SUMMER 2022

MARINEMAX LIFESTYLES

AT THE HELM Welcome Summer is here, and that means exciting times in the world of boating. There’s so much happening on the water and in the industry that the proposed challenge may be deciding what to do. With numerous MarineMax classes, vacations, charters, events, and Getaways!® happening all across the nation, enjoying and experiencing a new adventure is always a possibility. See all our events online, download the MarineMax App, or reach out to one of our many store locations for more details. Since our last publication, much has transpired within the company. MarineMax has partnered with Boatzon, an online experience that enables boaters to easily access boats, engines, trailers, insurance, and more. Boatzon’s innovative technology allows consumers to purchase a boat online from start to finish. We are excited to leverage Boatzon’s innovation to enhance the marine buying experience. MarineMax also acquired Superyacht Management, S.A.R.L., better known as SYM, based in Golfe Juan, France. SYM is now part of Northrop & Johnson, another division of MarineMax. This business strengthens our ability to provide superyacht management services around the world. MarineMax continues to make strides within the local community by dedicating a home to a deserving family through Habitat for Humanity. For the fourth year in a row, MarineMax team members have volunteered their time and labor to help complete a home presented to the new homeowners in an April ceremony. Additionally, team members have also taken pride in local beaches by participating in multiple beach

cleanup events. MarineMax continuously strives to be a positive part of the community and have a lasting impact not only on the water but in other areas of people’s lives as well. As always, the MarineMax team is looking for even more ways to improve what we do to help make boating and being on the water an even more enjoyable experience for you, your family, and your friends. Your business is very important to us, and as a valued customer, your feedback is always welcome. We hope you enjoy this new issue of MarineMax Lifestyles. Inside, you will find enjoyable stories shared by some of our boating families, highlights about our products, classes, boating safety, MarineMax Getaways!, and more. Until next time, stay safe and make the best of your time on the water this summer and beyond.

powered by a Mercury® MerCruiser® 6.2L MPI ECT Bravo Three® engine with SmartCraft® Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), and the outboard model is propelled by a Mercury 300 Verado® engine with SmartCraft DTS. The SLX 260 exemplifies the latest advancements from the Sea Ray design and engineering teams to steal the spotlight and turn heads out on the water. The model is the first sport boat to embody Sea Ray’s next-generation design, first seen on the Sundancer® 370 Outboard in 2021. The SLX 260 showcases a sleek, contemporary aesthetic paired with classic Sea Ray characteristics such as the hull curve and integrated Sea Ray badge. In addition, everything from bow to stern has been carefully considered by Sea Ray in response to feedback from

boaters—from how the vessel moves through the water to the placement of USB charging outlets. The SLX 260 features reimagined seating for optimized ergonomics and comfort. The deeper seats allow for a smoother, more luxurious ride. As one of the most stylish and social boats on the water, the SLX 260’s deluxe cockpit encourages interaction with L-shaped bench seating, opposing seating, and cooler storage for up to two soft-sided coolers. The U-shaped bow offers lounge-style seating with foldable armrests. As part of the Comfort Bundle, a teak table and filler cushion can be added to complement the bow. The table can be used to share snacks, and the filler cushion converts the bow into a large sunpad.

The SLX 260 has been thoughtfully configured to maximize space and function. At the transom, the expanded sunpad presents a relaxing place to lounge and take in the sights along the water’s edge. Blending seamlessly, convenient storage has been incorporated throughout. An integrated cooler under the sunpad can be filled with ice and drinks or kept empty as dry storage to safely stow items. A storage area next to the cooler is ideal for storing gear, f loating water mats, and inf latables. A compartment in the cockpit f loor keeps ski and wakeboard equipment easily accessible and out of the way when not in use. Adding a sporty look to the SLX 260, the optional next-generation Power Tower with an automated extended sunshade presents f lexible options for letting in the sunshine or providing coverage from the weather. It can be lowered or raised with the touch of a button, and removable canvas sections can be unzipped to reveal a T-top. The Power Tower can also be upgraded with Fusion® Signature Series tower speakers, part of the Entertainment Bundle’s Premier Audio package, and LED RGB-W color -changing lighting with a Sea Ray logo projection is available with the Lighting Bundle. Additional tower upgrades include a Bimini top and a manual bow sunshade.

MarineMax Lifestyles

The SLX 260 showcases a host of technologies that provide intelligent control and simple monitoring of the boat’s systems for experienced captains and new boaters alike. The helm places everything within reach and is equipped with a Dual Digital Dash™ featuring 9” Simrad® touchscreen displays with Mercury Marine VesselView® Mobile, active trim control and monitoring, and CZone® digital switching. As part of the Entertainment Bundle, the helm can be enhanced with an inductive charging station to keep devices powered all day long. The vessel also offers a Fusion® audio system with an Apollo™ stereo and optional Dynamic Running Surface™. The stereo can be upgraded to the Fusion Premier Audio package, including an Apollo touchscreen display, Signature Series speakers, transom remote unit, and more.

