more, and this led me to make another big journey back to Pretoria to further my studies. Cape Town is still home, so after two years I returned and joined the Animal Anti-Cruelty League family. In the past, I had entertained the thought of working in welfare, but I was very satisfied with my work at TAH and so never followed through on the idea. After the upheaval of moving back from Pretoria, it was the perfect opportunity to jump into the deep end again and find out if welfare work would be a good fit (you never know until you try, right?). I am so glad that I did. My time at the AACL has really opened my eyes as well as my heart.
T
It is a huge change, transitioning from private practice to welfare. As a Vet, it can be frustrating at times, not having all the facilities and equipment that you would love to use, but the reality is that we are not subsidised in any way, so everything we have is thanks to donations and fundraisers – in other words, money is tight. Despite that, we are constantly working to make improvements and provide the best possible care. It is so satisfying to be able use the skills that I have acquired over the years, and help people and pets that otherwise would not have had that access. We are able to assist the poorest of the poor, providing their fluffy family members with vaccinations, sterilisations, medical/surgical care, and when necessary, help their final transitions so they can say goodbye with respect and dignity. We educate the public on animal care, take in strays to shelter and feed, and help find forever homes. It is a rollercoaster of cuteness and cuddles and heartbreak and unadulterated love.
ell us about yourself?” My mind immediately goes blank and I forget my own name. The first thing that pops into my head is usually animal lover, followed by crazy cat lady, introvert, nerd, and artist.
According to my mum I decided that I wanted to be a vet when I was five – my dolls were game rangers, my soft toys were part of a farmyard, and I spent all my free time with the family dogs. I looked at other options over the years, but my heart always called me back to veterinary science. I took the long route via an honours degree in Zoology before I was accepted to the veterinary course at the University of Pretoria. After qualifying as a Vet, I spent four years working for the National Department of Agriculture, paying off my bursary, and learning invaluable skills (most significant of all, in my opinion – learning how to work with humans, instead of just animals!).
Speaking of love, the first thing I do when I get home is cuddle my cats (I do not really have a choice – they make demands, and are definitely the bosses of me). Our trio of murder-mitten-wearing gangsters include – Chicken, who was a stray that I nursed after she had been kicked in the head as a tiny kitten (she is brain-damaged as a result, but lives a charmed life); Greebo, a giant orange that loves everyone – he will literally roll over on his back for belly rubs when strangers come in the front door; and George, who is actually a girl, but with the most magnificent moustache I have ever seen on a cat or human. My partner Ettienne gets his cuddle after this – he knows where he stands in the order of things!
I then jumped in the deep end of clinical Veterinary work, and started working at Tygerberg Animal Hospital in Cape Town. Those were some of the most educational and rewarding years of my vet career – learning how to deal with every emergency under the moon (I did three years of night shifts before becoming a “daywalker”), working up complicated medical cases with the mentorship of some of the cleverest people I have ever known, finding my surgical fingers and discovering how much I love being in theatre. I learned how to handle a hospital full of patients while keeping in mind the fact that each and every one of them is tethered to a home full of hearts, missing and worrying about them. My love of surgery made my brain itchy – I wanted to learn
Being a Vet can be physically and emotionally draining, so I try to maintain a balance so that life is not all about work. I love to oil paint and draw, spend time in nature whether gardening or walks on the beach/in the mountains, and have recently discovered an obsession with doing puzzles. These all recharge my batteries so that I can give my all when your pets come in.

Elle’s journey into the world of DIY and pet ownership is a heartwarming tale of love, companionship, and creative self-expression. Ten years ago, she embarked on her solo living adventure, complete with a pet-friendly space that had a garden in need of some DIY and home improvement projects. Her decision to bring Jimmy and Sid into her life wasn’t just about companionship but also about having dedicated co-workers in her DIY escapades. These two little Morkies have been there from the very beginning, providing support, love, and joy to Elle’s life and creative endeavors.
Meet Jimmy and Sid
Jimmy and Sid, the stars of Elle’s Instagram feed, are not your average dogs. They belong to the Morkie breed, a delightful mix of Yorkshire Terrier and Maltese. Elle’s choice of Morkies was a well-thought-out decision, considering her husband (then boyfriend’s) allergies. But it wasn’t just about their hypoallergenic qualities; it was also the charm and personality of this breed that captured Elle’s heart. Jimmy, the larger of the two brothers, is reserved and has an almost serious demeanor, which earned him the name “Jimmy,” reminiscent of an old gentleman. Sid, on the other hand, is the smaller and more energetic sibling, boasting a distinctive “Mohawk” on his head. Named after the famous punk rock musician Sid Vicious, his spunky personality matches his namesake.
Why Morkies?
Advice for building a loving connection with pets is rooted in consistent training, positive reinforcement, quality time spent playing, cuddling, and engaging in activities that the dogs enjoy. 10
For those considering Morkies as potential pets, Elle offers some valuable advice. Morkies are a unique breed known for their delightful personalities and low allergen levels. Elle highlights the importance of understanding their traits, needs, and potential for excessive barking. Daily walks, ample playtime, and interactive toys can help keep these spirited companions content.

