Cassie Zampa-Keim,

What should I tell my friends and family about my dating life when they ask?

When family and friends give you the old, “So … how’s your love life going?” it’s really a personal decision about how much or little you want to say. But be prepared; there will be follow-up questions if you drop even the slightest hint of a new relationship brewing. If you’re not looking to be in the hot seat around the holiday table, say something that will end the conversation politely, such as, “I promise to tell you as soon as I have something to tell.”

My ex and I are both in town, but should we connect?

Ahhh, it’s so tempting. The lights, the mistletoe, the holiday cooking. But my answer is generally the same: leave exes where they belong, which is in the past. Unless an ex has given you some concrete reason to think that the reasons the relationship ended no longer apply and you’re interested in seeing where things lead, you should have no basis for believing anything is different.

How do I introduce my new relationship during the holidays?

My advice is that unless you plan on being with this person for the foreseeable future, and they’ve indicated the same to you, I would refrain from bringing them home to meet your Mom, Dad and dear Aunt Sally, or meeting theirs. Creating familial connections too soon can create a false sense of intimacy. It can also make it that much more difficult to go your separate ways later.

How can I keep the person I just started dating interested while traveling solo over the holidays?

First off, don’t cancel your plans just because you’re seeing someone new. It’s very important to continue living your life and being independent. That said, now that you have someone new in your life, it’s also important to keep the connection going while you’re apart. You can do that easily by talking on the phone, texting and FaceTiming regularly. Also, it’s nice to project and discuss any plans you may have or want to make when you see each other in person again.

She was not only professional but also friendly and loyal.

“This fall I came upon a listing for a home in Stinson Beach. I contacted my agent on the peninsula and she wholeheartedly recommended Jennifer and the Bowman Real Estate Group. Jennifer and I connected and despite the competitive market and multiple offers literally within a week she had us in our home! As an agent, she was exceedingly bright, professional, and knowledgeable. In her interactions with the people and institutions involved with these high-level transactions, she was not only professional but also friendly and loyal with everyone, from the listing agents to the bankers. All in all, Jennifer and her support team carried out a highly personal, quick, and successful effort getting us the house at the best deal we could. And after the purchase, she kept in daily touch with us for area advice and resources and continues to answer any questions we have. I absolutely highly recommend Bowman Real Estate Group ”

The value of our business is measured in the quality of the relationships we build.

WINTER INSPIRATION from the

THE HOLIDAYS ARE HERE. It’s the season for get-togethers with friends and family, shorter days and cooler nights, gift giving and maybe even a snowy trip to Tahoe — and here at Marin Living we love all of it.

We always like to end the year with some gorgeous pictures and inspiration, something you might return to more than a few times during leisurely winter days. To that end, we offer a photo-forward look at California coastal towns by one of our favorite photographers, Caroline Pacula. Maybe you’ve even seen her work online at Serena & Lily? Pacula has a way of capturing the dreamy spirit of the California coast in a way that is somehow both nostalgic and immediate

— check it out to see what we mean (she also recommends hotels).

And if the idea of a journey down (or up) the coast doesn’t get you off the couch, perhaps our feature on where we will be traveling in 2025 will. Travel writer Casey Hatfield-Chiotti looks at today’s more intentional travel trends and pairs them with exciting destinations that are ideal for everything from a legacy family vacation on a private Dominican Republic peninsula to “mood boarding” travel that might address deeper emotional needs in a positive way.

It’s all a fitting way to end the year, we think, and we hope you agree. Meanwhile, we’ll be sure to say hi if we see you out on the coast. Happy holidays!

HOT TO GO

San Anselmo’s Chef Ryan Scott isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

IF YOU’VE EVER STUMBLED UPON something or someplace perfect and attributed it to divine intervention, you’re not alone. Chef Ryan Scott cited the concept when discussing how he set up business on a corner near Yolanda Station in San Anselmo. The spot is where his boutique food trailer is located, and the building on the same property is the future home of the showroom for his company, Ryan Scott 2 Go Catering (www.chefryanscott.com).