For effortless customization, boaters can choose to elevate their SLX 260 with option bundles. Fishing | Boston Whaler

A SOCIAL MEDIUM And more reasons to love the Boston Whaler 320 Vantage. By Jeff Hemmel

MarineMax Lifestyles Lifestyles 18 18MarineMax

B

oston Whalers are known for two things, being unsinkable and being one of the best fishing boats around. But Jeff Rumley and his wife Michelle didn’t buy their Boston Whaler 320 Vantage, christened, Cammi-Lynn, for either of those reasons. The Rumleys moved to Naples, Florida, from Michigan with their Boston Whaler 330 Outrage. They had loved the Outrage on the Great Lakes, but in Florida, they realized their needs were different, so they visited their local MarineMax store and met consultant Kyle Rice. “Most of the boating we do in Florida is day boating,” said Mr. Rumley. “We wanted something large enough to be comfortable for a large group and something that protects us from Florida’s summer sun. Kyle had such detailed knowledge of the Whaler products that he knew exactly what we needed. We still keep in touch.” The 320 Vantage was the perfect boat to satisfy both requests and more. It isn’t just the ample seating throughout the boat, but the incredible variety of award-winning convertible configurations makes entertaining guests easy. A foldout stern seat with an elevated backrest can accommodate 3-4 adults comfortably. Portside seating in the cockpit includes three doublewide benches that can face

forward or aft and transform from seats to chaise lounges to large sun pads. Pull out the bench along the transom for a complete conversation circle. The bow of the boat has even more seating, including forwardfacing lounges that sport f lip-down armrests. Everything on the 320 Vantage is exceptionally engineered. In addition to under-seat storage, the side bulwarks have stainless steel drink holders and multiple 12V accessory plugs. The boat is perfect for entertaining a crowd. “We ventured out with seven people on a Chamber of Commerce kind of day for a trip to Key West,” recalled Mr. Rumley. “We

had luggage, coolers, and tons of stuff, yet everyone had a seat. The weather turned on us, but the fact that we could do a five-and-a-half-hour trip with that many people and all their gear comfortably says a lot for the practical potential of the boat.” On a recent trip to Islamorada, the boat comfortably accommodated 10 adults. The Vantage takes care of the Rumleys’ other request too—shade. The 320 Vantage has a large, wellequipped hardtop that provides protection from the harsh Florida sun. An electric SureShade retractable sunshade awning provides additional protection for guests out on the water via a switch at the helm.

MarineMax.com

19

There are other reasons to love the Vantage. Even loaded with 10 passengers, the twin Mercury 350 engines are quite fuel-efficient. And while many people love the optional joystick steering, Jeff Rumley thinks it makes handling the boat too easy. He did get a bow thruster to help with the occasional wind and tide challenges, but mostly for resale purposes. Options aside, what really matters to him is the craft’s performance, reliability, and integrity. This is the Rumleys’ third Whaler, and according to them, the “fit and finish is exemplary.” Although the Whaler is a great fishing boat, with rod holders all around, fish boxes at port and starboard, and an impressive galley with sink, 18-gallon cooler, and prep surface, the couple prefers cruising with friends. They use the starboard dive door to easily access the dock on their way to dinner rather than hauling in fish. “We’ve done a little fishing,” said Mr. Rumley. “I can find the fish; I just can’t catch them! We prefer lazy days on the beach, low-key scenic cruising, or hitting the restaurants and bars for some people watching.” One of their favorite haunts is Island Gypsy Café on the Isle of Capri, where you can’t leave without

20

MarineMax Lifestyles

trying the grouper sandwich, and The Little Bar in Goodland, where Rumley suggests being careful with the shortcuts. “On the way to the bar, I decided to take a shortcut down the river below the Marco Island Bridge and got stuck in the mud,” he mused. “Thankfully, the tide was rising, and we were only grounded for about 20 minutes. When we got back to the boat club, the crew told me you aren’t a Florida boater unless you’ve grounded your boat, so I guess I’m official now.”

Although the Rumleys love a big crowd, there is nothing better than a calm day going way out in the Gulf on Cammi-Lynn away from the beaches, away from the crowds, killing the motors, and just f loating.

Fishing | Aquila Power Catamarans

MAKING POWERCATS

MAINSTREAM A decade since its launch by MarineMax and Sino Eagle, Aquila has become a truly global brand. By YachtStyle Magazine

Aquila 70 Luxury

F

ollowing the presentation of the upcoming Aquila 41 Yacht at this year’s Miami International Boat Show, it’s a good time to look back at how the brand has grown around the world, including in Asia—especially with the company celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. When Aquila was launched as a partnership between MarineMax and Sino Eagle, it was initially perceived

22

MarineMax Lifestyles

as a ‘challenger’ with innovative ideas and designs. Yet, in only 10 years, it has become the leading brand in the fastgrowing power catamaran sector. Early models included the Aquila 48 and the 44, both inboard f lybridge models, and the latter is still in great demand. In total, about 180 units of the 44 Yacht model have been ordered, making it the world’s best-selling inboard power catamaran.

Aquila 36 Sport

Aquila 32 Sport

EXPANDING RANGE However, the brand started to really escalate in 2017 due to the introduction of its first outboard model, the Aquila 36 Sport, and the start of a global distribution policy. Aquila President Lex Raas appointed J&J Design to design the 36 Sport, an outboard engine crossover bowrider with two en-suite cabins. This unique, innovative design started a new trend industry, with nearly 200 orders for the model received in only five years. The range then expanded with the Aquila 32 Sport, a smaller model with a similar design. Next up was the Aquila 54 Yacht, a f lybridge model offering three to five guest cabins and crew quarters, which confirmed the brand’s leading position in the power catamaran segment.