DIY for Dogs
Elle’s passion for DIY extends to her four-legged friends. She has crafted numerous DIY projects for Jimmy and Sid over the years. One of her first projects was a basic dog kennel made from pallets. Since then, she has upgraded their accommodations to a modern wooden kennel with a faux grass roof, adding a creative touch to their living space. From dog beds to leash hangers, Elle’s creativity knows no bounds when it comes to enhancing her pets’ lives.
The Impact of Dogs on Personal and Creative Journey
family moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town. To keep the dogs calm during the long drive, they gave them calming pills hidden in treats. However, a funny mishap occurred when Jimmy refused his treat, allowing Sid to enjoy a double dose. The result was a hilarious sight of Sid stumbling and sleeping through most of the journey, making for an unforgettable memory.
Building a Strong Bond with Pets
Elle’s followers admire the strong bond she shares with her dogs. Her advice for building a loving connection with pets is rooted in consistent training, positive reinforcement,
Distinctive Traits and Behaviours
Jimmy and Sid have their unique quirks and behaviours that endear them to Elle and her followers. Sid is a cuddler, always seeking affection, and has a charming trick of leaning back on his hind legs to request attention. He even enjoys being held and rocked like a baby. Jimmy, in contrast, is more stoic, sitting by your feet and tilting his head for pets. He loves belly rubs but dislikes being held. Their distinct personalities make for a dynamic and entertaining duo.
Sid + Jimmy
Dogs have an incredible way of enriching our lives, and Elle’s journey with Jimmy and Sid is no exception. Besides the responsibilities of pet ownership, they’ve taught her valuable life lessons in responsibility, patience, and selflessness. Her dogs are not just companions;

they’re an integral part of her life, both personally and creatively.
Childhood Companions
Elle’s love for dogs date back to her childhood when she had a fluffy crossbreed between a toy-pom and Maltese named Ruffles. Ruffles shared her life from the age of 12 to 28, leaving a lasting impression and a deep appreciation for the special place dogs hold in our hearts.

Top Tips Destressing for
your dog
We all know what stress is and how it affects us and those around us. The slow pace of Covid and the subsequent couple of years seems to be a thing of the past and life is back to normal and moving at a faster pace than ever before. Work is demanding, social events are in full swing, and it feels like there is never enough time in the day to get things done. To deal with these stressors, people may vent to a friend, have a glass of wine or go for a jog. What we all too often forget is that our dogs can feel or become stressed as well. Moving, changing jobs or having a baby are major moments in our dog’s lives, not just our own, so in times like these we need to pay extra attention to see if our furry friends are showing signs of stress.
14
NOVEMBER 2023 | PETPRINTS
Stress represents itself very differently in pets than in humans and since they cannot verbalise when they are feeling stressed, we are left to look for subtle signs and changes in our pet’s behaviour. Signs to look out for are pacing, shaking, excessive barking, destructive behaviour, licking, panting and hiding. So, while our pets may not be able to sit down with us and decompress with a G&T, there are a few things we can do to help them relieve their stress.
Tips
•Self-care
Have you ever noticed that after having an especially heated phone conversation or maybe even a disagreement with your partner that your pet is sitting in a corner shaking or hiding under the bed? Our pets might not understand what is going on but they can pick up on the energy. So if you are coming home highly strung and anxious, chances are your pet will start acting that way as well. Practicing some mindful selfcare and relaxation techniques are essential to reducing life’s everyday stressors because you can’t take care of your pets, if you don’t take care of yourself first.
• Exercise
your dog’s brain to produce and release endorphins. Endorphins make your dog feel euphoric, calm and lower anxiety and stress. Remember, you don’t have to go on a 5km run for your dog to produce endorphins. Mental stimulation in the form of enrichment games, toys etc. do the exact same thing. According to experts a 20 minute ‘sniffari’ is equal to an hours walk!
• Prevention
If your dog’s stressors are environmental (loud noises, large crowds, other dogs), then simply avoid these situations all together. If you cannot avert the situation such as a drive in the car to the vet, then give your dog something else to think about. Just like you would give a child a lollipop when getting an injection, providing your dog with high value treats when meeting a new person or a durable chew while driving in the car will distract your pet and help ease their stress and anxiety.
• Touch
The act of touch can be incredibly soothing for both you and your pet. It not only strengthens your bond, but it lowers the heart rate and releases oxytocin, a feel-good hormone. There are various ways you can use physical touch to calm your dog. If your doggo is open to cuddling this is a great way for them to feel safe and secure wrapped in your arms, to help release tension and relax their muscles you can give your dog a massage and then something as simple as intentional petting can reduce feelings of anxiety. Long, slow gentle strokes from the head to the tail will have them in a blissful state of relaxation in no time. It’s important to remember that every dog is different and they have their own preferences when it comes to being touched. Some may not like their heads or paws touched due to a past trauma so touching them there would have the opposite effect and actually increase their stress levels.
Bryony Van Niekerk Mom of dogs; slave to cats. An environmentalist who loves travelling, baking and going on adventures with her dogs, Linc and Oliver. To be a part of the chaos, follow @misadventures_of_ollie
• A safe space
If your pet is highly anxious, having a safe space for them to retreat to when things are overwhelming is a must. See where they naturally gravitate to (under the bed, in a cupboard) and create a zone for them. Chances are it will be a covered, dark corner, so kit it out with a nice bed and comfy blanket and allow them to decompress in their own time. For my cats, this is my cupboard. I have lost a few precious shelves to cat beds, but I know when they are scared, this is where I can find them.
• Calming therapies
Fun fact: I am a firm believer in alternative therapies and use them on a daily basis for my pets. Methods you can employ to help calm your pets using in a natural holistic way are playing soothing music/white noise (there are actual playlists designed just for dogs), aromatherapy, calming supplements, even acupuncture. A lot of essential oils are harmful/toxic to pets so please do your research thoroughly and consult with your vet before using any other treatments, especially if your pet is on prescription medication.
You are all probably tired of me going on about physical and mental exercise, but this the basis to a happy, healthy dog and can help prevent so many unwanted behaviours. Just like in humans, exercise triggers

