DELE

A chair inspired by an experience 6 Weeks

While studying furniture design in Denmark I was tasked to create a chair that reflected not only myself but also my time spent studying abroad.

Inspiration Pulling inspiration from the architecture of Grundtvigs church and works by Finnish designer Alvaar Alto I began to put together various components of my chair.

Development

The church had a light and airy feeling despite being constructed solely from brick. I sought out to create a chair that functioned similarly, being constructed from solid wood, but also feeling light and spacious.

Prototyping Mimicking the curves in the architecture of Grundtvigs church became difficult with the limited wood we were given. I ended up breaking up each side into three pieces.

Using a floating tenon joint I secured the leg sides of my chair to the base of the seat. I then used biscuits to secure the three sides together to avoid using support beams keeping the chair simple but sturdy.

To finish the chair we used a traditional Danish soap finish that provided a light finish without altering the wood coloring.

Constructed out of nine pieces of wood connected with biscuits and floating tennon joints Dele is an extremely sturdy stool. The seat is made out of woven fishing line to help the stool to appear light and airy. Each side draws the users eye down towards the ground causing the chair to appear tall and lean.

Emergency Flotation Device Ready for you when disaster hits 8 Weeks-Partner Project

The Emergency Flotation Device is stationed and ready to help when disaster hits. The device helps those that are already at risk because of flooding and also stops others from putting themselves at risk.

02

THE PROBLEM Flash floods hit the US every year and have alarming impacts on the communities that are hit. Flash Flooding is a type of flooding that begins within 6 hours, and often within 3 hours, of the heavy rainfall (or other cause). -The National Weather Service

“Flash Flooding occurs so quickly that people are caught off-guard. Their situation may become dangerous if they encounter high, fast-moving water while traveling.

Research and Development

In recent flash floods, these two women were stuck with their families for more than 24 hours trapped by the floods. Victims feel alone and helpless in the time prior to rescue arriving. Hurricane Harvey took the life of one woman who was driving through flood waters and became trapped, then stranded multiple other drivers on top of their cars on highways.

After conducting some research on recent floods throughout the US, my partner and I noticed a lack of communication between victims and rescue teams at the early stages of the disaster.

Ideation

We realized that people needed a signal and a sign of help they realize they are in danger. So we began to develop a device that would deploy the second flood levels become dangerous.

Prototyping

To determine exact proportions of the device we created paper, foam and clay models to work out how large the light would need to be on the seven foot innertube.

The Emergency Flotation Device Once floods are up to three feet the device is triggered and a floaty released from its roadside capsule. The device then can save those in need of help or warn those that the area is too dangerous to pass through,

The System Devices are stationed in high risk areas, where flooding is prone to happen. Once the device is surround ed by three feet of water, floties are deployed and rescue teams are alerted of flood locations while colors help to improve efficiency of emergenct rescue.

Emergency Flotation Device

The Emergency Flotation Device is there for victims of flash floods before rescue teams get there. The device serves as a beacon of safety for those who are caught with nowhere to go in a flash flood.

Ama

6 Week Project A modern take on perfume lockets, and inspired by my grandmothers stash of her mothers perfume, Ama helps you carry the comforting scent of people and places you love wherever you go.

03

A six week project where we were tasked to create a product for the Alessi Love Competition. The Alessi Love Competition tasked designers to “rethink the product as an act of love,” and create a product that reflects the feeling.

“A true design work must move people, convey emotions, bring back memories, surprise and go against common thinking.” -Alberto Alessi

Research

I then took the time to look at relationships and began to study how people interact when they are in love with someone or something.

I looked at the objects people may use to help them express love and the actions they might take. I found though my research that a persons sense of smell is the strongest link to a memory or a feeling.

Product Development

Inspired by the idea of a perfume locket I started to ideate around a unisex object that would allow the user to carry a scent with them in their pocket or purse.

How Ama Works Made with high quality metals and an internal plastic seal to keep perfumes/scents fresh.

When fidgeted with the worry stone shaped object releases the scent it carries surrounding you with the feeling of love.

VinyL Year long project

04

The Vinyl L helps you to display your passion for vinyl records your way.

“Sales of vinyl in 2016 reached a 25-year high as consumers young and old have once again embraced physical formats of music. -The Gaurdian

Research and Development

With further research I began to gather evidence that vinyl collectors (also referred to as Vinyl Junkies) are very passionate about their collections.

I also found though that there was a lack of options for displaying their collections.

Product Development

Prototyping

I looked into multiple different materials when prototyping The Vinyl L. I had to keep in mind I was manufacturing this product so the more complex the product the more expensive the produce will probably be.

The Vinyl L

The Vinyl L fits is made and manufactured in Chicago. The Vinyl L is made out of hard wood with a plywood back and acrylic guard. The Vinyl L fits up to five records and can display records in three different positions.

The Vinyl L can be hung up in three different positions from the same screws in the wall. The Vinyl L also can hold up to five single albums giving the user plent of options for showing off their vinyl collection.

The Dog Pack 9 Week Partner Project

So when emergeny hits, no one is left behind. The Dog Pack helps you transport elderly or injured pets while keeping your hands free.

05

The Problem

When disaster hits, often times pet owners have to make a challenging decision of whether or not they will be able to bring their pets with them. Our goal for this project was to make it easier for pet owners to bring their larger animals with them in times of emergency.

Research

Wanting to make sure dogs are calm and comfortable when being transported I looked into the parts of a larger dog that need the most support when being transported.

Ideation

Prototyping

With the prototype I found there were a number of components that the product would need to provide the proper amount of support a large dog would need to be comfortable.

The Dog Pack

With the proper support and hugging feel, dogs will be comfortable and at ease when emergencies hit. Users can carry their larger pets while keeping their hands free for opening doors and moving other important items.
