factory as its ultra-premium sibling, but features a surf-centric focus for its three-model lineup that is priced to make wakesurfing a sport everyone can enjoy. ATX models, like the new 20 Type-S, have access to many of the wave-building and control technologies pioneered by Tigé, such as Taps T3 and ConvexV hull design, and has 2,750 pounds of stock ballast. The ATXperience Control System is a 7-inch screen that helps create the perfect wave, even for drivers new to wakesports. The ATX Shock Tower Side Tow Point is perfect to help beginners get up in the pocket instead of having to maneuver there.

ATX 20 Type-S

TIGÉ BOATS

Tigé Z1

Tigé boats start building a wave with its ConvexV hull design that curves up toward the stern to allow its boats to settle deeper in the water to organically create a larger wave at slower speeds. Then, its patented, new-gen Taps 3T system allows drivers to be able to shape and build wakes even further using a three-plate system (think industrial-strength, uniquely-shaped trim tabs). It can even help create a recreational slalom wake.

For 2022, its legendary Z1 model has been reinvented to include Tigé’s new GO System of wake control that makes it easy for drivers of all abilities to dial up the perfect conditions for each rider in whatever watersport they choose. With one tap of the screen, ballast, speed, and Taps T3 settings are automatically locked in. And when wakesurfing, changing wave sides quickly from goofy to regular—on-the-fly—is just one tap away.

SUPRA For 2022, the Supra SL has been redefined to make it bigger, deeper, and heavier with a beefier hull and 4,000 pounds of standard ballast to help create a huge, well-defined surf wave. Interior improvements include flip-up seatbacks that have higher backrests for more comfort. An all-new rear-facing cockpit seat that slides forward, and with one flip, creates a raised table for laying out a breaktime feast. One more flip and it creates a rear-facing observers’ seat. The transom Surf Locker has more usable space for a pair of surfboards or wet life jackets. New power lever-controlled stern thrusters make it easy for drivers of all skill levels to look like a hero at the marina.

MOOMBA As the name implies, the Moomba Max is all about creating the biggest, most surfable wave on the water. Starting with bundled standard features like 4,000 pounds of ballast, SmartPlate, Flow 2.0 wave building and controlling surfaces, it’s ready to rock right without any further additions. Moomba’s AutoWake autopilot system keeps the boat running at the ideal attitude in the water at all times, even if passengers are moving about the cockpit. By using multiple sensors and a computer interface, AutoWake controls parameters like fore and aft tilt that greatly affect the size and character of the wave. It also takes charge of the amount of left or right roll to make sure the wave face is well-defined and not washed out. Depth of hull penetration into the water is also automatically controlled. Upgrading to the optional Flow 3.0 system gives the ability to exact superfine control over the shape of the wave.

Moomba Max

MASTERCRAFT The newest MasterCraft is the user-friendly XT22, a 22-footer with 3,350 pounds of ballast with an all-new layout and more freeboard. It features Mastercraft’s newest innovation called the SurfStar system, which has Rapid Surf, a feature that allows a driver to use a slider to automatically craft the perfect wave and shows the user a visual representation of what it will look like. Custom Surf allows advanced users to tweak all parameters to dial-up a perfect wave and save that setting to use again. SurfStar also uses new tab actuators that were designed for the rigors of aerospace and can withstand 3,000 pounds of force. In addition, magnetic position sensors keep the boat oriented to produce the optimum wave. An all-new trio of towers gives owners a new look that’s more functional than ever.

TAKING IT TO THE

NEXT LEVEL A Colorado couple falls in love with the quality craftsmanship of Galeon Yachts. By Pim Van Hammen

W

hen Bill and Kim Scaff went to the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show it was just for the fun of it. “We went to the show with absolutely zero intention of buying a boat,” Bill says. The Colorado couple owned a Sunseeker 25 pontoon boat that they used on Lake Pueblo, about an hour from their home in the Denver suburbs. “We love the water,” says Bill who works in the oil and gas exploration business. They’d been boating in Colorado for about 20 years. The Scaffs had flown down to Florida to visit friends and visited the show for entertainment’s sake. They visited Azimut because they’d seen the brand in magazines. “It’s a beautiful boat,” Bill says, “but it was a bit too contemporary for our taste.” Then they checked out Galeon Yachts and were blown away. “We were like, ‘this is a yacht,’” says Bill. They loved the interiors and the innovation, but what stood out was the fit and finish. “You could tell the builders knew what they were doing,” Bill says. They asked where the boats were built and were surprised to learn it was Poland. The Galeon emphasis on innovation was not lost on the Scaffs when they