NOVEMBER 2023 | PETPRINTS
No work. All play! Boundless amounts of energy bouncing around your house destroying any slipper, kitchen towel, or piece of furniture those little jaws can wrap around. You catch a glimpse of the expensive white paper rolling off the roll as your new bundle of joy leaps out of the bathroom and ducks behind the ottoman. You rush out to the living room already calling your puppy’s name on the verge of scolding for wasting the two-ply toilet paper, but as you get closer you notice your pupper lying upside down wrapped in sheets of white and sleeping its little heart out. You immediately whip out your phone before the wave of cuteness leaves you paralyzed. Let’s face it, at the end of the day you simply can’t be mad at these fluffy creatures for adventuring and experiencing life as it is all new to them. Smells, textures, sounds, and even tastes. They are learning every day about what it is to live in our world and their first instinct is to chew and chomp – who are we to take that away from them?
BY ESTASCHIA COSSADIANOS xxxA big factor for me when I just got Echo was what I was going to do with her while at work. This was a few months into covid before everything got shut down so working in an office 5 days a week was a reality for me. I was lucky enough to have an amazing team and boss who arranged for me to let Echo be at the office if I could still carry out my daily projects and deadlines. I was assured that it wouldn’t be an issue and I even printed out a little schedule for her dividing my break times up for her play time and potty breaks. Are you pointing and laughing at me? I sure am at young Estaschia thinking it would be that simple. Echo being a Bernese Mountain Dog makes things a little harder than usual seeing as they are also called “velcro” dogs for a good reason, they are clingy! Even though Echo showed us just how independent she was since we got her, that puppy wanted to be with mum and cried her lungs out even though she was right beside me, sectioned off with toys and sustenance. So, she lasted in the office for a good 16
40-min before I had to take her back home and boy did I cry. I called my husband as I refused to leave this sweet angel alone even for a second. He made some calls and a good friend of ours was able to take care of her during the day while we were working hard for her bougee lifestyle. Crisis averted. The life of a puppy consists of very basic needs, such as sleep, potty break, utter chaos a.k.a playtime and Repeat. You do feed them three times a day but let’s face it, the time that flies between meals are so quick you forget they happened due to cleaning up and just making sure wherever they fall asleep they do not wake up or else the chaos will commence. Bernese Mountain Dogs are extremely sociable giants and want to adventure the life around them and get to know nature and everything that comes with it. Desensitizing a pupper is such a crucial timeframe that you need to work into because you want to get them used to the world but also not scare them. NOVEMBER 2023 | PETPRINTS
Echo wanted to be friends with everything, she came across I did some research and found a solution I thought would be very beneficial not only for her, but for me as a dog mum. Drum roll please: Dog Daycare! Okay, okay, I hear you. There are many risks with a dog daycare and yes, in some cases it isn’t the right call depending on your dog’s nature and personality. The area in which we live had a few choices for me to choose from and after visiting, asking questions, and getting Echo all vaccinated adding kennel cough to the mix, I made my choice. I chose to go with a dog day care that was very transparent from the getgo. They showed me their cleaning process, the safe products they use to make sure everything is as it should be to clean poop and urine to keep bacteria at bay. They explained what happens in specific situations and what their emergency plans are if anything ever had to happen, as well as the vet they go to if a dog got injured. I was also very impressed with the entire set up of the school as I haven’t come across a day care that looked quite like they did. First off, this school was designed with dogs in mind by a certified behaviourist who understood that a free for all play style won’t work for all dogs. Instead, she created spacious play pens that could accommodate many dogs while they played. There were all kinds of play pens from a sandpit with a jungle gym, one that had a splash pool and sprinklers, a sick bay, puppy bay and a few others so dogs are exposed to various surroundings and aren’t stuck in the same environment each time. With this, the dogs are also assessed daily to see what mood they are in, and they are divided into play groups from there because as we know, not all dogs want to play constantly. Some just want to chill and sniff some butts
while others want to run and jump until their legs fall off. This was the selling point for me. Echo would be able to play with dogs who wanted to play and not annoy another canine who just wanted to sunbathe. Day care helped me with Echo by exposing her to a wide variety of dogs, enrichments and of course people. This assisted with her desensitization and made sure she got the exercise she needed as well as allowed her to play all day! Getting images of Echo while at day care was probably the same as a human mom receiving a drawing that her kid did at school. It warmed my heart to see her with friends and I could tell she was abundantly happy. I am always on the side of sending your puppy or dog to a day care if you acknowledge your dog’s personality and find a school in which they will thrive and treat them the way they deserve. Dig deeper than the surface and make sure they are transparent before enrolling your dog! They will be taking care of your precious baby and you need to know without a shadow of a doubt that they have your pupper’s best interests at heart. Your pup or doggo shouldn’t be left alone waiting for you to get home all tired. Give them that release of energy and satisfaction they crave of playing with friends. This eliminates any destructive tendencies that might be caused by a dog who is bored at home alone – you can’t blame a sweet soul who makes you its life if you leave it alone for hours to entertain itself. A kong or rope toy will only work for so long, dear parental. 17