“I believe in divine intervention, but I also believe in asking for stuff,” Scott says. He asked the universe for that spot, and he received; now it’s another successful piece of his empire, which includes, but is not limited to, cookbooks, his Emmy-winning television show, Food Rush and the aforementioned catering company. So how does someone who starred on Top Chef, worked closely with renowned San Francisco Chef Gary Danko and has banked hundreds

Pineapple skin tea and pink hibiscus lemonade

of appearances on TV end up gracing the town of San Anselmo with his food trailer? Like many others, he settled here because he was looking for good schools for his young daughters. And the charm of Marin didn’t hurt, either: “I feel like Marin stops for a minute, and it makes us realize how blessed and lucky we are to be here.”

The Ryan Scott 2 Go Boutique Trailer Cafe opened in the summer of 2024, but it’s already amassed a huge following, gathering long lines of hungry customers looking to get goods like melt-in-your-mouth pastries and breakfast sandwiches on homemade bread. The establishment also serves drinks, like coffee from San Francisco’s Andytown. But that’s not the only familiar name Scott works with: the eggs and butter are supplied by Clover Sonoma, the Central Valley’s Fiscalini provides cheese and local spots

like Draper Farms and Golden Gate Meat Company also add items that appear on the menu. It’s fresh California cuisine on the go, and the reason it might be so popular is because Scott and his team love what they do, and like Chef says, “You can taste it when people don’t enjoy cooking.” Not the case here.

While he’s more than happy to feed people, Scott still encourages spending time in the kitchen yourself, urging people to keep things simple and just make food they like. Perhaps that’s why he’s already published two cookbooks, the most recent being The No-Fuss Family Cookbook: Simple Recipes for Everyday Life, and is currently working on a third, this one dedicated to baking. But he doesn’t limit his lessons to print; shows like Rachael Ray Show, Good Morning America, Today Show and Bar Rescue are just a few places where he’s been known to share recipes and stories. And he’s a big believer in food as a catalyst for sparking memories. But he’s looking to make memories, too, particularly here in Marin.

“The goal is to keep the trailer here for as long as we possibly can,” he says. “When my daughters graduate high school, I want to still be there. I want it to be a staple.”

The trailer has limited operating hours, but Scott says this is on purpose, both due to his busy schedule and for the wellbeing of his staff. “The number one thing to me is my staff taking care of themselves,” he says. “So never be bummed if we’re closed.” He promises it’s worth the wait.

MUSIC ON THE RIDGE

A Marinite brings worldclass musicians to her Inverness home and loves to share the experience with other music aficionados.

WHEN CAMILLE LEBLANC needed to get a nine-foot Steinway into her second home in the hills of Inverness Ridge after moving there in 2012, she solicited the help of her piano coach, who noticed something about the new space immediately.

“You realize you have a concert hall here,” he told her. “I told him I did,” says LeBlanc, a serial entrepreneur turned concert promoter. The Inverness house, designed by well-known Sea Ranch architect William Turnbull Jr. in the late ’80s, boasted 35-foot ceilings and a great room clad in redwood — perfect for intimate concerts.

But before LeBlanc started Music and Minds (formerly called Every Blue Moon Concerts; www.musicandminds.org)

Ian Maksin (playing this month) has created his own unique style by blending elements of different genres from around the globe.

in Inverness, she experimented with the idea of a monthly music salon in her Berkeley Hills home, where she would host as many as 10 professional pianists from the conservatory at a time. These sessions would continue into the early morning and soon caught the attention of neighbors. “People would drive up the hill and ask me where that music came from and if they could get on ‘the list,’ ” she says. “And that was that.”

Moving the concept to Inverness was an obvious choice and she soon began to attract audiences eager to hear

Ashot Gevorgyan

world-class musicians in jazz, classical, experimental, world music, improv and more. “I go out to hear live music but all I could hear in Marin was bluegrass, country or Americana. I love those genres, but it is everywhere out here,” she says. “For my concerts, I am quite specific about tending toward genres that you otherwise just wouldn’t get access to out here.”

