SUMMER 2021

MARINEMAX LIFESTYLES

AT THE HELM Welcome Hello Summer! What a great time to get out on the water and enjoy all the wonderful benefits of boating! The waterways, coves and islands will be alive with the excitement of families enjoying time together. This past year was heartwarming and satisfying to have had the opportunity to welcome a record number of new boaters to our family and to provide them with a way to spend quality time close to home with their family and friends. The waterways were packed as many boaters discovered or rediscovered the many benefits of the boating lifestyle. As always, we continue to look for new opportunities to enhance the boating lifestyle. We recently acquired Cruisers Yachts, which added a premium yacht in the 33’ to 60’ range to our product portfolio. Additionally, we introduced several new yachts, including the Aquila 54 Yacht Power Catamaran to our Aquila fleet, which you can now experience on one of our MarineMax Vacation charters in the breathtaking British Virgin Islands. We hope you enjoy this issue and find it useful in planning your summer boating adventures. Inside you will find enjoyable stories shared by some of our boating families, highlights about some of our products, boating safety, classes, MarineMax Getaways!® and more. We

have also shared information about our partnership with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation which is dedicated to conserving the marine environment for future generations. Please reach out if there is anything we can do to make your boating experience better. We hope you have a wonderful and relaxing summer on the water.

AN ICON

REINVENTED Get to Know Sea Ray’s Next-Generation Sundancer® 370 Outboard.

F

or more than six decades, Sea Ray® has been known for its distinctive style, superior quality boats and perfectly crafted moments out on the water. This year, in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Sundancer Series, Sea Ray has reintroduced an icon with the recent launch of the all-new Sundancer 370 Outboard. A fusion of performance and beauty, the Sundancer 370 Outboard is leading the evolution of the Sundancer line while setting a new standard in luxury sport cruisers. This award-winning model is the first boat to showcase Sea Ray’s new design language established to help guide the future of its designs. The development of the Sundancer 370 Outboard began about two years ago when Sea Ray collaborated with BMW’s Designworks to produce a fresh set of design principles. The goal was to reimagine the core characteristics of the brand while keeping the essence of Sea Ray intact. As a result, the team selected

four attributes: sleek, confident, athletic and distinctive to guide the design of every new model. Built from bow to stern with the new design language, the Sundancer 370 Outboard is the inaugural boat to represent the new aesthetics. You’ll instantly recognize its classic Sea Ray traits, like the familiar curve of the hull and the integrated Sea Ray badge. As a modern take on an American classic, the Sundancer 370 Outboard is a cruiser, bowrider and coupe all combined into one versatile vessel. It’s built for how you experience boating – whether you want to share a romantic weekend getaway or a day out on the water with the kids. There are multiple spaces to enjoy that have been expertly crafted for comfort and conversation. The U-shaped cockpit is ideal for hosting dinner parties and cocktail hours with a wet bar, and options that include a flameless Kenyon® grill, refrigerator and teak tables. With seating for up to five friends or family members,

the bow transforms with an optional filler cushion from a table to a spacious sun lounge. The three-position convertible transom seat easily transitions from a hard-back surface when underway to an aft-facing seat or sunpad when at rest. Every inch of the Sundancer 370 Outboard has been carefully considered to maximize space and function. The port-side walkthrough makes accessing the bow effortless and ensures there are no compromises in space in either the bow or cabin below. Available in an open or enclosed coupe configuration, the Sundancer 370 Outboard has an optional electrically actuated opening glass hardtop with black panoramic skylight. There are also two sunshade options (cockpit and bow) that handle harsh UV rays while letting in plenty of cool breezes. Below deck, the Sundancer 370 Outboard features chic yet friendly design elements. The cabin is luxuriously appointed with inviting amenities for an oasis-like retreat on the water. Hull-side windows and a skylight welcome in natural light, the spacious head is equipped with a separate shower and spa-like finishes, and the forward V-berth lounge area with a plush L-shaped couch and smart TV offers a cozy spot to host a movie night. The galley has a microwave, refrigerator, sink and solid-surface countertop to help prepare drinks, snacks and meals. When it’s time to rest for the night, the L-shaped couch converts into a master bed for two and the mid-berth features fill-in cushions to form a bed for two. Kids will

love gaming or watching movies on the optional mid-berth smart TV and digital antenna. Additionally, the Sundancer 370 Outboard presents a multitude of innovative technologies. It’s propelled by powerful triple Mercury® 300 Verado® outboard engines with Joystick Piloting for Outboards, Active Trim control and monitoring, and optional Dynamic Running Surface™. Offering the latest in intelligent command, the intuitive helm is equipped with a Dual Digital Dash™ featuring optional Simrad® NSO evo3 16” touchscreen displays with standard Mercury Marine® VesselView® Mobile. Other highlights include CZone® digital

switching providing full lighting control and optional RGB-W accent lighting and thru-hull underwater lighting. Also available is an optional Seakeeper® 3 gyroscope stabilizer and a Fusion® Premier audio system with an Apollo RA770 touchscreen display. The Sundancer 370 Outboard is a first-of-its-kind cruiser that embodies elegance, athleticism and sophistication – and it’s already attracting attention. In May, it was honored as a 2021 Top Product by Boating Industry magazine. To learn more about this model, visit marinemax.com.

Fishing | Scout

Unconventional VOYAGE David Hampton makes his annual pilgrimage to the Bahamas in a Scout 177. By Sue Rodman

When David Hampton walked into the MarineMax Orlando store to buy a 17-foot boat to take from Florida to the Bahamas, sales consultant George Morgan knew exactly what he needed. But that wasn’t the boat David Hampton came to buy.

