I will be able to:
• Talk about vacation planning. • Express wishes using the unreal past structure.
Word Bank: Traveler Travel Agent Travel Agency Vacation Package Brochure Promotion Trip Island Getaway Honeymoon
Asap (As soon as possible) Yearly Remote Tropical Enchanting All Inclusive (To) plan (To) book (To) travel (To) go away
By Plane On Vacation Peak Season
(To) set foot (To) take a break (To) take time off
Grammar note: Unreal past - Making wishes: The ‘Past Simple’ can be used when referring to the present or future and not the past itself. This is called ‘Unreal Past’ and it can be used after the following words in the boxes below: Wish / If only
Would rather (with two subjects) It’s time
*(Wish / If only + Past Simple) is used to talk about things we would like to be different in the present. Example: I wish I were rich. or If only I were rich. - The present situation is that the speaker is not rich. *(Would rather + Past Simple) is used to talk about a course of action we would prefer someone else to take. Example: I would rather you didn’t call out in class. - The present situation is that the first subject ( I ) prefers for the second subject (you) not to call out in class. *(It’s time + Past Simple) is used to talk about something that has to be done now or in the near future by oneself or someone else.
4
Example: It’s time you started studying for your English test. - The present situation is that the subject (you) hasn’t started to study and the speaker tells the subject that now is the appropriate time to start studying. • I wish I were more fluent in English. • If only I had more time to study. • I’d rather you asked questions to clear up any doubts you have. • It’s time you paid more attention to detail.

I wish we were on a tropical island in the Caribbean. I wish there were more promotions on honeymoon getaways. If only we could take some time off from work and go on an all inclusive vacation. If only travel agencies offered cheaper vacation packages during peak season. I’d rather you showed us your vacation brochure. I’d rather we went away by plane. It’s time we had a nice family trip together. It’s time we took a break and went on vacation. We asked the travel agent to show us a vacation brochure. He told us to take our time looking through it. I asked him if there were any promotions on honeymoon getaways. I told him that we wanted to book an all inclusive trip for two to an enchanting island. He said that the travel agency had had promotions on honeymoon getaways the month before. 14. He wanted to know when we planned on traveling. 15. We told him that we wanted to set foot on a tropical beach asap. 16. He wondered if we had ever been on a remote island before.
Reading Comprehension: “Planning on Going Away” We can all picture ourselves somewhere far away on the perfect getaway taking a break from it all. Perhaps sipping piña coladas on a tropical beach or an enchanting island celebrating our honeymoon with our better half. Nowadays all inclusive vacation packages are very popular amongst travelers looking to take some time off and get their money’s worth. But the truth is that travel agencies aren’t offering many promotions during peak season. So, if you’re planning on going away and traveling anytime soon, you should book your vacation with anticipation to get the best deal possible. Maybe it’s time you took that trip and went on vacation. Why not talk to your travel agent and ask to see a travel brochure asap. The sooner you do it, the faster you’ll be setting foot on that dream vacation you’ve always wanted to go on. According to the text, are the statements True (T) or False (F)? 1. One can find lots of good deals all year round on traveling. ( ) 2. It’s better to plan and reserve one’s vacation ahead of time. ( ) 3. These days more and more people are going away on vacation with everything included. ( ) What words or expression from the text mean...? All departure flights are being delayed due to the dangerous weather conditions. Passengers of flight 5239 are being redirected to gate 10. The runway is being cleared for take off. The flight is now being boarded by the passengers. The departure lounge was being used by the passengers while they waited patiently. First class was being served refreshments. Travelers with a web check-in were being attended on an express line. The carry-on compartments were being shut by the stewardesses. We’ve just found out that our flight has been delayed. We haven’t been able to check in yet. The arrivals terminal hasn’t opened its baggage claim yet. The airline has upgraded our seats to first class to compensate us for the inconvenience. We had always traveled coach class. The airport hadn’t had so many cancelled flights in one day before. That is the stewardess who served us our beverages. The flight attendant, who was a young man, helped me with my carry-on bag.
Reading Comprehension: “Stuck at an Airport” It’s likely true that at some point we’ve all had to experience some kind of inconvenience at an airport as travelers. Perhaps you might’ve had to wait on a long and annoying line to check into your flight or for some reason your belongings may have not been at the baggage claim and were lost in the course of your travel. This can almost be expected nowadays since flying is the fastest and safest way of traveling and airlines have a high number of arrivals and departures scheduled every single day. Travelers in many cases have even had to sleep at gate lounges waiting patiently for the airline to book them on the next available flight. In most cases bad weather will be the cause for an airport to have several delayed or perhaps cancelled flights. Whatever the case may be it always ends up being worth the while when your destination is a nice tropical beach somewhere in the Caribbean. Whether on vacation or maybe away on your honeymoon, any trouble you might run into at the airport can turn out to be completely irrelevant. Answer the questions according to the text. 1. Why are flights usually delayed or cancelled? __________________________________________________________________ 2. What should a traveler prepare him/herself for at an airport? ___________________________________________________ 3. Why would anyone have to spend the night at an airport? ______________________________________________________ What words or expression from the text mean...? We should have booked the honeymoon suite. I should have ordered room service for us. You should’ve tipped the bellboy. They should’ve arranged an airport shuttle. We should’ve requested a wake-up call. I should’ve had housekeeping tidy up our room. We should’ve stopped by the snack bar and grabbed a bite to eat. You should’ve kept your wristband on. This resort has a lot more amenities than any other we’ve been to. It is much more luxurious than the last one we stayed at. Its accommodations are far more fancy. It has many more hotel guests. Even though we slept in, we still made it in time to enjoy the complimentary breakfast. Despite hanging around the poolside all day, we stopped by the beach for a swim. I tried to arrange the honeymoon suite for us, nevertheless it was already booked. The room service was pretty good, on the other hand the all you can eat continental buffet was excellent.
Reading Comprehension: “An All Inclusive Vacation” All inclusive resorts and hotels in the Caribbean are top notch facilities that lots of visitors return to year after year. People return for many different reasons. For some it’s the constant beach weather, for others it’s the fine white sand, but most visitors you talk to will agree that it’s because of the friendly people and welcoming attitude of the hotel staff. While staying at an all inclusive hotel you will benefit from the many extra amenities and accommodations you can get at these amazing getaway spots. Many guests say that by staying at an all inclusive hotel they save money on their vacation. This is partly because tips and gratuities are included in the rate as well as the price of activities and entertainment. At an all-inclusive resort you don’t have to budget, you just have to have fun. Another benefit to staying at one of the all inclusive resorts is that guests can enjoy the convenience of having everything they need right at their fingertips. Guests don’t need to worry about transportation to and from the airport. Servers and bartenders are happy to accommodate your every need. If you forget something at home, chances are the resort you are staying at will be able to provide you with what you need. According to the text, are the statements True (T) or False (F)? 1. The majority of travelers say they would re-visit a particular all inclusive resort because of the service and treatment they get from everyone there.
( )
2. Visitors can save on their vacation’s cost by booking their stay at an all inclusive resort.

