Romantic Escapes Our top picks for two

A

s the saying goes, “in life, it’s not where you go, it’s who you travel with.” That’s the spirit in which our Maritime Travel destination wedding experts counsel couples planning a romantic getaway. “Helping plan one of the most important moments in a person’s life is such an honor,” says Laura Macdonald, Manager, Summerside, PE. “These days, it’s not just about weddings away and honeymoons. It’s all about celebrating your love in the most special way possible.” From having your own personal butler pouring champagne on your balcony, to romantic private dinners on the beach, to his-and-her massages in a world-class spa, there have never been

so many options for couples. Here are a few of our favourite romantic retreats.

Varadero, Cuba— Ocean Vista Azul “This is a lovely, compact resort with spacious rooms, awesome staff and decent food. The main hotel has seven buildings that surround the large main pool, while the lobby and Privilege rooms are perched on a clifftop with wonderful ocean views. A nice choice for a romantic getaway.” Recommended for you by Laura Macdonald, Manager County Fair Mall Summerside, PE 902-436-5213 lmacdonald@maritimetravel.ca

Cruising the Caribbean—our favourite itineraries

F

ascinating ports of call, unique island cultures, daytime adventures, sumptuous evening dining, and more fun times than you ever imagined. Welcome to the Caribbean. “For me, it’s all about the itineraries and ports of call. Each of the three Caribbean itineraries (east, south or west) offers a different kind of cruise experience,” says Margo Cormier, Maritime Travel advisor, Champlain Place, NB. Our other advisors agree. Here’s a look at the three different options, along with a top port pick for each itinerary.

Eastern Caribbean—7-Nights & Perfect Day cruise with Royal Caribbean Margo's Port Pick: The Bahamas— Nassau-Paradise Island Just 50 miles off the Florida coast, this sparkling island paradise is comprised of no fewer than 700 islets. This is also the destination where most cruise lines have their own private islands. The Bahamas are also home to the Caribbean’s largest casino, and to some of the liveliest nightlife to be found in the tropics. For daytime activities, the port of Nassau is vibrant and easy to navigate, offering beachfront activities and affordable shopping.

“South Florida, The Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, San Juan, and Tortola, and more. Most cruise lines offer this itinerary, which helps make it so popular. The sheer beauty of the beaches stand out for me on an Eastern Caribbean cruise. This area is great for first-timers.” Recommended for you by

Western Caribbean— 7-Night cruise with Celebrity Cruises

“San Juan, St. Lucia, Curacao, Dominica, Barbados, St. Kitts, to name a few. I love cruising this area. Visiting these islands on their own can be expensive. A cruise is an ideal and affordable way to take in these wonderful places. An added bonus is getting to experience French and West Indian cultures.” Recommended for you by

Claudia Steinmann

2485 King George Highway, Unit 15 Miramichi, NB 506-622-1100 csteinmann@maritimetravel.ca

Claudia’s Port Pick: Castries (St. Lucia) While the pretty port of St. Lucia sees its fair share of visitors, this verdant isle remains largely unspoiled, thanks to the locals’ commitment to protecting its rain forests and other natural resources. In fact, a good chunk of the island (approximately 19,000 acres) is protected as part of the St. Lucia National Rain Forest. But beyond its natural beauty and heavenly beaches, this tiny island-nation also offers up lots of cultural and cosmopolitan color, particularly in the area around Castries, the lively capital city.

“Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Cozumel, Key West, San Juan, and more. The off-ship activities are great on a Western Caribbean cruise. There is so much to see and do, from visiting Mayan ruins in Mexico to some of the best snorkelling and diving imaginable in Cozumel and the Caymans.” Recommended for you by Larissa Newell, Manager Main Level Confederation Court Mall Charlottetown, PE 902-566-3332 lnewell@maritimetravel.ca

Larissa’s Port Pick: Cozumel, Mexico Cozumel may be small in stature—it’s just 28 miles long and 10 miles wide— but this diminutive tropical retreat punches above its weight when it comes to attractions, both natural and man-made. Aside from great shopping– you can cut some sweet deals on things like Mexican handicrafts, jewelry and other souvenirs–Cozumel offers incredibly diverse options for watersports aficionados, thanks to its proximity to the world’s second-largest barrier reef.