H

ampton was lured into his local MarineMax store by a video of the Scout 177, a sportfish boat from the innovative owner-operated Scout Boat Company. “I saw the lines on the Scout and said to myself, I need to go see that,” mused Hampton. “I’ve had bigger boats, but the Scout is the best designed boat I’ve ever owned.” Morgan tried to convince him he’d be better off in a different boat, like a parent imparting hard learned wisdom on a teenager. “Scout boats are fantastic, but he was looking at a bay fishing boat to take into open seas on the Atlantic Ocean. That’s just not what it’s made for,” said Morgan.

12

MarineMax Lifestyles

But Hampton, who has been boating since he was a kid captaining a blow-up raft off the coast of his grandparents house in the Bahamas, was undeterred. He knew what he was buying. He wanted something that would let him explore the reefs and shallow inlets of the Bahamian Cays. With an eight-inch draft, the Scout can maneuver in two feet of turquoise blue Caribbean water without worrying about running over a rock or into a sand bar. The Scout 177 boasts many standard features that are options on other boats, or simply not available, something Hampton values. For instance, the Scout has 12-inch wide gunnels with recess cleats, making it good for docking or fishing.

MarineMax.com

13

The live well, near impossible to find on smaller boats according to Hampton, keeps his bait fresh. A Fusion Bluetooth stereo with four six-inch speakers is also standard, as is LED Lumishore lights. The console offers easily accessible aircraft style toggle switches and Yamaha digital gauges. Courtesy lights on each side make it easy to see, a good feature when the weather brings in darkness. Bay Star hydraulic steering, MP3 and 12-volt USB ports complete the simple panel. Beneath the helm seat is an igloo cooler to keep his spearfishing catch, plus tackle and netted storage. The engine, a Yamaha F70, isn’t too big and has good fuel economy. With a 20 gallon fuel capacity, Hampton was able to go about 130 miles without refueling, something he truly appreciates in the Bahamas where gas is expensive. In the end Morgan capitulated, but made sure that Hampton’s Scout had every conceivable safety feature – a VHF ship to shore radio with an eight-foot antenna, upgraded 10-inch Garmin chart plotter, and sun top to shade from the water’s reflection. Hampton set out on the 800-mile journey to the Bahamas with his stepson Anthony just after a front came through and kicked up the seas. At one point, the boat was taking on six-foot waves. “It wasn’t dangerous, but annoying,” said Hampton. “We took the waves at 20 miles per hour, it’s either that or three.” On the seven-hour trip, he spent about half the time airborne. With a test like that, you’re sure to find all the kinks in the armor.

14

MarineMax Lifestyles

“There was one little quirk on the boat,” said Hampton. “A stainless steel nut came loose in a power junction which made the engine cut off. I called George and he put me in touch with MarineMax mechanic Doug Toney who told me where to find the connection. I tightened the nut and a year later, it’s the only issue I’ve had. It’s a great boat.” Hampton enjoyed the entire boat buying experience at MarineMax. “This has been the most enjoyable purchase I’ve ever made,” gushed Hampton. “I bought the smallest boat they sell, yet every time I walk into that store, they treat me like I purchased a multimillion dollar yacht.” And service didn’t stop with the sale. When he brought his craft in for a minor tune up and inspection, he dropped the boat off in mint condition. “It was clean, and had been stored in an air conditioned garage, so it looked good,” he said. “When I picked it up not only had they done the work on the boat, they washed and waxed

it for me, it looked so beautiful I didn’t want to take it out.” Hampton didn’t get to the Bahamas last summer due to COVID. It was the first time in his memory he hadn’t spent a summer in the Caribbean. He’ll be back though, and next time it may be in a 34 foot Scout.

Education | Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation

Q&A WITH GUY & JESS HARVEY BY LISA HARRISON & KELLEY BARRY, HOSTS OF MARINEMAX’S FROM THE HELM BOATING BROADCAST.

T

his year, MarineMax celebrated Earth Day with marine wildlife artist and conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey and his daughter Jessica Harvey! Here are some highlights from the Boating Broadcast interview. MarineMax: What is your favorite fish? Guy Harvey: The Blue Marlin, nothing

comes close. From an early age, my parents revered the animal because of how hard it was to catch. I didn’t catch one until I was 17. It was in a rainstorm, and he had lost his bill. I was mortified that the fish wasn’t perfect. It reminded me of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. He wrote the story and it really captured me. It’s remained with me all my life. I’ve been all over the world and seen everything from Nassau fish, whale sharks, white sharks and thousands of billfish and blue marlin. But every time you have one on the line, it feels like the first time.

16

MarineMax Lifestyles

MarineMax: How many species do you

think you have painted in your lifetime? Guy Harvey: I like to paint from nature and things I’ve seen myself. There are very few fish that I’ve painted that I haven’t interacted with. Traveling to the East Pacific in the early ‘90s has allowed me to paint more species. I think I’ve done everything from Alaskan salmon, orcas, humpbacks, seals, otter, halibut – I caught a 340-pound halibut while I was up there. And then, of course, leatherback turtles, seen on the picture behind me. I also experienced many American game fish that I wasn’t exposed to in the Caribbean, like redfish, speckled trout, and other species. As a marine scientist, I was exposed to a lot of fish! MarineMax: How do you go about

starting to paint these pieces? Guy Harvey: It all comes out of my “onboard computer” [referencing his memory.] I get asked this question

a lot, does it come from pictures? I take many photos and videos because we’re usually there to do something else, research-related, but I always remember what I see. You have seconds underwater with these animals, so you better capture it with that onboard computer! Unlike photography, you can reenact a situation or compose your own like the painting behind me. It’s a predator-prey interaction, so you have something happening. There’s drama, action, and movement, and it’s not just a static fish portrait. MarineMax: [Referencing Jessica Harvey]:

Growing up in this world must have been a great learning experience about nature and art. How was it, and what are some of the memories you have? Jessica Harvey: I’m so lucky. My brother and I have always grown up outdoors. When we were younger we only had two channels on TV. We spent time