Aquila 44 Yacht

This was followed by the f lagship Aquila 70 Luxury, a fast-cruising yacht produced in an adjacent yard from the other production models. The 70-foot hull is vinyl ester infused in a single piece, while the interior features highend finishes and Italian furniture. The brand’s newest model in the water is the Aquila 28 Molokai, a blue water fishing boat available with a center console or in a Cuddy version. And in Miami this past February, Aquila announced the 41 Yacht, which will launch in early 2023, along with the Aquila 47 Molokai, the new f lagship offshore model. GLOBAL GROWTH During the brand’s first 5 years, sales were nearly exclusively in the USA, and the decision was made to grow the network of dealers. Aquila now has

representation, stock availabilities, and after-sales service in over 20 countries. The most important aspect of the global expansion was selecting trustworthy partners that are service and customer-oriented, as internationalization started in Australia, then focused on Asia and Europe. Today, the brand has a solid, stable presence in Asia-Pacific. There are dealers in Australia and New Zealand, while Asia includes representatives covering South Korea, Hong Kong, China, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam. In Europe, coverage is still developing but already includes Spain, Portugal, Italy UK, Greece, Turkey, Austria, Germany, and Croatia, while international growth also included appointing dealers in Canada and Mexico. Fishing for Fun and Adventure in Aquila’s New Offshore Models BRIGHT FUTURE Simpson Marine, Aquila’s leading representative in Asia, sold the first Aquila 70 Luxury outside of the USA, and the yacht is scheduled to be delivered to Singapore in the coming months before it cruises to Bali. The client added some nice customizations such as solar panels and lithium batteries that can run the air-conditioning silently. At the other end of the size scale, the first Aquila 28 Molokai was delivered to Florida, followed by the second to Hawaii. The first in Asia was delivered to Malaysia at the end of last year, and it sold within a week of successive showings in Penang and Port Dickson. Further units have been ordered for Canada, Hong Kong, and Singapore. To cater to Aquila’s growing demand, the factory is now almost 107,639.10 sq. ft (100,000 m²) in size and features three large production centers along with a brand-new threestory office building. The shipyard has also invested in a private marina that facilitates testing and control quality.

Twenty years ago, power catamarans were a novelty. Even just 10 years ago, they were a niche market. Today, power catamarans have become mainstream, with catamaran builders producing more models, and even ‘monohull’ brands are beginning to produce twin-hulled motor yachts. In fact, power catamarans have become the fastest-growing segment of the yachting industry, with many different sizes and styles that appeal to owners of monohull motor yachts, monohull sailing boats, and of course, catamaran lovers. Considering all this, Aquila’s second decade looks set to be as exciting as its first.

It’s a Small, Small World By Fred Garth/Editor, Guy Harvey Magazine

I

decided to brush up on my Español because Guatemala was in my near future. A few other special treats awaited me in Central America, such as catching some hefty blue marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, and other fishy brethren. I was also quite stoked to fly over an active volcano, feast on fresh tuna steaks, and tour the architectural wonders of Antigua, a mind-blowing city built by the Spanish in the 1600s. What I never expected to happen was to bump into a couple who were close friends with one of my friends. You know, one of those “it’s a small world” moments. Ultimately, I’d left Florida’s humidity for Guatemala’s humidity on a fishin’ mission. My intrepid business associate, Brian Rowland, and I had assembled a Guy Harvey Expedition with 19 excited anglers, all ready to embark on some of the planet’s best sailfishing…or as they say in Guatemala - pez vela (pez=fish, vela=sail).

Our crib for four days was the luxurious Pacific Fins Resort, an intimate lodge with cuisine to rival a fine Parisian eatery. The resort is situated on the Pacific Coast in the busy little city of Buena Vista—a town that’s a blend of artisanal fishing, vacation homes, and lots of motorcycles buzzing around, carrying multiple people with their hair flying in the wind. Note to self: start a motorcycle helmet store in Buena Vista. The flight into Guatemala City drops you into a sprawling city of seven million people. Blasting through those traffic jams was priority one. Fortunately, we had a plan. Just 20 miles to the southwest is the cool (literally) town of Antigua which sits at an elevation of 5,029 feet, making the climate muy tranquilo. While the serene arches, stone fountains, lush parks, cobblestone streets, and massive medievalesque wooden doors will make you think you’re in Spain, Antigua also has deep Mayan roots.

MarineMax.com

27

The town is neat and tidy, with an ample selection of quaint hotels featuring colorful gardens, swimming pools, and breakfast for $50 or less, making this a popular spot for budget travelers. The more discriminating traveler can find five-star luxury for as little as $125. The cobblestone streets are lined with shops offering chocolate tastings, fine rums, rich locally grown coffee, and hand-crafted jade jewelry that is mined in Guatemala. The Mayan culture considered jade sacred and used it prolifically, even embedding it into their teeth. Bottom line, this is a town worth visiting for several days, but we only had a few hours because our destiny was el océano. If your idea of a good time is speeding down a bumpy highway, Guatemala can deliver that thrill ride. Or you can choose the 20-minute flight to the coast that offers wonderful views of sprawling mango and sugarcane fields and an up-close flyby of three of Guatemala’s 37 volcanoes. I know this because I elected to take the flight, but only because I was concerned about Brian’s old back injury. What can I say? I’m considerate. Our crew settled in at the resort and had an amazing dinner of fresh fish, shrimp, locally grown veggies, bread, and desserts so decadent they will destroy every diet plan on the planet. After sufficiently stuffing ourselves, we gathered in and around the pool for after-dinner cocktail chit chat. I noticed a guest, Robi Roberts, proudly sporting a bright red Boston Whaler t-shirt, so I swam over to Robi and her husband, Dan, and asked the obvious question. “So, do you own a Whaler?” I asked. Turns out they’d recently bought a new 36-foot Outrage with triple 350 Mercurys. “We’ve owned quite a few Whalers,” Robi noted. “We’ve even become good friends with the Boston Whaler folks.” Buying a lot of boats has that effect. “Really, do you know Traci Davis?” I asked, getting right to the point. “Of course,” Robi said. “She’s a good friend and has helped us for years.” Aha! And there was the one-degreeof-separation connection. Traci is a senior marketing manager at Boston Whaler. She, Brian, and I had been working together for a year or so and had planned and orchestrated a truly epic boating experience on a 420 Outrage 50th Anniversary Edition and a 405 Conquest.

