Happy New Year everyone! We hope that you are all in good spirits and that you’ve had some time off to spend with friends and family. This time of the year always seems to bring with it a bit of static in the air. We have high hopes and set ourselves up with some great New Year’s resolutions. My biggest resolution this year is to just take it one day at a time. One task, one cup of coffee, one tick on that never-ending to-do list. I find that the past year has been such a rush with wanting to do more and more, that it’s time to take it a bit slower. Hopefully, this will also include more time with the fur kids. They’ve had such a turbulent year of vet visits and medical scares that I’m looking forward to some calm. Taking a few more beach walks with the dogs and getting in some more cuddle time with the cats. Why don’t you send us your New Year’s resolutions so we can see what else we should be putting on our list.

Moving on to this issue, we start the year off with our annual Cover Model Winner, who was chosen from our Cover Model Competition. This is the first doggy winner that we’ve had in 3 years! Echo is a Bernese Mountain dog and is such a great ambassador for her breed. She also does a lot for animal welfare and awareness. Please check out her Q&A on page 8. We also feature some of her mom’s writing on page 24, so go and check out what this dog mom has to say on the topic.

As always, we also have our regular advice columns and travel destinations to look forward to. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did putting it all together.

Happy Reading!

Veterinary Hospital

What is a veterinarian? A veterinarian is your pets’ General Practitioner, dentist, nutritionist, dermatologist, surgeon, pet whisperer, audiologist, optometrist, guide over the rainbow bridge and a shoulder to cry on for their owners.

Hello! I am doctor Paul Bernhardi. Together with my lovely wife, we have two beautiful children.

After graduating from the University of Pretoria at Onderstepoort, I joined the Blue Cross Veterinary Hospital in 2001. The Blue Cross Veterinary Hospital was founded in 1924 and is the most established practice in the country. We offer a wide range of veterinary services for both large and small animals. This includes, but is not limited to, medicine, surgery, dentistry, micro-chipping, and physical rehabilitation services for your pet. Our emphasis is on preventative medicine; however, I am proud to be part of a team that is competent and adequately equipped to provide each patient with the medical attention they need.

Over the years I have grown my family of pets to a modest total of 32, some of whom were rescues.

Through my passion for animals, I offer free sterilisations to certain animal welfare groups, such as the Aid 4 Animals in Distress, who strive to provide professional veterinary care that is built on a foundation of focussed animal care education within marginalised communities.

My day starts off with a spirited school run, after feeding the zoo at home, often leading straight into consultations where I get to interact with different breeds of animals, each with unique needs. Theatre procedures follow thereafter and as a veterinarian, this is where I get the opportunity to positively

impact the lives of each of my patients as well as their families.

Each pet I meet has a different personality and temperament, making every case somehow unique. As the pet owner, you may not know what your pet might have bumped into or secretly snacked on, potentially causing an obstruction, that is why patient diagnosis and treatment management are skills I have carefully honed over the years.

Being truly dedicated to animal welfare and working hard are attributes that I believe form the foundation of becoming a good veterinarian, however, to remain a good veterinarian one must stay up to date with new technologies, techniques, and treatment plans as they emerge.

Blue Cross Veterinary Hospital operates with both a booking system for clients who can schedule their appointments as well as triage for emergencies. Among the services available at the Blue Cross Veterinary Hospital is a grooming facility where I assist with sedations and emergencies. I enjoy taking a run in the picturesque Newlands Forest during the day to get some exercise and feel the wind blowing through my hair.

To aspiring vets, no two days are the same in our industry. Remember to be a good listener as well as a good communicator.

Your Pet. Your Vet. My Passion.

Hi, my name is Dexter. I’m everyone’s favourite kid. I love walks, cuddles, and belly rubs. My mom always yells at me for opening the door while she’s using the bathroom, she’s so silly. She also complains that I get the “zoomies” way too much, but I know she loves it. I’m my mom’s best friend and she’s mine (only when she gives me treats).

2023 Cover Model Winner Echo

Are you one of those people who gets all giddy when you see a dog in public? Trying to make eye contact with the human on the other side of the leash to see if they would approve of you smothering their K-9 with affection? Good, so am I!

Luckily for us, most people don’t have an issue with the public show of affection unless their pup has a medical reason or personality that doesn’t allow for it. If it works for the dog, it usually works for the human.

Echo and her mom are the same. From cuddles on the couch to cuddles with strangers, what makes them happy is spreading the love and awareness of a breed that has a personality that is even bigger than their physique. Bernese Mountain Dogs were originally bred in Switzerland to assist with farm work and herding cattle, which makes them very active – a major issue if you don’t do your research before welcoming this breed into your home. What struck me about Estaschia, specifically, was how determined she is to create awareness on this topic.

Here's what she had to tell us about our beautiful cover model:

Echo

The story starts when I was touring Europe while pursuing a music career in my younger years. I had no clue the breed existed and when I laid eyes on this massive smiling creature, I was sold. We were in Norway at that time, spending the holidays with my best friend’s family, and I was glued to this dog’s side. I was obsessed.

Years later, after doing my research and having to wait a couple of years due to various factors, we set out on our eight hour adventure to get Echo and a few of her siblings to Gauteng. The other pups’ owners were lucky I let them go – I was ready to be a mum of three bears.

It’s one of those unspoken things that people with dogs must just live with. We love our pooches dearly and we appreciate it when other people pay them attention as well. Big fluffy faces and sloppy kisses are the best, aren’t they?

Remember that time before covid hit and we were all working in an office environment with tough deadlines and crappy people? At that time, I wanted to have a therapy dog for the corporate version of me as I was diagnosed with anxiety, and it fit the timeline of when I was going to get my dream dog. The plan was for Echo to go to work with me and help me ignore triggers or help ease them.

Echo was in the office with me for a good month before covid happened. Then we all had to work from home and logistics changed. My anxiety got better but I didn’t want to let the idea of a therapy dog go. So I started taking her to places where people needed some extra love and cuddles, but where they can’t always have animals for therapy. Animal therapy is growing in South Africa, and I am proud that my fluff butt gets to be part of that change.

what is Echo’s favouritE PastiME?

Driving. Echo has the biggest smile on her face when her head is popped out the back window with the wind in her ears. A close second would be exploring, as she goes everywhere with me and gets to meet a lot of people.

what is thE silliEst/ naughtiEst thing Echo’s EvEr DonE?

Asking a Berner owner this is tough because they are goofy creatures by nature. However, she did like to eat my underwear when she was 6 months old, and we had frequent trips to the vet. She would find a way to get into the laundry basket and dig out my best undies. As soon as she noticed you saw her with that piece of fabric, she would just swallow it. She probably wanted to follow in the steps of a lingerie model.

can touch and rub her anywhere and she won’t give a fluff, but what I adore doing that makes her scowl, is tickle her paws. The hair between her paw pads is quite sensitive and she will kick to let you know to stop. If you don’t, you get a very annoyed glance.

Echo is quite chill with most things. You

What does your routine look like during the week?

After dad gets up for work, we get to cuddle properly with belly rubs and we motivate each other to get out of bed. This is every morning. Between me working and telling her what a good girl she is for allowing me to work without her heavy sighing, we go for three walks a day and also some play dates. We schedule monthly therapy sessions with organisations to be sure to give everyone we can awesome vibes. Life is demanding and since my life took a massive change two years ago, I am still trying to balance being Echo’s momager and a hardworking human contributing to society.

Big fluffy faces and sloppy kisses are the

Echo is our kiddo, and everyone in my life knows that if she can’t go, I would likely not be there as she is never left alone. You wouldn’t exclude your kid from big events, so why wouldn’t I have my dog as our ring bearer? Choosing a venue was solely based on whether they allow dogs, no matter how gorgeous. I am pretty stubborn regarding certain things, and we were lucky that our dream venue had no issue with Echo being there.

aren’t they?

