How: Collaboration, Education, Experience, Inspiration, Intuition Why Everything is architecture Hello, my name is Marjan Sarab. I graduated from university of art in Tehran, Iran, in June 2010 after receiving my bachelor’s in urban design and planning. In September 2010, I got admitted in university of Eindhoven in architecture and 2 years after, in August 2012 I received my master in architecture.

importantly they gave me the opportunity to work in a team both as a leader or otherwise be cooperative, and I realized how to centralize group efforts to reach a better result as a team.

I believe that design is a fullcircle, collaborative process that should involve multiple discipline. Furthermore, I believe in making goals and working hard to complete those goals, the importance of an I grow up in metropolitan, with unbreakable system of family and approximately 12 million inhabitants. friends, and that a good (or bad) Since childhood I have been an joke can fix just about anything. active artist, curious learner, an are nowadays intensive worker and a performer. Onde r de Leid ing straat Who: Marjan Sarab What: Design, impression, technical drawings Where: Eindhoven, Netherlands How: Sketchup, AutoCad, InDesign Why Close to Eindhoven’s city centre lays Strijps, an industrial terrain with rich history. In walking distance from main building, onder de leidingstraat is locate. onder de leidingstraat is a cafe and supermarket where all the products are organic. The design of cafÊ is simple. In order to give a special experience, kitchen has been placed in the middle. So everyone can see how their food is being made. Nevertheless, different levels of counter give a comfort for to both workers and consumers depending on the services. The character of industrial building has been saved by keeping the floor, ceiling and walls untouched. The architectural elements are white while life floats in colors of furniture and greenery which is used a decoration. Photo credits: www.petitepassport.com en www.boudewijnbollmann.nl

VI P Foyer Who: Marjan Sarab + Arie van Rangelrooy (architecten|en|en) What: Design, impression, technical drawings Where: Eindhoven, Netherlands How: Sketchup, AutoCad, InDesign Why Parktheater is the cultural center of Eindhoven. The new building is built by Architecten-en-en in 2007.In 2013 Architecten-en-en were asked to design the interior of a space to become a working space while be flexible to events. This project has been done in collaboration and under supervision with Architecten-en-en.

users can take coffee or tea while on the times of events there can be a bar.

The design is playful. The main element is the table. Tables go around and turn to add to privacy of users while working and difference in level of tables make it possible to sit or work, or for kids to play. As the matter of the fact the design is friendly for kids. They can climb up the tables, or draw on the lower level which is perfect table height for them or even slide! In addition there are shelves to house the books from libraries that went closed. To make the space flexible to events and co mfortable for working long hour, a corner is devoted for bar. Therefore on normal time

E xp at C entr e Who: Marjan Sarab + Arie van Rangelrooy (architecten|en|en) What: Design, impression, technical drawings Where: Eindhoven, Netherlands How: Sketchup, AutoCad, Photoshop, InDesign Why Expat centre is an part of Expat Boulevard for VDMA terrein in the centre of Eindhoven. The Expat Boulevard concept is about creating a centre for expat who come to Eindhoven to live, work or study. All needs and support systems (housing, social events, practical information, food courts, parkings) for expats are constrated into a location in the centre of Eindhoven. Expat Centre is the second stage of project which is completed after Hub for Expats. Expat Centre is an organization supported by govements of Eindhoven to provide the govermental and practical help for Expats. Nevertheless, they organize social events and workshop. Expat centre was located next to the station of Eindhoven. The interior design of the first location was an competition. However, they needed to move to a new location by 2015. Therefore, Architecten-en-en thought and design a new location for the office. the design princeple is to try to make the room looks bigger, therefore color of white and simplicity in design was encourge.

The street side have been saved for the most vivid function of the office, the offices and the small kitchen corner while the back side is devoted for the management office and meeting room.

N ew Th ialf Who: Marjan Sarab + ZJA What: Design, impression, technical drawings Where: Heerenveen, Netherlands How: Revit, Cinema4D, Photoshop, InDesign Why Thialf is the biggest ice-skating stadium and one of the most impotant in the world. Duo to the age of the current building, the quality of ice have been jeopardized. Therefore on 2013 there was a design competition held for the New Thialf. On 2013 Zwarts & Jansma architecten won the competition. the design was started on beginning 2014 and delivary time was end of the year for the construction to be started on February 2015 and ready to use for the winter season on 2016. The new design only uses the exiciting construction, basement and some parts from grand floor. The main concept is for all the important functions to be around and have the view to ice, while functions such as traffic spaces and toilets are pushed to the facade. The new Thilaf’s form follows its function. The facade express the ice in an abstract way. An extra level has been added to the building and also all the vertical traffic function that are now outside of buidling will go inside the shell of the new building.

The circulation space for the tribune where the bars and cafes are located, also has an secondary functions as the museum which shows the pictures and history of Thialf.