One delightful evening during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, we all cruised into the perfectly manicured Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club, with all eyes on us, to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation’s swanky annual gala with Dr. Guy Harvey and his daughter Jessica on board, while broadcasting the entire event worldwide on Facebook Live. Whew! Somehow, it all came off without a hitch. I didn’t get into the details of that boating extravaganza with Dan and Robi, but we confirmed our mutual friendship with Traci and some of the other Whaler peeps. Robi revealed that she loves her new Outrage and usually drives it because “it’s the smallest boat” they’ve owned.

Well, okay, I thought. I’m still driving a 17-foot Montauk while coveting the 24foot Vantage. And although she doesn’t look it, Robi is in her mid-70s, so her boat captaining prowess impressed Brian and me. In the end, Robi, Dan, and the rest of us caught and released more than 125 sailfish. Brian and I even caught a couple of nice-sized sailfish on the fly rod and were inspired to form the exclusive Pacific Fins Fly Club. We also made a date to convene in South Florida on the 36-footer and celebrate with our new friend group. Brian and I promised to bring some Guatemalan rum and chocolate.

Apart Together A Baton Rouge couple discovers the best way to reconnect is to disconnect in the British Virgin Islands. By Liz Pasch

P

aul Ferachi was at a business event and overheard his colleague-friends reminiscing about a boat charter vacation they had taken in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). He was immediately intrigued, and they invited Paul and his wife Candi to join them on their next trip. That first trip launched fifteen more years of chartering boats with MarineMax Vacations in the BVI with friends and family. Paul and Candi’s previous boating experience was primarily with much smaller boats near their home in Baton Rouge, LA. Paul is the third-generation owner of Capitol City Produce, a produce and food distribution company started by his grandfather in 1947,

with distribution centers in Baton Rouge, LA and Robertsdale, AL. Their family of six children—three sets of twins—enjoyed waterskiing and other watersports on their two ski boats, a Cobalt 252 and a MasterCraft. But Paul had never operated a larger boat until his friend and colleague, Bruce Baker, who is also in the produce distribution business, invited him to the BVI. “Bruce had been chartering for several years and taught me what I needed to know,” Paul explains. He describes his first experience with dual engines and throttles on the Aquila 484 as very different from the ski boats he was accustomed to, but after only a couple of hours of practice during the trip, he felt very comfortable.

31

After a few years of chartering with the same group of friends, Paul and Candi felt they had enough experience to book their own charters with their six children, the youngest of whom was six years old. “Years ago, I read an article about a family boating experience on Lake Powell and how the teenagers didn’t want to go because there was no WiFi, but it ended up being their best family bonding trip,” says Candi and adds that there’s absolutely nothing better than being on the boat together whether you’re with friends or family. Paul says part of the appeal of the Aquila is that it’s so easy to operate and not at all intimidating. “It was very easy to transition from operating a ski boat to the Aquila,”

32

MarineMax Lifestyles

Paul explains. “When you’re on a charter, in a couple of hours, you get very comfortable, so your whole vacation isn’t spent learning how to operate the boat.” After a dozen or so years since their first family charter, Paul has now taught the older Ferachi children how to operate the boat and the youngest how to navigate and pick up mooring balls. “The galley setup also plays a big role on the Aquila,” adds Paul. During the family’s most recent trip in July 2021, a pandemic lockdown was put in place the day they arrived, and eating at restaurants was near impossible. “We usually have a big breakfast on the boat, go on the island for lunch, and then make reservations for dinner. This time

there was a curfew due to COVID, so we ate most of our meals on board. I called it glamping!” According to Candi, the key to a successful charter foodwise is to prepare in advance. “A lot of people provision the boat through the charter company, but the last ten years, we’ve provisioned it ourselves. The taxi drops us off at the Rite Way (grocery store) and picks us up when we’re done. We have a system down.” Candi adds that she sometimes packs non-perishables in her suitcase that she knows aren’t available on the islands. She also suggests spending extra time getting familiar with the appliances before leaving the dock. “Even if you need assistance from the MarineMax base during your charter, they’re quick to

respond and get to wherever you are, if needed.” Paul and Candi agree that a MarineMax Vacations charter in the BVI is one of their favorite trips with the family because it keeps everyone together in one place, and no one disappears with their friends. “A boat trip is a together trip,” says Candi. “Even so, there are several different areas on the boat to spread out if you need a little space. You never feel crowded.” One of their favorite spots is the island of Anegada since it’s a long day trip, and they get to enjoy cruising on the open ocean. “Being in the food distribution business,” Paul says, “the fresh lobster dinner, served family-style, is certainly a draw.” They also enjoy Cooper Island and Leverick Bay on Virgin Gorda.

Paul sums up some of the multiple benefits of a BVI charter vacation. “It’s just so easy. You’re never out of sight of land. The islands are close, the water is good, and you’re not docking all the time. If you never do this trip, you’re missing out.”