“We would see dad come back from his expeditions and see what he would come back and paint and feel extremely inspired. “ Jessica Harvey

17

outside surrounded by dogs, went to Jamaica to see family, went down the rivers, fishing on the weekends, and we’d go to this tiny island called Maiden Key. We would see dad come back from his expeditions and see what he would come back and paint and feel extremely inspired. So, from day one, I always knew I was going to do something with wildlife. Every summer we would go somewhere new. The value of travel and experience that comes from studying these animals in the wild as opposed to looking at photos has been instilled in me from a very young age. Being a project manager for the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation has helped bring his art, learning, and experience to the classroom and new audiences. We help communicate why this research is precious because this is what happens in our oceans. MarineMax: How are you bringing your

love for wildlife into your local community? Guy Harvey: April is Ocean Conservation month, so we make a considerable effort every March to bring awareness into the classroom. We work with many stakeholders in the community and go to the Cayman International School to bring these experiences to the classroom and inspire kids to learn more. Especially in the Caribbean, there is such a fear of the ocean, and many kids are afraid of swimming. Our Shark Talk educational initiative brought in over a thousand kids every year for a 2-day learning experience. They watch a documentary we produced about sharks, and then we discuss it. We ask the kids why they are afraid of sharks. Then we present the truth, so they learn and care and eventually want to have a voice for conservation. Spring is that time of year to use our experience and knowledge from decades of research in an educational format. Most are not taught about conservation in school and how important marine life is to their future. That’s why we have so many opportunities and scholarships through the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

18

MarineMax Lifestyles

MarineMax: What ways can people

contribute to the Guy Harvey cause? Guy Harvey: First would be to support the Guy Harvey brand and buy the brand merchandise where proceeds help fund the foundation. We also partner with other brands where a portion of their proceeds goes to the foundation - Guy Harvey specialty license plates, the Florida lottery, Guy Harvey TAG Heuer watches, Ford’s specialty F150, Sea World ticket sales. And, of course, we do onsite appearances to talk about conservation and spread the word. Amazon Prime has a series of Guy Harvey Expedition documentaries online that show the work if anyone is interested in learning more.

Fishing | Boston Whaler

SOLD ON WHALERS MarineMax helps couple get the most out of their boating passion. By Steve Bornhoft - Guy Harvey Magazine

20

MarineMax Lifestyles

E

mily and Bernhard Schmid have a Boston Whaler habit. It began when the St. Petersburg couple bought a 10year old, 16-foot Dauntless, a boat they would enjoy for 10 years. For Emily, the modest vessel was a reminder of the little Whaler her father had as a kid on Cape Cod. Today, the Schmids own a 24-foot Dauntless Pro and captain a 42-foot Outrage. But it was as owners of the 16-foot Anchor Lady that they became familiar with Whaler culture. “We were impressed by the support we got from Boston Whaler,” said Bernhard, who grew up in Austria where his boating experiences were limited to sailing and paddling on lakes and rivers. “It was very easy to call Whaler and get parts and the assistance we needed to keep things in shape. We started enjoying the brand a lot.” The Anchor Lady became a focal point in their lives. When they moved from renting to home ownership, a chief consideration in a house was a garage large enough to house the boat.

Selling the 16 was emotional, Bernhard said. The Schmids were picky about whom they sold it to, but they had deemed themselves ready to move up to a bigger boat. They opted for a larger version of the Dauntless they had made their rookie mistakes on, one large enough to be outfitted with a comfortable half-tower. The Schmids use the 24, named the Reel Lady, for flats fishing and joining flotillas off sandbars. Emily likes lazing in the tower, even when the boat is on plane. “I’m up there waving like a prom queen on a magic carpet ride,” she said. In 2017, the boat family was joined by a big sister, the 42-foot Knot Reel. The Schmids captain the larger boat for offshore bottom fishing and trolling, entertaining and cruising, often with family and friends and never without their Jack Russell, Tater. The dog, said Emily, is tiny but tough enough to pull a tuna across a fishing deck. Our COVID refuge has been doing West Coast cruising and anchoring,” Bernhard said. In purchasing all family Whalers, the Schmids dealt with sales consultant Jayson Lake at MarineMax in Clearwater.

MarineMax.com

21

Bernhard described Lake as an owner’s advocate. “Jayson makes sure that if you have an issue with your boat, the service team does its job,” he said. “He is one of those sales guys who never leaves you high and dry,” added Emily, giving Lake the perfect compliment for a man in his role. Not that Bernhard leaves much to chance. He is that rare individual, Emily said, who reads owner’s manuals from cover to cover, and he knows his boats “inside and out.” When their Outrage was being built, the Schmids stopped by the factory to check on progress. Engineers there told them that they were setting up their boat precisely as they would have. There was a time when the Schmids learned a few lessons the hard way. In the Anchor Lady, they once ran out of gas within a few hundred feet of a marina in Marathon just as it was closing. Trailering the 16 to the Keys on another occasion, their progress was interrupted three times, twice by blown trailer tires and once by a broken bearing. Now,they carry spares. And, on one occasion, the Schmids took advantage of MarineMax’s mobile dispatch service. Again, they were in the

22

MarineMax Lifestyles

Keys when a steering actuator went out on their boat. A technician arrived from Clearwater at 5 in the afternoon, worked until 11 to replace the part and saved the trip. Both of the Schmids are consultants, he in health care IT and she in organizational development, and both have a captain’s license. They hope to take a month’s sabbatical this year and cruise to Exuma in the Bahamas. They love the Outrage. “It does everything,” Emily said, describing in particular the boat’s summer kitchen and its freezer and refrigerated compartments. At Whaler rendezvous events, she has become known for preparing bacon and eggs with plenty to share. “That’s how you make friends at a marina,” she said. “When we head out,” said Bernhard, “it’s not do we have sandwiches packed, it’s do we have a charcuterie board.” At present, the Schmids are building a house on the water in St. Pete. Their first priority for the new place. Boat slips. “If I could have five boats at one time, I would,” Emily said. Music, perhaps, to Jayson Lake’s ears.

arineMax is heralding this summer’s boating season with the slogan, “Together again with your crew” and for many veteran boaters, this means reconnecting with old friends who have become part of their extended family on the water. New members of the MarineMax family are about to learn many additional ways to have fun with their boats and discover the bond a shared experience like boating can bring.

