A logic layout makes it easier to navigate amongst the national pavilions, industry segments and theme halls. Practically all the leading maritime companies in the world will exhibit at the fair. THE BLUE ECONOMY HALL One of the new things at this year’s fair is the Blue Economy Hall. Nor-Shipping’s Head of Sustainability and Technology, Silje Bareksten : - Sustainable operations and economic growth are not contradictions in the blue economy. It is in fact the opposite, says Silje Bareksten.
- But this does not happen by itself. In order for this to happen - and it has to. for both the industry’s sake and for society’s in general - we have to sit down and discuss opportunities, share knowledge, skillsets and technology, and together define the strategy. - This is crucial, and that is why Nor-Shipping 2019 is introducing the Blue Economy Hall. - The ocean is our most important natural resource. It could become the key to solving the world’s population growth. But the ocean is also endangered. Therefore, it is crucially important that we take care of it, while we simultaneously raise the environmental standard. And I believe that we can solve the problem, together, says Bareksten. Nor-Shipping has used the1.300 square meters Hall A to create the Blue Economy Hall.
INDEPENDENT STANDPOINT The 2019 fair will be the first where NorShipping has not taken on the role of trade show organizer and will thus attend the fair from an independent standpoint. The role of trade show organizer has been taken over by the Nor-Shipping Principles, who defines a code of conduct for exhibitors as well as participants, as well as a call for everyone to back up the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Nor-Shipping has chosen to focus heavily on specific world goals: Goal 5, 13, 14 and 17 – which revolve around diversity and equality amongst genders, climate action, life below water, and partnerships for the goals.
to create a foundation for a solid, responsible and sustainable platform for growth and cooperation, says Director of Nor-Shipping, Per Martin Tanggaard. 30.000 VISITORS Nor-Shipping 2019 is expected to pull in around 30.000 people - this includes shipping companies, shipyards, maritime organizations, port authorities and many more. OPENING HOURS The fairs opening hours are the following: Tuesday 4 June 10 – 17 Wednesday 5 June 10 – 17 Thursday 6 June 10 – 17 Friday 7 June 10 – 15
- These are goals that we believe in, and it is not an attept to look like missionaries in the eyes of exhibitors nor visitors. But we do wish DAILY NEWS ON WWW.MARITIMEDENMARK.DK

DENMARK STRONGLY REPRESENTED AT NOR-SHIPPING As always, there will be many Danish maritime companies present when Nor-Shipping opens on June 4. The red and white flag is most visibly represented at the Danish pavilion – which is arranged by the Danish Marine Group – while other Danish companies are participating in the event by exhibiting in the industrial contexts that they are part of. - As always, we are excited to welcome Danish companies to Nor-Shipping, says Per Martin Tanggaard, CEO of Nor-Shipping. - Denmark is always one of our largest collective exhibitors. This reflects the strong ties and common interests that exist between our two maritime countries, says Per Martin Tanggaard GOOD FEELING ABOUT THE EVENT Mark Lerche, Head of Danish Marine Group, and responsible for the Danish pavilion at Nor-Shipping 2019 looks forward to the fair. - We have a good feeling about Nor-Shipping, says Mark Lerche. - The numbers we have seen from Norway are looking strong. For the first time since the oil market’s downturn, employment growth at the shipping companies in Norway was around 1,500 people last year, and this year they expect further growth of just over 3,000 people. That is really positive, says Mark Lerche. GROWTH IN PROFIT - We also saw growth in last year’s revenue and earnings in many shipping companies, and they expect to build around 140 ships and 5 rigs over the next five years. That’s another great sign. - You can see this in comparison to the fact, that in February 2017 there were 180 out-of-service ships and rigs. This year, the number has been reduced to about 130. 110 ships and 20 rigs. So, there is quite a big reduction - this indicates that things are heading in the right direction. - I expect that this will create a greater demand at Nor-Shipping this year, says Mark Lerche. NEARLY 40 DANISH EXHIBITORS PRESENT The number of Danish companies represented at Nor - Shipping will be around the same as seen the last few events – roughly 40 companies.
danish maritime magazine
/ PAGE 8
- The big difference for us this year is, that after 8 years’ work we are finally neighbors to the Norwegian pavilion in Hall C, this is something I expect a lot from, says Mark Lerche. - We have seen a general decline in the number of people in the exhibition halls since 2015 due to the oil markets downturn. But I hope and believe that we will experience some more life in the halls this time. Both because more people have come to the industry in Norway, and because there is better revenue and bottom line in 2018 than has been for a long, long time. And because our “neighbors” pull more people in. CRUISE & FERRY In addition to Danish Marine Group, the Danish Cruise & Ferry Group will also be present at Nor-Shipping with their own group stand. Danish Cruise & Ferry Group is working closely with the newly formed Norwegian Cruise & Ferry Group this year, and the two pavilions are hosting events together. - This makes perfect sense to us, says Mark Lerche. The Norwegian shipyards are now focusing very much on the market for small expedition cruise ships, which has turned out to be a replacement for the offshore orders. The small expedition cruise ships are designed to sail in the same demanding environments as offshore vessels. Therefore, the Norwegian shipyards have used the knowledge they already had from offshore. Because of the close ties between Denmark and Norway, especially in the maritime segment, Danish subcontractors have benefitted from the increased Norwegian demand in the small expedition cruise ship segment. CLOSE BUSINESS PARTNERS Norway is Denmark’s fifth largest export market.

