HYMN Great is thy faithfulness, O God my father, There is no shadow of turning with thee: Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not, As thou hast been, thou for ever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness, great is thy faithfulness, Morning by morning new mercies I see, All I have needed thy hand hath provided, Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness, To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Great is thy faithfulness, great is thy faithfulness, Morning by morning new mercies I see, All I have needed thy hand hath provided, Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth; Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow: Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Great is thy faithfulness, great is thy faithfulness, Morning by morning new mercies I see, All I have needed thy hand hath provided, Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Thomas O Chisholm (1866-1960) Tune: Faithfulness

THE WELCOME We meet here today to give thanks to God for the lives of those lost at sea, and to remember with affection all those who have no known grave but the sea whose memory we cherish. As we pray for their families and friends and all who still grieve their death, we pledge ourselves to work for greater safety in all seafaring and to support all who work to save and preserve human life. We thank God for the work of the Maritime Foundation, and for all who have given so generously of their time and effort in founding the Memorial Book kept within this church. Especially this year we remember those lost at sea during the first World War, some whose names are recorded in the Memorial Book. In particular amongst the naval and merchant ship losses, we remember the centenary of the sinking of Lusitania which marked the start of the major offensive against allied shipping, and pray for those 1,191 passengers and crew who lost their lives when she was torpedoed off the south coast of Ireland. Ever-living God, we remember today all those whom you have gathered into the peace of your presence. We hold before you those who have lost their lives at sea, and for whom there is no known grave; those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Enfold them in the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and in the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen. HYMN O Jesus I have promised To serve thee to the end; Be thou for ever near me, My Master and my Friend; I shall not fear the battle If thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If thou wilt be my guide. O let me hear thee speaking In accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, To hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul. O Jesus, thou hast promised To all who follow thee, That where thou art in glory There shall thy servant be; And, Jesus, I have promised To serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, My Master and my Friend. O let me see thy footmarks, And in them plant mine own; My hope to follow duly Is in thy strength alone; O guide me, call me, draw me, Uphold me to the end; And then in heaven receive me, My Saviour and my Friend. John Bode (1816-74) Tune: Thornbury

HYMN The King of love my shepherd is, Whose goodness faileth never; I nothing lack if I am his, And he is mine for ever. 4

Where streams of living water flow, My ransomed soul he leadeth, And where the verdant pastures grow, With food celestial feedeth. Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, But yet in love he sought me, And on his shoulder gently laid, And home, rejoicing, brought me. In death's dark vale I fear no ill With thee, dear Lord, beside me; Thy rod and staff my comfort still, Thy cross before to guide me. Thou spread'st a table in my sight; Thy unction grace bestoweth; And O what transport of delight From thy pure chalice floweth! And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never: Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise Within thy house for ever. HW Baker (1821-1877) Tune: St Columba

THE ACT OF COMMEMORATION A procession forms and moves to the front of the Nave where a sheaf of flowers is laid by the Memorial Book We give thanks for all those whose names are recorded in this Memorial Book. We keep their memory alive in our hearts and minds, and pledge to work for a more peaceful world. Amen The British Trent bell will be rung in memory of all those lost at sea. 5

The procession returns to the pews During the following hymn there will be a collection for the work of The Maritime Foundation HYMN Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Saviour, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amid its rage didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O sacred Spirit, who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, Who bad’st its angry tumult cease, And gavest light and life and peace O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso’er they go: And ever let there rise to thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. William Whiting (1825-1878) Tune: Melita

THE BLESSING Go forth into the world in peace; be of good courage; hold fast that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honour everyone; love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit; And the blessing of God almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always. Amen.

Harris You are requested to sign the Visitor’s Book which will be at the back of the Church. The next Memorial Book Service will be held at All Hallows on Thursday 13 October 2016. Do take time to look at the Maritime Tapestry Exhibition in the South Aisle. Katie Russell is a tapestry weaver who explores maritime, architecture and nature themes, working with natural fibres on an upright loom to produce contemporary weavings using traditional techniques. This collection has been specially woven to commemorate those lost at sea and those who risk their lives rescuing others. 7

“For those in peril on the Sea” Over the centuries in both peace and war many men, women and children have died at sea. Most have no known grave or permanent memorial of their passing. The Memorial Book provides, without regard to creed or nationality, a memorial to loved ones who have died at sea so tragically and, where possible, records the circumstances. If you have a relative or friend who died in such circumstances, however long ago, and you would like to enter his or her name in the Memorial Book, please ask for an entry form. If there are any difficulties in completing the form, our historian will be pleased to help. A Remembrance Service is held each year for the families to commemorate those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. Details of the Service are announced in the press, and invitations are sent to the families and friends of those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is kept in the Mariners’ Chapel of All Hallows by the Tower Church on Tower Hill near the Pool of London. This is the central church of Toc H and has long been connected with the sea. A charge of £45 is made for placing each name in the Memorial Book. A hand-drawn facsimile extract of the entry, suitable for mounting and framing, is also provided. Any surplus arising after costs have been met will be used by the Maritime Foundation for education and training equipment to reduce accidents and loss of life at sea. LOST AT SEA APPEAL As part of the development of the Maritime Memorial Book, an appeal is underway to make these unique records available in an online database which future generations can access. The information set out in the Memorial Book will form the basis for the online database entry which will allow us to include more information about the loss, as well as images and documents of the particular circumstances and any historical context. If there is a historical significance, links will be included in an embedded blog to provide background information. As the database grows, we anticipate this will be of interest not only to the families and friends of their loved ones, but also to historians, archivists and educationalists. Setting this up requires a substantial front end investment, and so the Lost at Sea Appeal has been launched. The proceeds to date have been used to build a new website to accommodate the online database and to make a short film about the Memorial Book which can be viewed on the website. We hope you will feel able to support this appeal and help us to make the Memorial Book available to all, particularly to future generations. YEARS AHEAD But years ahead, years ahead, Who shall honour our sailor-dead? For the wild North Sea, the bleak North Sea, Threshes and seethes so endlessly. Gathering foam and changing crest Heave and hurry, and knows no rest: How can they mark our sailor-dead In the years ahead? Guy N Pockock