Shows include musicians like Sabir Khan, an Indian sarangi player who fills stadiums in his home country; Ian Maksin, who sings music in 37 languages (December 28); and the Abeo String Quartet, who performed at the Kennedy Center earlier this year (December 7 and 8); even Oakland’s T Sisters have played the venue. “It’s the rare opportunity to hear people who you normally would not hear in this region, and who are critically acclaimed or are about to take off career-wise because of their musical abilities,” she says. And now fireside chat speakers on various topics are also presented (November’s chat saw former EU ambassador Andrew Standley discuss the U.S. presidential election).

LeBlanc admits there is also a personal reason to do the series. “I have world-class musicians in my living room and I don’t have to jump on the road to drive into San Francisco and then drive back,” she says, adding that the key to producing Music and Minds is to keep it fun and easy. “I promised myself I would do this series if I could be out on the land until 3 or 4 p.m., come back to the house, open up the doors, let the musicians load in, do the sound check and then let 60 people in. I’ve got it dialed in, and people really appreciate the shows.”

As for how she draws musicians who sometimes play Carnegie Hall to a ridge in Inverness, LeBlanc says it’s all about the curation and like attracting like. “Any musician who I would have would listen to any of the other musicians in terms of the genre; they would recognize that these are deep musicians,” she says. The best part is that the performers really enjoy the smaller audiences and the space. “I’m matching the caliber.”

The William Turnbull Jr.–designed home is ideal for intimate concerts in Inverness.

A NOT-SO-TANGLED WEB

The story of Bolt Threads starts with a box full of spiders.

BOLT THREADS co-founder and CEO Dan Widmaier lived in a studio apartment in San Francisco — him, his girlfriend and the spiders. “My girlfriend — now wife — was not very happy about that,” says Widmaier.

But it wasn’t the spiders Widmaier was fascinated with; it was their webs. “Spider silk is one of the best-known examples of a biology-made material that is incredible by all standards,” Widmaier argues, explaining that he grew passionate about biomaterials while at grad school at UCSF, where he met Bolt Threads co-founder and CTO David Breslauer, who was working on his Ph.D. at UC Berkeley.

“It went from an interest to an obsession,” says Widmaier. “By the time we had finished our Ph.D.s, we thought there was a pressing need for this to solve the future of society, and humanity, in the form of a business product.”

Biomaterials are an antidote to synthetics. The idea behind Bolt Threads (www.boltthreads.com) is to take material found in nature (i.e., spider silk or mushrooms) and utilize it or the biological concepts behind it in products in place of synthetics that are harmful to human bodies or the planet. Goods made from the earth that biodegrade back into our planet — without compromising on quality or capability.

“Humanity is putting immense pressure on our planet. Through the changing climate and degradation of the environment, we need to come up with ways to support the future of humanity, our resources, and how we use them wisely,” says Widmaier. “The solutions we’ve come up with in the past just aren’t going to work, and we can’t continue to do more of the same. We thought biomaterials were an elegant solution to that.”

Bolt Threads b-silk is a bio-based and vegan polypeptide that replaces

silicone elastomers in beauty and personal care products. Its composition is inspired by spider silk but made up of bioengineered yeast (no more boxes of spiders lying around). B-silk is already in products you might have in your bathroom now, like Vegamour shampoo & conditioner and Kelly Slater’s Freaks of Nature sunscreen.

The success of b-silk is huge for Bolt Threads (the company went public earlier this year) and is just the beginning for the company. “The hope is that we can develop a new platform of technology to make sustainable and environmentally friendly versions of technologies,” says Widmaier. “They might not be exactly the same, but they propel the same functions. Maybe we can get all the benefits to humanity without all the negatives.”

Bolt Threads has a lot more to offer, with 64 granted patents and 170 pending patent applications up its sleeve.

“Humanity has big problems in our future,” says Widmaier. “We think that sustainability and protecting our natural resources and the environment to work with humanity — not against each other — is going to be a megatrend for 50 to 100 years. Until we solve the problem or extinct ourselves.” For all of our sakes, let’s hope Bolt Threads can help avoid the latter.