My maid of honour was Echo’s keeper for the day and she spent the whole day chilling with the girls. From hair and makeup to photos and celebrations, Echo was there. She had a bow in her hair and the rings were tied around her neck in a red velvet box. She walked down the aisle first and was up front with the rest of the bridal party. She was the goodest girl.

I was met with many concerns from family regarding Echo, because what if she messed up the day? What if she did something? Well, I wanted to have a wedding that would be remembered, and who remembers events that go perfectly? Boring! Our wedding had moments that didn’t follow a schedule or that weren’t rehearsed and we loved that. It was us, and Echo is a huge part of what makes our story. She will never be left out of it!

Because of Echo’s striking good looks, friendly temperament and soft fur, literally everyone wants one. We get stopped a lot, and I welcome it, but before I give people any breeder details, I make sure they know that Bernese Mountain Dogs aren’t at all the same as the dogs we have in South Africa. You are supposed to do your research before welcoming any dog into your family, but I also tell them things that the internet surely didn’t tell me.

I had done years of research before I got Echo, and I was still not prepared

for many things. As beautiful as she is, here is a common mistake most people make. They are goofy, gentle giants, but they have a high energy drive and, being a working breed, need proper mental and physical stimulation. Their intelligence makes them stubborn, and unlike smaller dogs that you can just pick up if they don’t want to walk or listen, good luck picking up a headstrong 50kg – 70kg dog.

Berners are also needy; they want to be with their owners all the time and you can’t just leave them outside or alone as they become destructive and will dig up your entire garden. You can’t be mad at them for it either. Same with any other breed. You will have to put the work in and can’t fault them for being who they are.

best,

Choose what you are willing to tolerate and compromise on, else, choose a different breed or just don’t get a dog.

This is another reason why we partnered with GCS Joint Care Advanced, because bigger dogs are more prone to joint and hip issues. So, we try and use as many platforms as we can to help get the message out there of proper nutrition for your dog.

This breed is growing in this country, but overbreeding is what I am so scared of. Or having them end up in shelters because people aren’t being thorough enough. We have seen this happen to Huskies most of all, because people do not grasp the breed in their entirety. People who read this magazine are probably ones who are responsible owners and understands this, but for the rest, I wish it could sink in that animals aren’t property, they are family.

what is Echo’s nEw yEar’s rEsolution for 2023?

Probably to have more beach adventures. Echo loves the beach and chasing seagulls is an entertaining pastime for her. On a more serious note, it would be to reach more people to help educate them on dogs in general, and give even more people smiles. We love making people’s hearts happy.

And there you have it! Our ambassador for 2023. Welcome to the family, Estatchia and Echo! We hope you have fun this year and that we will be seeing a lot more from you and the wonderful work you do.

Top Tips with your Destructivedog’s Behaviour

We got Timmy and Linc when I was just 21 and my (now) husband 25. They were perfect from the start – I never had to actually teach them anything, they just got it. Sure, in the beginning they got up to the usual puppy mischief – pulled the stuffing out of the leather couch, chewed an iPod and wee’d in places they shouldn’t (including the head of a sleeping guest), but otherwise they were angels and ‘grew out of’ any destructive behaviour. Something I definitely took for granted.

for dealing

When Oliver came bounding into our lives in March 2021 after Timmy got his rainbow wings, he brought with him a whole new energy and dynamic. He was the most adorable puppy who did adorably cute things like dig holes, destroy all his toys, and steal anything and everything. Since Timmy and Linc never did

anything like this, we found this behaviour endearing. But now, at almost 2 years old, with no signs of him stopping (and to be honest, he has added to his repertoire), it’s not looking so adorable anymore.

Though that hasn’t stopped me from pausing to take a picture or video for the Gram before attempting to correct his behaviour.

16
I believe that Oliver came into our lives to not only completely disrupt it, but to test us as well and challenge everything we thought we knew about raising dogs.

Destructive behaviour can manifest itself as chewing, digging, barking, and excessive licking, to name a few. However, not all destructive behaviour is equal. Chewing and digging are completely normal and are ways that dogs use to explore the world around them. Read on to gain an understanding of why your dog is behaving this way and for tools on how to rectify the issue before you break your ankle in the large hole your pup is digging to China.

Identify the underlying issue

Your dog isn’t chewing your favourite pair of shoes just to be naughty or exact revenge for that last vet visit. The chewing or digging is your dog’s way of communicating and identifying the root cause of the behaviour will help you to resolve the issue. Boredom, excess energy, separation anxiety and attention seeking are the most common causes for destructive behaviour.

If your dog is bored and under stimulated, they will seek out ways to entertain themselves and relieve their frustrations. Provide your dog with enough physical exercise (walks, play dates, outings) and mental stimulation (food puzzles, sniffaris). These same techniques can also be used for dogs who are hyperactive and need to burn their excess energy.

If your dog acts out, barks continuously or is destructive when you are not home, they may suffer from separation anxiety. When you leave, your dog panics and worries that you may never return and as a result turns to barking, pacing, or chewing. Separation anxiety can be resolved but it is best to seek professional advice from a behaviourist as there is no quick fix.

Often when your dog destroys things in your presence, it is because they are seeking your attention. This is Oliver through and through. His favourite thing to do is steal socks, slippers, scrubbing brushes, coffee sachets, you name

it, and then come and present them to you. As a responsible dog mom, I then try to remove said item which results in him running away and me giving chase. Which is exactly what he wants me to do and why he keeps on doing it. To curb this behaviour, engage in types of play that your dog likes i.e., chase them, tug-of-war, etc.

Redirect the behaviour

Once you have determined the cause of your dog’s destructiveness, you can go about trying to redirect some of the undesirable behaviour. If you catch your dog chewing on the furniture, their bedding, or your shoes, tell them no and swap out the item with a toy that they are allowed to chew. Be sure to praise them when they redirect their focus and attention to the toy and reward them when they actively seek out the chew toy instead of your shoes.

If your dog is an avid gardener like Ollie, create an area in your garden where your dog is allowed to dig, or alternatively fill one of those big plastic shells with river sand and let them have at it. Fill the shell or the safe space in your garden with treats and toys that will encourage your dog to dig the specified area only. And of course, give them lots of excited praise!

Dog proof your house

Don’t set your dog up for failure. If your dog has a penchant

for socks, don’t leave them lying around. Destroying all their toys? Keep them out of reach and only give them to your dog under supervision.

Offer distractions when they are alone

To keep your dog occupied and engaged while you are out, provide them with long lasting chews or treat dispensing toys. Fillable toys which you then freeze to ensure it lasts longer can provide hours of mental simulation and ensure that your dog does not get bored or frustrated. Be sure to rotate the types of toys so that the toy offered is always new and exciting.

Calming supplements

If your dog is quite anxious, you can use natural supplements, pheromones, or music to calm your dog and relieve their stress and anxiety. Remember that supplements often require time to build up in the system and need to be used on a fairly continuous basis if you are to see any results. Additionally, consult with your vet first before giving your dog any new medication.

NUTRITIONAL Supplements

Nutritional Supplements

Nutritional supplements are vitamins, minerals and other biologically active molecules (nutrients) that are added to the diet to balance and enhance it. There are various nutrients that serve specific functions in the body. These may be incorporated directly into the food or may be given as tablets, powders or liquids.

High quality nutrition

We know that people who eat healthily and have an active lifestyle have a longer life expectancy that those who do not. The same is true for our pets. The most crucial component of nutrition for your pet is ensuring that you are supplying a high quality, veterinary approved diet. These diets have been scientifically formulated and balanced to meet the needs of your pet. Choose the right diet for your pet’s age, breeds and activity levels to ensure that their nutrition is optimal. When purchasing pet food, you get what you pay for. There is no degree of nutritional supplementation that can compensate for feeding a cheap, poor quality diet.

