NEW BUILD APARTMENTS MANCHESTER, UK

2023 Manchester Architecture Awards Winner for Multi- Residential build category

Project brief:

A new build apartment scheme providing 15 much needed affordable homes in the centre of Altrincham town centre. The proposed layout is in direct response to the site’s historical urban grain which was demolished at the turn of the century. Reinstating the urban grain and reinforcing the row of terraced properties, provides New Street with a renewed identity. The proposal is uncompromisingly modern in its design, but a considered material palette anchors the scheme to its context.

SOCIAL HOUSING COMPETITION IN LARNACA, CYPRUS

3RD PLACE AWARD

Architectural approach:

The proposal consists of 35 new-built apartments with associated parking and landscaping divided into four building volumes. The proposed solution contains references from the local architecture and the island’s architecture in general, expressed in a contemporary way that meets the needs of the present.

The concept of Genius Loci “The Spirit of the Place” has been a central focus of the team’s research. Spatial qualities and architectural elements formed over time by anonymous architecture such as the simplicity of the volumes, the outdoor social space and the narrow urban pathways inspired the team to rediscover these elements in a contemporary way.

These elements have been incorporated and developed under the bright light of the Mediterranean climate. The schematic simplicity of the buildings in combination with their diverse configuration, create a variety of relationships between built and outdoor space.

APARTMENT RENOVATION NICOSIA, CY

Project brief: The apartment is located in the city of Nicosia in a 90’s apartment block. Client’s brief was to renovate the living space, kitchen and bathroom in a small available budget. The existing apartment suffered from lack of natural lighting and fluidity of the living spaces. Any layout adjustments had to work around the existing structure as no structural alterations were possible. The proposed design aimed to create a space that would feel bigger by connecting the living and kitchen spaces into one, improving the flow of movement thought the apartment. The central structural wall has been used as a feature which anchors the open spaces. The bottom of the wall is wrapped around in white Greek marble which is visible from everywhere within the open space. The marble corner acts as a strong visual hinge and the setting out point for the large format ceramic tiles.

Budget: 50K

Tasks undertaken as self-employed architect:

Design to construction supervision