GETAWAYS! ®, DAYAWAYS!, AND OWNER RENDEZVOUS ARE BACK! Unfortunately, in 2020, most of the organized activities that have been the hallmark of MarineMax boat ownership had to be canceled for safety, but for 2021, many of the events you’ve grown to love are back. Dayaways! are short cruises to local hotspots and are great ways to meet new friends and learn where to cruise in your area. Getaways! are multi-day to multi-week events to popular destinations all over the country and even the Bahamas. These events are especially liberating for new boaters as they get to cruise to destinations along with experienced owners and representatives from their local MarineMax locations who can help them expand their horizons. Although some new boaters might be intimidated to be around more experienced boaters and feel they might be a nuisance or even looked down upon, the exact opposite is true. Veteran boaters love helping new boaters learn to have fun with their boats. Seeing their enthusiasm is infectious and helps rekindle memories of when they experienced the thrill of boating for the first time. And new boaters can be secure in the knowledge there is no mistake they can make that experienced boaters haven’t already done. New technology has made piloting even larger vessels far easier thanks to innovations like joystick docking and enhanced navigation aids, which greatly shorten the learning curve.

THE POWER OF THE SCHEDULED EVENT As things return to normal, one thing that’s happening is schedules are getting more crowded with work-related duties or by events that were closed during the pandemic. One of the casualties can be the vague promise of “let’s go boating this weekend” without having a real plan. Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of going on a MarineMax event is something simple: it gets written down on the calendar. By having it scheduled, boaters manipulate their schedule around Getaways! or Dayaways!, not vice-versa. Another benefit is the anticipation of knowing on a certain date you and your family will be out on the water having fun. Gazing at your calendar and seeing a scheduled MarineMax event while participating in an endless Zoom meeting is certain to put you in a better mood. Another way to connect on the water with like-minded boaters is to go on an Owner Rendezvous, which are trips to places like the Bahamas or the Florida Keys with other owners of your boat brand like, Scout, Boston Whaler, Galeon, Ocean Alexander, Azimut and Aquila to name a new.

HELPING YOU FIND THE BOAT THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU One of the challenges for people who wanted to buy boats in the last yearand-a-half was low inventory, which was exacerbated by the fact the pandemic halted or slowed down production of not only boats but needed components. MarineMax sales associates are trained to know how to match a family with the perfect boat for their needs. Your local MarineMax has access to every vessel in the entire network, so your sales associate is able to check inventory or help you order your next dream boat. With the recent acquisition of SkipperBud’s and its affiliate, Silver Seas, the choices are even greater.

MARINEMAX HAS PLENTY OF WAYS TO EXPAND YOUR BOATING KNOWLEDGE One of the best tools available to help those new to boating expand their boating, fishing, and safety knowledge is MarineMax’s hands-on classes and onwater training sessions. While many of these in-person seminars were canceled over the past year-and-a-half, MarineMax beefed up its online options with an allnew online platform that launched in 2020 to help boaters of all experience levels learn new skills and boat more safely. Popular Women on Water® courses are back and are designed to empower women who want to take a more active role by getting behind the wheel.

MARINEMAX APP MAKES YOUR BOATING LIFE EASIER The MarineMax App takes just seconds to load onto your smartphone and its goal is to help customers spend more time on the water and less time taking care of their boat. It allows owners to tap into a wealth of information and gives the ability to communicate with their dealer in a new, streamlined way that makes it easy for them to look for a new boat, schedule service, start a warranty claim, set up a private showing, find available training classes or even ask for help while out on the water. When customers create a My MarineMax account online, the app syncs with that account to make its operation seamless.

THANKS TO THOSE WHO KEPT US BOATING There’s no doubt the pandemic presented huge challenges to keeping MarineMax customers supplied with boats and provided with service to keep them running. It wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated employees of MarineMax who came to work every day under trying conditions to make sure everyone could stay out on the water having fun. This year has its own set of challenges but getting back to normal means getting together with your crew is once again a reality.

A

s soon as Lou and Nicole Miele closed on their house in St. Petersburg, they headed to their local MarineMax for a boat. When they saw the Aquila, they fell in love. MarineMax consultant Nick Pavlakis had only been on the job three weeks when the couple walked into the showroom. He initially showed them the Aquila 36 Sport. “As we toured the 36, we both kept looking over at the Aquila 44 Yacht and finally said, if we’re going to end up with that boat, let’s just get it,” laughed Nicole. Eight months later, Pavlakis learned the slot for hull number one of the Aquila 54 Yacht was available. He immediately called Lou and Nicole Miele. “I really wanted hull number one,” smiled Lou. “Nick has been terrific. Our boat ownership has grown with his career and he’s become a good friend, we even attended his wedding. In fact, the whole team has been wonderful. The experience of building the boat has been exciting and fun, even amid COVID restrictions and delays.” Because of the pandemic, the Miele’s built their boat via Skype calls and progression photos. The design team even took some of Lou’s suggestions for the vessel. Finally in February of 2021, the Liquid was christened.

The Miele’s first adventure on the Aquila 54 Yacht was an eight-day trip to Key West’s Galleon Marina for three days of exploring with friends Dan and Rhea McCallister, Dan’s brother David and his girlfriend Terri. The three couples had vacationed together since 2014, and were excited to take the Liquid’s maiden voyage. The trip showcased for the Miele’s their favorite feature of the Aquila 54 Yacht – space. “The 54 feels more like a yacht than a power cat. There are five major areas to gather,” Lou counted. “We had six people for an eight day cruise and there was plenty of room to get away if you wanted. One night we all watched a movie in the salon and never felt like we were on top of each other.”