BY: DR KATHRYN KNIPE FROM BIRNAM VETERINARY CLINIC

Supplements are available for various conditions

General health and condition supplements

If you are feeding a high quality commercially produced diet that is appropriate for your pet, you should not need to add any supplements, provided that your pet is healthy. Home-cooked diets can however be deficient in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients for good health and may need to be supplemented. It is very important to use a speciesspecific supplement to avoid deficiencies or toxicities.

Joint Supplements

These supplements are prescribed for patients suffering from and predisposed to osteoarthritis (a chronic inflammatory condition of the joints which causes pain and loss of mobility). Joint supplements contain ingredients which have anti-inflammatory effects in the joint, protect cells from free radical damage and provide building blocks for cartilage and joint fluid.

Important ingredients to look out are glucosamine, chondroitin, EPA and DHA (omega 3 fatty acids), Vitamin E, Vitamin C and green lipped mussel extract.

Skin Supplements

Skin supplements are typically prescribed for patients with skin allergies or dry, flaky, itchy skin. These supplements are designed to provide nutrients essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. They also have an anti-inflammatory effects. Important ingredients include Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids (found in flaxseed, Evening Primrose and marine fish oils), Vitamins A, C and E, biotin, nicotinamide and zinc. Humans and animals have different requirements for omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, therefore you should not use a human supplement for your pets.

Geriatric Supplements

As our pets age they may start experiencing deteriorating eye sight, cognitive function, mobility and general body condition. They can also become deficient in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients as they tend to eat less due to decreasing appetite.

Supplements for geriatric animals contain ingredients that aid in brain function, provide joint support and help maintain lean muscle mass. Important ingredients include omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, carotenoids and flavonoids, Vitamin E, L-carnitine, antioxidants and taurine.

Calming Supplements

Anxiety in dogs and cats can manifest as behavioural problems as well as medical conditions. Some dogs are prone to stressinduced tummy upsets, where cats are prone to urinary tract problems. Ingredients in calming aids that are useful include theanine, tryptophan, Vitamins B1, B3, B6 and B12 and milk hydrolysates such as alpha casozepine.

Liver Supplements

Liver supplements are used for liver failure, hepatitis and damage to the liver as result of toxin exposure. They contain ingredients that support liver function, decrease inflammation and provide nutrients that the liver may struggle to produce if it’s under strain.

Important ingredients are milk thistle, thioctic acid, pangamic acid, L-carnitine, Vitamins E, K and B-complex vitamins.

Kidney Supplements

Kidney supplements are used for patients at risk of and suffering from chronic kidney failure. They contain ingredients that bind phosphate in the intestine (as excess phosphate levels worsen kidney failure) and have protective effects on the kidneys (anti-inflammatories and antioxidants). Ingredients to look out for are Omega 3 fatty acids, Co-enzyme Q10, chitosan, Vitamin C, B-complex vitamins and Vitamin E. Interestingly, the addition of Omega 6 fatty acids to the diet has been shown to be detrimental to patients suffering from kidney disease. Be very careful when selecting any supplements for patients with kidney failure as they have very specific nutrient requirements and restrictions. Giving an inappropriate supplement may negatively affect your pet.

Digestive Supplements

Most digestive supplements are given to patients suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Important ingredients are prebiotics, probiotics, glutamine, gastrointestinal adsorbents, vitamins and minerals. Probiotics are live healthy bacteria, whereas prebiotics are special fibres that feed those healthy bacteria. Glutamine is an amino acid that is used by the intestinal lining cells to regenerate. Kaolin, pectin and diosmectite are intestinal adsorbents that help to mop up toxins from the intestine (such as those produced by bacteria during infections). Vitamins and minerals are added to replace losses from

vomiting or diarrhoea.

Calcium supplements

Calcium supplements are to be used with extreme caution and only under instruction from your veterinarian. They may be prescribed to lactating bitches and queens showing symptoms of inadequate calcium levels. However, if these supplements are fed to animals that do not have a calcium deficiency, the body’s natural processes balancing calcium are disrupted, which may lead to more severe signs of hypocalcaemia (low calcium levels) when the body’s need is at its highest. Supplementing calcium in especially large breed puppies can lead to growth abnormalities.

Quality and Safety of supplements

There is no legal requirement for quality control of supplements. Studies have shown that a large proportion of supplements do not contain the ingredients they claim to on the packaging. Some products have even been found to contain toxic substances. That is why you should at all times use only products that have been recommended by your veterinarian.

Conclusion

Greyhound

For the greater part of my life, my only knowledge of the Greyhound was what I saw when there was a rare showing of greyhound racing on TV. With great naivety, I marvelled at the vision of these speedsters chasing a mechanical hare around an oval track. In my innocence, I felt I was watching the doglike version of horse racing and was amused when I heard people labelling it as “poor man’s horse racing.” I was captivated by their beautiful style of pace and aerodynamic beauty. They appeared to move like a canine twin of a cheetah.

Then, several years ago, after teaching overseas and on our return living in accommodation that didn’t allow pets, we were ready to bring a dog into our lives. We didn’t, for one moment, consider purchasing a puppy from a breeder. After volunteering at the Garden Route SPCA, we realised there was a desperate need to adopt a rescued dog.

We did our homework (our son called it a military campaign) and decided that a greyhound would be the most suitable breed for our circumstances. As a breed, greyhounds are obedient and loving with a wonderfully calm temperament. These gifts have made them perfect company for the elderly, and many become service and therapy dogs.

They were bred for speed and have not lost any of that flair. It is a wonderful sight to watch a greyhound running and play-dodging on an expanse of grassland.

Our homework involved reading up on the greyhound breed on Google (the in term seems to be Googling) and by chance that brought us into contact with Cheryl Campbell. Cheryl is the founder of a wonderful charity, Sighthound Rescue SA in Cape Town. The objective of SRSA is to rescue, foster and home sighthounds. Although based in Cape Town, sighthounds from

many parts of South Africa become a member of the SRSA family. It soon became clear to Carol and I that we wanted to become actively involved with Sighthound Rescue SA and not long after, we were accepted as foster parents.

I have recounted our experiences of fostering in a previous issue of this magazine, but I would like to mention two of our foster furkids, Shakes (Shakespeare) and Paddy. Both these charming young men were originally kept as hunting hounds.

Hounds are used to illegally hunt wild animals and are frequently kept in inadequate and unacceptable conditions which include many hounds crowded together in uninhabitable, filthy enclosures infested with a multitude of parasites. Shakes and Paddy were rescued from a life ruled by “taxi hunting.”

Taxi hunting is a form of illegal hunting using packs of hounds that trespass a private farm or reserve. The hounds are starved to make them hungry for prey. They are often given steroids to develop their strength and stamina. During the kill there is no concern for the suffering of the prey.

Taxi hunting is not only a cruel and vicious sport, but also a thriving business. Bets are made on which will

be the first hound to kill its prey and the winning hound can be sold for huge amounts after a successful hunt.

The hunters not only show scant regard for the prey that is hunted, but also leave injured hounds to suffer untreated with a lack of medical care. If the hound is severely injured or no longer productive hunters, they are callously discarded and left to fend for themselves.

This is where rescue charities enter the picture and go to great lengths to save the hounds. Shelter, food and medical treatment are provided and, frequently, foster families found to look after the hounds until they are physically fit to be adopted. Sometimes the foster family is there to assist the hounds to become adapted to a loving domestic environment. This is what makes fostering so rewarding. Many times, we are confronted by stunned individuals who cannot believe that we can give up our foster hounds to a forever home. Shakes and Paddy are wonderful examples of how forgiving and adaptable these ex-hunters can be when they experience home-life and illustrate the kindness and generosity of people who are willing to adopt rescued hounds. Shakes and Paddy now live in extremely comfortable homes. They deserve it.

Maybe you are interested in adopting a sighthound or you know someone who is interested. Here are a few misperceptions regarding the Greyhound that may help in any decision making.

1. grEyhounDs nEED lots of ExErcisE .