loneliest lion
World’s , who fell silent after five years in abandoned Armenian zoo, takes “heroic” first steps in South African sanctuary. His legs wobbling and due to malnutrition and a lifetime of no exercise, Ruben the loneliest lion in the world drove himself forward, stepping from his travel crate into the home of his ancestors. Thanks to an epic journey across the world organised by Animals Defenders International (ADI) and Qatar Airways Cargo, Ruben’s rehabilitation at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary (ADIWS) in Free State, South Africa has begun. Ruben was the only animal left in a private zoo in Armenia after it closed. All the other animals were relocated, but there was no room for Ruben and he was left behind in a tiny concrete cell for five long years, his plaintive roars unanswered. Now, thanks to ADI and a flight provided by Qatar Airways Cargo, 15-year-old Ruben has made the 5,200-mile journey from Armenia to the ADIWS in Free State, South Africa, where he is hearing lion voices again after years of loneliness. Ruben has already started to get his roar back, his morning calls getting steadily louder as he regains his confidence. ADI President Jan Creamer said: “Lions are the most sociable of the big cats, living in family prides in the wild. So it must have been devastating for Ruben to have no contact or communication with other lions.
Seeing him walk on grass for the first time, hearing the voices of his own kind, with the African sun on his back, brought us all to tears.” Ruben’s happy ending was at risk when ADI could not find a suitable flight for him out of Armenia. Then Qatar Airways Cargo ‘WeQare’ charity initiative stepped in, moving a larger aircraft with hold doors big enough for Ruben’s crate into the scheduled passenger route out of Yerevan. Qatar even put on an

air-conditioned truck to move him between aircraft at Doha. ADI’s President and Vice President, Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips, accompanied the lion. Elisabeth Oudkerk, SVP Cargo Sales & Network Planning at Qatar Airways Cargo said: “When Animal Defenders International approached us and explained the sad story of Ruben, the lonely lion, we immediately knew we had to help them. There are a lot of logistics involved in moving animals like Ruben; from the logistics at the airports involved, the process for loading and unloading the animals from the aircraft, to ensuring the correct cages and wellbeing of the animals are in place. It takes a lot of effort from our team to organise such transport - but it is something we are all collectively very proud to be a part of, knowing we helped give back to our planet.” “We are committed to preserving wildlife and endangered species, that is why we launched our WeQare Chapter 2 initiative: ‘Rewild the Planet’ back in 2020. We pledged to return wildlife and endangered species back to their natural habitat, free of charge and we will continue to do so.” Jan Creamer: “Ruben was really in trouble until Qatar Airways Cargo stepped up. ADI had been funding his care in Armenia since December and when we could find no flights for him we feared he could be stuck there.”
The old warrior determined to walk again 18

Years of severe confinement and malnutrition have left the battered old lion with difficulty walking, his hind legs wobbling and buckling beneath him. On arrival, Ruben was sedated and examined by leading big cat veterinarian Dr Peter Caldwell at Old Chapel Veterinary Clinic, Pretoria, who has begun a course of treatment. A habitat has been specially designed at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary with ramps up to platforms and guard rails with a long recuperation expected. However, Ruben’s resilience has stunned everyone at the sanctuary with his determination and response to his new life. His legs wobbling, he strode from his travel crate and immediately began playing with a giant catnip punchbag – his first toy. Jan Creamer: “His whole demeanour has transformed, his face is relaxed and no longer fearful. His determination to walk is inspiring. If he stumbles or falls he just picks himself up and keeps going. He is nothing short of heroic. Incredibly, in just a few days his movement is already improving. We know this will be a long road and will require
ongoing veterinary treatment but the start of his new life could not have been better.”
investigation of animal circuses, nearly 50 countries have banned the use of animals in circuses.
ADI is appealing for donations for Ruben’s ongoing care, to ensure he has the same wonderful life other rescued lions and tigers enjoy at ADIWS – the 455 acre sanctuary is home to 32 rescued lions and tigers. To help this magnificent old lion enjoy his second chance at life in peace and companionship, donations can be made at: adiwildlifesanctuary.org.za Hashtag: #HelpRubenRoar

FASCINATING THE SCIENTIFIC NAME FOR KILLER WHALES IS ORCINUS ORCA.
“Orcas” and “killer whales” both refer to the same species of marine mammals. “Orcas” is a more commonly used term, while “killer whales” is another common name for the same species. Orcas were given the name ‘killer whale” by ancient sailors’ observations of groups of orcas hunting and feeding on other animals, such as whales and seals.
waters, although they prefer cooler waters and often migrate seasonally to find food.
Orcas are highly intelligent animals with complex communication systems. Their brains are four times larger than those of humans, making them one of the smartest animals on Earth. They use a combination of clicks, whistles, pulses, and body movements to communicate with each other.
The Latin name of the Orca, Orcinus orca, also reflects this observation of orcas feeding on large whales.
Killer whales are also highly social animals that live in complex societies with their own social hierarchies.
In modern times, many conservationists and scientists prefer to use the name “Orca” to refer to these animals, as it is a more accurate reflection of their true taxonomic classification and helps avoid misunderstandings about their behaviour.
Orcas live in tight-knit family groups called pods.
Killer whales belong to the family Delphinidae, which is commonly referred to as the oceanic dolphin family. This family includes various species of dolphins, including the killer whale, making them a type of dolphin, despite their distinct appearance and size.
THESE PODS ARE TYPICALLY LED BY A MATRIARCH, THE OLDEST AND MOST EXPERIENCED FEMALE. The bonds within pods are strong, and they work together to protect their young, hunt, and socialize. Each pod (group) of killer whales has its own unique vocal language, allowing them to communicate with each other.
They have been observed displaying cultural behaviours passed down from generation to generation, such as teaching youngsters how to hunt and play.
ORCAS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED EXHIBITING PLAYFUL BEHAVIOUR, SUCH AS BREACHING (JUMPING OUT OF THE WATER) AND SLAPPING THEIR TAILS ON THE SURFACE. Adult Orcas males can grow up to 9.7 meters long and weigh up to 5,400 kilograms. FEMALE KILLER WHALES ARE GENERALLY SMALLER THAN MALES, REACHING LENGTHS OF UP TO 8.5 METERS AND WEIGHING AROUND 3,600 KILOGRAMS. ORCAS HAVE DISTINCTIVE BLACK AND WHITE COLOURING, ALONG WITH THEIR DISTINCTIVE BODY SHAPE WHICH HELPS THEM BLEND IN WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS AND AMBUSH PREY. ORCAS ARE APEX PREDATORS, MEANING THEY ARE AT THE TOP OF THE MARINE FOOD CHAIN AND HAVE NO NATURAL PREDATORS IN THE WILD.
Killer whales are found in all oceans of the world, from the Arctic to the Antarctic. They are incredibly adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of environments. They can be found in both cold and warm