Nicole enjoys cooking in the kitchen and appreciates the full-sized Fischer Paykel double door refrigerator and freezer. With the back window flipped up she can be a part of the conversation, whether guests are seated at the bar or in the spacious sun-shaded aft deck. “The long table on the aft deck seats eight and is much easier to get in an out of than a booth,” Nicole commented. Lou loves the luxurious glass-enclosed Skylounge flybridge saying, “It’s a game changer. The air conditioning and heating make it more relaxing on long trips.” In addition to temperature control, the helm station has full sized captain’s chairs for exceptionally comfortable seating, a Raymarine screen with a Volvo Penta

display plus Aquila’s Intelligent C-Zone that controls everything on the boat with a touch. There is also room for an additional display on the port hand side. The Miele’s like to entertain and the Aquila 54 Skylounge Flybridge has plenty of space to do just that. A booth table has reversible seating to face inward, or out toward the aft bridge where the kids can relax on beanbags and watch the waves as the steaks sizzle on the Kenyon grill. The Aquila 54 Yacht has two stairways including a Portuguese walk around making it easy for even a two-person crew to manage the boat. A center walk through leads to the bow deck where two comfortable sun loungers can lay flat or flip up for versatile seating. Both Miele’s crooned about the full beam forward master stateroom with panoramic views through hull side windows. There is a portside workstation to WFB—work from boat, as well as a walk-in closet. Built in night stands have a drawer and concealed outlet to charge electronics while you sleep. Touch lighting controls make it easy to read in bed. “It feels like a regular bedroom rather than a boat stateroom,” offered Nicole. The Aquila 54 Yacht comes with three, four and five cabin options, as well as skipper’s quarters and ‘galley-down’ layouts. Like the master, staterooms offer generous amounts of natural light. The Mieles’ chose the five-cabin option, which allows all five of their children to sleep onboard at the same time. Although the couple hired a captain for their first trip, the next adventure they plan to pilot themselves. They are working with MarineMax Captain Chris Hoegstrom to learn the ins and outs of driving the 54. “Chris coaches us on using the bow thrusters, which we didn’t have on our last boat,” said Lou. “And he’s working with us on navigating. We are getting more comfortable, more independent.” The family has a busy summer planned. They are excited to take the wheel for Aquila’s annual Rendezvous in July at South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island. And another trip to the Keys is a must. Their son Lorenzo wants to go fishing ‘anywhere he can drop a line.’ Daughter Ali has yet to see the new boat. But mostly they are looking forward to making memories with friends and family. SURPRISE AND DELIGHT HGTV’s Mika Kleinschmidt matches a dream boat for her husband Brian to their new dream home. By Sue Rodman

F

ans of HGTV’s 100 Day Dream Home know that hosts Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt always surprise clients with a carefully selected extra that helps the new owners create lifelong memories. When the couple decided to do their own dream home, Mika surprised her husband with a brand new ATX 22 Type-S boat from MarineMax Orlando. And the reaction was priceless. As MarineMax salesman Nick Cochran drove the boat across the water to the dock, Brian Kleinschmidt was clearly shocked, stammering in disbelief, “Is that really ours? …. Oh my god? …. No way? … Did you really do this?” Finally the truth began to sink in and delight took over as he literally skipped onto the boat proclaiming, “This is awesome!’ The journey to the big reveal however, started several months earlier when Mika contacted MarineMax Orlando. “I had never bought a boat before and didn’t know anything, except I wanted something sleek and made for water sports. I read about the ATX online,’ said Kleinschmidt. “Nick was a huge help and because he wakeboarded competitively, he knew what features were important.” Kleinschmidt and Cochran worked in secret for four months. “Mika told her husband she was checking out countertops, but we were really building

Just lift color palette of their new house, and a and rotate to face front or back. In addition, removable flooring, instead of carpet that gets wet backrests can be shifted to make plush and mildewed. And when spills happen, transom seats. just hose it down and allow any water to “I love the versatility of the seating,” escape through the drain valve. crooned Kleinschmidt. “We’ve had about 10 people on board and everyone was able to lounge out and get comfortable.” The switch system InCharge phone holder with Bluetooth connectivity keeps the party going with tunes cranking through the Wet Sounds system. And when the Florida sun gets too much, the 20’ bimini is so easy to deploy it can be done by one person. As with any sport boat, storage is important to keep gear out of sight and the cockpit clutter-free. Cochran helped Kleinschmidt get all the right gear and the ATX has plenty of places to store it, including a deep area that fits a full sized surfboard. Under the transom seats is a convenient tray for ropes and life jackets. Standard on the 22 ATX Type S is a 6.2L Closed Cooled engine by Indmar. This quiet motor offers the perfect balance of torque and a smooth, relaxed ride, without blasting out the neighbors,

something Kleinschimdt appreciates since their lake doesn’t allow jet skis because of the noise. Closed cooling keeps lake or salt water out, and maintains consistent engine temperatures for better fuel economy, and performance. It also helps eliminate corrosion resulting in a longer engine life. The best feature of the ATX though is the GO System powered by TAPS 3T. Using three tons of pressure, the TAPS 3T creates ocean-worthy waves instantly. The ATXperience control center syncs with the TAPS 3T to lock everything in place; simply choose the wave steepness or wakeboard level on the touch screen and bam, you are ready to go with the only decision being what level to surf. A RearView Camera allows the captain to keep an eye on surfers while focusing straight ahead. Kleinschmidt never thought she’d drive the boat, but after a lesson from Cochran, she is as comfortable as her husband behind the wheel. “Driving is super easy and the controls are really user friendly and straight forward. The (7-inch) touchscreen to the right of the steering wheel lets you control everything including music, lights, cruise control,