They are known as supersonic couch potatoes for a very good reason. They love a daily walk or a sprint around a secure field, but they are not designed for endurance. Once home, they are happy to sleep and relax. They are considered to be a lazy breed; however, they do like to play when they are ready. A greyhound loves to frantically run around in circles in short spurts, side-stepping, and dodging others around them.

2. grEyhounDs lovE to racE

.

If you call galloping in circles around the garden or sports field racing, then yes, they love to race. Although they are deemed to be the fastest dog, they should not be subjected to the cruel world of racing on a track.

bEing a largE Dog, EyhounDs arE not suitED to sMall hoMEs.

Greyhounds have a great ability to squeeze themselves into an embryonic position to create their comfort zone. They may be couch potatoes, but the couch can be a small couch. In fact, the whole living area doesn’t need to be spacious. The greyhound was voted as a top breed for compact home living.

4. grEyhounDs Don’t likE cuDDlEs.

Shakes and Paddy were both used as hunting hounds and had many scars on their bodies to prove it and yet, within minutes of entering our home, they were relaxed and hinted at jumping onto our laps for comfort and security. Many evenings were spent watching TV with a 25 kg greyhound cuddling up close to us.

5. grEyhounDs hatE cats.

Although greyhounds are naturally mellow dogs they are, after all, sighthounds and can easily be tempted to chase small moving objects. This strong prey drive means that when in public places, a greyhound needs to be on a leash. I have a friend with a greyhound and a cat in the family!

6. grEyhounDs arE DEsignED for lifE outsiDE

.

Cold and heat can be a huge problem for greyhounds as they have very little body fat and an extremely fine coat. If left to their own devices, a greyhound will find a warm, comfortable place to relax. This can be indoors or outdoors, but they must be allowed to sleep indoors at night.

7. grEyhounDs arE uniquE .

Every dog is unique and yes, greyhounds are judged by the image of them sprinting around an oval racetrack, but these astonishing dogs are faithful, devoted, loving, playful, and sensitive.

8. IncluDing a rEscuED grEyhounD in your faMily is Difficult. truE!

It becomes difficult not to join them in exercise each day.

It becomes difficult to tear yourself away from their cuddles.

It is difficult to ignore and not return their unconditional love.

It is difficult to accept that there are cruel people who would want to harm them.

It becomes more and more and more difficult to believe how obedient they are.

Adopt a rescued Greyhound, accept their unconditional love, and share their enjoyment of life. Who knows, you may decide to adopt another and another.

Nearly forgot to mention, their coats are incredibly low maintenance.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Calling me a dog lover is most certainly an understatement. I drove my husband mad with images of puppies and dogs in general since the day we met. Steph and I were only dating a couple of months when I had to put down my first dog, Nuschka, as she was 15 years at the time and diagnosed with dementia and cancer. I was gutted. Steph learned early how emotionally attached I was to animals, especially dogs, any dog. I will literally cry with you in the Vet’s office having just met you. Empath? Wuss? Meh, here’s a tissue.

Touring Europe at 20 years old, I came across a breed in Norway that just blew my mind. I remember my best friend, Kristine, telling me how big her aunt’s dog Tinka was, and that I shouldn’t get a fright when I meet Tinka. Being such an avid dog lover, it is always such an adventure to meet any dog, so should I one day die by a giant and excited dog greeting me, so be it.

May that be proudly engraved onto my tombstone.

"As an experiment, or call it a sign, I decided to call out the name we have chosen beforehand just to see if she would, against all odds, recognize we were here for her."

I was not prepared for the meeting with Tinka. Nope. I couldn’t kick off my shoes fast enough before this giant tri-colour fluff ball galloped down the stairs hitting everyone with her tail in her attempt to give me her friendliest greeting. Oh my! I was a goner, and it was love at first sight. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Bernese Mountain Dog. OOF! Infatuated with this domesticated “bear”, I forgot my manners and immediately crashed to the carpeted floor by Tinka’s side while the rest of humankind did the

civilised thing by exchanging social niceties and taking a seat on the couch. You could find me trotting with the dog - I am all good thanks.

Since that day I vowed that I would one day own one of these magnificent Bernese Mountain dogs no matter what, and here I am 9 years later. I have done excessive research and followed numerous online social media accounts of both breeders and owners of Berners, because I wanted in-depth knowledge into the breed and what they are all about. We all know that a quick Google search won’t just reveal it all, you need to dig deeper and get familiar with the pros and cons.

I found a breeder in South Africa and got placed on a 3-year waiting list, (enter crying emoji because I wanted her now!) – but it worked out for the better,

24 JANUARY 2023 | PETPRINTS

because boy, did I have to save and get my shizz together to give this dog the life this breed deserved. Within the same time span I was also going through a lot in my personal life, and I remember thinking, “I may not be able to control many things in my life, but this I can. I can control loving this dog and giving her my all...” – that is exactly what I did.

Fast forward through a difficult time in my life, then finding my husband, while at the same time annoying the breeder with a million questions, photos, and videos my count down began. What started as an eternity finally turned into the final countdown and, we were on our way to meet our baby bear.

The three of us were greeted by bark upon barks from the Bernese Mountain Dog tribe. I was soaring with happiness and had no idea or a care what the other two were doing. My eyes were riveted on the white door being opened. My gaze fixed on a litter of puppies rushing out with their tiny legs. I just had to pick up one of these bouncing beans and get my fix of puppy breath, ah man. That's the good stuff. As an experiment, or call it a sign, I decided to call out the name we have chosen beforehand just to see if she would, against all odds, recognize we were here for her. A little head popped up in the grass looking at me excitedly, and I squealed. Was that her? Leaping over and checking her collar, I realised it was her indeed, and I was over the moon, she knew her name! Probably coincidental but you know what, let me believe that she is the smartest, ‘bestest’ and just perfect. Hello Echo, welcome to the family!

I want to keep this space real and honest, so I will share that having her home after a long trip was wholesome, fun, and filled with cuteness, however they were also filled with so many tears and doubt. I spent many days waking up crying over her and telling my husband-and Kristine I made a mistake and that we must give her back. She felt so unreal to me, and I was afraid that something bad was going to happen to her, and that she deserved better than me. This was probably the build-up of finally getting my dream dog, and yes, also some personal issues.

Thank goodness Kristine and my husband, Steph, were very firm with me and convinced me that we are perfect together.

Now, please note I am not a mother of a human that I had to grow inside of me and I by no means relate this to any personal experience motherhood may have on one’s body, but I have dedicated those two-weeks as my “postpartum” stage. Bursting into tears of frustration because this little ball of pure love looked at me and I had no idea what she wanted or needed. It made me feel unworthy of her. I was later very grateful that I decided to take leave from my work for these teething stages, never imagining that I was the one who needed to settle in.

We always think we know how it all will go, but I truly had no idea just how she would change my life...

FASCINATING

THE SCIENTIFIC NAME FOR LADYBUG IS THE COCCINELLIDAE SEPTEMPUNCTATA.

Coccinellidae septempunctata means "seven-spot ladybird".

Ladybugs, or lady beetles, are classed as insects in the beetle family.

Sometimes ladybugs are called ladybird beetles or lady beetles - ladybugs are not actually bugs.

Beetles have the ability to chew and enjoy munching on plants and insects, while bugs have needle-like mouthparts and mostly a liquid diet.

There are more than 5,000 different species of ladybirds that have been discovered in the world.

Ladybugs live almost all over the world, except in the North and South Pole or places where it is very cold, like Russia and parts of North America.

THE LADYBUG HABITAT IS IN GRASSLANDS, FORESTS AND RIVERS AS WELL AS IN CITIES AND

Thousands of ladybugs may gather in the same location, taking advantage of the collective warmth of a group to stay warm and safe.

When winter is approaching, ladybugs come together to reproduce right before hibernation.

During this hibernation period, which can last up to nine months, the ladybug will live on their fat reserves until food sources becomes more available again.