FACTS
THEY HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HUNT AND CONSUME A WIDE VARIETY OF PREY, INCLUDING FISH, SQUID, SEALS, SEA LIONS, WALRUSES, AND EVEN OTHER WHALE SPECIES.
The also consume animals like dolphins, sharks and rays, seabirds and more. Killer whales have excellent vision both above and below the water’s surface. Killer whales have excellent eyesight and can spot prey from far away. It is generally believed that killer whales can spot prey from a depth of up to about 15 meters below the surface in clear water depending on water conditions, including water clarity and the presence of underwater obstacles. They also possess exceptional hearing and can detect sounds at frequencies beyond human range. Killer whales are powerful and agile swimmers, swimming at speeds of up to 56 kilometers per hour. They use echolocation to navigate and locate prey in dark or murky waters. Echolocation in killer whales is a biological system where they emit sounds to locate and identify objects or prey underwater by interpreting the returning echoes. On average, they can hold their breath for about 5 to 10 minutes when they are actively swimming or hunting. Although relatively rare, they are capable of staying submerged for longer periods if needed. In some cases, they have been known to hold their breath for up to 20 minutes or more, but that’s often associated with specific hunting or foraging behaviours. Orcas have a unique way of sleeping, in which only half of their brain is asleep at a time, allowing them to
remain alert for potential threats. Orcas have to remain conscious, while they are sleeping. This is because their breathing is not automatic like humans, they have to actively decide when to breath, and so they must be conscious even when sleeping. They are known for their iconic breaching behaviour, where they jump out of the water and land with a splash. SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THIS BREACHING BEHAVIOUR MAY BE USED FOR MATING, COMMUNICATION, OR SIMPLY FOR FUN. A baby killer whale (called a calf) will stay with its mother for several years before becoming independent. FEMALE KILLER WHALES TYPICALLY GIVE BIRTH EVERY THREE TO FIVE YEARS, RESULTING IN A POPULATION GROWTH RATE OF APPROXIMATELY 2-5% ANNUALLY. THIS CAN VARY DEPENDING ON FACTORS LIKE FOOD AVAILABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. Males usually live between ages 3050, while females can live up to 80-90 years in the wild. IN CAPTIVITY, KILLER WHALES HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO LIVE INTO THEIR SIXTIES.
23
IN CAPTIVITY, KILLER WHALES HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO RECOGNIZE THEMSELVES IN MIRRORS, INDICATING SELF-AWARENESS. Killer whales are important keystone species, playing a vital role in maintaining marine ecosystem balance. They help regulate populations of other marine mammals and keep ocean environments healthy. Killer whales are vulnerable to various human activities, such as overhunting, declining prey populations, habitat destruction, and pollution. ENTANGLEMENT IN FISHING NETS AND COLLISIONS WITH SHIPS POSE SIGNIFICANT RISKS TO KILLER WHALES. Killer whales have been known to exhibit aggressive behaviour towards boats and other human-made objects. Climate change affects their habitats and prey distribution, further threatening their survival. Researchers study killer whales using techniques like satellite tracking, acoustic monitoring, and photo identification.

WHAT TO DO IF I FIND A KITTEN/S IN MY GARDEN? So, you’ve heard kittens crying under a bush, in that pile of junk or somewhere quiet on your business premises – maybe you didn’t even know there was a Mama cat around.
Ooohhh! Don’t we all just love kittens and seeing them there all alone tugs on the heart strings BUT please don’t rush to scoop them up immediately as it is important to understand that this is almost never in a kitten’s best interest. 1. Do not touch them, Mama cat may reject them after you have done so – just monitor from a good distance. 2. Mama Cat is around – she has gone looking for food or just needs a break and to stretch her legs. She’s listening and keeping an eye still. 3. Maybe it’s a single kitten – Mama cat is in the process of moving them and will be back for the last one in a while but not whilst you’re too close. 4. Once you’ve ascertained Mama cat is around then let them be for now as Mama’s milk is always BEST and you can help her by putting out some cat
food and water nearby. 5. Now you can contact your local Trap Neuter Return Organisations to get a plan in place for their future. When to take action: You have waited for hours (from 6-8 hours if they are tiny kittens and up to 24 hours if they are running about) and the Mama cat hasn’t returned, now it’s time to step in. Get a strong box or cat carrier, a blanket and if possible, a hot water bottle to place under the blanket.

Bigger kittens need a very secure box so be aware. Tiny kittens need
get to a vet or rescue organisation as soon as possible as they will require bottle feeding. Please note, do not give them cow’s milk. Older kittens may be offered some food and water. Keep them safe until a rescue organisation can assist you – a spare room is best and they are also to be kept away from your own pets. You should also act quick if the kittens or their mother look sick or injured and are clearly not thriving. If there are kittens …. there is a mother cat. For Trap Neuter Return organisations BOTH kittens and the mother cat are important. Very often the kittens are set up in a cage behind the trap as it is the best way to lure Mama Cat into the trap. By removing the kittens but not getting the Mama cat, could mean she’ll have another litter in 4 months’ time and the cycle will continue.