48

MarineMax Lifestyles

toured the Galeons in 2017. They liked the boats so much that they went back to the show for the next two days. Every day they spoke with MarineMax yacht and brokerage sales executive Kyle Pillsbury. The Scaffs told Pillsbury they could not imagine going from a 25-foot pontoon boat to a Galeon 500 or 520. “There’s no way we’re gonna do this,” Bill recalls. “This is crazy.” But Pillsbury told them MarineMax could teach them how to operate the boat from the company’s Fort Myers marine facility. “We’ll walk you through it,” Bill recalls Pillsbury telling him. “We’ll train you, and we’ll help you.” The Scaffs flew home to Colorado but stayed in touch with Pillsbury. Four

months after the show they pulled the trigger on a Galeon 550 Fly. Bill says he never felt pressured, but it was a big step. “I call it more of a leap,” he says. They took delivery of their new boat in Fort Myers where Pillsbury gave them an orientation. Then Pillsbury and two of MarineMax’s captains took turns training the Scaffs as they visited some of the smaller islands. “They took us out and let me captain the boat,” Bills says. “We had to get 60 hours on it, so the insurance company would sign off on it for me to drive it solo.” “The whole time, we’re like, ‘is this for real,’” Bill says. “This is crazy that I’m captaining a 58-foot yacht.”

Being Colorado natives, the Scaffs had a lot to learn about saltwater boating. They knew nothing about tides. “That was totally foreign to us,” Kim says. Navigating was also new. “You gotta go between the green and the red, and they change from right to left. We’re like, what is this about?” Bill says looking back on it. But the Scaffs are adventurers. They own a Pilatus PC-12 NG turboprop airplane, which Bill pilots himself, and MarineMax continued to teach them how to operate the 550. By July of 2019, they left Fort Myers with eight other boats for a 20-day trip to the Exumas. A MarineMax captain joined them for the trip to Nassau to make sure they could handle the boat themselves. After signing off on them, the captain flew back to Florida and the Scaffs spent the next two weeks touring nine different islands with the group. “It was fantastic,” Bill says. “It took me to another level of boating.” They loved the lifestyle. The 550 was great for the two of them, but they wanted to bring their three kids and their five grandkids. They needed more room. “On those smaller islands there’s no place to shop for groceries,” Bill says. “There wasn’t enough refrigeration.” They’d only owned the 550 Fly for a year, but the Scaffs decided they needed a bigger boat. At the 2019 Miami Boat Show they looked at boats from other manufacturers, but they returned to Galeon. They really liked the new 72-foot 680, which they thought was beautiful, but it didn’t have a passthrough to the bow or beach mode. The 68-foot 640 Fly did. The 640 also had lots of refrigeration and a separate washer and dryer, which Kim really liked. With a much larger captain’s quarters, it also gave them more bunks and more heads. Earlier this year, they took delivery of their new 68-footer and are getting recertified to run it. In March they took the 640 to Key West for a MarineMax rendezvous, which gave both Scaffs an opportunity to captain. When severe weather prevented them from returning the boat to Fort Myers, they rented a car and flew back to Colorado. A few days later MarineMax delivered their boat back to Fort Myers. “Where are you gonna get that anywhere else,” Bill says about MarineMax’s service.

Since then, coronavirus has prevented the Scaffs from getting back to their new boat. They can’t wait to bring their kids and grandkids down to Hawk Cay in the Florida Keys where they plan to take them all out on the water, drop the hook and go into beach mode. “That’s what we’re excited about,” Bill says. “Galeon is very affordable for what you get,” he says. “The fit and finish is fantastic and when you compare it to boats in similar size, you’re gonna find you get more with Galeon.”

