HYMN O worship the King, all glorious above! O gratefully sing his power and his love! Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendour, and girded with praise. O tell of his might! O sing of his grace! Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, and dark is his path on the wings of the storm. The earth, with its store of wonders untold, Almighty, thy power hath founded of old, hath 'stablished it fast by a changeless decree, and round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea. O measureless Might, ineffable Love, while angels delight to hymn thee above, thy humbler creation, though feeble their lays, with true adoration shall sing to thy praise. Robert Grant (1779-1838) Tune: Hanover

THE WELCOME We meet here today to give thanks to God for the lives of those lost at sea, and to remember with affection all those who have no known grave but the sea whose memory we cherish. As we pray for their families and friends and all who still grieve their death, we pledge ourselves to work for greater safety in all seafaring and to support all who work to save and preserve human life. We thank God for the work of the Maritime Foundation, and for all who have given so generously of their time and effort in founding the Memorial Book kept within this church. Especially this year we remember those lost at sea during the first World War, some whose names are recorded in the Memorial Book. In particular amongst the naval and merchant ships lost, we remember the Battle of Jutland, the great naval battle of WW1, which lasted over 2 days, involved 250 ships with over 8,500 lost between the two sides. We also remember that deaths at sea continue to occur almost daily, most notably at the moment amongst the refugees who have been making the dangerous crossing from Turkey and Africa to Europe escaping fear and war. Some are known to have been lost, others were lost with no official recognition. We remember them all. Ever-living God, we remember today all those whom you have gathered into the peace of your presence. We hold before you those who have lost their lives at sea, and for whom there is no known grave; those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Enfold them in the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and in the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen. 2

HYMN Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age to same; his holy Name - the Lord, the Mighty One. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high. Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children's children and for evermore! Timothy Dudley-Smith (b 1926)

HYMN O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home: 4
Under the shadow of thy throne, thy saints have dwelt secure; sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone; short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away; they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.
O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guide while troubles last, and our eternal home! Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Tune: St Anne
THE ACT OF COMMEMORATION A procession forms and moves to the front of the Nave where a sheaf of flowers is laid by the Memorial Book We give thanks for all those whose names are recorded in this Memorial Book. We keep their memory alive in our hearts and minds, and pledge to work for a more peaceful world. Amen The British Trent bell will be rung in memory of all those lost at sea. 5
The procession returns to the pews During the following hymn there will be a collection for the work of The Maritime Foundation HYMN Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm doth bind the restless wave, Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O Saviour, whose almighty word The winds and waves submissive heard, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amid its rage didst sleep: O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea. O sacred Spirit, who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, Who bad’st its angry tumult cease, And gavest light and life and peace O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea.
O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them whereso’er they go: And ever let there rise to thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea. William Whiting (1825-1878) Tune: Melita

“For those in peril on the Sea” Over the centuries in both peace and war many men, women and children have died at sea. Most have no known grave or permanent memorial of their passing. The Memorial Book provides, without regard to creed or nationality, a memorial to loved ones who have died at sea so tragically and, where possible, records the circumstances. If you have a relative or friend who died in such circumstances, however long ago, and you would like to enter his or her name in the Memorial Book, please ask for an entry form. If there are any difficulties in completing the form, our historian will be pleased to help. A Remembrance Service is held each year for the families to commemorate those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. Details of the Service are announced in the press, and invitations are sent to the families and friends of those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. The Memorial Book is kept in the Mariners’ Chapel of All Hallows by the Tower Church on Tower Hill near the Pool of London. This is the central church of Toc H and has long been connected with the sea. A charge of £45 is made for placing each name in the Memorial Book. A hand-drawn facsimile extract of the entry, suitable for mounting and framing, is also provided. Any surplus arising after costs have been met will be used by the Maritime Foundation for education and training equipment to reduce accidents and loss of life at sea. LOSTATSEA.ORG.UK As part of the development of the Memorial Book, the Foundation has undertaken the digitisation of all the entries recorded in the book to enable future generations to access and discover some of the history behind each individual. Whilst the information entered in the Memorial Book is the basis for each online entry, the website can include a longer description as well as images, documents and charts relating to the particular circumstances of loss and any historical context. We will be inviting as many of those families as possible who have relatives or friends already entered to contribute any information they feel should be recorded. It is important to keep the memory of those lost at sea alive and accessible, particularly to future generations. As the Lost At Sea website expands, it will be of interest not only to the families and friends, but also to historians, archivists and educationalists. Funds from the Lost At Sea Appeal have been used to launch the website and make a short film which can be viewed online, but further funding will be needed for future development, adding additional information and maintaining the website. To access the records online, please visit www.lostatsea.org.uk ~
YEARS AHEAD But years ahead, years ahead, Who shall honour our sailor-dead? For the wild North Sea, the bleak North Sea, Threshes and seethes so endlessly. Gathering foam and changing crest Heave and hurry, and knows no rest: How can they mark our sailor-dead In the years ahead? Guy N Pockock 9