When Blouberg resident Janice Mohr brought her brand new puppy home, little did she know that it would mark the beginning of a journey that would culminate in the launch of Rusty’s Expo - the Mother City’s first premium outdoor pet lifestyle expo – that took place in Claremont on 7 and 8 October 2023. As an events professional, she saw a gap in the market that would bring together pet lovers, local pet brands and service providers within an intimate yet upscale setting. The inaugural Rusty’s Expo featured two days of pet-centric brands showcasing and promoting their products and services, a full stage programme including grooming demos as well as headline acts, a dog sitting service, a dog adoption weekend facilitated by the Animal Welfare Society of SA, and more. “I am particularly passionate about supporting local, so I wanted to create a platform for established and new pet businesses in and around Cape Town to showcase their
How a woman’s love for her dog launched Cape Town’s first pet lifestyle expo products and services,” reflects Mohr. “The nature of my job often takes me away from home, so the added benefit of staging this event is that I can have Rusty with me while I work. It was my vision to deliver a pet expo created by pet lovers, for pet lovers and their fur-children of all kinds, shapes and sizes.” In addition to showcasing local pet businesses, the expo welcomed local charitable organisations who were presented with a platform on which to raise awareness about the great work they do, and educate the public about their activities. Says Mohr, “most Capetonians are only really 32
aware of the dog and cat rescue organisations that do excellent work to make sure abandoned, neglected, surrendered and rescued animals have a safe haven until they can be placed into their new forever homes. My aim was to expand their knowledge base and introduce the public to services they may not have been aware of.” Rusty’s Expo will see a number of exciting expansions in 2024, with a brand new website, more exhibitors and a wider variety of locally produced products and service. NOVEMBER 2023 | PETPRINTS
The popular Pet Portrait photobooth will be on-site again to capture those special moments with expo-goers and their fur-kids, and Mohr is already working on a ‘pawsome’ stage programme. In addition, Rusty’s Expo will introduce agility shows, best dressed pet and owner competitions, as well as demonstrations from the SA Guide Dog Association. “I am incredibly grateful for the amazing support we received from the local pet brands who signed up for the first event. A formal pet expo is an unfamiliar one to Cape Town pet lovers, who are used to brands showcasing their products at smaller markets around the city, and I specifically wanted to start small to establish proof of concept. However, even the biggest events had humble beginnings, and I am excited to build on this and establish Rusty’s Expo as a household name in the years to come.”

SUN SQUARE GARDENS
12 APOSTLES
With the launch of five SunPet rooms, the SunSquare Cape Town, Gardens provides a wonderful amenity for folks travelling with pets. Most impressive is the Sealy pet bed. While Julie curled up on the bed I lay on the floor and rested my head on it to be close to her. That was probably the most comfortable my head has ever been!
Julie’s bed at the fabled Red Carnation’s 12 Apostles Hotel & Spa on the edge of The Atlantic was large and luxurious. We were welcome to dine with her in the Leopard Bar, on the second floor which arguably has the best view in the house. Their pet menu, which includes purr-fect bites for cats too, was created by executive chef Christo Pretorius in conjugation with local vet. Beef fillet with boiled potato wedges and gravy or chopped vegetable and chicken salad and others.
SunPet rooms come at a R250 premium and a R500 returnable deposit is payable. What you get for this, in addition to having your beloved pet with you, is the fabulous bed, branded food and water bowls, a synthetic grass patch on which to pee, toys, poo bags and most importantly, vinyl floors which means keeping the room hygienic is easy. Pets and humans are welcome to dine together on the deep covered balcony at Zepi, the hotel’s buffet and grill restaurant and from where a generous breakfast buffet is served. Order from the Woof Cuisine menu Steak Frites (R65) or Paw Licken Chicken (R35). There are Purrific items on the menu to order for cats too.
The hotel has an especially designed branded plinth into which food and water bowl fit and the plushest-ofplush royal-blue cushions on which to sleep. Our suite had direct access to the lawns and mountain so we didn’t think it wise to let her be off the lead, even when taking in the afternoon sun while overlooking the sea. https://12apostleshotel.com.

And, so that humans are not outdone by our beloved four-legged family, there is a sitting room with TV streaming Netflix, a mini kitchen with espresso machine, sink, microwave and fridge and shower room with loo. For “bleisure” (business and leisure - get it?) travellers there’s a work area with desk and task lamp.
If you are traveling in larger groups, The Wildevy farmhouse accommodates 12 people in total if most in your party are happy with dorm-style loft accommodation. There are three king-sized bedrooms each with an ensuite bathroom although all are not fully private. With a jungle-gym play area, a pool and swings hanging from tall trees, there is much here to keep you busy and equally important, benches under trees and many quiet corners for contemplation within the beautiful environment. The waterlily covered dam is breathtaking and guests are invited to swim in it or use the little rowboat.
The L-shaped balcony has the kennel on one side with two chairs and a cocktail table. On the other side is a dining table that can comfortably accommodate four people. Although you can’t see the sea from your balcony, it has wonderful Lion’s Head and cityscape views. https://homesuitehotels.com/

