Facts & Figures Entering Mexico To enter Mexico, Canadians require a valid passport and a tourist card. Language Spanish, but English is widely spoken. Currency While Mexico has had a very liberal acceptance of US dollars for decades, with recent laws, the use of American Dollars (CASH) to make purchases in Mexico changed. Other payment methods such as credit cards of all types and all issuing banks, Travelers Checks, Mexican pesos and non-American foreign currencies (such as Euros or Canadian Dollars) are NOT affected. Please note: • Hotels and Exchange Booths, and Local Banks are able to change a maximum of $1,500 USD CASH per person per month into Mexican Pesos. • Businesses (including restaurants, shops, and DMC’s) only accept a maximum of $100 USD CASH per transaction – but the number of transactions per customer is not restricted. • Certain businesses may not be able to, or may choose not to accept American Dollars for any purchase at all (this may include shops, etc.), however they are still accepting Mexican Pesos. • If a customer wants to purchase an excursion (for example) that costs $150 US dollars per person, customers will only be able to pay $100 of this amount in USD CASH and the remainder will need to be in another form of payment (credit card, Mexican pesos, etc). • Airlines are advising that within Mexico, they will only accept Mexican Pesos and credit cards for any fees (including baggage fees). Vacationers should never carry large amounts of American dollars with them abroad, but instead they should consider either using a Credit Card, taking or locally withdrawing Mexican Pesos from an ATM (very easy and convenient), or use Traveller’s Checks (of any currency). Miles of Adventure

There are dozens of exciting things to do in Cancun and along the Riviera Maya. Here are some of our top picks. Contact your tour operator representative or hotel tour desk to arrange excursions.

The Call of the Wild

Discover your inner naturalist in Cancun and the Riviera Maya, where wildlife abounds on land and sea. Safeguarding hundreds of species of flora and fauna, the massive biosphere reserve of Sian Ka’an (just south of Tulum) is an eco-tourist’s dream. Ditto for the fabulous nature reserves of Contoy (an island and birding paradise), Rio Lagartos and Calakmul. Closer to home, the privately-owned ecoarcheological park of Xcaret beckons with its pristine freshwater cenotes (natural sink holes), incredible snorkelling inlet, and plethora of local wildlife including a tropical aquarium, dolphins (yes, you can swim with them!), butterfly pavilion and more. Stay for the Xcaret at Night show!

Unlock the Mayan Mystery

If you’re awed by archeology, then you’re in for a treat. Cancun and the Riviera Maya are smack dab in the heart of what’s known as the Maya World, the area inhabited by the ancient Maya civilization more than 3000 years ago. At the peak of their cultural development (200900 AD), the Maya were leagues ahead of their contemporaries anywhere, constructing massive temples and ceremonial centers that rival the Egyptian pyramids. Today, many of the ruins of these once thriving centers are within easy travelling distance of Cancun and the Riviera Maya. One of the most famous, Chichen Itza,

is only a few hours away and makes for an excellent day trip. This excursion is available from most hotels. The pretty cliff top ruins of Tulum are also great for photo ops. Don’t forget your bathing suit! There are loads of other activities available such as swimming with the dolphins, zip lining through the trees – even polo. More details can be found at www.cancun.travel

Go Golf Clubbing

The golf magazines are singing its praises and there’s no doubt that Cancun and the Riviera Maya are quickly becoming a top golf destination. Golf here is a marriage of spectacular scenery, ancient magic and modern design, a combination that lures the creative talents of such world-class designers as Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Jack Nicklaus. There are more than six top-class courses in the area with more to come. Most are members of the Mexican Caribbean Golf Course Association.

Do Some Island Hopping

Once the exclusive activity of the well-heeled and famous, island-hopping in the Caribbean is now an inexpensive and thrilling jaunt from Cancun and the Riviera Maya. Underwater enthusiasts should hop straight to the island of Cozumel, the dive capital of the Mexican Caribbean which is conveniently located just a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen. For a more laid-back island experience, check out Isla Mujeres (Spanish for the Island of Women), a lovely tropical retreat accessible by ferry from Playa del Carmen or Puerto Morelos (north of Cancun) and from Cancun’s Hotel Zone.

tate-of-the-art shopping centers, thrilling nightlife, an extraordinary range of restaurants, and every land or water sport ever conceived — cosmopolitan Cancun has it all. But what really sets Mexico’s premier Caribbean destination apart is its incredible tropical setting amidst 14 miles of bone-white sand kissed by the azure waters of the Caribbean. Connected to the mainland by two bridges, this tiny island shaped like a “7” is host to more than three million vacationers a year who come to enjoy its unparalleled beaches, delectable dining, superb shopping and pulsating nightlife. Windsurfing, water skiing, sailing, jet skiing, snorkelling and scuba diving are just some of the activities laid on for sports enthusiasts, while landlubbers can enjoy a pleasant round of golf at one of the area courses. And for those intrigued by the mysteries of the ancient Maya, Cancun even boasts its own small Mayan ruins, El Rey.