2025 WHERE TO TRAVEL IN

Toss the to-do list and embrace a more meaningful travel experience.

AS A TRAVEL WRITER

and editor, I’m fascinated by why and where people travel. Over the last few years, there has been a significant shift. Travelers are focusing less on trip to-do lists and more on how they feel during travel. As a result, we are more thoughtful than ever in booking trips, looking for experiences focused on connections, curiosity, joy and awe. Here are five major 2025 travel trends, from luxury legacy trips to mood boarding, plus where to go to experience the feeling of wonder only travel can spark.

THE TREND: Legacy Family Vacations

As Gen Z begins having children, the industry may see seven generations traveling simultaneously in 2025. Legacy travel, which brings all these age groups together to celebrate and reconnect, is becoming more popular.

The Dominican Republic, a diverse Caribbean country just two hours from Miami, offers the exclusive-use experiences legacy travelers are requesting. Located on its own north coast private peninsula, ÀNI Dominican Republic (from $16,000 per night for six suites) accommodates up to 28 guests with a team of over 30 staff creating the most luxurious and private vacations for groups of family and friends. A stay includes complimentary babysitting, children’s activities like kite making and face painting, spa treatments and beach butler service.

The St. Regis Cap Cana Resort (from $699 per night; www.marriott.com) debuts in 2025 with more than 200 luxurious rooms, including family-friendly suites and swim-out options, multiple restaurants and a sophisticated spa. Eden Roc Cap Cana (from $850 per night; www.edenroccapcana. com), where family-friendly programming includes private pizza-making classes, has unveiled new villas this year, including a serene six-bedroom sanctuary with private access to two natural cenotes.

ÀNI Dominican Republic offers a private peninsula for up to 28 guests.

THE TREND : Mood Boarding

Travelers are increasingly interested in more intentional travel to address deeper emotional needs, known as “mood boarding.” Intoxicating Marrakech, Morocco, is a soul-satisfying backdrop for a trip with friends, significant others or solo. El Fenn (from $436 per night; www.el-fenn.com), the creative sanctuary at the edge of the city’s bustling medina, has announced retreats in honor of its 20th anniversary, including Discover Color With Sophie Robinson, December 3 to 6, 2024, and January 24 to 27, 2025, geared toward design lovers. The British interiors expert and podcast host will introduce guests to Marrakech artisans and makers and share her “black book” for finding everything from vintage

furniture to tiles, textiles to lighting. Participants will also meet with the creative team behind El Fenn to learn how they created the hotel’s vibrant aesthetic.

New hotels include Park Hyatt Marrakech (from $391 per night; www.hyatt.com) and Rosemary (from $274 per night; www.rosemarymarrakech.com), a pastel-hued riad restored

by a Belgian artist. United has announced new direct flights beginning this fall from New York, making it easier than ever to reach the “Red City.” While visiting the YSL Museum or taking a class at Royal Mansour Marrakech's (from $1,525 per night; www.royalmansour.com) new cooking school surrounded by palace-like gardens, visitors will feel transported and inspired.

These design-forward rooms invite guests to discover color at El Fenn in Marrakech, Morocco

THE TREND : Destination Dupes

Destination dupes are places that are just as trip-worthy as their tried-and-true doppelgängers but offer more economical pricing and fewer crowds. Travelers looking for an alternative to Paris with top-notch dining and repurposed palace hotels should try Vienna.

Next year marks the 200th anniversary of famed Viennese composer Johann Strauss II’s birth, and the city is

planning a yearlong celebration with concerts and special exhibitions. Vienna’s restaurant scene includes everything from Japanese-Austrian fusion to three Michelin-starred temples of gastronomy. In January, Michelin will publish a new country edition for Austria, including Vienna.