Worth the Wait Patience pays off for a first-time boat owner who finds exactly what he wants—and needs. By Liz Pasch

T

hree years ago, Alan Carter began to explore buying his very first boat and a close friend gave him some very good advice: just because it looks like the one you want, it may not be the one you need. “I still had two kids living in my home and they still needed parenting, so the timing wasn’t right then,” says the California-based TV director of awards shows, specials, and series including The Voice and Shark Tank. “I had to factor in what worked in my life. I didn’t necessarily think the Aquila was the one to buy right away.” Alan considered the 44 or 48 but it didn’t fit his requirements at the time. Taking

his friend’s advice, neither were any of the other boats he considered. So, he waited. “I was smart enough to not own a boat before,” says Alan and explains that his family life and demanding career were too busy to spend that much time and money to justify owning a boat. His interest in boating, however, led him to charter boats on vacations through The Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands (BVI). “The first time I brought my nieces, my mom, and their friends—six ladies in all. One of the girls grew up on boats so that was very helpful.” Alan had been to the BVI previously but had never chartered. “We were all

experiencing it the first time together and at the end, they all agreed this was a trip of a lifetime. Every time I take someone new, that’s what they say.” Alan loves to share the charter experience with others and his professional experience in the entertainment industry came in handy when he launched his YouTube channel, The Wandering Hillbilly. He intended to primarily focus on videos in the BVI. “There’s nothing like going to a cove, dropping anchor, and you own the island while you’re there. It’s so unique for everyone who goes.” His channel generates 10-15 questions from YouTube viewers who dream of someday experiencing their own BVI charter, which Alan answers personally. “Anegada is magical, an hour away from all the other islands. Then there’s Foxy’s. The only way to get there is on your boat.” The opportunities that

52

a charter offers are unique things that you cannot do from a cruise ship, which, according to Alan, is the most appealing benefit for him. “On one charter there were eight of us and we anchored by Dog Island. It was a surreal moment realizing that we were on our own boat, with each other, surrounded by beauty. That’s the unique part of chartering a boat.” Years of BVI and Bahamas’ charters have provided Alan with significantly more boating experience. He enrolled in a variety of boating courses to enhance his skills and has fostered friendships with many boat owners. He loves the challenge of learning something that’s completely different from his 25+ years in the entertainment industry. “Owning a boat didn’t fit in our lives before but now it does,” says Alan. He had previously considered single-hulled boats, but his charter experience led him to focus on

powercats and reconsider the Aquila brand that had expanded their product line since he first saw it three years prior. He also now had a much clearer idea of not only what he wants, but what he needs. Alan promised his wife their new boat would never feel like camping, so a full-beam master was his top priority. He also wanted comfortable cabins for friends that would be equally conducive to their children’s needs. There was only one model that met all his requirements, the Aquila 54 Yacht. “There was a long list of options to choose from and I basically checked them all. This boat will be totally decked out,” jokes Alan. “It’s the right size and has crew quarters. It checked off everything in my list. By being patient, I found the boat I both want and need, and so it worked to wait.” Alan says he was very fortunate in his career and now wants to slow down.

He looks forward to cruising the Atlantic coast on his very own Aquila 54 Yacht, spending time in Georgia, and exploring the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). “There’s a whole new phase of life coming,” he says and adds that he’ll continue chartering in the BVI. Following his friend’s advice proved to be valuable, and Alan offers his own to those who want to charter, but are nervous about their ability. “Just ask MarineMax to hire a captain. It will relieve your stress of being responsible for the boat. They know where to go, you’ll have a great time and you’ll realize that you can do this, too.”

REALIZED MarineMax did more than connect this couple with their dream boat; they continually help them live out the ocean cruising lifestyle they have always imagined. By Carly Sisson

D

an Starko has been freshwater boating since he was a kid. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, he started riding along with his grandfather in his boat when he was nine years old. A few years later, when he was 14, he was turned loose on the lake in a 20-foot mahogany Chris-Craft, with a 100hp Mercury outboard. Starko drag raced cars for years, and he has an affinity for fast and powerful vehicles after driving over 200 mph more than a few times. When he moved to Nashville and bought a home on the lake, he bought powerboats that offered speed—first a 22-foot Cobalt and then a 35-foot Regal. The lake, however, didn’t keep him entertained for long.