BLÜCHER GOES ALLIN AT NOR-SHIPPING West Jutland’s Blücher, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of drainage systems in stainless steel, has high expectations for Nor-Shipping. The company offers drainage solutions for everything from bathrooms over large industrial facilities to luxury cruise ships. Blücher was founded in Denmark but is today owned by the quoted US concern Watts Water Technologies. Blücher has subsidiaries and offices all across Europe, in Russia, the Middle East, the U.S. and China - but the headquarters are still in Vildbjerg in West Jutland.
B
lücher is a regular at Nor-Shipping, where the company has exhibited through many years, and 2019 will be no exception. - The Norwegian shipping industry is extremely important to us. There are a lot of shipyards in Norway, and we deliver to nearly all of them, says Blücher’s Export Manager Marine, Michael Tønnesen. - A large part of the projects we deliver to: passenger ships, oil & gas and large fishing trawlers, often begin in Norway - either via a Norwegian shipping company or a Norwegian ship architect. That’s why we spend a lot of time on lobbying in Norway, we communicate with a lot of stakeholders. When the projects are decided, we follow up on them in the local markets - Russia, Romania, Poland or other countries. But if we do not have these stakeholders from the start unless we are included in the specifications from the start - then we rarely win the projects, says Michael Tønnesen. SALES ARE NOT BASED ON PRICES - Our sales of products and systems are not based on our prices. We might be the most expensive on the market. That is why a large part of what we do is specification work, where we go out and speak to shipping companies and ship architects to tell them why they should use Blücher on future projects. - We go to Nor-Shipping to maintain and take care of our Norwegian marine customers, but part of it is also about marketing development. We get to invite a lot of interests that we want to speak to. That is why we bring a lot of products and systems that they haven’t seen before, Says Michael Tønnesen.
NEW PRODUCTS Are you brining new products to Nor-Shipping ? - Yes, we definitely are. We have a new product called non-welded penetrations. Normally, if a shipyard wishes to install this kind of product, they will have to weld it into the construction. We have made new types with a screw-on solution, which means that all the welding is eliminated. This enables an installation time of 2 minutes instead of 20 minutes, says Michael Tønnesen. - We have launched ned design friendly floor drainage solutions. You might know them from bathrooms, where there used to be a square drain grate, which has been replaced with a slim grate that looks good. We now deliver these to ships as well. ADVANTAGES OF STAINLESS STEEL - As always, we focus heavily on safety. We are basically the only ones on the global market who offers a completely non-flammable system in stainless steal. We believe that we can offer a complete system so that customers dont have to collect pieces from several different manufactures. We deliver it all – in stainless steal, says Michael Tønnesen. GROWTH IN NORWAY Is the reason for going all-in at Nor-Shipping, that you are seeing growth in Norway? - The Norwegian market has seen better days, especially back when the oil-and gas business was successful. We are still far from the level in 2014, but Norwegian shipyards are busy once again. No longer dealing with oil and gas projects, but instead with passenger ships. Especially the so-called expedition cruise ships segment is busy, and we deliver a lot of work for them. Also for large shishing vessels and service ships for the breeding industry.
- That is why we believe we can expand our market at Nor-shipping – In Norway and in other countries, says Michael Tønnesen. FOUNDED IN 1965 Blücher was founded in 1965 by Johannes Blücher Skibild, a skilled and visionary plumber with both his feet on the ground. The company’s range of products includes more than 2,500 standard products, including custommade floor drains, drainage pipes and industrial floors. All products are stainless steel to ensure quality, flow capacity and hygiene combined with low maintenance. The products are manufactured in a module system, where separate components are combined to create complete products. Blücher also offers custom-made solutions, where flexibility and the craftsmanship in the production phase are important elements of the process.

