EDUCATE. EMPOWER. EMPLOY.
In October of 2004 BAYCAT opened it’s doors to you. We are a non-profit community media producer committed to using media and technology to facilitate positive change in our community. BAYCAT educates, empowers, and employs underserved youth and adults in the digital media arts. By bridging the digital divide, we inspire students to stay in school, become lifelong learners, and empower them to use the power of digital media and design to shape their communities and tell their unique stories. As you look through this brochure you will get an overview of the variety of free classes we’ve been able to offer, and the dynamic media Studio BAYCAT has been able to create to positively transform our community. Since our opening BAYCAT has educated over 1,800 youth. We’ve employed over fifty youth through our social
enterprise Studio BAYCAT, and their work has supported dozens of local San Francisco merchants and community organizations. We’ve entertained hundreds of thousands of audience members with our youth produced TV show Zoom IN and our Community Cinema films which have been screened world-wide. These numbers and this brochure can only begin to scratch the surface however when it comes to telling the stories of the young media producers who have been empowered by our BAYCAT community. I’m very proud of the work we’ve been able to accomplish so far, and look forward to continue growing BAYCAT to be a resource where you, and everyone in our community, can tell your stories and be inspired. Stop by for a tour anytime! We’re here for you!

OFF-SITE PROGRAMS
BAYCAT has expanded its programming off site by partnering with schools and organizations serving economically disadvantaged youth. At partnering sites, BAYCAT instructors teach youth side-by-side with school district teachers and community center administrators. As part of our commitment to community development, we “train the trainers, using our experience in digital media education to provide professional development to partnering instructors so they can better integrate digital media instruction into their programming. We have taught classes in video and TV production, graphic design and
music production in a multitude of schools and community based organizations. Our classes prepare students for a lifetime of education, expression and empowerment. Students learn not only the art of design and editing, but also the art of communication, collaboration, compromise, project management and critical thinking. Student teams complete projects that have a direct and visible effect on their schools and community – demonstrating to students the power of their voice and inspiring them to reclaim their future.

YOUNG ADULT EDUCATION
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Studio BAYCAT Internship Program employs three aspiring digital media producers from the Bay Area community each term. The internship program provides technical training for aspiring graphic designers and video producers as well as an opportunity to observe and gain hands-on experience in the digital media industry. The Internship Program increases the interns’ knowledge of workplace skills and provide them with on-the-job experience. In addition all interns play a pivotal role in BAYCAT’s Community Cinema Program.
COMMUNITY CINEMA The Community Cinema Program stemmed out of BAYCAT’s filmmaking internship program which culminates in the production of a short film. One of the guiding principles of the program is cultivating creative ingenuity through community involvement. The program engages youth from BAYCAT’s educational program, local actors, filmmakers, businesses, non-profits and artists to create grassroots media that allows them to share their community’s stories and to highlight local issues.
WORKSHOPS BAYCAT periodically hosts young adult workshops in media arts including digital imaging, video production and web design.