“My desire ever since I was a youngster was to do some ocean cruising, as opposed to just freshwater stuff,” says Starko. After moving to Florida following the sale of his business, Starko finally had the opportunity to live out his ocean cruising dreams. He and his fiancé, Debbie, attended the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show to find the perfect boat to do just that. “For some reason, I had always wanted an Azimut,” says Starko. “I just loved the appearance of them. I loved the Italian interiors.” For all three days of the boat show, however, they walked past the Azimut stand but never stepped foot in one of the boats, wanting to look at everything before making a decision. Finally, with thirty minutes left on the final day of the show

and a contract already written for another boat, the couple boarded the Azimut 54. Thirty minutes later, they owned the boat. They purchased the brand-new stock model from MarineMax, which has an extensive dealer network with a base in Naples, where Starko lived at the time. As he adjusted to the tides, currents, and weather patterns that play a role in ocean cruising, it was helpful to have a support network close to home. The couple now lives in Lighthouse Point on Florida’s east coast, and there is another dealer just down the road in Pompano Beach, so when they were ready to upgrade to a larger model after a year, it was no question that they would again make their purchase through MarineMax.

The Azimut 60, debuted as a new model in 2019 and includes many extra features and improvements that work well for the couple’s three children, including an additional head, a large bow area for entertaining and a huge flybridge, where the couple spends most of their time— Starko estimates that in the 500 combined hours they have put onto the two boats, he has only driven from the ‘downstairs’ helm station for about 10 hours. “There were just a bunch of things they had improved

56

MarineMax Lifestyles

from the 54 to the 60 that made us want to move up,” he says, “so it wasn’t so much the length as it was the new features.” The new 60 was short on availability, but MarineMax was able to set Starko up with a model that had been run for about 20 hours before that owner decided it wasn’t large enough. Debbie then spent hours working with the interior designers at MarineMax to order custom bedding and other upholstery to put the couple’s signature touch on the interior.

“We have not built a boat from scratch because frankly, we don’t want to wait,” Starko says. “And that’s the thing about MarineMax, they have an Azimut of every size in stock, and usually they fully option the boats for U.S. delivery. They do a really good job in selecting the colors, so they are a really attractive pick. I’m not sure we would have made any changes to the boat; it’s what we would have selected anyhow.” Powered by twin 900-hp Volvo Penta straight-shaft diesels, the 60 cruises around 25 knots with a top-end around 29 knots. That’s a little less speed than the former drag racer is used to, but its stability and hull design make up for it. The joystick control works well with the Volvo transmissions and bow and stern thrusters, and the Seakeeper stabilizer makes for a smooth ride while ocean cruising. After purchasing the boat one of the service technicians at MarineMax gave Starko a thorough orientation on the new model. “I’m very mechanically inclined because of my car background, so I wanted to know everything about the engine, where everything was, and how everything worked,” Starko says. “We probably spent four or five hours in the engine room. After your orientation, you can call them any time and ask how to get to a screen, and the manuals that come with the boat are amazing as well.” The couple keeps their boat at home and they prefer to operate it alone without a captain—Debbie serving as the official first mate. They enjoy taking local cruises and trips to The Bahamas with their children, and their most recent voyage was to the Exumas. Wherever they travel, they have peace of mind knowing that they are under the MarineMax service umbrella at all times.

“We’ve been over in Bimini or Atlantis and they’ve flown parts over. They will actually send a technician over if you’re in a place where you can’t get service, especially when you’re under warranty,” Starko says. That sometimes involves putting their technicians on a flight or a boat to transfer them to the islands, but MarineMax has them there within a day or two when help is needed. Starko also has the cellphone numbers for several service members, and they have been happy to answer the phone in the middle of the night when immediate assistance is needed. In addition to their family trips to The Bahamas, they also enjoy participating in voyages organized by MarineMax. “I remember when we bought the boat, they said they’d see us soon,” Debbie says. “I was like, we just bought a new boat, why will they see us soon?” What they didn’t understand until they were actually in the MarineMax family was how much the company keeps its members involved. MarineMax offers exclusive Azimut rendezvous events for Azimut owners. The couple has taken part in these events as