The new Almanac Palais Vienna (from $492 per night; www.almanachotels.com), set in a pair of 19th-century

former palaces overlooking verdant Stadtpark, has introduced an all-Austrian art collection and exclusive experiences for art lovers. Works by Hermann Nitsch and Gustav Klimt — the first time a Klimt has ever been displayed at a hotel — are on view. All Almanac guests receive complimentary admission to the Belvedere Museums and Palaces Belvedere 21 contemporary art

museum. In more hotel news, the hip Hoxton Vienna (from $130 per night; www.thehoxton.com) opened in a midcentury modern building this spring, and Mandarin Oriental will bring its fine service to Vienna’s First District in 2025. December is a festive time to visit Vienna, a time when Christmas markets sell arts, crafts and gingerbread-like cookies and ball season is in swing.

The Hoxton Vienna opened in a classic midcentury modern space.

THE TREND : The Coolcation

Opposite George Apostolidis; this page: Destination Campbell River

Travel to cooler climates is on the rise as people look for destinations with moderate temperatures. British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, where highs are around 70°F in the summer, checks all the boxes for travelers looking for natural beauty and wild luxury.

Secluded Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge (from $2,180 per night; www. clayoquotwildernesslodge. com), open from May to September, can be reached only by seaplane or boat. The UNESCO-listed Clayoquot Sound Biosphere surrounds the property’s 25 white canvas tents. The lodge offers such a high level of service that it became one of 10 North American hotels to be awarded three Michelin keys in September.

On the rocky shores of the Tofino Inlet, Tofino Resort + Marina (from $189 per night; www.tofino resortandmarina.com) facilitates a connection to nature with a new remote kayaking experience and a wood-fired floating sauna 25 minutes from the resort by boat. The new Moon Jelly Bathhouse (www. moonjellyspa.ca) is an even more immersive floating spa experience where guests can swim with the harmless moon jellyfish often found in the Clayoquot Sound waters before warming up in saltwater seaweed hot tubs.

A new addition to the island’s more protected east coast, Naturally Pacific Resort (from $189 per night; www.naturallypacific.ca) offers comfortable coastal-inspired guest rooms, a spa, a golf course and wildlife excursions to see grizzly bears and whales.

THE TREND : The Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip

The opulent white marble Raffles Jaipur
Courtesy of Raffles Hotels & Resorts

According to experts, requests for high-end travel to exotic destinations are spiking. A string of luxury hotel openings, a new expressway and rebounding tiger populations are making Jaipur more appealing than ever in 2025.

The white marble Raffles Jaipur (from $600 per night; www. raffles.com), which opened in July, is a fitting addition to a city known for its opulent city palace complex. The classic meets contemporary Anantara Jewel Bagh Jaipur (www.anantara.com) is set to open in early 2025. An hour’s drive from Jaipur in the Aravalli Mountains, the intimate Anopura Hotel (from $309 per night; www.anopura.com) has expanded this year with seven new suites, a new yoga deck and an Ayurvedic spa on a fiveacre farm.

Ranthambore National Park, once the hunting grounds of Jaipur’s maharajas, has seen a 25 percent increase in its tiger population in recent years thanks to conservation efforts. The government is planning to extend the Ranthambore tiger corridor to give these majestic cats more room to roam. Expeditions to view tigers in the park can be arranged through expert outfitters like Micato Safaris (www. micato.com), which also facilitates transportation and luxury accommodations for clients.

ON THE OCEAN’S EDGE

A dreamy journey though California’s small coastal towns.

CARMEL/BIG SUR

A stay in Carmel and Big Sur was the ideal spot from which to explore every scenic pullout along Highway 1, camera in hand of course. Each stop revealed something unique, from the graceful arch of Bixby Creek Bridge to the captivating hues of feathery pampas grass. At Point Lobos State Park, I wandered windswept trails, smelling the ocean mist and observing diverse wildlife including whales close to shore and hundreds of brown pelicans. McWay Falls, a breathtaking waterfall that flows year-round, is protected by a cove that catches the light and transforms at sunset. My stay at Highlands Inn (www.hyatt.com ) , perched high above the coastline, offered a truly immersive experience to cap off the trip.