Ladybugs are best known as a red insect with black spots, but they actually come in a variety of colours, with some having stripes or no markings at all.

In addition to the red colour, they can also be orange, yellow, brown, pink, or even all black.

The spots and bright colours on ladybugs are meant to warn other predators that it may taste bad or be poisonous.

The ladybug has a known defense mechanism referred to as the ‘reflex bleeding’. They emit foul-smelling blood from their leg joints when they’re startled which is toxic to many ladybug predators such as birds and small mammals.

LADYBUGS ARE KNOWN TO PLAY DEAD WHEN THEY ARE IN DANGER.

They grow up to one centimeter (1 cm) long.

THE FASTEST SPEED A LADYBUG CAN FLY IS UP TO 24 KILOMETERS PER HOUR.

Most ladybugs are oval-shaped, with six legs that are quite short.

A ladybug’s eyes are called compound eyes, which means that they can see in lots of different directions at once.

SIMILAR TO BUTTERFLIES, LADYBUGS GO THROUGH FOUR STAGES BEFORE THEY COMPLETE THEIR METAMORPHOSIS. THEY START OUT AS TINY EGGS THAT HATCH INTO LARVAE THAT RESEMBLE TINY SPINY ALLIGATORS. AFTER THAT, THEY BEGIN THE PUPAL STAGE. IN THE FINAL PHASE, THEY BECOME ADULT LADYBUGS AND THEIR HIDDEN WINGS APPEAR.

Adult ladybugs have a large and rounded protective shell on their backs to protect its fragile wings when it is not in flight. This protective shell is also called the

The protective shell is considered to be a type of changed forewings as they can open and close on command when a ladybug takes flight or lands on surfaces.

JANUARY 2023 | PETPRINTS

FACTS

Once unfolded, ladybug wings can move at a rate of 85 beats per second.

This hard shell also protects the organs inside of their small bodies from predators.

The average lifespan of a ladybug is one year, although, on rare occasions, these insects can live up to two years.

DIFFERENT SPECIES OF LADYBUGS HAVE DIFFERENT FOOD PREFERENCES, AND THEY ARE MOSTLY CARNIVORES WHICH MEANS THEY EAT OTHER INSECTS.

Gardeners welcome ladybugs with open arms, knowing that they prefer a diet of plant-damaging insects, like aphids.

As larvae, they eat pests by the hundreds. Ladybugs love to eat scale insects, fruit flies, whiteflies, thrips, mites, and aphids.

An adult ladybug can devour around 50 aphids per day, and scientists estimate that the insect consumes as many as 5,000 aphids over its lifetime.

WHEN FOOD IS SCARCE, LADYBUGS WILL DO WHAT THEY MUST TO SURVIVE, EVEN IF IT MEANS EATING EACH OTHER - NEWLY EMERGED ADULT LARVAE ARE SOFT ENOUGH FOR THE AVERAGE LADYBUG TO CHEW.

Scientists believe that ladybugs will deliberately lay infertile eggs as a ready source of food for their babies to have a better chance of surviving.

A FEMALE LADYBUG LAYS A BATCH OF BRIGHT-YELLOW EGGS IN ROWS

OR CLUSTERS

UNDERNEATH A LEAF, AND AS SOON AS THEY HATCH, THE LARVAE IMMEDIATELY START EATING.

They prefer to lay their eggs on leaves near food sources like aphids.

Newborns hatch as larvae in 4 to 10 days and then spend about four weeks feeding.

ONCE THE LARVAE ARE WELL-FED, THEY'LL BEGIN TO BUILD A PUPA, AND AFTER 7 TO 10 DAYS THEY EMERGE AS ADULTS.

Ladybug larvae resemble miniature alligators. They have long, pointed abdomens, spiny bodies, bumpy skin, and 6 legs that are quite short.

LADYBUGS ARE HARMLESS TO HUMANS AND IN MANY CULTURES, THEY’RE CONSIDERED GOOD LUCK.

They aren’t often preyed upon, but predators include birds, assassin bugs, wasps, spiders, dragonflies, and frogs.

The seven marks of the common seven-spot ladybug reminded people of the seven sorrows of the Virgin Mary, therefore ladybugs are named after the Virgin Mary (according to the Oxford English Dictionary).

Ladybugs population reduction may be due to climate change, environmental issues, or diseases.

Kyron Vet Rx reaching out to the hands of welfares that make a Difference

elfare in South Africa have unending lists of animals that require medical necessities to provide the treatment these animals almost always, unfortunately, critically need. Examples of these medications would be deworming, tick and flea treatment, diarrhoea treatment, supplements to help assist treatment of skin and joint problems, wound cleaners, and treatment, as well as calming medication but severe budget constraints make it difficult for them to afford these treatments that are needed daily.

Cipla Vet/Ascendis Vet/Kyron Vet Rx has generously been putting their hearts into helping these animals and offering a discounted welfare price list to all welfares in SA on an ongoing basis. Offering welfare up to 50% discount from the normal price.

Their continuous sponsorship with the AACL (Animal Anti Cruelty League) over the past four years has included the sponsoring of products such as CalmEze Plus for pets with anxiety and specifically during the recent thunderstorms and fireworks during festive seasons. This year they were able to do the same for the SPCA JHB, making that silver lining shine just a little bit brighter.

To date they have also donated over 300 boxes of Omeprazole towards the treatment of orphaned baby rhinos in the last year. Baby rhinos are often under severe stress and can quickly develop stomach ulcers as a result.

They also offer Omeprazole treatment at half price to all orphaned baby rhinos on an ongoing basis to assist with their treatment. The offer was extended to smaller welfares and veterinary practices that does spayathons and vaccination drives where they donated essential stock to treat approximately 2500 animals by vaccinating, deworming, treating, and sterilising them.

As a mother of two, I’ve often wondered if all parents have the same dread for the “can we have a puppy” moment that almost always follows with the pleading “puppy eyes” of a toddler staring back at you. Bringing home a new pet is exciting, sure, but what about the responsibilities? For kids it is all about the fun stuff and the excitement of the new family member, but for the adults in the home, it’s almost certain that you will be responsible for dealing with the notso-pleasant parts of this addition.

Gordon Finds a Home is an endearing educational book to teach children the necessities of bringing home a new pup. It’s written in a catchy poem that can be easily understood by children of any age.

My daughters aged 6 and 9 particularly enjoyed the rhyming words. Gordon and his human Lunathi explore all the important do’s and don’t’s of what pet ownership is all about. Key responsibilities such as providing your pet with the right foods, respectful and patiently disciplining of your pet, potty training, puppy school and vet visits are all covered in this little book.

The book educates children on the care of a new puppy but if you’re still in the process of deciding as a family, on whether this request makes its way to becoming a serious discussion, this book will help by reminding you of the time and money needed to look after a pet. It also covers some definite don’ts for owning a puppy, such as sitting on them or pulling at their ears. These points are all cleverly mentioned in this book and makes for a great discussion during or after the story is read on whether your little ones are in fact ready for a new pup or to talk about and understand what a new puppy needs to be happy and healthy, even if you already have him/her.

30

I am reminded of how handy this book would have been to have when my Godson was a little younger and used to tug at his grandma’s dog, unbeknownst to him that it wasn’t a moving teddy bear. A toddler or young child would benefit from this book by learning how to treat their pet with love and care. My girls had an opportunity to learn new things as well since their aunt just brought home a new puppy and as the star attraction in the family these days meant they could relate to Gordon. Even if you’re not the one getting a new pet this book would makes an excellent gift to a family that is homing a new pup in my opinion. Page 13 has a few

examples of how to read your pup’s body language, such as what they are trying to express with their ears down, show their teeth or what it means when the bow or wag their tail. The illustrations are well detailed with colour and specific to the page. I read this book to my family and even my husband and I learned something in the process.