Throughout the year, MarineMax Vacations will be offering prizes such as social media giveaways and a chance to win a charter vacation of a lifetime in the BVI. If you want to participate in the sweepstakes for the 6-day/5-night trip aboard our award-winning MarineMax 443, visit us online at marinemaxvacations.com to submit your entry. THE TEXAS FAMILY THAT

PLAYS TOGETHER The togetherness factor of the Spain family got a big boost from MarineMax Texas MasterCraft. By Alan Jones

38

MarineMax Lifestyles

W

ith four active teenagers, Scott and Rachel Spain wanted to get more proactive to maximize quality time together. So, they bought an Eagle Mountain Lake retreat in 2020, not far from the sprawling metro of Dallas/ Fort Worth, and the kids fell in love with the lifestyle on the water, making extensive use of the arsenal of water toys that included jet skis, a trampoline, tubes, and paddleboards. But one thing was missing. Although Rachel’s family had ski boats when she was growing up, the Spains had never owned a family boat. “I remember the feeling of camaraderie while slalom skiing with my family and wanted my kids to experience that same feeling,”

Rachel recalls. Her family had purchased their last boat from Texas MasterCraft, which became a new member of the MarineMax family in 2021, so that seemed like a good place to start. “In March 2021, we walked in and met Todd Nicol, the sales manager, and immediately felt comfortable,” says Scott. The XT22 caught their eye, and Todd agreed it would be the perfect first boat for them. It’s the right size for new boaters, it’s fuel-efficient, and can handle any watersport.” Being their first boat, Scott had lots of questions for Aaron, the delivery captain, who showed him how to use every feature on the boat, how to set up the wake, and dock the boat. “Aaron was very patient

with me, and I had the sense he was willing to stay as long as it took for me to feel comfortable,” says Scott. The boat was a huge hit, and surfing quickly became the favorite activity for all the kids. Andrew, who is now 20, quickly became the most avid wakeboarder and surfer in the family and would gladly spend all day behind the boat. His brother, Dylan, 18, loves to mix it up and find a nice cove to drop anchor and jump in the water. Madeline, 16, likes to go with the flow and join whatever her brothers and sister want to do. Allison, 14, loves music and uses the killer MasterCraft sound system to act as the family deejay. So far, the biggest thrill on the water for everyone came when the kids talked MarineMax.com

39

their mom into giving surfing a try. “My wife Rachel is very athletic,” says Scott, “and it only took a couple of tries before she was able to toss the handle and free surf, which led to a tremendous cheer from everyone. They’ve tried to get me to surf, but so far, I’m content to just be the chauffeur and drive the boat.” But it wasn’t long before a problem materialized with the boat: it was too popular. At times, there would be as many as 14 people on board, so less than a year after they bought it, Scott and Rachel were back at MarineMax Texas MasterCraft talking to Todd. When they saw the X24—they fell in love. The extra room and elevated level of comfort were an immediate draw, and they appreciated the additional freeboard along with its striking black tower and tan interior. “Performance-wise, it’s like driving a Tesla on the water, and its surfing wave is massive,” says Scott. “So, I told Todd, ‘We’re going to give you this one back, and Rachel and I are going to take this one home.’ We were prepared for a big hit on depreciation, but it never occurred. The XT22 pretty much held its full value, and we were able to jump to the X24, starting with a clean slate.” To alleviate the concern of docking a bigger boat, Todd recommended they get the X24 equipped with a stern thruster. “I am still learning the fine points of docking a ski boat,” explains Scott, “and the thruster has made docking much easier.” Scott co-owns Luxor Staffing, an employment agency responsible for filling thousands of light industry manufacturing positions, and he knows the challenges in

the current business climate of finding and retaining employees, so he was amazed by the quality of service at MarineMax Texas MasterCraft. “I’ll tell you why they are the number one MasterCraft dealership. It’s because of the people, from top to bottom. The boat is a top-quality product, but it’s the staff that makes all the difference.” When it’s time to get the oil changed or the boat winterized, Scott just calls Todd, and they pick up his boat and service it.

“Where else can you get service like that today?” asks Scott. “Our first year owning MasterCraft boats has greatly exceeded our expectations,” says Rachel. “Everything Scott and I do at this point are to find ways to have our kids around us doing things we can all enjoy together. We have a condo in Durango, Colorado, at the base of Purgatory Mountain, and we all go snow skiing, but it’s nothing like the feeling we get when we’re all on a boat together.” The Spain family is eagerly looking forward to the coming year with their new MasterCraft. Andrew is attending summer school at Texas A&M University and has vowed to make the three-hour drive from College Station each weekend to join the family at the lake. “I think his desire to jump on a surfboard might be stronger than his desire to see the folks,” jokes Scott. “But whatever the reason, we’ll take it.”

Making Strides

IN THE COMMUNITY MarineMax is helping out across the nation in many ways. By Charlene Marie Dodge

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida Since its inception, MarineMax has always been a company known for exceeding expectations, no matter what arises. And aiding the community falls right within this part of its mission statement and aligns with some of the company’s values, which are to always do what is right and to treat others as we want to be treated. While MarineMax spends much of its time creating joy on the water, the company also dedicates a good portion of it towards causes and helping others in need. Below are some of the charitable contributions and recent events the company has taken part in so far this year.

On March 11, MarineMax Fort Myers hosted its 6th Annual Yacht Gala to benefit the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and aided in raising over $300,000 this year to help support this great cause. At this special event, ticket sales, donations, as well as live and silent auctions were held, and all proceeds went to the hospital itself. MarineMax also produced a special episode of From the Helm Boating Broadcast to explain greater detail about the event itself and interview key players that helped contribute, making this event a success.

The Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida is a new state-of-the-art facility and currently the only acute care children’s hospital between Tampa and Miami that brings the highest quality of care to kids in need. Since 2015, MarineMax has partnered with Lee Health to help fund the construction of this critical care facility and has raised over one million dollars throughout the years to help support the mission. MarineMax is grateful to all who have participated and is delighted to take part in such an event to help in all ways possible.