Photos and Words by CAROLINE PACULA

JENNER

On the rugged Sonoma County coast, Jenner, named after Elijah K. Jenner, who invented a pump that was useful for gold mining operations, offers breathtaking views along the cliffside road. From these heights, you can see where the Russian River blends with the ocean and blankets of pampas grass sway alongside the highway. I stayed overnight at the Timber Cove Resort (www.timbercoveresort. com), where towering redwoods and cypress trees blend seamlessly into the dramatic bluffs, all in view from my private deck. I ended my evening watching the sunset, seated by the fire in an Adirondack chair, glass of wine in hand.

BODEGA BAY

Bodega Bay, forever etched in cinematic history by Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds , is a quaint fishing town that today stirs nostalgic childhood memories of exploring tide pools and heading home with bags of saltwater taffy, a local specialty. Spending just one night at The Lodge at Bodega Bay (www.lodgeatbodegabay.com), with its breathtaking coastal views, felt like stepping into another world. Just a short stroll away, a meandering pathway led to Pinnacle Beach. A 15-minute drive away, Bodega Bay Trailhead awaited in the nearby state park. Known for its dramatic rock formations — sculpted by the San Andreas Fault — the area is a photographer’s dream, with vibrant red and green ice plants creating a stunning foreground against the rugged landscape.

MORRO BAY

Morro Bay, a picturesque coastal town, offers an enchanting blend of natural beauty and charm. Its iconic landmark, Morro Rock, towers 576 feet above the sea, having stood in the same spot for 23 million years. The main town centers around the Embarcadero harbor. Our morning at the Inn at Rose’s Landing (www.innatroseslanding.com) began with coffee in hand while we read and listened to the playful barks of sea lions and otters across the water. A short drive beyond the harbor led us to the dunes, where we wandered barefoot on the powdery sand. As the sun pierced through the dunes it cast long shadows and golden hues, creating the perfect moments to capture through my lens.

PISMO BEACH

Pismo Beach is a great family stop with its expansive beach views, powerful waves and surfers near the iconic Pismo Pier, one of the longest in California. My two boys couldn’t contain their excitement as we reached the Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve State Park. With our four-wheel-drive vehicle ready for action, the adventures began as we charged along the beach, the tires spinning through powdery sand. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the dunes came alive with shadows and shifting patterns. For those wanting to stay close to the action, the Vespera Resort (www.marriott.com) offers the ideal spot — just steps from the pier and waterfront restaurants.

STINSON BEACH

Stinson Beach, known for its expansive white sandy beach and vibrant surf culture, offers one of Marin’s quintessential beach experiences. If you’re a surfer, you may already know of the Live Water Surf Shop and its iconic “No Shark” logo, a symbol that’s recognized far beyond Marin County. Having grown up in Marin, I’ve made countless trips here. Just steps away, the Bolinas Lagoon offers easy kayaking and paddleboarding. Part of the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, the lagoon’s trough was formed by the San Andreas Fault, with a sandbar connecting Stinson Beach to Bolinas at its mouth. Whether it's the sunsets, the surf or simply the feeling of being there, Stinson Beach never loses its charm.

Caroline Pacula is a fine art photographer based in Marin County. She’s known for her dreamlike photographs that capture misty coastlines, open fields and beaches around the world, from Capri and Positano to the coasts of Northern and Southern California. In addition to in her online shop (www. carolinepaculaprints.com), exclusive photographs can be found online at Serena & Lily (www.serenaandlily. com) and Pure Salt (www. puresaltinteriors.com).

YOUR MOVE

Visting Japan’s “second cities”; the Aston Martin DBX707 is not your father’s SUV; and a local student brings chess to the masses.

Hokan-ji Temple graces the skyline in Kyoto.

A FAMILIAR FACE

The North Bay hills and curves are no match for the Aston Martin DBX707 .

IT WAS A LATE summer morning in Sonoma Valley, and the air was still crisp from the evening’s fog. I was in something approaching a state of bliss, a consequence of a delectable night’s sleep at Hotel Healdsburg, when, stepping into its secluded courtyard, I stopped still at the sight of an unforgettable face.

In a flash, I was transported to the French Riviera, where I’d last marveled at that great, voracious mouth and those menacingly seduc -

tive eyes in the visage of an Aston Martin DB12, a 202-mile-per-hour super-tourer designed to devour endless stretches of autobahns and autostradas in great, effortless gulps. And yet here again were those same unmistakable features, only this time in the prow of what is surely the sexiest SUV ever built, the Aston Martin DBX707.