RADISSON RED
THE POINT HOTEL, MOSSEL BAY
While Baxter, the Boston Terrier who “signs” welcome letters and features in their corporate design, is no longer on the team (he and his owner moved to another property) the spirit of Baxter is very much alive and well at this high-energy property in the Silo area of the V&A Waterfront.
The primary attraction of staying at The Point Hotel and Spa is the location. The appeal here is of near proximity, about 50 paces from the hotel’s front door, to a natural tidal pool that has been enhanced by showers and changing cubicles and safety ropes across the rock channels in the event that the tide is too great. At low tide, the Poort is calm and the soft sandy floor is easy to walk on for many hundred meters towards the sea source. In high tide the waves that crash over the rocky areas create white water and excitingly strong currents. And, because this part of the Indian Ocean is nearer to the warmer sea currents, it is a pleasure to swim in.
There is no traditional reception desk but rather a free-flowing area on the left where staffers are ready to check you in. There are giant red beanbags instead of couches and a natty redcoloured fridge too. On the opposite side of the lobby is a long table at which people work or hang. If ever a hotel were built with millennials in mind, this is it. The important stuff, lightening-speed internet and fully interactive big-screens in the rooms as well as fashion-forward design makes this property pop with colour and energy. The roof top features the Red Roof Bar in a converted truck, a long lap pool and kitchen serving pizzas and grills. A dog bed, water and food bowl were provided. There is a 24-hour gym in the hotel too. Radisson RED, V&A Waterfront baxter@radissonred.com Out of town getaway
There is a paved and popular walking route along the coast in Mossel Bay which is dog friendly as are many of the beaches like Santos Beach, about five minutes car journey from The Point. Adjacent to The Point Hotel and Spa is a Spur restaurant which is not pet friendly and the Mossel Bay Zipline, which runs from St Blaize Lighthouse on the hill above the hotel, down to the sea, which is. Equally pet-friendly and a wonderful experience is Le Perron, a restaurant on the old train platform. https://pointhotel.co.za
PETERSFIELD, CITRUSDAL
Pets are welcome throughout Petersfield in Citrusdal but note that Stonehaven, the house highest up on the mountain, is not fenced in while the others are. With more than a kilometre between accommodations, one feels wonderfully isolated. Although among the most affordable of accommodation options, one leaves Petersfield with a sense of the owner’s generosity. Loads of additional fire wood, for example, and the invitation to pick lemons from the tree when you see them speak to this. Also, the thoughtful touches like salt and pepper in the kitchen and good quality kitchen implements are remembered. Standouts at Petersfield include outside baths (there are tubs inside too) and a plunge pool to stay cool in the heat. Or, come winter, the sort of sofa in front of the fireplace that simply invites sloth. https://petersfieldfarm.co.za/

Ask the Vet Hi, my name is Travis
and I’m a vet at a referral practice in Cape Town, dealing exclusively with dogs and cats. I’m a cat-lover, and proud cat-dad to two rescues named Natsu and Falcon. In a world filled with conflicting veterinary information, Petprints has given me a chance to try and make sense of some of the muddle. So, if you have anything you want to ask, send it through and I’ll do my best to help you out.
Q: Dr. Travis, is CBD the best thing for my 1-year-old German Shepherd who is extremely energetic at this stage still, considering he is a puppy but he barks at everyone, dogs, children, adults. I am thinking of just using it when we are out with him? Even though he’s been to K9 school I would like to of course give him the training to be more social and not constantly in a state of protective mode. Whenever the trainers used to take him, he’d be fine, however when I am around, he barks at anyone who approaches. Any advice would be so helpful. A: Over the past few years, CBD containing products have been increasingly used to treat a variety of medical and behavioural conditions. Online, it is very easy to find a lot of anecdotal evidence supporting the use of CBD for anxious or aggressive behaviour, but the clinical use of these products is still being studied, making it difficult to find studies promoting or discouraging its use. There was a study done in 2021 by researchers in Australia and Italy where they evaluated the effect that CBD had on the aggressive behaviour of shelter dogs. While the number of dogs involved in the study was small, the researchers believe that the results indicated that the use of CBD does reduce aggressive behaviour. The CBD did not affect activity level. Based on the research that I could find, there doesn’t seem to be any harm in trying CBD in your dog to see if it makes a difference. None of the recent studies show any adverse effects of using CBD, provided that there was no contamination with THC in the oil. Importantly, none of the studies showed a reduction in activity levels, which means that CBD oil is unlikely to affect his high energy levels. For this reason, I think that the CBD is unlikely to fix your dog’s behaviour on its own. While it might help, you will need to continue to work with a behaviourist or trainer to improve his self-control. Other medications like Fluoxetine may also help,
42
but that would have to be done with the help of a behaviourist or veterinarian who has examined him. Q: Dear Dr. Travis, I’m a first-time bunny owner and I’m currently buying the food the pet shop suggests but I would like the opinion of a vet on what the best diet is to feed my 4-month-old male bunny. He is not sterilised yet either. What age would be the best to do this? A: A young rabbit should be fed a diet consisting primarily of lucerne hay (also called alfalfa hay outside South Africa), which can be supplemented with pellets and very small amounts of fresh leafy, green vegetables. Lucerne hay is high in calcium and protein, which will help a young rabbit’s growing body. This must always be available with fresh water. As they reach their adult size, the lucerne hay can be reduced over time, and replaced with grass hay. Regardless of life-stage, hay should always make up the majority of a rabbit’s diet to ensure dental and intestinal health. Diets too high in pellets or treats can also lead to obesity. There is a useful chart on the Lafebervet website if you want more information on feeding rabbits at different life stages. It’s generally advised to get a male rabbit neutered at around 5 or 6 months old. Q: Hi Doctor, my dog is 8 years old and is showing signs of diabetes, example: he drinks a lot more water than usual, which also makes him urinate more often. Lately I have noticed that he does not eat as much as he used to. Due to the recurring urinary infections, I have taken him to the vet and they have tested him for diabetes. His test however, came back clear, so now that we have ruled that out of the picture what do you think this could be? I can tell my poor dog is not the same.
NOVEMBER 2023 | PETPRINTS
A: The term used to describe an increase in thirst is polydipsia and the term used to describe increased urination is polyuria, and there are several conditions that can cause these abnormalities. Diabetes mellitus is definitely one of the causes, but kidney disease and some hormonal diseases can also cause these signs. In general, the first step in figuring out the cause would be a urine test. This will tell the vet how concentrated the urine is to give an idea of kidney function, if there is glucose in the urine to indicate diabetes mellitus or if there is an infection. You mention in the question that your dog has recurring bladder infections, so this might be a part of the problem. Bladder infections can also be a cause of polyuria and polydipsia, so in cases where there is an infection, this would be the first thing to address. Then, once the infection is cleared, the urine test can be repeated. Based on the results of the urine test, more testing might be needed, including blood tests, abdominal scans and radiographs. Some of these tests may also be needed since your dog also has a reduced appetite and doesn’t seem the same to you.