DANISH MARITIME FAIR 2020 STAND SALES OFF TO A GOOD START
The next edition of the Danish Maritime Fair takes place from May 13-14, 2020. øren Lindquist, Exhibition Manager at BC Hospitality Group, has the primary responsibility for the Danish Maritime Fair 2020: - The stand sales are off to a good start. placed the order in connection with the kick-off meeting in March. With its location in Landskrona, Oresund DryDocks is very well-positioned in relation to the Danish market. Maersk Training are amongst the Danish companies who have already booked a stand at the Fair. Maersk Training offers courses and training for a wide spectrum of the maritime segment. BOOK A STAND NOW Jacob Ekstrøm, Sales & Relation Manager, BC Hospitality Group, who is in charge of day-today communication with the exhibitors says:
DAILY NEWS ON WWW.MARITIMEDENMARK.DK
- Some of the companies I have spoken with have been a little surprised to receive a call this early. ‘The event is more than a year away’ - they say. Yes, it’s true. Now is the perfect time to place your order, so you can get exactly the location you want. Just make a reservation - you don’t need to buy or pay here and now. We really want exhibitors to book well in advance, so that we can start putting the big puzzle together - and have a great fair in 2020. THE FIFTH EDITION OF DMF This will be the fifth edition of the Danish Maritime Fair. The event was established in 2014 and was held in October the same year.
The event was pushed forward that year, so that it could be part of the newly established Danish Maritime Days - a public supported private initiative, with the purpose of marketing Denmark as a maritime nation with strong competences. The first Fair was held in Bella Center Copenhagen and was a great success. The Fair was then - just like the Danish Maritime Days - held the following two years. In 2018 the Fair was held in May, and now has two years in between the events.
In order to make it even easier and more attractive to visit the Fair, free access for those already registered has been implemented. MULTI-ANNUAL AGREEMENT The Danish Maritime Fair has entered into a multi-year agreement with Bella Center Copenhagen, which will enable the maritime trade fair to continue to benefit from the great expertise in hosting major events and fairs that BC Hospitality Group has, and the excellent framework that Scandinavia’s largest exhibition and conference center offers.
From 2020, the Fair will again be held in Bella Center Copenhagen, where the Fair takes over the entire Hall H. Here, the Danish Maritime Fair will have its own distinctive entrance with a large foyer. Access opportunities to the Fair is outstanding - just outside the hall there is a large number of parking spaces, a metro station and a stop for several bus lines. The motorway access is a few blocks away, and the Copenhagen Airport is only a few minutes by taxi or train.
- We have 40 years of experience in hosting fairs and events, so we know the market really well, says Exhibition Manager Søren Lindquist.
Hal H takes is very spacious. Is there a risk that it is too big for the Danish Maritime Fair? - No, definitely not. We are excited about the fact that Hall H is so big, because it gives us the opportunity to build a fair that fits the requirements. We are able to stretch the exhibition in both ends like a harmonica, so that visitors always will experience a fair that has an intimate atmosphere ,says Søren Lindquist.
CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP TRACK In addition to the Fair, DMF will also have a concurrent conference and workshop track. Preparations for this have already begun, although it is still too early to announce topics and speakers.
- We are a full-service provider, that means that we have the framework, as well as what is needed to fill the frames, and we have our own hotel and metro just outside the door – therefore we are well prepared to take in exhibitors and guests from all over the world.
- What we can say with certainty is that there will be a number of conferences and workshops
during the two days. Everything will take place within the framework of Bella Center Copenhagen, says Martin Uhlenfeldt from Maritime Denmark, who is responsible for organizing the events. - We will no longer host all day events. It is important that the Fair and the concurrent meeting activities are part of an interaction, where participants have enough time to visit the fair, and vice versa, that the exhibition participants have the opportunity to poke to attend the meetings, without having to spend entire days on it. hat are the key points customers should have in mind? “The marine and off-shore environment is an aggressive one, where humidity and salt, over time, will put the cabling to the test, so, they have to make sure, that the products come with marineapproved certificates”, says Mikkel Møller Jørgensen, sales manager at Hans Følsgaard’s, cable and cable management department. “They must make sure that the supplier of their choice, has the complete range of products, both the cables and all the surrounding products, like cable chains, glands, cable strips, labels etc. to have the needed range of compatible products. As we all know, no chain is stronger than the weakest link – That’s why we have the whole range, and all our products have DNV (Norske Veritas) marine-approved certificate.”