The DBX707 has four doors, generous room for five passengers, and an enormous trunk, yet from

nose to tail, every inch of its sleek silhouette channels the mystique of Aston Martin’s rakishly low-slung coupes. How, exactly, did the design team at Aston Martin HQ achieve such a thing? By starting from an entirely new bespoke platform that allowed complete control of every proportion and stylistic detail of the

The interior, meanwhile, is a seamless fusion of ultra-luxury SUV comfort and supercar seriousness. Buckling myself into the 16-way Sport driver’s seat, I find myself ooh-ing at the sunny pastel of the cabin’s Californian Poppy leather and aah-ing at the tactility of the analog buttons and switches that — for those who prefer physical things to touch screens — quickly and intuitively activate the DBX707’s key mechanical operations, from gear selection and drive mode to suspension.

With the press of a delightfully burly ENGINE START button, the

4-liter Aston Martin–developed AMG V8 jumps to life with a rasp and a rumble, the digital instrument cluster snapping on, vivid and ultra-crisp. There’s 697 horsepower under the hood, and a mind-bending 664 pound-feet of torque, enough to catapult the DBX707 from zero to 60 in 3.1 seconds on its way to a 193-mph maximum velocity, but feathering the supercar of SUVs through the town center is an absolute breeze. Is it simply that the gas pedal is so wonderfully finessable, or is it the influence of a more mystical property whereby awestruck drivers of more anodyne vehicles tend to give an Aston Martin a wider berth?

I’d ponder the question more deeply were I not so engrossed in

DESTINATION JAPAN

Discover sacred Shinto shrines and dine on street food favorites in Kyoto and Osaka.

THE APPEAL OF JAPAN as a travel destination continues to soar, and connected by a 15-minute Shinkansen bullet train ride, two of its most sensational must-see “second cities” offer distinctly different experiences than megalopolitan capital Tokyo. With its ornate Buddhist temples and meditative Zen gardens, Kyoto provides a heart-and-soul snapshot of Old Japan, while port city Osaka stands out for its street food scene and neon-lit nightlife.

From a sake brewery tour and pottery workshop to a relaxing ofuro bath ritual in a skyscraping spa — here are some of the best things to see and do when planning a trip.

KYOTO: The Ancient Former Capital

Winding streets and traditional wooden teahouses make Kyoto’s historic Higashiyama district an enchanting place to visit, and the Park Hyatt Kyoto (from $1,325 per night; www.hyatt.com) is an exceptional place to stay. Ryokan-inspired guest rooms are seamlessly arranged into the hillside, offering views of the temple-like garden, city and Yasaka Pagoda below the latter, which also serves as a striking backdrop to the hotel’s French-Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, Yasaka.

The historic Kiyomizu-dera Temple overlooks Kyoto.

Guests can also access exclusive cultural experiences, including a behind-the-scenes visit to Kiyomizu-dera (www.kiyomizudera.or.jp), one of the most celebrated temples in Japan. Numerous heritage sites are on your doorstep, but Shinto shrine Fushimi-Inari-Taisha (famed for its noble fox guardians and orange torii gates), Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and the Ryoan-ji temple rock garden are essential stops across the city.

South of town, Kyoto’s Fushimi district is renowned across Japan for brewing fine sake —

should an in-depth tour and tasting appeal, go with local experts from the Kyoto Insider Sake Experience (www.kyotosakeexperience.com). A center for Japanese arts and crafts for centuries, Kyoto is also a shopper’s paradise; explore old and new with a kintsugi workshop (the art of repairing broken pottery) at beautifully curated lifestyle store POJ Studio (www.pojstudio.com) or discover your favorite scent at the almost 200-year-old incense purveyor, Hayashi Ryushodo (www. hayashi-ryushodo.com).

Osaka is often called ‘ the nation’s kitchen ,’ and for good reason. Food culture is massive here.”