and the waves with a simple touch,” she boasted. Truth be told, after a few months of boat ownership, the couple still haven’t wakeboarded yet. Their daughter, Jade, prefers to tube, and Brian and Mika enjoy just cruising the lake to experience Florida’s killer sunsets. “Buying this boat was a really cool experience. I loved having a team to coach me along the way,” said Kleinschmidt. “A boat is a big financial decision and since I was doing this on my own, I relied heavily on Nick and MarineMax. They came through with everything I asked from a tight timeline, to teaching us how to use the boat, to helping me secure wakeboards, tow ropes and other boat toys.” In addition to wakeboarding and surfing on the lake, the Kleinschmidt’s are ready to take their boat into the Gulf of Mexico. “We’ve practiced on the lake, now it’s time for the ocean,” Kleinschmidt smiled. “I can’t wait to go to Downtown Tampa, the Riverwalk, and be part of the Gasparilla boat parade – all the things that make this area unique.”

A LUXURIOUS WEEKENDER Yacht DNA found in Galeon’s new 32-footer. By Brady L. Kay - Great Lakes Boating Magazine

E

stablished in 1982, Galeon Yachts is a privately-owned company which specializes in constructing luxurious yachts and motorboats. You’ve most likely seen the majority of its impressive lineup on the Great Lakes consisting of high-end yachts ranging from 41 to 72 feet in length. These stunning yachts are all beautiful, but it’s their largest models such as its 650 SKY and 680 FLY that the manufacturer is best known for. However, what you haven’t seen before, at least not until recently, is a 32-foot version from Galeon that is being released for the 2021 model year. Galeon Yachts’ history and high-end reputation are based primarily on its larger yachts, but after intense market research and seeing a void in the industry— combined with the fact the outboard segment continues to grow—the

44

MarineMax Lifestyles

manufacturer knew it could attract a wider audience by offering a new model, and thus the 325 GTO was born. “It was three years in the making as it’s been on paper for years and so much went into it,” said Galeon U.S. Brand Manager Bob Burke. “We interviewed our customers and found what the market was looking for. We gave Galeon a list of pillars they needed to hit with this boat that the market was demanding.” Powered by twin Mercury Verado 350hp outboards, the Galeon 325 GTO measures 32 feet, 9 inches (9.99 M) in length overall with a beam of 10 feet, 11 inches (3.28 M). From the full hardtop to the in-hull ports, everything you see is molded in—not cut out and inserted, making the intricate design well worth the effort for the impressive result.

MarineMax.com

45

ATTAINABLE QUALITY In keeping with Galeon’s philosophy of leading rather than following, the engineering and design teams were limited only by their imaginations when creating the brand-new GTO line. Design, quality and features are abundant with a stunning multi-color lighting package, single-level deck throughout, power adjustable helm seats and steering wheel, and interior appointments consistent with their larger yachts. “Galeon Yachts is an aspirational brand for many and we are extremely honored to bring hallmark quality, design, and innovation to the brand-new 325 GTO,” said Jacek Kobylko, the president of Galeon Yachts, who commented from the factory in Poland. “This outboardpowered, feature-rich, 32-foot craft ensures Galeon is attainable for a larger audience of boating and yachting enthusiasts.” With the outboard power the manufacturer feels it makes their brand available to more potential buyers and hints that this is only the beginning. The evolution of the Grand Touring Outboard (GTO) collection is something Galeon engineers will continue to work on with rumors of other models in this series predicted to follow.

U.S. BOUND While you could see this new 325 GTO in the European market, Galeon has made it clear that it’s going after the U.S. with this new release. “As a dealership, MarineMax prides itself on building deep relationships with our customers. Galeon listens to what we want as a dealer and transforms those

wants into world-class boats,” explained Chuck Cashman, MarineMax chief revenue officer. “Those customers share with us their wants and desires for their current and next boats. Galeon seems to have no boundaries for design and innovation and compressing the normal design timeline and always seems to be just ahead of the pack.” MarineMax is the nation’s largest recreational boat and yacht retailer and it will offer the new 325 GTO throughout all of its locations including through its SkipperBud’s dealerships. In October last year, MarineMax acquired SkipperBud’s to gain 20 locations including those in the Great Lakes region in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. The timing of the acquisition is perfect for our area since the versatility of the new 32-footer

will be a great fit for Great Lakers looking for a day boat or weekender with Galeon quality.

WEEKENDER “What’s even more remarkable is the 325 GTOs are so nimble and innovative without ever compromising on quality,” added Cashman. “It’s a wonderful blend of leading-edge innovation and design married to old-world quality.” Galeon’s mission is to lead through innovation and design and the Galeon 325 GTO is a prefect reflection to that dedication with a stylish family cruiser that is revolutionary for its size class. “It’s not a huge boat at 32 feet, but it feels like a huge boat,” said Burke. “With entrances on both sides you gain a greater flow onboard and from the full windshield to the side that folds down, the 325 GTO has sleek lines with the DNA of Galeon.”

BEACH MODE The new model features Galeon’s Beach Mode where the portside of the boat folds down, increasing the beam of the boat and providing easier access to the water. The unique fold-down platform is an innovative design that allows the aft area to open up, creating an entirely new feel to the boat. Designer Tony Castro, renowned for his ultra-luxurious superyacht projects as well as all Galeon models, created the extra expanse for enjoying watersports or sunning. In combination with the plush transom seating, which can face fore or aft, the platform offers unrivaled versatility. 46

MarineMax Lifestyles

ADDED TOUCHES

LIGHT IT UP

While the stern gets plenty of muchdeserved attention, the intricate and brilliantly designed helm console with a full-width, single-piece windshield and fully-loaded dash remains the boat’s main focal point. “The helm is really laid out nicely and the seat adjusts up and down, not just the tilt wheel, so you can stand or sit and be extremely comfortable while driving,” added Burke. A walk-through section to port lets you access the plentiful bow seating without stooping, climbing, or squeezing through a small opening. In a feat of ingenious engineering, this section slides up into the hardtop, preserving full standing headroom and all-around space for you to pass. The bow area is the perfect social spot and comfortably accommodates a crowd, since the 325 GTO carries the full beam forward.