well as other MarineMax trips with multiple types of craft. Members can opt to ride in tandem on the adventures for added support, and MarineMax brings technicians along in case any boats need service along the way. Last year, the Starkos were invited to the Azimut factory with a group of owners for the builder’s 50th anniversary, which consisted of tours, lunches, dinners, and wine tastings. “They really don’t just sell you a boat and send you on your way. They really try to include you in everything,” Debbie says. “By having these trips, you have something to prepare for, something to look forward to.” MarineMax does not just sell and service boats; they help boat owners fully integrate into the boating lifestyle. The trips have allowed the couple to become good friends with fellow boat owners, and they have become close with many MarineMax employees as well. “Boating has become a really big part of our lives,” says Starko, who has given up drag racing in exchange for a safer hobby he can enjoy with his family. “MarineMax is just a great group of people, and I don’t ever feel like I’m alone.” The company has provided

the couple with the boating lifestyle that Starko has imagined since he was just a kid running a wooden Chris-Craft around a lake, turning the ocean cruising dreams of his childhood into a reality that he will enjoy for the rest of his life.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

A couple with decades of cruising in their wake knew the 112 Ocean Alexander was just the yacht for them. By Jeanne Craig

T

he attraction was instantaneous. When Pierre and Gigi Titley boarded the Ocean Alexander 112 at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in the fall of 2018, they knew the trideck yacht was the one for them. The only problem was that the boat had been claimed by someone else. “We went to that show to buy our next boat, yet when we found the perfect one, we learned it had already been sold,” says Pierre. That was a minor obstacle. Pierre, the co-founder and president of the regional real estate franchise RE/MAX Quebec, and Gigi, a veteran real estate attorney, typically know how to get what they want. The couple, who have been

58

MarineMax Lifestyles

married for 36 years, asked about the possibility of having another boat just like it built for them. Jeff Oliver, a yacht broker with MarineMax of Pompano Beach, Florida, was working with the couple that day. “I’ve known the Titleys for almost 20 years. Pierre likes to joke around, so I didn’t think he was serious when he suggested we sit down and put a contract together that afternoon,” says Oliver. But serious he was. At the time, the Titleys had just sold an 85-foot Pacific Mariner and were ready to trade in their 68-foot Sea Ray. They wanted to trade up to the 112, which is the entry-level model in Ocean Alexander’s line of superyachts that stretches to 155 feet. She was

created by London-based megayacht designer, Evan K. Marshall, who brought large-yacht thinking to bear, giving the 112 five staterooms to accommodate a party of 10, crew quarters for up to six, and plenty of fine details. The boat made its world debut in 2014. Pierre has been boating since he was a young boy. His parents owned a cottage near the Ottawa River in Canada. There he ran everything from a small boat with a 5-hp Johnson outboard to a Dowty jetboat. Decades later, when he met Gigi, he had

acquired a classic 1963 Shepherd 38 made of mahogany and teak, which the couple restored together. The couple still owns that boat and a few others that they keep at their home in Canada. The Titleys bought the Ocean Alexander 112, Gigi IV, with the intention of keeping it at Bahia Mar in Fort Lauderdale, near their oceanfront condo. It’s the largest boat they’ve ever owned, and the first to be operated and maintained by a full crew. “We don’t have to work a lot on this boat, but it is working for us,” says Pierre. At 75, Pierre is semi-retired from the

company he co-founded in 1982. “I’ve worked very hard to pay for my boats,” he says. And he and Gigi plan to enjoy them, particularly the newest member of their fleet. “This boat will help us live life to the fullest,” says Gigi, who fully embraced the philosophy not to take any day for granted after she lost her younger brother to cancer. Her brother was her associate in their law firm and he died at the too-young age of 36. Once the contract was inked on the 112, Gigi took the lead on the building process, working closely with broker Mike