Getting ready to set off, we took some last minute pictures together at the port. Boarding the cruise, I remembered that the ship had a flowrider aboard. Cruising the Caribbean, we watched the wake from the back of the ship. Feeling seasick, I decided to go lay down for a while. Docking the ship, the captain gave the order to prepare the gangway for the passengers to disembark. Embarking the ship, Our family waved us goodbye from the dock. I’d rather we met back on the main deck. If only the cruise were already underway. I wish I could cruise around the world. It’s time we got underway. You should’ve booked your cruise during the shoulder season. We should’ve arranged to stay in an oceanview cabin. You should’ve asked one of the cabin stewardesses if we could upgrade our cabin. We should’ve gone ashore when we had the chance. The ship is being cast off to get underway. Some of the crew members were being called to the bridge by the ship’s master.
Reading Comprehension: “Cruising the Caribbean” It’s easy to find reasons why more people take cruises to the Caribbean than anywhere else in the world. A warm climate, an astounding array of tropical white sand beaches and incredibly crystal clear seas teeming with marine life make this part of the world a perfect cruise vacation destination. There’s much more to this region stretching from South Florida to South America than sun, sand and surf. No other destination presents so many choices of cruise itineraries and lengths, with anything from a two-night getaway to an extended voyage sailing from ports from New York to Central America. In fact, it is so vast and diverse that it really constitutes three separate areas, traditionally defined as Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean. A typical week long cruise allows vacationers to sample these varied cultures, history and people at four or five different ports. Each port opens the door to a new slice of paradise, where you might discover traces of France, Britain, the Netherlands or Spain woven into the distinctive pace and style of the region’s many individual nations. The guided tour was such an unforgettable experience that we chose to do it a second time. The tour guide was such a great help that we decided to tip him well. The sights were so breathtaking that we ended up taking dozens of snapshots. Some of the sights are so historic that they’ve been officially named landmarks. We had such a great time sightseeing the different landscapes that we were all eager to explore some more. There were so many attractions that we didn’t have time to experience them all. The wildlife national park is so big that the excursion lasted for more than three hours. The double decker tour bus was so spacious that it fitted more than a hundred passengers. As soon as we arrived, the tour guide pointed out that the site was considered a natural wonder. By the time I was able to pinpoint our location on the map we had already gotten lost. During the excursion, we were guided to several historic sights. When we were on the tour bus ride, I took some great snapshots. While the tour guide was pointing out the landmark’s historic facts, I was taking snapshots. The tour bus didn’t take off until every single passenger was back on board. After the sightseeing tour was over, we went back to the hotel and grabbed a bite to eat at the snackbar. We took a break and afterwards we went to hang around the poolside for a while.

I wish we had known about this resort a lot earlier. We’ve had a whale of a time here. I wish we had camped out on the beach while we were there. Next time we’ll bring a tent with us. I wish we had done the web check-in before leaving to the airport. I wish we hadn’t had to head back home on the red eye flight. He wishes he had taken sunscreen with him to the beach and not gotten sunburned. I wish I had packed a lot less for the trip. If only we didn’t have to check out so early. It’s time we returned to school and work. I wish our vacation didn’t have to come to an end. If only we could turn back the hands of time and live this memorable vacation once more. The vacationers had a splendid time at the all inclusive resort and a hell of a vacation overall. We will be waiting in the hotel lobby for our transport to the airport. We’ll be coming back next year because we had a wonderful experience as first timers. The control tower delayed our flight so we’re going to have to take the red eye flight back home.
Reading Comprehension: “Time Flies” Time flies when you’re having fun is a saying that most people would consider to be true. For example, Have you ever waited in line or sat through a boring meeting and time seemed to be barely moving? Or what about when you’re having so much fun that you seem to lose sense of time altogether? When people are experiencing positive emotions or states, they feel like time is passing faster than when they experience negative feelings. So, it would seem likely for our vacations and getaways to fly by and end quickly because we’re probably having a whale of a time. We all wish we could stay a few more days, do things all over again or just turn back the hands of time completely. It’s all very natural to feel this way. We can almost expect our trip and time away to come to an end swiftly. According to the text, are the statements True (T) or False (F)? 1. Time seems to pass by very slowly when we are having a blast. 2. Lots of people would agree that time flies by when you’re having fun. 3. One can expect their vacation to finish quickly because they’re not having a good time.
