The catch is that to ride this side you’ll also need to crest the ‘Gateway to the Galibier’ – the Col du Télégraphe – as well, turning the ride into something of an epic. Taken in this order on the Marmotte sportive (along with the Col du Glandon and Alpe d’Huez) is one of cycling’s greatest challenges. The views from the top overlooking the snow-covered La Meije and Massif du Pelvoux mountains make the oxygen-starved ride the top worthwhile. This range of mountains stretches from Valence in the east, Grenoble in the north and Die in the south, and spreads across two departments, the Drome and the Isere. The National Park status means the Vercors has a vast collection of natural wildlife, including wild boar (sanglier), stag (cerf), roe deer (chevreuil) and les chamois (small goats). There are over 140 bird species, including three kinds of falcons – familiar sights while cycling, even in the lower valley. Flora is also in abundance, with 28 rare or endangered species, including wild tulips, lady slipper orchids and edelweiss. More common flowers are narcissus, saxifrage and alpine gentian. The plateaux comes alive with wild crocus and other flowers in April when the snow recedes.

Driving Licence
When picking the car up, the main driver and any additional drivers will need to provide a full driving licence in their name. For drivers whose national licence has a photocard licence and a secondary paper counterpart licence, both parts will be required when collecting the vehicle. All drivers must hold a full and valid European driving licence. Customers should email the details of any endorsements / penalties on their driving licence to Rentalcars.com, as they might be refused the car at the counter.
International Driving Licence
An International Driving Licence is required if the driving licence is printed with nonRoman Alphabet. An International Driving Licence is required for drivers from outside the European Union.
Identification
A passport or identity card is required.
Identity Cards
EU citizens must produce their driving licence and either passport or identity card to pick up the car. All documents must have been issued at least 1 years before pickup. NonEU citizens residing in Italy for more than one year must produce an Italian driving licence and either their passport or identity card to pick the car up. All documents must have been issued at least 1 years before pickup.
Voucher / eVoucher
When picking the car up, the main driver must present their Rentalcars.com Voucher / eVoucher, which is issued after your booking is confirmed A voucher proves that the rental is booked in a customer's name and that it's paid for. At pickup, the car hire company will require EITHER a printed copy of the customer's voucher OR an eVoucher. If this is not presented, the car hire company may not allow the car to be picked up, or may charge again for the rental.

Not Included in the Rental Price
This section shows charges that you’ll pay at the counter because of where you're picking your car up, who's driving, and where you go during your rental. This section doesn’t show other overthecounter costs, such as charges for fuel, child seats or additional services. You are responsible for any charges and fines, including tolls, congestion charges, speeding tickets and parking or traffic fines. If you’ve incurred any charges, such as speeding tickets or unpaid congestion charges, the car hire company will try to contact you when the authorities ask them who was driving. This could be months after your rental – and you’ll have to pay the company’s administration fee as well as the original charge. Please note: to help you compare different deals, we’ve standardised the names of these charges. The names that your car hire company uses might be slightly different. The car hire company will charge you if the car needs more than a reasonable amount of cleaning after your rental. Unfortunately, the car hire company won't tell us how much this charge is. Deposit / Excess Amounts
The car hire company will require a deposit amount of 2600,00 € excluding tax at pickup. The deposit will be returned after the rental, as long as all conditions have been met. The car has a damage excess of 2200,00 € excluding tax. The car has a theft excess of 2800,00 € excluding tax. Due to fluctuating foreign exchange rates and other possible banking charges, the car hire company cannot be held responsible for any difference between the amount paid and the amount refunded. If theft or fire occurs in the Italian regions of Campania and Apulia, irrespective of the pickup location, the customer will be charged an excess of 5600,00 € excluding tax.
Cover Agreements
At the car hire counter, you may decide to buy additional cover to reduce or remove your excess, or to cover things your Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) doesn’t, such as tyres and windscreen. Please note: if you do, the contract will be between you and the car hire company. Since Rentalcars.com will not be involved at all, we won’t be able to help if you’re dissatisfied with the cost of the policy or the cover it provides. Please make sure that you read the terms and conditions you receive when you sign the agreement at pickup, to find out more about the policy’s exclusions and limits.
Fuel Options
When you pick your car up, the fuel tank will be full or partly full. You will leave a deposit to cover the cost of the fuel: the counter staff will block this money on your credit card. Just before you return your car, please replace the fuel you’ve used.
Refuelling charge
If you return your car with less fuel than it had when you picked it up, the car hire company will keep some or all of your deposit to cover the missing fuel. This will cost you more than you would pay to refill the tank yourself. As well as the cost of the fuel itself, you will pay a nonrefundable fuel service charge of 35,00 € excluding tax.
Equipment Rules
Customers requiring extra equipment may have to leave a deposit at the car hire counter.