59

Tyrell at MarineMax and designers in Evan Marshall’s office to customize the interior to her liking. The process of creating an elegant, seamless design was familiar to her; Gigi was hands-on in the creation of their home on a lake in a suburb of Montreal. She managed every aspect of the house’s construction, which took more than six years to build. Her husband calls it “magnificent.” Gigi says, “We love our house, which was selected as one of the 50 most beautiful homes in Quebec for a book published a few years ago. We named it Tara after the house in my favorite movie, ‘Gone With the Wind.’” Gigi named their dog Scarlett after the heroine in the same film. The Havanese enjoys the water too, and always joins the couple on their boating adventures. The semi-custom 112 that the Titleys would take delivery on was ready for production when they signed the contract in late 2018. Gigi spent the following eight months fine-tuning and updating the layout, and selecting woods, stones, fabrics, fixtures, and the like. “It took a while to get it to our specs, but we had a great experience with Mike and Jeff,” she says. “There were so many choices. And there were times when spaces that had been built had to be taken apart because they weren’t quite right. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it.” She worked very closely with Tyrell, who was the liaison between the Titleys and the construction team. “He was very professional and made sure everything was done properly. He’s the type of person you need for a project of this type, where each detail is important.” Gigi wanted to be involved in every decision. She’d even take the time to meet with designers at the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA) in Fort Lauderdale on multiple occasions to select furnishings for the yacht. “She was involved in everything, right down to the buttons that go on each pillow,” says Oliver. “She is meticulous, and that’s why this is one of the most beautiful 112s to be produced yet.” “It’s very luxurious and our favorite boat to date,” says Pierre. “It’s not a diamond in the rough. It’s a real diamond, like my wife.” The Titleys succeeded in making the 112 their own with custom touches, including the addition of a gym—it replaced one of the four staterooms on the accommodations level. The gym as well as the

60

MarineMax Lifestyles

lower level guest staterooms all have private marble-clad bathrooms and showers. “The gym was a must because we are spoiled,” says Gigi. “When we travel we have a chef on board and we eat so well that we have to exercise to stay in shape.” There were a number of features on the yacht that appealed to them from the start. The deep and wide side decks were among them; they make it easy to move around topside. The main salon is lovely and bright and has a dining area for 10 as well as a bar. Also, the galley is quite sizable with all the latest appliances and a sitting area. And for convenience on long trips, there is a large laundry room and extra freezers and refrigerators. The couple also liked the location of the full-beam master stateroom on the main level; they don’t have to descend a long staircase to access the owners’ suite when leaving the entertaining areas aft. This is a split-level master suite with an area two steps down that feels more like a spa resort than a bathroom, as it has a whirlpool tub surrounded by marble, an oversized shower, and marble floors. The master has two

walk-in closets and a small bathroom on the bedroom level, so they do not have to negotiate stairs in the middle of the night. “I love the master suite,” says Gigi, “It’s a beautiful room with large windows, so there is always a lot of light. There’s also a sitting area, where I go to read and relax.” One of their favorite spaces is the enclosed sky lounge that includes a pilothouse for the captain. For guests, there’s a card table, loose chairs, and lounges, and a flat-screen TV, all surrounded by warm woods and cool stone counters in the tradition of a fine country club. Outside the enclosure is more entertaining space, including a large table with plenty of seating, teak lounge chairs, a wet bar with stools, and a grill. The 112 is a true trideck, and that top level, called the Sky Deck, really appeals to this couple. There’s a table and chairs for meals, a bar for cocktails, and a hot tub for any time of day. “It’s a great place to be when you’re anchored in a place like The Bahamas,” says Oliver. The Titleys took delivery of their boat in late fall of 2019 and did a shakedown

cruise to The Bahamas, heading south into the Exumas. The boat ran about 23 knots at top end and cruised near 16 knots. “We told them this boat will go anywhere they want,” says Oliver. “They like Ocean Reef and The Bahamas, but they can take it farther.” Future cruising plans include Europe. The couple hopes to ship Gigi IV overseas and spend a few months exploring ports in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Portugal. They had wanted to do this trip in the summer of 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic put those dreams on hold. Even so, the Titleys are happy with their new yacht. “Some of the things we love most about boating are the opportunities it provides to travel, take in views and meet other people with boats,” says Pierre. “We’re enjoying our new Ocean Alexander. We’ve got it made. We have everything we need.” Gigi agrees with those sentiments. “The boat is like a little palace on the water. It’s turned out to be the yacht that Pierre and I have long dreamed about.”