Habitat For Humanity For the fifth year in a row, MarineMax took part and partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco to help a family in need in Pinellas County, FL. Over a 13-week span, in conjunction with the future homeowners themselves, various MarineMax employees dedicated their time to help build a new three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for the Lvea family. From the beginning stages with a safety scaffold installation and continued through with the installation of trusses, framing, insulation, and interior trim, towards the end with sealing the grout,

caulking, painting, and landscaping, MarineMax got to be part of it all. On April 19, the home was officially dedicated to the family in a heartwarming ceremony. Brett McGill, MarineMax CEO and President, comments, “MarineMax is proud to continue to support this life-changing organization. Not only do we get the chance to change a family’s life for the better; it also brings our team together to support and contribute to the needs in our community.” Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps low-income families

across the nation and in 70 other countries improve standards of living with stable housing by enabling those who qualify for a zero-interest mortgage. With the combined efforts of the organization, volunteers, sponsors, and future homeowners, a new home is built from the ground up, allowing stability and the chance for the homeowners to build generational wealth.

Keep Pinellas Beautiful Another series of multiple activities MarineMax is involved in is keeping our local beaches clean. MarineMax partnered up with Keep Pinellas Beautiful and assisted the organization in a beneficial way. Staff members from around the Tampa Bay area did their part during the start of this year by dropping by multiple beach locations and picking up trash along the sand and shore. The beach cleanup teams did a great job aand plan to keep aiding in the effort to keep our waterways and beaches clean. Keep Pinellas Beautiful is an organization that runs multiple programs to maintain the natural beauty of the surrounding environment and keep the habitat in the area healthy for all.

Toys for Tots In the future, more charitable events are on the way. One of the larger and more widespread events are Toys for Tots, which many stores around the natation participate and collect new unwrapped toys for children of all ages. MarineMax continuously strives to be a positive part of the community and have a lasting impact not only on the water but in other areas of people’s lives as well.

THE BIG

LEAGUES One cruising couple makes a massive jump up in size with their Galeon 500 FLY. By Garner Trilsby

I

t is said that fortune favors the bold, and that certainly seems to be a motto that new Galeon 500 FLY owners Amy and Kevin McAbee adhere to. The Huntsville, Alabama couple has been boating for quite some time, though mostly on a man-made lake where they keep a home. Their most recently owned boat was a 20-foot Mastercraft, but after their 7-year-old son cast his eyes on a larger motoryacht, the gauntlet was effectively thrown down—albeit by a second grader. “My son told me he really wanted a boat that we could sleep on,” Kevin McAbee recalls. “And I was like, ‘OK, ask your mom.’ And it turned out mom really liked the idea, and here we are! People

are sometimes surprised that we made such a big step up in size, but we are really happy with the decision.” The McAbees started their search with some phone calls to boat salesmen, and the first to call them back was MarineMax’s, Richard Hunter. The three hit it off quickly and began the boatfinding process in earnest. “At first the McAbee’s were thinking they might want a Sea Ray 370 Sundancer,” says Hunter, “but based on what they wanted to do with the boat, and the size of their family, we soon decided they would need something a little bit bigger.”

MarineMax.com

47

The McAbees shortly made their way to the 2021 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show with an intent to buy. “We looked at a few different brands,” says Mr. McAbee. “We saw Princess, Azimut, Prestige, and a few others. But Galeon really grabbed us. All the other brands were asking something like 20-percent down, and then they told us that they couldn’t get us the boat until two years later. We were like, ‘no way—a lot can change in two years—we want the boat now.’ So, when we spoke to Galeon, and they told us we could have the 500 FLY right after the Miami show, it made the decision pretty easy.” But it wasn’t just Galeon’s speed of delivery that had the McAbee’s dreaming their big boat dreams. They were also impressed by many of the onboard features. “The Galeons caught our eye because they are just so innovative,” says Amy McAbee. “We liked the setup. The two suites and the bunk area. Our sevenyear-old has his own space when we go out with friends—the adults can have their privacy, which is nice. The floor plan is what really sold us!”

The McAbee’s made the big decision to buy the Galeon, and the newly purchased 500 FLY was delivered to the Miami International Boat Show a few months later, where she was the crown jewel of the Galeon Yachts display. When the show was done, MarineMax brought the boat north to its Pompano Beach location. That’s where the McAbee’s and their son boarded their new vessel and set off on a trip around Florida to the yacht’s intended berth in Panama City, Florida.

“Hearing the engines fire up for the first time was great,” remembers Kevin. “it was like ‘ok this is real.’” The foursome made the trip around Florida making stops along the way, and it was a voyage the McAbees described as surreal. “Coming out of smaller boats,” says Kevin McAbee, “we never really thought this could be us, on a larger-size cruiser in the ocean. But there we were, and it was great.” For her part, Amy McAbee spent

much of the time on the flybridge, which is her favorite part of the boat. “I absolutely needed a boat with a flying bridge,” she says with a laugh, “What can I say; I like the wind in my hair.” The couple also got a chance to test their sea legs and the boat’s bona fides. While they were in the Gulf of Mexico nearing their destination, the winds kicked up and confused 4-foot waves smacked at the boat’s hull sides. But the Galeon handled it like a champ. “We were really impressed with how safe and seaworthy the boat felt in the weather,” says Amy McAbee, who is in the process of getting her captain’s license. “Plus, my 7-year-old loved the rough water. He spent the whole time in the salon trying to jump

up as the boat went over the waves, trying to feel weightless.” The McAbee’s Galeon will live in a MarineMax slip at Treasure Island in Panama City. And the couple is happy to keep the connection with the company that brought them their dream boat in such a timely manner. “I come from the corporate world,” says Kevin McAbee, “I know what it takes to run a good company, and MarineMax has that in spades. They are organized, persistent, and every step of the way, MarineMax was just outstanding to work with. I was just as impressed with MarineMax as I am with my new boat— and I love my new boat!”