There are so many animals that are surrendered to welfares due to poor care and neglect so this book would make a great addition to any library or school to educate more children on how to properly care for and love any animal.

Pet Prints approves this book with 5 stars

Besides being a social media and brand Influencer for over 300 brands to date since puppy days, Mr Miyagee is also quite the movie star. This buzzing little actor/model dog has kept himself busy, working hard filming a few international and local commercials as well as working alongside famous and furrmous actors and models on the runway.

If you are a famous pooch like Mr M, your birthday is simply never just a plain affair. It is a day filled with guests who like to spoil you and raising funds for animal welfare. Mr M loves giving back to charity and this year was no different, with Roar for Paws being the chosen charity.

Let’s fast track to Saturday, 12 November 2022. Mr Miyagee celebrated his birthday at the beautiful Petworld XXL store in Cape Gate Lifestyle Centre. This redcarpet event was attended by VVIP pet influencers, celebs and members of the public who joined in on the celebrations in true Agent 007 style!

When you celebrate a birthday, it is the norm for guests to spoil the birthday boy, right? However, Mr M used his birthday party to

spoil his canine guests and their humans in return. Each of the celebrity guests received treats and goodie bags to swoon over, courtesy of various premium pet accessory and food brands present on the day. And it didn’t stop there - the humans were all treated to a delicious cupcake upon arrival with the instore coffee and cooldrink bar keeping them hydrated. A special corner was decorated in very stylish mode for Agent 00DOG’s furry friends to quench their thirst (this was Mr Miyagee's favourite spot).

Boerewors rolls were sold to raise funds for Roar for Paws and Mr Miyagee donated products as the official Brand Ambassador for Ricky Pet Products.

The décor was true secret agent style, done by the famous Cape Town Balloon & Event Company, who takes pride in their eco-friendly decor. Mr M even made sure that guests could have their professional photograph taken by Dog Scapes Photography at the beautiful pop up photobooth sponsored by Studio Backdrops. Tafelberg Furnishers made sure Mr M and his guests could be photographed in true celeb style, being seated on a suede tub chair – pawfect indeed.

Agent 00DOG arrived in his very own personalised yellow VW Beetle – if he had the chance, and the space, he

would have arrived in a helicopter courtesy of Silver Cross Helicopters! Indeed, the element of surprise is always exciting! Mr M and his new sister, mademoiselle Lula Belle, arrived in style, dressed in the brandnew summer collection from Dog's Life who had their latest collection on display.

Mr M swopped outfits throughout the day for a Swarovski encrusted Red Dingo harness to match his sparkly personality.

The surprises didn't stop there – guests experienced the ultimate detective test. Every hour, a clue was hidden inside the store and if you have ever visited Cape Gate PetWorld XXL, you will know the place is huge. It proved to be real fun as guests went all out in search of PetWorld Vouchers, gifts, and special treats. Biggest spoil of the day? The Petworld team awarded Mr Miyagee his very own Petworld VIP status certificate, and yes, even a Star Wars trooper outfit to patrol store isles.

PETS NEED A

“ LUXURY TRAVEL WRITER, BRIAN BERKMAN, SEARCHES OUT THE FABULOUS AND OFTEN AFFORDABLE OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU AND YOUR PETS. JULIE, HIS RESCUED MIXED-BREED DOGGIE-DAUGHTER, INSISTS ON JOINING THEM.

Breaktoo! “

Brian Berkman says the Southern Peninsula offers many delights when travelling with your pets.

When the life of a dog, Just Nuisance, is so venerated that there is a statue erected of it, you can bet the town will be a pet-friendly one too.

Simonstown, a naval base for over two centuries, first for the British and still the base of the South African Navy, is a charming coastal town on the South Peninsula of the Cape.

Mariner Guesthouse and Villa is set on one of the highest roads, up against the mountain, which means it has endless views directly over the naval harbour and beyond.

Even propped up on the king-sized bed with the high thread count linen and comfy pillows, the view from the Luxury Studio through the all-glass balcony doors is bewitching. But venture onto the large balcony and is hard to decide which part of the vista to look at first.

The Luxury Studio is also Mariner’s petfriendly room and on arrival, expect to find a handy divided bowl with place for food and water, and paw-printed furniture covers if you’d like your pooch to sit with you on the easy chairs or the bed. We didn’t use these because when Julie has her bed from home, then that’s where she stays. And as we don’t

allow her on our bed, she doesn’t try to jump on beds elsewhere. But having the peace of mind afforded by special covers is a great value-add.

The Luxury Studio is marginally selfcatering which means there is a microwave, kitchen sink, espresso machine and kettle.

A stunning breakfast is included at Mariner which can be served on the balcony of your room or on the main area’s balcony. Pets are not permitted in the breakfast room. Yogurts and freshly cut fruit salad, breads and a basket of muffins are laid out to start, along with commercial cereals. There’s a granola which must not be missed, and the selection of hot breakfasts will impress in terms of their ingredient quality, skill of execution and also variety: roti, salmon and poached eggs; jaffel with curry mince; French Toast or the Mariner’s full offering - eggs, bacon, baked beans, tomatoes and mushrooms. Filter coffee is at hand and guests are invited to make their own plunger coffee.

40 JANUARY 2023 | PETPRINTS

Mariner is graded four-star, but rooms are luxuriously appointed. The Luxury Studio’s bathroom has travertine tiles, a corner tub, shower basin and loo and even a towel warmer. In the bedroom there are laminate floors with Oriental rugs and plenty of wardrobe space. Rooms are air-conditioned, have a ceiling fan and hotel-DSTV package. There is free wi-fi which is also available during power load shedding. You too will appreciate the outstanding service from the warmly welcoming and welltrained staff.

There is a garden from which a series of stairs take you down to the main road of Simonstown. It isn’t an effort to explore the restaurants below on foot as long as you don’t have to walk back up the steps again. It’s best to walk a bit further back along the road. Windmill Beach below the Simon’s Town Golf Course is a lovely, secluded, dog-friendly beach. Glencairn Beach,

Even propped up on the king-sized bed with the high thread count linen and comfy pillows, the view from the Luxury Studio through the all-glass balcony doors is bewitching.

a close by drive, is a dog free-running beach and people with dogs visit for this reason. There is also a safeswimming tidal pool.

Eat.Surf.Yoga. is a combo health-food spot, yoga and martial arts studio, and retailer of boho and surf clothing as well as scented oils and goodies close to Glencairn beach with an interesting vegan menu. Julie and many other dogs were welcome, even inside the restaurant.

Julie was warmly welcomed inside the Lighthouse Cafe in Simonstown’s main road too. We popped in for an after-lunch coffee and snack but will definitely return for a full meal. An enticing menu and chalkboard specials make this a very popular, high-quality restaurant.

Equally pet-friendly is Saveur Restaurant which is in Jubilee

Square. Don’t miss the sculpture of Just Nuisance by artist Jean Doyle overlooking the harbour. Just Nuisance, a Great Dane who was awarded the rank of Able Seaman by the Navy, was much loved by sailors. There is an exhibition dedicated to him at the Simonstown Museum. The town celebrates Just Nuisance’s birthday annually on the first weekend of April when people and their dogs come from near and far for a dog walk parade accompanied by the South African Navy Band.

Expect tiptop service and quality food at Saveur. Julie was even welcome to sit under our table inside the restaurant and was sure to catch any errant pieces of food that missed the napkin.

Brian Berkman says Cottage 1685 at Boschendal might be the most special place you and your friends spend time at with your pets.

You get pet-friendly and then you get Boschendal. Redefining what travel with your four-legged friends can be, Boschendal Estate is so welcoming of onleash pets, that the well-provisioned Farm Shop has an extensive range of pet snacks on offer. You are also most welcome to have your pets eat with you in the outside seating areas of the restaurants as well as Boschendal’s rightly famous picnic area.

accommodation to add to its already supremely popular Trout Cottage. Cottage 1685 – 1685 referring to the year that the main gabled farmhouse was built - is since the installation of a vast perimeter fence also pet-friendly.