BETTER MAINTENANCE CAN HELP SAVE A LOT OF MONEY As the Danish merchant navy acquires larger and more advanced ships, higher demands are posed on the marine engineers that operate the ships. This also applies for the maintenance tasks onboard the ships. But many marine engineers are poorly educated in this segment due to the fact that maintenance is a small part of their education. Luckily, help is on the way.
F
redericia’s Bachelor of Technology Management and Marine Engineering has teamed up with Horsens VIA University College to create a new educational program called the Diploma of Technology in Maintenance. The program offers students the chance to create long-term strategies for maintenance, process management, and new tools for communication.

The education is aimed at engineers, marine engineers, building technicians, people who work with production technology, and installers who work with maintenance on a daily basis. The Diploma of Technology in Maintenance, which is a bachelor degree, is very much business orientated. Elements of this are for example found in project assignments that teaches

students knowledge that can immediately be used in the work force. But despite the nearly 1.000 Danish marine engineers sailing long distances, Fredericia’s Bachelor of Technology Management and Marine Engineering has not yet managed to put together a Diploma program of people who sail.
ADVERTORIAL - Then they try to make them run for 30,000 hours. Then maybe a bearing goes – and then you have found its limit. If you sat down systematically and did it at sea, then I think you could save a lot of money. I also think it is necessary, because you don’t get more money for maintenance tasks. - The manuals do not take into account the fact that the budgets are being cut every year. If you spread more knowledge about the discipline of maintenance, then you will be better suited to challenge the plans that lie ahead, and not overdo maintenance, and use the financial resources best possible. Do shipping offices have the required knowledge regarding maintenance? - Yes, I believe so. But they also have certain tasks that are more important to their daily schedule, such as loading ships with freight. The companies only start to pay attention to maintenance once something goes wrong. MODULES The Diploma of Technology in Maintenance consists of obligatory modules, amongst these are: • Technique and methods • Management, organizations, economy and information • M anagement, communication and team relations The education also has optional modules where you can immerse yourself in one’s specific areas of interest.
15-18 PEOPLE - We have had a few who have shown interest, but not enough to establish a class. To achieve this, we have to get 15 – 18 people, but this should be possible, says Lars Jenry Petersen Asset Management Lector at Fredericia’s Bachelor of Technology Management and Marine Engineering. What is it exactly that you offer? - What we offer is a skillset, a knowledge of how to run and operate ships with the least amount of downtime possible. Some people are very good at this, but it is evident that some could learn more in this field, says Lars Jenry Petersen. - There are five marine engineer schools in Denmark. They all dedicate limited amount of time to teaching maintenance. And if you have never learned the theory, you might not be capable of making all the right decisions. - Back when I sailed, we were 10-12 people in the engine room. Today they are 3 maybe 4. At
the same time these people are dealing with five times the machinery. I don’t think that they have time to do all the maintenance tasks. That is why they have to be better at creating a maintenance plan that makes sure that they take care of the areas that require maintenance the most. OVER-DOING MAINTENANCE Do you not get a manual when you buy the separate parts? - Yes, you do. But the manuals tend to focus on over-doing maintenance. If you to follow the manuals you will be doing too much too often. The manuals are designed to make sure that the creators never have to experience trouble with customers, says Lars Jenry Petersen. - Our students will be doing a lot of projects. This can for example be loading pumps that can run for 10.000 hours to make them run 20.000 hours instead. When they tear them apart and analyze bearings, gaskets and so on – they see that there is nothing wrong with them. This is a waste of money – and over doing maintenance.
The education is systematically built to take 2 years. But most people take it in between 3 and 4 years. - We meet two days a month. In the coming fall, the program takes place in September, October and November. And then the exam takes place in December. But you can’t do that in the same way when you sail. Therefore, an arrangement has been made so that the sailors can come here when they are home. Then we make a separate plan for them. Are there others in Denmark who offer the same type of education? - No, there is not.

NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR MONITORING EMISSIONS Nordic Tankers, Dania Ship Management and Danfoss IXA have joined forces in testing innovative technology for monitoring emissions. The result is a front runner solution to ensure global enforcement of the IMO’s requirements for sulphur emissions way before any legislation is pushed through .

“The sensor equipment from Danfoss IXA is an innovative piece of technology that enables ship owners to continuously prove compliance with the IMO’s requirements for sulphur emissions. At Nordic Tankers, together with our partners, we aim to be front-runners in supporting the development of our industry world-wide, why the cooperation with Danfoss IXA on testing the new solution is an interesting project for us”, says Per Sylvester Jensen, CEO, Nordic Tankers. The sensor technology is installed on the chemical tanker Nordic Mari. The ship is owned by Nordic Tankers with Dania Ship Management as trusted manager. “The equipment is well designed and was delivered to the Nordic Mari as a complete product. In the beginning of the test period, the durability of the sensor was challenged by the very toxic and harsh environment in which it was placed, but these problems have been solved by Danfoss IXA”, says Carsten Brix Ostenfeldt, CEO, Dania Ship
DATA SEND ASHORE “The technology makes it possible to document how much your ships are emitting worldwide, and the data is sent directly to you ashore. This means we can prove compliance at any time and once the development picks up speed, we will be ready and one step ahead of the rest of the industry”, says Carsten Brix Ostenfeldt and continues: “Our next target is to compare the readings onboard Nordic Mari with other external readings, for example the sensor fitted on the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark. The sensor on the bridge is first and foremost fitted to ensure compliance with Danish and global legislation, but over time such technology will also ensure a level playing field, which we support as a principle for doing business today”. ENGINE PERFORMANCE Besides monitoring emissions on an ongoing basis and proving compliance, the sensor technology also has enabled Dania Ship Management to track how the engines are performing by reading out the data from the vessel.
FACTS • In 2015, Danfoss IXA installed the sensor technology on the chemical tanker Nordic Mari that shuttles between Europe and the USA. • The tanker is owned by Nordic Tankers, and Dania Ship Management is the technical managers of the vessel. • The sensors from Danfoss IXA measure the emissions of SO2, NOx and NH3 while a cloud-solution makes data accessible to both ship owners and authorities.
“As a general rule, change in the shipping industry is driven by legislation. But if the sensor technology is following the development of electronically controlled engines, you will be able to continuously optimize combustion and cut fuel costs. This could be a future incentive for change as well”, says Carsten Brix Ostenfeldt.

CARGO HOLD CLEANING MADE EASY What will it take to shorten your turn-around time, make it possible to give your charterer new opportunities, have fewer work hazards, better the environment and at the same time increase your profits?
C
leaning of cargo holds is generally regarded as costly, time-consuming and tiresome work, containing both hazards to the workforce and to the environment. This problem area is now being addressed by the Danish company CLIIN, who has designed a cleaning robot for this very purpose. CLIIN was founded in 2016 with the specific aim to use robots for cleaning within the maritime industry. To succeed the management team was comprised of engineers, technicians and personal with hands on experience from the marine sector.

It proved efficient, through a trial and error period where the company worked closely with experts from J. Lauritzen, they were able to have a patented product ready for sale at the end of 2018. The technique and the ideas are so new, that CLIIN has obtained more than 30 new patents. A TRIPLE WIN - CLIIN robots in shipping is a triple win, says Thomas Jørgensen, CEO at CLIIN, a win for the profitability of shipping companies, a win for the working conditions on board vessels and a win for cleaner air and seas. - The understanding of the cleaning challenges, that all shipping companies are facing every

day, has been the very core of the developing process. So, partnership with leading shipping companies has been essential in developing versatile cleaning robot, which can be deployed in a multitude of configurations. MAIN PARTNER The main partner in the developing process has been J. Lauritzen, who has facilitated the many tests onboard their ships. The key person at J. Lauritzen is Technical Manager Marine, Martin Kondrup who says: - We have a high degree of self-interest in helping CLIIN developing their cargo hold cleaning robot. And I must say it has been a good expe-