Q: Hi Dr. Travis, I work as a teacher at a creche, and I have a group of children aged between 4 and 5 years old. Currently, I’m educating them on how to take care of their pets during the summer and how to recognize warning signs of dehydration in their furry friends. I’d like to know what the most common signs of dehydration in pets are. Additionally, do you have any other tips or warnings I can share with the children, beyond ensuring their pets have access to cold water and avoiding walking them during the hottest part of the day?

OnlineStore for Pet Lovers
A: Heat stroke is a commonly seen, but dangerous, condition that vets tend to see a lot of in the warmer months of the year. Rapid elevations in body temperature can lead to dehydration, but when the temperature becomes too high, it can damage internal organs and cause muscle cells to break. Even with prompt treatment, this damage can cause permanent injury to some organs, and some patients die from the condition. Dogs with flat faces are at an especially high risk of heat stroke as they can’t exchange heat with panting as well as other dogs can. The best way to avoid heat stroke is to avoid exercise in the warmest part of the day. Owners should also be encouraged to take water with them on walks so that the dogs can drink if they are thirsty. It’s important to know that dogs don’t always show signs of heat exhaustion until it’s too late. Some signs to look out for would be excessive panting, weakness, incoordination or a change in colour in the gums. In some animals with heat stroke, the pink of their gums can be a noticeably darker shade, although paleness should also raise concern. In animals that are dehydrated, their gums often have a dry or sticky feel. Tenting the skin to see how long it stays upright is a crude method of checking hydration, but it can be unreliable in animals with loose skin, or in animals who have recently lost weight. To prevent dehydration, cool, fresh water must always be available. Like us, dogs can get sunburn which can lead to skin damage or cancer. For this reason, it’s important to have places of shade at home where animals can rest during the warmest part of the day. Dogs that like to lie on their backs in the sun, and dogs with white noses and ears will need some pet friendly sunblock to protect them as well. On a similar note; cats that lie in windows can sunburn as well, especially their ears and noses. Dogs can also burn their paws on hot gravel, so a general rule of thumb is that, if you can’t comfortably hold your hand on a surface then a dog shouldn’t be walking there.

Adopt a T
he Maltese, as its name suggests, traces its origins back to the Mediterranean island of Malta. This breeds history is shrouded in the mists of time, with roots stretching as far back as 500 B.C. It’s a breed that has graced the laps of royalty, from ancient Roman emperors to European monarchs. These regal dogs were highly prized not only for their endearing looks but also for their playful personalities. The Maltese terrier literally and figuratively speaking, then gave birth to some of the cutest dog breeds known to man. Why are they so popular today? Maltese are known for their sweet and gentle temperament. They love to cuddle and be close to their owners. They are also very sociable and easily get along well with other dogs, cats, and children. In contrast to that, when compared to other breeds, they are not prone to be aggressive or territorial, but rather loyal and devoted to their family members. Another commonly known fact about this breed is that they are often recommended as hypoallergenic. This means that they cause fewer allergic reactions than usual. The fact that they do not shed much means that they produce less dander, which is the dead skin cells that carry the allergens. Dander can stick to the dog’s hair and spread around
Maltese
the house, causing allergic reactions in some people. By having less dander and shedding less hair, the Maltese reduces the number of allergens in the environment. However, they still need regular grooming to keep their coat clean and healthy. Have you ever heard someone say that Maltese are exceptionally smart? Yes, almost all canine owners indeed feel this way about their dogs, however, there is a lot of evidence that Maltese truly are smart boys and girls. For example, a study by the University of British Columbia found that Maltese are among the most intelligent dog breeds, scoring high on problem-solving and obedience tests. Mark Twain once said, ‘Heaven goes by favour; if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in’. As with many other toy-type breeds, however, indoor living is essential for this breed. They share your home, your bed, friends and family among other things. This gives you a good idea of how they see themselves. They see themselves as another family member. Maltese dogs are happy to live in apartments or houses, as long as they have enough human interaction and mental stimulation. Because of their attachment to humans, they suffer from separation anxiety when spending
46
time away from them. Separation anxiety is a condition where Maltese dogs in particular feel stressed and scared when left alone without their owners or other trustworthy human contact. Furthermore, Maltese are known for their youthful energy and vitality, making them fun and lively companions for many years. Even in old age, Maltese dogs stay playful and cheerful, bringing joy and happiness to their owners every day. They are always ready to engage in the activities of the day and explore new things, keeping their owners entertained and amused. Since they are intelligent and trainable, they are suitable for beginners and experienced dog owners alike. Maltese are like little bundles of joy that brighten up any day. They have a lot of love and joy to offer to anyone who is looking for a faithful and friendly pet. They are affectionate, friendly and faithful dogs that will make you fall in love with them at first sight. We provide sterilization, vaccinations, deworming and microchipping with adoptions of puppies, but not adults. Our adoption fee is R850 for a single dog adoption and R1200 for more than one.