Because it’s considered somewhat of a newcomer to the U.S. market, it may come as a surprise to some that Galeon is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. Founded in 1982 in Gdansk, Poland, the builder has a long history of turning out seaworthy and stylish boats that pair forward-thinking design with oldworld craftsmanship like none other. The builder has over 1,500 employees, including engineers, shipwrights, technicians, and more that work at the boatbuilding facility in Poland. “As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Galeon Yachts, we could not be more proud of the entire team’s accomplishments,” says Bob Burke, Galeon’s brand manager for the Americas. “It’s been an honor to witness the growth of this exceptional brand from its humble beginnings in Poland in 1982 to becoming the world-class brand that we’ve all come to recognize today.” With a lineup of models ranging from 32 to 80 feet, Galeon offers a range of boats that can grow with you as your boating needs change. And in part because of a strong partnership with MarineMax, this lesserknown brand is poised to grab lots of headlines over the next 40 years.

Memory Maker A break from boating helped Mark and Mary Lessuise understand how much the lifestyle means to them. By Sue Rodman

M

ark and Mary Lessuise decided to get out of cruising. After 41 years on the water every weekend, it was time to do something different. It only took one season to see the error of their ways. “I’ve known Mark and Mary for twenty years and knew the break from boating wouldn’t stick,” said SkipperBud’s sales consultant, Mike Asher. “They were just in a transition period.” An invitation to visit the Cruisers Yachts factory in Oconto, Wisconsin, coupled with pleas from the Lessuises’ grown children and grandchildren, set the stage for their boating comeback.

In the end, the couple purchased a 46 Cantius christened, Less Stress, a play off their last name and the ease of use compared to other boats they’ve had. This was their 14th boat and their third Cruiser. “Mike knew before we did that we were looking,” said Mark. “The pandemic was beginning to shut everything down, but the 46 was in stock in Michigan. We weren’t able to see the actual boat, but we did have the opportunity to take a personal tour of the Cruisers factory. Seeing the quality and craftsmanship that goes into building the boat meant a lot. The 46 is a little smaller than we’d like, but it was what was available at the time.”

“Spending time on the water helps keep our family close, and we create memories together every time we are on board.”

The Lessuises credit Less Stress with getting them through the difficulties of the last few years. It gave their family a place to get away and escape the real world while making memories to last a lifetime. The couple likes to cruise with their children: son Steve and his wife Kelsea; their children Ava, Emma, and Blake; and daughter Stephanie, her husband Nate, and their children, Cameron and Levi. From the Quarter Deck Marina in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, they have access to local haunts like Fish Creek and Sister Bay, as well as the Great Lakes. Leland, Charlevoix, and Mackinaw Island are some of their favorite stops on Lake Michigan.

A perfect day is anchoring for an afternoon and playing in the water. Innovations on the Cantius 46 allow the families to utilize the back of the boat as a swimming craft. The Cantius’ hydraulic swim platform makes it easy for the young ones to splash in the water and the older kids to climb aboard after jumping off the side. When deployed, the platform includes a staircase so even the youngest family members can easily walk up to the cockpit. Lunch and dinner are alfresco with hamburgers on the Kenyon electric grill, which is located next to a drawer-type Vitrifrigo refrigerator on the bustle of the yacht’s transom.

One of Mary’s favorite features is the convertible upper salon, which can transform from an enclosed living room to an open conversation area. With the sliding glass doors aside, there is a six-foot-wide opening that allows those that want a little more shade and air conditioning to still be part of the group mingling in the back cockpit—something that is important when you have six adults and five kids between 11 months and 12 years old on board. Less Stress also has a remotecontrolled Makefast sunshade for the cockpit. Unlike larger boats the Lessuises’ have had, there is no fiddling with attaching canvas shades—just hit a button for coverage or to close things up and head out to dinner. The versatility of the space turns the cruiser into a day boat instantly. Mark likes the Volvo Penta Integrated Propulsion System (IPS) 600 with joystick maneuvering. It’s the first IPS boat the couple has owned. The twin-engine pod system makes it super easy to maneuver and dock. The electronics package includes two Garmin™ 12-inch MFDs, which are standard in the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit System. Features include radar, GPS, autopilot, and engine data, all at your fingertips. “The technology on this boat makes it the coolest craft I’ve ever owned, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. Other boats just aren’t as fun. Although my grandson Levi is better at the joystick than me,” Mark laughed. “It must be all the video games.” The grandkids like to gather on the bow while going through the channels. The wide walkways have accent lights so you can see where you are going at any time of day. There is a comfortable lounging area as well as a side table for drinks and a portable sun sail to add shade. “Spending time on the water helps keep our family close, and we create memories together every time we are on board,” said Mary. “That year without the boat, we just didn’t get together as much.” In the end, the Lessuises cherish the memories they are creating with their children and grandchildren. They will always have a boat—the question has become, what’s the best size?

Yachting | Azimut

DOLCE VITA For a couple that was serious about cruising, the Azimut 68 Flybridge turned out to be the yacht of their dreams. By Garner Trilsby

54

MarineMax Lifestyles

M

ary and Chris Palmerton are seasoned boaters who know what they want in their yacht. So, when it was time to move up from their Sea Ray L650 Fly, they were very proactive in their search. The owneroperator couple wanted a boat that was solidly built, customizable, and able to be operated without a captain—and it had to be pretty, too. The Palmertons had already worked with MarineMax buying both the Sea Ray and a 26-foot Boston Whaler that they towed behind it for use in their frequent scuba adventures. So when MarineMax broker Mike Doyle showed them a rendering of

the Azimut 68 Flybridge, they already knew they were in good hands. “We were drawn to the boat immediately,” says Chris, “but maybe for different reasons. I liked it because it was built like a ship. We got to go over to Italy and see the factory, and I was really impressed with the way they build the boats. Plus, they were able to do some customizations for us, no problem.” Particularly, Mr. Palmerton was happy with what Azimut was able to do with the televisions on his boat. “We loved the idea of a two-TV scenario,” he says. “So, in Italy, we had them hook up a 50-inch TV in the salon and then another one in the galley

seating area. We can seat six people at each location and sync the televisions so the larger groups we like to have onboard can all watch the same movie at the same time. It’s not a standard thing Azimut does, but they were happy to do it for us.” The small crowds of family and friends the Palmertons like to have aboard are also well served by the 68’s bow area. “The bow is just fantastic,” says Chris, “we just christened this boat over the weekend and had 16 people on the front of it, no problem. And we love the carbon poles that come with the shade configuration. They are so light that I can hold two at a time. The setup could not be easier.”

