architectural design university building | pavia, it 2008 the analysis of the urban context acknowledges a distortion of the roman urban fabric happening in correspondence to the project area. the design enhances this suspension, turning it into a public fracture, a morphological buffer able to insert a new seam within the urban fabric.

architectural design urban re-design of ex-armoury | pavia, 2009 the project addresses the theme of building within the built environment, giving meaning to an area suspended between urban, suburban and rural. defining a general morphology based on environmental fluctuations and architectural presences, the area aims at becoming a text within the city, a viral insertion intensifying the urban experience. the character of the area. They are regarded as part of a geometrical pattern expanding throughout the area and defining new dispositions. The infrastructural system, especially the railway, establishes a series of tensions, force lines and disturbing axes. The existing natural landscape, consisting in the water system of Ticino and Navigliaccio and on-site vegetation, provides a topographical deformation: floodable soils and marshes participate in the specificity of the site and those situations eventually states the need for a variable relationship with the natural soil. The superimposition of the defined layers causes instability and creates a configuration of enabled fields, activated by actions of fragmentation, intensification, spreading and mediation. As a result an hybrid topography rules the design of the area, posing the void space as generator through the creation of a new order elastic and flexible, of mediation between the big scale and the minor pattern.

“Against the aspiration to totalize the multitude of human discourses into a single system”

Gianni Vattimo

The conceptual proposal arises from the idea that architectural and urban renewal might be starting from signs, identities and hidden potentials of the area. The specific analysis of the main features of the area, such as existing architectural landscape, infrastructural system and existing natural landscape, is filtered through a layering procedure up to the definition of a physical masterplan. These three defined layers obey to their own internal rule and their superimposition determines the strategy for the architectural definition. The existing architecture is characterized by some main buildings showing a certain identity in the definition of

“New urbanism will no longer be concerned with the arrangement of more or less permanent objects but with the irrigation of the territories with potential; it will no longer aim for stable configurations but for the creations of enabling fields that accommodate processes that refuse to be crystallized into definitive form; it will no longer be about meticulous definitions, the imposition of limits, but about expanding notions, denying boundaries, not about separating and identifying entities but about discovering unnameable hybrids; it will no longer be obsessed with the city but with the manipulation of infrastructure for endless intensifications, shortcuts and redistributions – the reinvention of a psychological space” [OMA, Rem Koolhaas, Bruce Mau_ S, M, L, XL (1995)]

it

“A city is a living organism, a work-in-progress, an impasto of forms made by successive waves of habitation. One should continue to choose to do only projects which offer hope of a complex, integrated, contradictory and meaningful future” [Thom Mayne_ Morphosis: connected isolation (1993)]

scape is regarded as a flexible configuration of living spaces, subject to growth and change according to a natural pattern. The historical town is characterised by rigidly shaped blocks, defining the strong and fixed system of the Roman grid. The solid shape strictly defines the impossibility of an actual growth, although it is significant to point out that small scale complexity brings to big scale uniformity. The suburbs are mainly monofunctional housing districts, with a strong lack of identity and public space. The low occupation of the soil gives the possibility of growing, but the rule of developing is not usually meant to produce meaningful urban spaces, yet causes a general and psychotic urban sprawl. The synthesis of those considerations nourished an urban idea: the conceptual proposal is for a fluid city, capable of a biological and evolving metabolism and defining a topological concept of the space as programmatic instability.

The context analysis focuses on a territorial overview considering a range of three different situations, relating both physically and conceptually to the area. The agricultural landscape presents the typical morphology of juxtaposed fields, each one responding to a specific and internal natural rule. For the agricultural landscape, as it comes to the space, it is possible to define a tiny percentage occupied by buildings (“actual space”) and a large majority of void space (“potential space”): this ratio between solid and void can be read in the necessity of architecture of being nothing more than a built serving space, whereas the field itself is the main and actual living space. Pointing out its wide possibility of change in content and shape, the agricultural land-

The hybrid building reflects the hierarchy of the masterplan: the fixed structure becomes a virgin field for the development of an articulated program, including multi-typed housing, offices and ateliers, retail spaces for commerce and collective spaces. The ramp, providing a broad range of interactions, creates unpredictable situations as each program is aware of his coexistence with the others. As regards the language, the character of the building reflects its true nature, a box containing different spaces and uses: each is connoted as unique on the facade, which by the way keeps a ruling order given by the structure.

urban design settlement on chong ming island | shanghai, prc 2010 the urban proposal is stimulated by the chinese trend to build new towns strongly connected to big cities. the design themes are driven by the research of an urban fabric able to relate to the agricultural context. interaction of programs, morphological variety and a wide-spread landscape infrastructure define the main focus of the project, set on the chinese concepts of land division and fleeting distinction between public and private. pattern definition

urban design settlement on chong ming island | shanghai, prc 2010 the international design seminar in shanghai dealt with the possibility of installing a new town according to an ecological settlement model. in a rather ironical way, the project experiments with the underground as main settlement system and deals with the themes of spatial perception and sense of place in such a peculiar condition.

structural mechanics footbridge on the suzhou creek | shangh 2010 the design for a footbridge on the suzhou creek in shanghai raises the issue of the urban experience at a pedestrian speed within the chinese metropolis. strategically located along the huang pu river and connected to the bund, the bridge is conceptually designed around the theme of the double, both interpreting the chinese traditional culture of polarity and balance and the contemporary chinese experience of dynamism and contraddiction.

landscape design ticino waterfront urban park | pavia, it 2011 the project aims at interpreting the contradictory and complex situation suggesting the definition of an urban park, where different elements and morphologies could interact. the main focus is posed upon the boundaries, a common theme that unifies the different systems: limits become the reference elements for the design, specific inhabitable spaces. the overall concept is the reinterpretation of the historical gated garden (hortus conclusus), read in a contemporary way as a pole able to amplify and create density between artificial and natural elements, at urban and territorial scale.

n investigates both the role of the architect in contemporary society, and the inae of society as consumer for architecture. The humanist architect is a fundamental hitecture's mass marketing process, and he needs to back off from his stereotype of miurge, perched on the ivory tower of the Discipline.
