Issue: The side yard of this downtown condo is less than 100 sq. ft. and was a blank slate, described as “the prison yard.� Making use of the small space for a multitude of activities all while making it feel inviting and spacious was the challenge Solution: Floating concrete pads provide a space to lounge while complementing the contemporary nature of the condo. The custom metal planters allow for ample vegetable gardening in this small space. Issue: The sculptures were donated to the University from the Hollis family and placed in a location without any landscaping. Currently, many ASU facilities employees, staff and students park and walk through the space which poses an issue for the safety of the artwork. The landscape design had to prevent this while mimicking the desert feel of its previous location at the Hollis’ home and complementing the adjacent desert landscaping Solution: Simple layering of desert adaptive plants complement the existing tree and, along with boulders, will prevent students and staff from parking and traveling through the space potentially damaging the sculptures. Grading and drainage issues also create an eyesore. There is no procession to and from the frontage area along Mill Avenue, the existing pots near the building are not irrigated and hard to maintain. Solution: The key to creating a SHPO approved landscape is maintaining the views to the building and using desert adaptive materials to avoid a total irrigation remodel. A new promenade was added to reach out to Mill Avenue and sculptural plant elements have been added to alleviate maintenance woes and reduce water use. Role: Design, rendering, estimating

A r i z o n a S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y H a l l e G a r d e n R e n n o v a t i o n Issue: The existing sunken garden required renovation as work was being completed on ISTB4, a new science building and Air Apparent, a sculpture by James Turrell at the eastern gateway to the Tempe campus Solution: New plant types, better adapted to the now mature landscape, were massed in keeping with the original intent of the garden but also to add new, nuanced color to the space. Different heights and colors of plants will add new dimension to the garden and fit with it’s now shady climate because of a canopy of mature trees. Role: Plan compiling, irrigation inventory, plant inventory, plant research, planting massing, estimating, in field plant placement, installation oversight.

Issue: The existing space lacked the necessary exits to accommodate larger events and which would require additional hardscape. The space was obscured from view by a tall memorial wall that disconnected the park from the campus. Solution: The first step was to survey the area and create another exit so that they accommodate more people on the site. Materials were selected to keep with the desert feel of the area, however, turf was added to accommodate younger tailgaters and future sun devils. The area is heavily used now for tailgating events and is lovely enough to stage weddings and other formal events. Role: Diagraming, design, material selection, installation oversight

Issue: The existing site furniture on the Tempe campus dated back to 1985 and was still in use. The furniture was in disrepair and the placement and condition proved very unappealing. Solution: Much study was done to determine what type of furniture people would enjoy and what would hold up in our intense climate. All furniture on campus then had to be inventoried. Extensive diagraming, inventorying, and budgeting were involved. The project was so large that phasing had to be implemented. Within each phase construction documents had to be done for each piece of furniture. There has been a noted increase in use since the installation of the furniture. Role: Inventory, construction documents, estimating, installation oversight

Issue: The Town of Marana is a bedroom community located just north of Tuscon, Arizona. Marana is looking to develop a plan for the expansion of their downtown over the next 50 years. Solution: Our class has been performing inventorying and site visits thus far. We have done an initial presentation to a city planner who was very excited about the direction that we’re heading. Our final product will include five districts with visions, descriptions, case studies, design guidelines and renderings of district character. At the end of the capstone we will be presenting our final product to the city council, at which time they will vote on if the plan should be adopted or not. Issue: The cities of Tempe, Phoenix and Mesa wanted to focus on temporary development along the light rail corridor. Mesa in particular has an interesting site on the corner of Country Club and Main Street, there is currently a moratorium on permanent development because of the Bailey Brake case. They wished to do something temporary that would attract people to downtown Mesa. Solution: Our group proposed temporary public art, a small public park space, a gateway area at the direct corner and an urban tree farm to be used on future Mesa development projects. We specified that whatever the final design be that it spoke directly to the streets on either side and paid special attention to incorporating transit of all kinds; bus, light rail and cycling. Issue: This was a third year undergraduate studio and an exercise in large scale land/community planning. The site is in north Phoenix off of Carefree Highway. Bordered by the highway to the north and an existing community to the south we had to incorporate the flood plain, existing topography as well as needs of the community. Solution: The project, titled Sweeping Vistas, was a community designed around recreation in this pristine desert community. A boulevard took you from Carefree highway through open preserve space and over the rolling topography into a town center with amble space for varying activities. I learned a great deal about planning from this studio and was inspired to pursue my MUEP. Role: Design, rendering, presentation

Issue: This was a third year undergraduate studio and an exercise in park design. The current Harmon Park is surrounded by section 8 housing and was in desperate need of redevelopment. However, the current baseball fields are highly used as is the existing playground. The design of the park should speak to the new, contemporary library placed adjacent to the park. Solution: My design for the park was to be a nexus for the community, a large corten steel tree design to catch rain was the literal nexus in the center of the park. The design incorporated a community garden, olympic grade pool, regulation soccer fields, basebal fields and basketball court so that children in the area could have a safe place to exercise.