rience to be working with the development team from CLIIN. They have expert technology knowledge, and a very hands-on understanding of our industry. - And because of the hard work, we are now able to replace a normal four step cleaning process, involving tons of chemicals and water, with a one-step pure water cleaning process. Since May 2018 we have implemented robots on board our vessels, and we are slowly implementing them to our fleet of bulk ships. RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI) When asked about his opinion on ROI Martin Kondrup answers:
- Apart from limiting the environmental impact, which is important to us, the CLIIN robot cleaning process is faster, less labor intensive and provides a significantly more effective cleaning, thus providing shipping companies a value proposition of more laden days and lower costs. Depending on operational pattern, shipping companies can expect a return on investment in less than a year. THE FUTURE FOR CLIIN - We started talks with D/S Norden during the summer 2018 and they began implementing the CLIIN robot in October 2018, states Thomas Jørgensen, and elaborates on the topic,
- We are in serious dialog with a wide range of shipowners from around the world. And we are developing new areas where our technology can be applied – so all in all we believe in a bright future.

C TELEPORT MANAGES TO CHANGE MARITIME FLIGHTS IN SECONDS
Any crew manager knows which hell it is to stand with a larger crew to switch from eg. an offshore platform or a ship, and sudden delays occur hours of flight rebooking, confirmations, changes. Not anymore. If it stands for C Teleport.
T
he newly launched Dutch maritime travel company has, using artificial intelligence, developed a fully automated web and app marine flights booking platform, which in seconds manages everything through a few clicks - even from a smartphone. - Initially, potential customers believe that our solution is too good to be true, but once they see it they are convinced that it’s actually all there, says marketing manager Alex Doeves, Rotterdam. The platform was developed on the basis of CEO Dmitrii Beliakov’s experience over 15 years in his previously established recruitment and flight management company Crewplanet.
danish maritime magazine
/ PAGE 26
- Booking flights needs to be done in a more contemporary way than through an army of travel agents with only local IATA licenses, sounded his reasoning and with the help of top-professional IT specialists and artificial intelligence (AI) Dmitrii Beliakov managed to create an app which not only manages flight bookings, rebooking and cancellations but also handles the entire invoice section in a simplified way. SEVERAL IATA LICENSES - Seamen in international service must be able to respond to e.g. a situation of machine damage, which puts the ship dead for a period. Or if you suddenly have to rebook a 120 men crew change from a platform on a Friday
DAILY NEWS ON WWW.MARITIMEDENMARK.DK
afternoon due to delays or accidents. Our app can handle the situation quite promptly, even though crew flights are demanding. What about those who have extra heavy luggage, need a different flight? There are really many variables, which makes booking marine flight complex. - Here, unlike most local agents, we have several IATA licenses today, so that via our updated system, we have a lot more flights than others. We combine this with efficient filtering so both the selection and the overview are larger. We can read the airlines rules per flight and tell e.g. if a flight is fully refundable, says Alex Doeves. He is surprised that even in crew management today, manual processing of bookings has
ADVERTORIAL been done, as has been done since the 1980s of the past Century. BUDGET MANAGEMENT AND PRICE GAIN Serving the C Teleport’s app does not require much bureaucracy. It is based on crew data and in basis requires the seafarer’s passport information. Rebooking and cancellations also no longer require traffic of invoices, credit notes and new invoices. The actual final amount is posted by appointment. Precisely the direct integration of the relevant - and correct - data between C Teleport and the customer ensures against the well-known and foolish obstacles that airline customers can experience due to a failure.
C Teleport CEO Dmitrii Beliakov
The use of the app connects HR planning and budget overview together, and Alex Doeves emphasizes that in addition to the time gains also in terms of manual booking, savings are gained through access to a larger number of international airlines and thus better prices. Savings on the travel agent page are also on the flat hand. (I do not understand this sentence.) The app runs online and on Android platforms. And also, the iPhone app has just been released this month. REAL GAME CHANGER C Teleport itself does not hide that this is a real game changer. But others have also seen the great potential, so the fund Mainport Innovation Fund has invested 1.2 million. euro in the only two-year-old company, which has also attracted interest in the EU. C Teleport is progressing and ready for new recruitment. Today, the majority of staff are IT specialists, while the rest are travel specialists, marketing and sales. C Teleport expects that Danish shipping companies will soon be on the customer list. ABOUT C TELEPORT Founded in 2017 by Dmitrii Beliakov. A FLOATING WORLD A floating pen for mariculture with no environmental footprint; Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae to produce biofuel; a self-sustainable, submerged astronaut training facility to simulate living in the depths of space; ocean thermal energy conversion, floating solar-powered bike paths, floating solar and wind farms, floating urban dairy farms and even autonomous floating communities or cities with their own cryptocurrencies!