The cottage can accommodate up to 10 people and comes with the hospitality team of Maxwells Sanfrancisco and Anzel Scholtz, who might well have run the Presidential Estate or Royal family homes based on their charm and elegance of approach.

To call Maxwells a butler might suggest pomposity or arrogance where he has none. But you will be hard-pressed to find staff more attentive and attuned to the needs of you and your party. Certainly, this is a luxury offering but if you fully occupy the house and adjacent accommodation, it represents good value for money.

As a historical building completed in 1902, it has some quirks, like the

peacock-wallpapered bathroom being accessed from the uncovered courtyard with no en-suite bathrooms in the main house, but this is a very minor drawback compared to the exquisite accommodation on offer.

The main bedroom has an elegant four-poster carved timber bed and a yellowwood closet that might even have belonged to the home’s original inhabitants. While there is important and antique furniture throughout the house, it does not feel precious in the sense that it should not be enjoyed. In fact, the living room couch is shouting to be laid on with feet propped up on the side in front of the fireplace and cinematic sized TV. The dining room with its 10-seater polished timber table is pure elegance and for other dining options, consider the deep front verandah at the back, the little covered stoep in the shadow of the Simonsberg and under the giant oak tree in the garden.

42 JANUARY 2023 | PETPRINTS

The main bedroom has an elegant four-poster carved timber bed and a yellowwood closet that might even have belonged to the home’s original inhabitants.

This is a home designed for sumptuous entertaining. The kitchen has Smeg appliances with a 90cm cooker, a retrostyled fridge, kettle, and toaster and possibly even the dishwasher may be Smeg too.

The front garden seems to be hectares large. This is the only place that we have visited with Julie where we had no concern if we didn’t see her every few minutes. And to see her charging around the garden with such glee trying to chase the squirrels or the guineafowls gave us pleasure too. There was a group of peacocks, called an ostentation for good reason, just outside the back fence. What a magnificent sight to behold. We had front-row seats for an hour or so of their dramatic plumage show. What a privilege to see.

Cottage 1685 will exceed your expectations. (Did I mention the large eco pool and loungers?) More than a few kilometers away from the main Boschendal Werf, it will be beneficial to have your own vehicle, but bicycles are provided, and a minibus will transport you on request.

Breakfast is available, served in the cottage where a chef joins the team to prepare your hot breakfast to order or it can be served at The Werf restaurant in the main Boschendal area. As wonderful as the privacy and luxury of staying in Cottage 1685 are, you will want to spend time at the Farm Shop, the wine-tasting area and the two restaurants, The Deli and The Werf. There is also an art exhibition in association with the Norval Foundation in the original Boschendal Manor House.

Boschendal has an excellent online food store – deliveries can be made to your accommodation on the farm and even to your home. There is a homeware store too. Boschendal picnics are legendary for good reason. With live music from the bandstand and sitting against trees or on the comfy backrests they provide on the lawns, it is a wonderful way to spend a weekend day. But if your pooch associates food served at ground level to be for them, like Julie, it is best to be sure they don’t eat your picnic goodies or anyone else’s for that matter. Poor Julie had to be tethered to a nearby tree while we feasted on our picnic. We were quickly forgiven when we returned to the cottage, and she had free run again.

OVER THE RAINBOW BRIDGE NEW BEGINNINGS

It’s one of the most emotional times any pet parent can experience: crossing the Rainbow Bridge. But, as painful as grief is and as much as we wish it would go away, when it does lift, we can sometimes feel worse – as if, by not being so sad, we are forgetting our loved one, losing the connection, or not honouring them enough. Grief can become so entangled with love that it starts to feel as if one cannot exist without the other. But, as has been said in previous columns, your love for and good memories of your loved one do not live within your pain and grief. Feeling better does not mean that you are getting over them; it means you are becoming better at managing the pain and at accepting a new way of living with a memory instead of their physical presence.

Our animal family members bring boundless joy and unconditional love, and are an integral part of our lives. Sadly, it’s an inescapable reality that, one day, we will have to bid them farewell. This is an incredibly hard process, made worse by not knowing what to expect. This regular column aims to demystify it in order to help you when the time comes for them to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

sadness, provide a friend for existing pets, and offer an animal a home; others prefer to wait a week, a month, or a year, or simply until the moment they feel ready or an animal finds its way to them. For many of us, another pet helps us by giving us something to look forward to and a new focus for the love we have to lavish on our animal family members.

It’s best not to give the new one the same name, look for an identical-looking animal, or keep trying to find one ‘just like the one that passed’ because that’s impossible - each animal is unique, with its own personality and quirks. Cherish how special the pet who has passed is, and celebrate the differences in the new one.

The general consensus is that you should get a new pet once you’ve worked

Consider everyone

Pets are family, so, of course, the whole family needs to be part of the decision to get a new one. Everyone in the home should have a say – their feelings and needs must be taken into account and, if everyone hasn’t worked through their grief and isn’t on board with a new pet, wait until they are. Children in particular may be struggling both with the grief and with a feeling of disloyalty towards the late pet, and might not always show it. Take the time to allow everyone to share their thoughts and involve them in the decision making. This way, you avoid any resentment and pave the way for a happy change.

Existing pets should have an ‘input’ too. They can’t say how they’re feeling in words but,

Don’t be tempted to get a new animal just because the existing one is sad and you think they want company – they may need time to grieve too, plus they’re missing that friend, not a friend, so simply trying to push another one on them could upset them. Also consider that, if your pet is a senior, they might not want another animal around, particularly a very young one which may be too much for them. If you’re unsure, it may help to call in the help of an animal behaviourist. This is particularly helpful if your pets were together for a long time and had a strong bond, but is always a good idea when introducing new animals to existing ones. We recommend a COAPE-certified behaviourist, as they adhere to gentle, positive methods.

Foster or volunteer

If you’re still unsure about a forever pet, consider fostering for a reputable animal welfare organisation (AWO). You temporarily offer a home to an animal while it waits to be adopted, giving you the chance to have a pet around while also helping an animal in need. You can specify what kind of animal you’d like to foster, age, sex, size, etcetera and go from there. Some AWOs also have a ‘foster to adopt’ option where you take an animal you’d like to adopt with the understanding that, if it doesn’t work out, that animal will still be up for adoption but, if it does, you have first option to adopt. This way, there is less pressure on you and no unrealistic expectations have been created for the AWO (which could end up leading to the animal never being adopted because it was removed from the adoption list).

Still not ready to bring one home but miss being around animals? Many animal shelters have programmes for volunteers to spend time with their animals. Find out if they need dog walkers, people to groom, socialise, train, and cuddle animals, adoption day helpers, etcetera. Millions of animals all over South Africa need homes; by reaching out in this way, you’ll ease the ache in your heart and make a big difference to them. And, who knows, you may just meet the new furry, feathered, or scaled love of your life…

Safety note

If your previous pet died of a contagious illness, you may need to wait on getting a new one. Some diseases can remain in the environment for some time afterwards, which places new animals at risk, particularly unvaccinated young ones like pups and kittens. This is particularly true for potentially fatal viruses like canine parvovirus (parvo), which can survive in the soil for 6 months or more, and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) virus, which has been found to survive up to 7 weeks on dry surfaces, including carpet. Parasites like giardia, coccidia, and intestinal worms can also survive a very long time in the environment so watch out for these too. Your veterinarian will be able to advise you on what you can do to decontaminate your home and when it is safe to get a new pet.

Getting a new family member requires serious thought and, when we feel emotional, it can be challenging to be objective and we may adopt the first animal that tugs at our heart strings. In many cases, this may be exactly the right thing to do, and in others it may not – it’s entirely up to you. Once you’ve decided it’s time to get a new pet, look to your future with them with joy in your heart.