AZIMUT YACHTS AT MIAMI GRAND PRIX

For her part, Mary Palmerton is enamored with the semi-enclosed galley on the 68. “You don’t feel like you’re closed off from the party when you’re cooking,” she says, “but if it gets messy, you can close it off so people don’t need to see it. And the other thing I liked about the Azimut was that it was a really beautiful boat. The styling (by Italian design whiz Alberto Mancini) was so glamorous. I love the way this boat looks.” The Azimut’s flybridge is another area that the Palmertons are in love with, in large part because they could customize it as well. “We were able to have them put a love seat with a couch and SureShade up there,” says Chris. “It’s not how it was originally set up, but they were all too happy to make the change for us. Working with MarineMax and Azimut on these little changes was so easy, and it has made such a positive impact on how we will use the boat.” The Palmertons also appreciate the 68 Flybridge’s top-notch performance. The

56

yacht has twin 1,000-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS 1350s that give it a maximum speed of 32 knots while it cruises at a brisk 28 knots. At the latter speed, it burns about 80 gallons per hour for a range in the neighborhood of 350 nautical miles per tank of fuel. The Palmertons plan on making good use of that range. As avid divers, they are particularly fond of the Exumas, where they spent a good chunk of the beginning of the pandemic and hope to go back soon aboard their new Azimut. “Once we get the boat rigged up, we plan on cruising to the Exumas for three weeks and setting up at one of our favorite spots, like Compass Cay,” says Chris. “The water there is so beautiful it’s hard to beat for what we like to do.” And with their new boat that’s designed exactly as they wanted, they can do more of what they like, exactly how they like to do it.

“There is nothing like being in Pole Position, which is exactly where Azimut Yachts was at the very first edition of Formula 1 in Miami” notes Azimut Benetti Americas President, Federico Ferrante. “With two yachts on site and a full Azimut Yachts Private Lounge to welcome customers and yachting enthusiasts alike, we have been surely rewarded with a full victory.” The MIA Marina Concept was absolutely the most televised and talked-about feature of the entire campus. The Azimut 50 and S6 stood tall, hosting race enthusiasts who purchased the yacht suites for upwards of $250K. The entire weekend was extremely vibrant, with anticipation growing and culminating into an unforgettable private race day brunch held by Azimut Yachts. Yacht suite ticketholders and our very own Azimut Yacht Owners enjoyed 5-star Seaspice chef creations, Ferrari Trento Brut-based mimosas, and live entertainment of the highest caliber. The attendees’ notable joy and positive feedback affirm Federico’s statement—“Creating more unforgettable memories for our customers was the motivation behind this activation.”

Adventures | Summer Boating

SUMMER BOATING ACTIVITIES:

7 THINGS FOR YOUR TO-DO LIST Summer is in full swing, and by now you’ve probably been out on your boat at least a few times. But, have you tried something different—like, really different while out cruising? Tow sports, fishing, and swimming are all fun, but it's time to mix things up! Here are seven summer boating activities you absolutely need to try—we guarantee they'll be boatloads of fun for all ages.

1

Boat Camping

While regular camping involves pitching a tent, boat camping simply means sleeping on your boat. Sleeping under the stars is an incredible experience. Plus, when you’re away from shore, you and your kids can identify plenty of constellations.

2

Going to a Concert By Boat

Cities around the country have music venues sitting ocean-, lake-, and riverside, plus plan concerts on barges. Additionally, some marinas arrange bands all summer long to entertain slip holders. See what’s going on in your area. This is the one time that rocking the boat won’t be a bad thing.

3

Boatgating at a Ballgame

Root, root, root for the home team from your own decks, rather than the upper deck of a baseball stadium. Or, arrive in style at a marina near a ballpark and enjoy some onboard tailgating before heading over to the game. Either way, it beats sitting in traffic.

62

4

Golfing—Off a Boat!

Speaking of sports, did you know there are biodegradable golf balls made especially for boaters? In fact, the balls turn into fish food. Grab your golf clubs and tee up. Turn it into a game for your kids, too. Deploy a blow-up inner tube, and whoever scores a hole in one gets to pick your next boating destination.

5

Sightseeing by Sea

While traditional tourists are jamming up sidewalks and streets, you’ll have plenty of elbow room exploring your favorite cities by boat. In fact, you’ll enjoy views of skylines that are impossible to take in unless on the water.

6

Dock-and-Dine

Everything is better on a boat—and of course, that includes food. While grilling and cooking out onboard is an awesome way to spend an afternoon on board, there’s something about tying up at your favorite dockside restaurant that will get your mouth watering. You can tie up to the dock and grab a table next to the water, or order ahead for grab and go.

7

Sunrise and Sunset Cruises

Due to the uninterrupted horizon, the sunrise and sunset directly over the water simply can’t be beat. Mother Nature never disappoints morning or night. If you’re not too keen on getting up extra early, no problem. The famous green flash—a second or two of green coloring in the sky due to refracting sunlight— tends to happen more often at sunset than sunrise.
