Long considered one of the best values in the Caribbean, this vibrant Caribbean oasis is also popular for its warm and friendly people, its first-class beachfront resorts, and its rich cultural heritage. That cultural heritage is epitomized by Santo Domingo on the south coast, both the country capital and the oldest city in the New World. To the east of Santo Domingo lies Punta Cana, offering palm-fringed beaches, championship golf, and impressive, all-inclusive resort complexes. northwest of Punta Cana, the newer resort area of Samana is beckoning visitors with its unspoiled beaches and its get-awayfrom-it-all atmosphere. Meanwhile, Puerto Plata, on the north coast, has a more European flavor, attracts an international crowd and is a top watersports destination. But whichever destination you choose, you can count on a warm and friendly welcome, some great Caribbean culture and some of the best beach fun and relaxation this side of winter. Bon voyage!

lessed with some 50 kilometers of soft white sand kissed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, Punta Cana is nothing short of paradise. A pretty offshore reef, lots of rustling palms and lush, unspoiled countryside complete the idyllic picture. The Punta Cana / Bavaro area is made up almost exclusively of lovely all-inclusive resorts geared toward couples and families. Some resorts in the area cater to sports-minded visitors (the area boasts several championship golf courses, including one designed by Jack Nicklaus in the Cap Cana area); others are couplesonly. But most resorts focus on family entertainment. Everything you need is on-site in your resort community and you need never even venture outside the gates unless you want to explore the deserted beaches and coconut groves that stretch as far as the eye can see.

ush tropical vegetation and long stretches of golden sand framed by the majestic Isabel de Torres mountain set the scene for a thrilling vacation in Puerto Plata. Scenically situated in the middle of what’s known as the Amber Coast, Puerto Plata is the most established resort area in the country and also the most-visited. It is known for great value. Many Canadian travellers choose the Playa Dorada area of Puerto Plata as their home base, largely because of its wide, sandy beach, attractive low-rise resorts and comprehensive entertainment and sports facilities. An 18-hole championship golf course, a large shopping center and a smattering of casinos are also open to guests of those resorts located within the complex. Meanwhile, in downtown Puerto Plata, you can visit a casino, a disco, or the San Felipe Fort, one of the oldest forts in the New World. A breathtaking view of the city can be had aboard a cable car which travels up Isabel de Torres Mountain.

Destination Dominican Republic Be in the know before you go! Electricity: The voltage in the DR is 110V (the same as North America) and the plugs typically used are the two-flatprong type. Dress Code: A la carte restaurants at your all-inclusive resort usually have a dress code in effect for dinner, which generally means long pants for men and no swimwear or bare feet. Calling Home: Each hotel has its own procedures for long-distance calls. Check with the tour representative at your hotel for the cheapest way to make calls. Some Canadian calling cards work (but not always) and you can also purchase prepaid phone cards at many hotels. Credit card calls are generally the most expensive option.
Water: It is advisable to drink only purified water when in the Dominican Republic. The resorts profiled in this brochure use purified water for washing and preparing food, for serving in restaurants and for making ice cubes. Do not drink the tap water in your hotel room; the hotel will provide bottled water for your use.
Best Buys: Amber, 14K and 18K gold, and the Dominican Republic’s own semiprecious stone, larimar (found only in the D.R.) are all excellent buys. Rum is also a local specialty. Dominican cigars have been growing in popularity and gaining ground on their Cuban cousins. They are widely available and you can even tour cigar-making operations. Spanish Phrases: Ask your counsellor for tips on Spanish phrases.