T
his is not a sneak peek into the future but a reality that’s already taking shape across oceans and seas around the world. Why float? Well, because given the expected population growth, there just won’t be enough land for human beings in the future. The United Nations projects that the world’s population will increase by 1 billion in the next 15 years. That’s almost two-thirds of China total population in 2018. It estimates that world population will reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. STANFORD UNIVERSITY RESEARCH According to a Stanford University research, by 2050, all the reserve land in the world will be used on account of increasing demand for food, biofuels, industrial forestry, and urbanisation. Experts expect additional pressure on coastal regions because of rising sea levels due to climate change. Add the fact that oceans and seas account for half the surface of the earth and one can understand why there’s a need or fascination to build a new ‘floating world’ that is both environment-friendly and mobile. SEA OF OPPORTUNITIES “Nothing lasts forever, and in order to survive, we must adapt. Currently, there is a shortage of land, what if you could create more where it’s needed? The price of a barge is roughly one-third of the price of land of similar size in the capital cities of the world, and the barge already has the expensive infrastructure and foundation necessary to erect buildings on top,” says Amos Ahola, Director, communications and branding, Wärtsilä. He has been very interested in and fascinated by the concept of floating cities for quite some time now. Ahola had even pitched the idea of floating cities to Wärtsilä’s Venture Board, in 2017. His idea was one of the seven that were shortlisted (from a pool of 96 submissions) by the board.
“What if you could move the land around if and when needed? This would significantly reduce risks associated with the construction industry. Perhaps this opens an even bigger opportunity,” he wonders. THE SEASTEADING INSTITUTE The Seasteading Institute, a non-profit think tank (seed funded by Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal) has been working on the concept of creating settlements on the sea called ‘seasteads’ since a decade. It is in the midst of executing a pilot project to build a floating settlement with 300 homes along with the government of French Polynesia. “The cruise ship industry has already developed what I call pre-steading. Each cruise ship is self-governing by default. They often fly the flags of small countries like Panama or Liberia. Passengers sign a contract for onboard security and health care. If cruise ships floated permanently in international waters, they would be seasteads,” says Joe Quirk, author and communication director, The Seasteading Institute. “Oil rigs use a technology for floating permanently at sea, and cruise ships are a technology for self-governance at sea. If we combine these technologies, we could have seasteads floating permanently and governing at sea,” he adds. CRUISING TOGETHER Take for instance the case of the world’s largest private residential ship, ‘The World’. This 644 feet facility was launched in 2002 and has 165 residences for luxury vacations. ‘The World’ has circumnavigated the globe across several ports and exotic destinations. Residents of ‘The World’ own their individual residences and collectively own the ship. This ensures that they build their experiences based on the standards they choose themselves.
In the past, several other such projects including the Freedom Ship (a luxury seafaring vessel for 50,000 people to live, work, retire, vacation or visit with its own international airport) and the Lilypad, a self-sufficient floating city to provide shelter for future climate change refugees, have also been proposed. With more industries and sectors like energy, infrastructure, etc. looking at ‘floating structures’ as an option, the world as we know it will change in a big way. Ahola says, “Innovations will be centred around modular building and making the floating structures safe and steady in any weather. I believe that floating boroughs will start to grow around the world’s coastal cities in less than ten years.” WELCOME TO THE BLUE FRONTIER That, in turn, is expected to change the way future generations will live and behave. “Today’s toddlers will be known as the Aquatic Generation, and many of them will live in mobile, modular floating societies that allow them to detach from seasteads they don’t like and attach to those they do. Their start-up societies will set examples that will change the old land-based nations as significantly as Hong Kong changed China. Our grandchildren will consider our unsustainable land-based nations primitive because they will take for granted the innovations unleashed on the Blue Frontier,” says Quirk. Experts say this ‘floating world’ is a huge window of opportunity for the global shipbuilding and design industry which is mandatorily bound to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 as prescribed by the IMO early this year. Experts say that modular construction and 3D printing are helping speed things up in creating this new floating world. Thus, the new horizon is much closer to reality than envisioned before.