From the state-of-the-art speakers in the bow to the well-equipped helm— where the twin seats look like they came straight from a sports car—and to the bold nameboard aft, LEDs illuminate everything in a sophisticated yet nightvision-friendly blue hue. For additional practical needs, the toe kick lighting turns to white at the press of a button. And, speaking of light, sunlight streams into the comfortable cabin through a side port. Brightness like this is unheard of in this size, and a proud hallmark of Galeon Yachts.

VERTICAL INTEGRATION Galeon’s successful designs are the direct result of relying on as few of outside vendors as possible when constructing its boats. Being a vertical integration manufacturer to them means not only building its boats in-house, but taking

care of the upholstery, paint, stainlesssteel work, engineering and woodworking as well. The manufacturer even makes its own hinges. “If you need something, you’re not at the mercy of a vendor to get it to you,” added Burke. “We’re governed only by our own imagination.” The new 325 GTO with the power and reliability of twin outboards combined with Galeon quality is sure to be a hit on the Great Lakes as this new series of highend boats are released. If we’ve learned anything from this manufacturer it is we should come to expect the unexpected as anything is truly possible from this builder. To learn more, visit marinemax.com/galeon

50 Ways For one owner, it was love at first sight when he decided to size up to an Azimut 50 Fly. By Kevin Koenig

S

ometimes a boat is so pretty, it nearly sells itself. That’s effectively what happened when Bill Polyi set his eyes on his new Azimut 50 Fly at the 2020 Miami Boat Show. Sure his long-time MarineMax salesman Paul Mahoney played a role in introducing Polyi to the brand, but the 50 just had a certain spark all its own that Polyi knew he couldn’t live without. “He had been looking at some other boats,” says Mahoney, “some Sea Ray Sundancers and such, and maybe a Sunseeker, but I told him the Azimut would be a perfect fit for him, for what he was looking to do. It’s got that big flybridge,

a tremendous flybridge really, which is what he wanted. And I told him it would be in Florida and he actually flew down there without me to check out the boat. And sure enough, he liked it enough to buy it.” “It’s a big purchase,” says Polyi, an aviation executive based in North Carolina, but who does much of his boating using Long Island, New York, as a home base. “And it’s not one I take lightly. This Azimut is a big jump up for me [from a Meridian 391]. But I’ve been contemplating getting a boat like this for years, and once one became available, with the market the way it’s been with the pandemic, I knew I had to jump on it.”

MarineMax.com

49

Polyi, a car buff, was first taken aback by the Italian builder’s legendary lines. It’s no coincidence that the country that produces some of the most iconically styled automobiles of all time—Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Ferraris—would also offer up yachts that are pure eye candy. “When I first saw the 50, I was drawn to the lines and the fit and finish,” says Polyi. “I’m big on elegant lines. That’s how I pick my cars and my boats—and Azimut just does the lines on its boats so well.” “And also my wife loves the layout,” he continues. “There are so many areas to lounge in, from the salon to the back deck to the forward deck to the upper flybridge. She just loves it. That, and having the galley up. That was her one requirement. She likes to be in the conversation with the family.” But much like most boaters, for Polyi, his new yacht had to be more than just for show, she had to have some “go” as well. “The 50’s performance really stood out to me when I drove her for the first

50

MarineMax Lifestyles

time down in Florida,” he says. “I wanted 30-knots plus. And as you know, a lot of boats in this size range do not have that kind of speed on their resume. But this one did, which I really liked.” Polyi has twin 725-horsepower Volvo Penta D11s on his boat, an engine choice which he is very happy with. “Pods are great for some people, but they’re expensive to fix,” he says, “I wanted straight shafts for ease of maintenance. I can take them anywhere and people will know how to fix them.” And of course, the longtime boater knows he can count on MarineMax’s widespread and well-trusted network to help him along his way. “With MarineMax it’s the service, and the support. It’s always been excellent,” Polyi says. “I bought my first boat from them back in 1986 when it was called Surfside3 Marina, and that was seven boats ago. And I’ve been very happy with them ever since. Between Paul and the service team, the overall level of care they have provided, and the attention

to detail they’ve shown, it’s just been excellent. They’ve always been there for me, and I feel like a VIP with them.” And MarineMax will continue to be with Polyi as he brings his new boat up from Florida to the Northeast for the summer. As of press time the boat was in Charleston and gearing up for the final legs of its journey This summer Polyi is planning on hitting such legendary hotspots as Montauk, Block Island, Newport, Rhode Island, and Martha’s Vineyard, all with his family and friends in tow. He is particularly looking forward to this year’s 4th of July festivities. He’s planning on taking a full boat to New York’s Hudson River to watch the fireworks displays. “That’s what it’s all about,” he says. “It will be a celebration, and it will be with family and friends. After years of experience, I can tell you this: there’s very little joy in boating alone.” And with a boat packed with people he loves and MarineMax at his side, the future is looking rather joyful for Bill Polyi.