Q: Dear Dr Travis, I’m curious to know if you can be allergic to one cat but not the other? I seem to have more sinus issues when my one cat cuddles with me.

A: When a person is allergic to a cat, it is because their immune system is reacting inappropriately to proteins that are released in a cat’s skin cells, saliva and urine. People often blame cat fur for the allergy, and it’s understandable why. The proteins causing the allergy stick to fur, and can be spread around the cat’s environment as they shed. By this logic, the more a cat sheds, the more allergen will be present in the environment. Opinions regarding the allergenicity of short haired versus long haired cats differ depending on who you ask, but even hairless cat breeds can trigger allergies in susceptible people.

While there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic cat, not all cats produce the same amount of these proteins. In the case of the question, it’s possible that the one cat has more allergens in their fur and dander than the other, or one cat simply sheds more.

Q: Hi Doctor Travis, why can’t dogs have chocolate? I’ve given my dog small pieces in the past and he’s fine.

A: Chocolate isn’t good for dogs because the cocoa beans that it is made of contain theobromine and caffeine. Like any toxic substance, the effects that these chemicals have on the body depend on the dose that was ingested. Low doses are likely to not have much effect, but can cause nausea and diarrhoea. At higher doses, however, more alarming signs such as hyperexcitability, muscle tremors, panting, incoordination and (in severe cases) seizures can occur. These chemical compounds also have an excitable effect on the heart, increasing heart rate and possibly causing disruptions in the rhythm of the heartbeat. As can be expected, the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine and caffeine it will contain. This means that white or milk chocolate is less likely to cause symptoms of poisoning than dark chocolate. That said, there is no chocolate that can be considered safe for dogs!

Ask the Vet Q&A

Q: Hi Dr Travis, my dog has a limp every now and again. She’s active and loves walks, and we generally have very few issues with her. The limp is from her left hind leg and occurs mostly in the morning before walks. Should I be concerned? Is she maybe just stiff from sleeping funny?

A: Intermittent limping can sometimes be a cause for concern, and the answer to this question depends on the age of the dog as well as her breed. In a younger dog I would be worried about a developmental issue such as hip or elbow dysplasia, whereas in an older dog I would be concerned about a degenerative disease such as arthritis. Either way, I would recommend that your dog sees a vet because these conditions require treatment to make the patient more comfortable and, more importantly, reduce the rate at which the condition worsens.

Of course, this could still be something benign like a strained muscle or tendon, so radiographs of the affected limb might be needed to see for sure. If the limping continues to be a problem, becomes more frequent or worsens, an examination with your vet is advised.

Q: Hi Doctor, I have a 10 year old sausage dog-cross who keeps rubbing his bum on the tiles. I do deworm him. Why would he still be doing this and should I worry about it?

A: The behavior where a dog (or cat) rubs their bums along the floor is called scooting, and is an indication of inflammation of the “under-tail” area of the patient. Yes, worms are a major cause of scooting, but they aren’t always to blame. Anal sac problems are commonly seen in dogs (uncommonly in cats), and can also cause the patient to scoot. Inflammation of the skin in that area due to allergies can do this too.

I would recommend that the patient is seen by your local vet. Anal sac issues are very uncomfortable for the patient, and require the anal sac to be manually squeezed out. If this isn’t done, not only would it cause pain, but longstanding conditions can become infected and cause abscesses to form in the area.

46 JANUARY 2023 | PETPRINTS

Q: Dear Dr Travis, how can I protect my dog from the heatwaves we’re expecting this summer and can I use human sunscreen on him when we go out to the beach?

A: This is a very important question because overheating can and does kill dogs every summer in South Africa. This is particularly true for brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs, as they battle to regulate their body temperature through panting. Overheating can happen suddenly and without warning, and can have fatal consequences.

The best advice would be to keep your pets out of the sun during the heat of the day (between 10am and 4pm) and try to keep activities such as walking or playing to the mornings or evenings. If you really have to take your dog out in the warmest part of the day, be sure to have enough water to keep them hydrated. If you’re at the beach, allowing them to have a supervised dip in the water will also help to keep them cool. Stay off hot roads and gravel. If you can’t hold your hand on the surface comfortably, then your dog shouldn’t be walking there.

Skin cancer is a fairly common (and often difficult to treat) issue in dogs, particularly those with pale skin and short hair. The best prevention is to avoid prolonged sun exposure, but with pets this is easier said than done. Sunblock can help, but human formulations aren’t recommended in pets because they can cause adverse effects if ingested. In particular, try to avoid any sunblock that contains zinc oxide, as this can cause nasty diarrhoea and vomiting if too much is swallowed. Most vet shops will have sunblock for sale that has been approved for use in dogs. Of course, sunblock will only work if it stays on the skin, so try to distract your dog after application so they don’t lick it right off.

One last additional note that isn’t quite related to the question: if you’re taking your dogs to the beach, keep an eye that they don’t eat any kelp as this is a very common cause of intestinal blockage that usually requires surgery to fix.

If you would like to ask Dr Travis a question, please send an email to mail@petprints.co.za

Please include as much information in the email as possible.

Adopt a

German Shorthaired Pointer

The German Shorthaired Pointer is a medium-sized, clean-cut dog with the striking outline and musculature of an athlete.

At 55-60cm tall and weighing 20-35kg, this is the ideal size for a great running or cycling companion, yet still small enough to fit easily into the average household. This handsome dog has a sleek coat that comes in variations of solid liver (a reddish brown), liver and white, black, black and white, black roan (an even mix of colours) and liver roan, and can include ticking and patches. The wash and wear coat is easy to care for, but the floppy ears need to be checked regularly.

The most important thing to remember about Pointers is that they were bred to be hunters. This implies a variety of characteristics that must be taken into consideration in the choice to share your life with a GSP.

The first of these is their prey drive. Although GSPs are generally social and friendly dogs, most of them will see cats and other small furry animals (including small dogs) or livestock as prey and it is essential to teach them the difference between legitimate prey and animals that are off limits.

Secondly, this is a high-energy dog that was bred to spend the entire day out in the fields tracking, pointing and hunting prey. If you can

satisfy their appetite for adventure, they will inspire you to explore new frontiers with their goofy lust for life and you will have a tranquil, friendly dog at home. They make wonderful road trip companions, hiking or MTB trail dogs (if they have a solid recall), as well as excellent sporting dogs that excel at agility and flyball, tracking and field trials. But if a walk around the block is your idea of exercise, your Pointer is likely to succumb to barking, hyperactivity and destructive chewing from living too confined a life.

Obedience training is a must for instilling self-discipline and control, but Pointers don’t obey blindly. Although they can become focused when required to do so, they are easily distracted by scents and thoughts of prey. Above all, they are independent thinkers. Eager to please, they will form a strong bond with you if you make training fun and positive and offer them consistent, patient leadership. But they are easily bored, so it may be a challenge to keep them focused during an entire training session while all the other breeds happily keep repeating the same command. Counter this by bringing some imagination into your everyday training at home – hide their food in the garden and tell them to go and find it, or play hide and seek with the whole family while out on a walk.

Socialisation is important to prevent shyness

towards strangers and dominant behaviour towards other dogs. They are loving, affectionate family dogs who do well with children, but because they can be very lively and boisterous, they should be watched around toddlers. Being very alert, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a good watchdog – but too friendly to be really any good at protection.

German Shorthaired Pointers have been known to live beyond 16 years, although most will reach about 12. They are generally sound, but may be prone to specific health issues: hip and elbow dysplasia, eye conditions, hypothyroidism, Von Willebrand’s Disease, certain heart diseases and bloat, a lifethreatening condition about which owners should make sure to educate themselves.

If you are the right person for a GSP, you’re in for a treat.

If you are interested in adopting please contact us on gsprescuesa@gmail.com with any questions or to request an adoption application form.

An adoption fee of R1 900 per dog enable us place dogs that are sterilised, micro chipped, vaccinated (including kennel cough), and dewormed.