OSAKA: The Buzzing Modern Metropolis

Osaka is often called “the nation’s kitchen,” and for good reason. Food culture is massive here, most notably in exuberant dining and nightlife district Dōtonbori, a futuristic cityscape best explored after dark where street food stalls and beloved restaurants, including Ajinoya Honten (ajinoya-okonomiyaki.com) and Takoyaki Dōraku Wanaka (www.takoyaki-wanaka.com), serve signature dishes like okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) and takoyaki (grilled octopus balls) respectively.

Osaka Castle played a major role in 16th-century Japanese history.

But first, hop on a Tombori River Cruise along the Dōtonbori Canal to get your bearings and snap a photo beside the famous Glico Running Man sign. Another must-visit is cultural landmark Osaka Castle, which dates to 1583 but has since been reconstructed several times and can be enjoyed equally well from the surrounding (and free to enter) park.

Nearby, the Four Seasons Hotel Osaka (from $700 per night; www.fourseasons.com/osaka) is one of the city’s most refined and buzzed-about new additions. Rooms across its soaring 49-story, sailshaped tower skew ultra-modern, but welcome tea rituals and tatami suites feature a hotel-within-ahotel modern ryokan concept on the special Gensui floor. Admire cinematic skyline views over cocktails

at glamorous Bar Bota on the 37th floor, and if you only have time for one spa treatment, make it the ofuro bath ritual, a well-being tradition deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

HENRY LIEN

started playing chess at a young age; he estimates about first grade or so. The Strawberry native liked it enough to start playing competitively, but perhaps his biggest achievement was deciding to share his love of the game by finding a way to make it more accessible. So in 2018, when it was time to decide on a bar mitzvah project, an undertaking where Jewish youths come up with communityoriented initiatives, he began teaching chess classes in San Rafael.

“I thought I’d like to create something that wasn’t previously there and chess was my area of expertise,” says Lien, currently a freshman at Stanford. That project, now known as ChessPals (www. chesspals.org), a nonprofit that offers free chess classes to elementary school students who lack access to chess programs, is still going strong today.

It’s no simple task for people so young to set up their own organization, but Lien had plenty of support, from his parents to local chess teacher Lanette Gordon. Grants have helped fund the program, but ChessPals will occasionally charge a small fee for some classes. “Chess programs are super expensive,” he says. “Usually they run about $400 to $600, but sometimes we’ll take about $20, if we take a fee at all. But that’s just to order chess boards, pay for subscriptions, things like that.”

ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

What started as a Marin youth’s bar mitzvah project has expanded across the country.

ChessPals students have the opportunity to subscribe to the ChessKid website where they can practice and connect with other players online, while face-to-face gameplay comes through summer camps and after-school programs provided in different school districts throughout Marin. And one of the unique aspects of ChessPals is that all the teachers are students — primarily high schoolers, but some middle schoolers, too. Lien says

this is helpful because it contributes to the mentorship dynamic he strives to create. “It’s not as though it’s a detached dynamic with someone a lot older. It’s someone who’s a bit older than you, who’s experienced, and you can look to them for mentorship and advice, too.”

ChessPals has since expanded to Davis and Berkeley, but there’s a goal to eventually see it in all 50 states. It’s on its way; the organization is setting up chapters in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wyoming. This is the product of mutual outreach, Lien says, noting that while they’ll reach out to chess clubs about starting their own chapter of ChessPals, sometimes it’s the other way around. All it takes to get it started and keep it going are motivated students.

And it’s not just school kids who are getting lessons; ChessPals recently partnered with Vivalon in San Rafael to run classes for seniors. “It’s a great opportunity to keep mental acuity for seniors, but it’s also very intergenerational, which I think is really cool,” Lien says.

While the game of chess is plenty of fun, it also offers a bevy of benefits. “It’s amazing for cognitive ability and problem solving, and it’s directly related with analytical skills,” says Lien, who was recently named a finalist for the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes for this endeavor. “But it also teaches you to be OK with your losses. When you lose at chess, it’s your fault — you can’t blame the piece for moving on its own. So, you learn to take accountability and take agency for what you’re doing.”