M

arineMax, Inc. (NYSE: HZO), has acquired KCS International, Inc., better known as Cruisers Yachts, headquartered in Oconto, Wisconsin. Cruisers Yachts (Cruisers) is recognized as one of the world’s premier manufacturers of premium yachts, producing models from 33’ to 60’ feet. Cruisers, due to demand, recently announced the expansion of their production capacity by purchasing a 216,000 square foot, purpose-built boat manufacturing plant in Pulaski, WI. Such expansion allows Cruisers to more than double its capacity over time. MarineMax’s acquisition of Cruisers Yachts ensures it

will always have a premium, American built yacht in its product portfolio. The Company expects the acquisition to be accretive in its first full twelve month period. With over 100 years of heritage, Cruisers has successfully navigated through various industry cycles and grown through innovation and product leadership. After launching the distinguished design and innovation of the Cantius yacht series in 2011, Cruisers’ growth and market share accelerated. The Company successfully navigated through the 2020 pandemic, producing revenue of over $75 million. Cruisers

has an accomplished dealer network, including SkipperBud’s and Silver Seas Yachts, which were acquired by MarineMax in October 2020, plus five recently added MarineMax locations. Combined, MarineMax accounts for nearly half of Cruisers’ revenue on an annual basis. W. Brett McGill, Chief Executive Officer and President of MarineMax stated, “The strategic acquisition of Cruisers Yachts benefits our customers by filling a meaningful void in our product portfolio which was created in 2018 by the loss of Sea Ray sport yacht and yacht models. The acquisition also aligns with our long-term strategy of expanding our gross margins

by adding a higher margin business. Cruisers has a seasoned, passionate and successful team. Their industry knowledge and their recent expansion, combined with MarineMax’s resources, will enable Cruisers to accelerate its positioning in the market. We can continue to expand and grow with Cruisers’ model line-up in markets that are available. We are excited to have Mark Pedersen join our management team as he will continue to lead the operations of Cruisers’ more than 350 team members.” Mark Pedersen, President of Cruisers Yachts stated, “We are very excited about becoming part of the MarineMax family and the great opportunities that lie ahead. Over the years we have recognized that certain customers prefer to only buy an American built yacht, and our brand compliments MarineMax’s other offerings. The MarineMax team has a proven track record of great success in our industry. With our loyal Cruisers owners and a strong dealer network, we will all greatly benefit from being a part of MarineMax.” Prior to the acquisition, MarineMax’s financial capacity, consisting of cash and cash equivalents, along with available borrowings under its credit facilities, exceeded $400 million. The Company paid $63 million for Cruisers, including the recently acquired Pulaski, WI facility.

Q&A BRETT MCGILL INTERVIEWED BY ALAN JONES

W

e asked Brett McGill a wide range of questions about growing up in Florida, taking over the reins as CEO and President of MarineMax from his dad, Bill McGill, and then navigating through the pandemic. Alan Jones: Your dad, Bill McGill, founded

MarineMax back in the 1970s and had to be incredibly busy when you were growing up. How did he make the time for family boating? Brett McGill: Sunday was always our day. After church, there was no question we would be boating. For us, it was all about competitive waterskiing and I loved it. We went to a lot of tournaments and spent a lot of time together, which I’ll never forget. I taught all my kids how to waterski and they especially love to wakeboard and wakesurf, but we didn’t go down the competitive route. Watersports are something you can enjoy recreationally but it still challenges you. Alan Jones: Your dad combined his

business acumen with an incredible enthusiasm for boating to create the largest boat retailer in the world. How daunting of a challenge was it to succeed him as CEO? Brett McGill: Dad had a vision for our industry like no other and I don’t think there will be another like him. He taught us if we work hard, good things will happen. He created an atmosphere for me to learn, not to be his successor. As a public company, it was up to our board to choose his successor so when that time came, I was happy I was qualified, had a successful track record and was excited about the opportunity. My job is not to replace my dad but to carry on his legacy and take the company to new heights while creating new opportunities for our team.

60

MarineMax Lifestyles

Alan Jones: During the pandemic, kids

were spending a lot more time in front of a screen than ever before. How instrumental is boating to breaking that connection? Brett McGill: That’s a topic that I sometimes like to talk about it because I have two boys in high school and two in college, so hopefully, the screen time they have is mostly studying. But when we’re on a boat I never have to say, “Hey, put that screen down.” Because when you are out fishing, snorkeling or skiing, the kids are too busy having fun to need an electronic device. Alan Jones: How did you stay connected

to your customers — especially the new ones? Brett McGill: It was very tough. Although we never lost connection, we couldn’t do any events until the end of last summer, but when we did have them, they were smaller. Boaters were really passionate last year; a lot of times we just stayed out of the way and just let everybody go boating and have fun. We had some new tools like the MarineMax app that helped us stay connected while socially distancing. Alan Jones: How were you able to keep

customers supplied with boats, given the huge demand coupled with the shortages that occurred? Brett McGill: Last summer we had plenty of boats, but the problem was how do we deliver them to our customers on time? At first, our team was just trying to figure out how to come to work and operate under the restrictions that were imposed. Our priority was keeping our employees safe and we kept reemphasizing that point. But keeping up with the incredible demand for sales and service wasn’t easy. But our customers needed us, so that drove us to rise to the occasion.

Alan Jones: How about later in the year? Brett McGill: After the summer season

finished, that’s when the lack of inventory kicked in. Many boat builders and vendors had to shut down for a while, then demand surged, which created new challenges for everyone. But we had many advantages over smaller dealers. First, we only sell premium brands so people were comfortable buying remotely. Other key attributes were being flexible and reacting quickly to changing conditions. We have 77 locations so we might have a boat scheduled to show up at Brick, New Jersey tomorrow that hasn’t sold yet but our Baltimore store says they’ve got a buyer, so we got good at rerouting boats on-the-fly to meet demand. Alan Jones: Now that things are opening up

again are you afraid those new to boating will get out of the sport? Brett McGill: Some may go back to their old way of life but there will be many who will be boaters for life now that they’ve experienced the joy of boating and how it helps a family grow closer. We are doing our part by teaching them how to boat safely, how to have fun on the water and service them to make boat ownership a fun and easy experience. If you do all those things right, it’s a life-changing experience.