Because of confidentiality of client and ZJA it is not allowed to reveal plans. However the work I have done in Revit can be summarize in following:

Thialf has successed to intergrate architectural, installation and technical approach in order to have the best quality of ice; a design where the components up to reinforce each other: a building skating experience and perception facilitates optimal, a central plant concept, smart constructionn and installation technical zoning with ‘everything to the ice, “modular design, a durable, (largely) self energy concept and a building with the necessary flexibility.

-

Quick and easy installation make it possible for systems and spaces to be moved, resized, added and/or replaced. The multipurpose use second floor is a good example. A mono-functional building in which everything revolves around the ice, but multifunctional. This results in a new Thialf an unprecedented level: an ice stadium of enduring quality. This project has been developed in phases of primary, definitive and technical design by ZJA architecten in 2014.

Swimming Pool Who: Marjan Sarab + ZJA What: Design, impression, technical drawings Where: Hardenberg, Netherlands How: Revit, Photoshop Why On June 26 2013, the official go-ahead for the construction of the new sport centre in Hardenberg was published. Zwarts & Jansma Architects designed swimming pool is an integral part of Hardenberg’s new Sportboulevard. The Sportboulevard consists of an athletics accommodation, a beach court for beach sports, a new indoor swimming pool and a sports hall. The new pool is organized in a way that the lawn and the two basins are oriented to the south. Functions such as changing rooms, stores and restaurants are located on the north and can be shared in the future with other sports hall. The new pool is with clear and transparent structure, establishes a direct relationship between indoor and outdoor space. This glass plinth runs from the entrance into the wall on the lawn. The building consists of two main halls with pools, first is a multipurpose hall with a toddler and paddling, the other with a competition pool.

ground has been an concerns since there is a lot of differece in elevation. However, This level difference has been used to the advantage and contributes to spatial perception while creates strong sight lines across the different pools. The design for the new pool is a sustainable self-evident. In addition to an optimal tuning of systems for heating and air conditioning involves Pool Hardenberg residual heat from the nearby pipe manufacturer Wavin for its energy supply. The swimming pool will be ready for the use on June 2016. Because of confidentiality of client and ZJA It is not allowed to reveal plans. However the work I have done in Revit can be summarize in following: - plans, section and elevation - tiles plans, ceiling plan - detailing - renders - fragment drawings

Ground floor has been completely opened up to let light and life float. The large living room is situated on the garden side with a central fire place which is a BBQ from the garden side. Living kitchen and work room are in front side of the house to get the most day light. Through a wide vide one ends up in first floor with three bedrooms, a walking closet and a large bathroom. The old ceiling has been removed to add up to the surface of bedroom by creating an entresol while show casing the beautiful roof structure. Nevertheless the master bedroom gets a door to open up to a possible roof terrace. This project has been asked by owner and duo to amount of work is in collaboration of Bygg Architects.

F l exp lek Who: Marjan Sarab What: Design, impression, technical drawings Where: Eindhoven, Netherlands How: Sketchup, AutoCad, InDesign Why Located in the heart of Strijp-S, lies Flexplek. It is a hive of activities where professionals come together for meetings and group-collaboration sessions. Seeing its unique location at the heart of the city and the fact that it is still largely intact, the design leaves it in its actual state instead of completely upgrading, refurbishing and refinishing the interiors. This means the only change on the actual skin of the building will be a simple painting. The floors, ceiling and walls all be painted in wall in order to get the light. However to create a certain sense of scale a linear paint of dark grey has been installed in coordination of height where windows cut the walls. The darker grey continues to be the floor paint in the reception space to create a continuity in design. In this process the scrapes and scratches will be preserved. In this way space starts to slowly re-invent itself in harmony with the space that it was, without it losing its essence. In a vast space bathing in light, a generously-sized central room serves as the main collaboration and work space, while smaller side rooms act as meeting, media, office and workshop for laser cutter and printer. Thanks to movable folding

door partitions, the line between these semi-private and public areas blurs, which in time of no use, makes it difficult to distinguish them. However, the surprise of the design is ability for alternation. The floor plan can be altered by request of users/employers; there is a simple reason for this alteration. This becomes possible through a simple but smart system for the movable world for exhibitions. Movable worlds are not only movable and removable but also changeable. Since it is an installation attached to ceiling. As to keep the place untouched, all the installation on ceiling are painted in white and visible. A New installation will be applied which consist of a series of rails attached to the ceiling and the movable worlds, in different shapes, materials and ways will be hang from them. First of all, the installations on the ceiling create boundary between existing installations and secondly, in time of no collection to show, it will not be seen as something is missing. Therefore all the furniture has wheels, so in these times there can be a different arrangement for rooms to create diversity and sufficient use of space. Thirdly, the users get power to change the space base on their need to adjust lighting, views or privacy. On the

other hand the room is a dream space for any exhibition. A new layout and path can be created through each collection. The plan is as temporary or permanent as the exhibition. It can be changed in a fingertip control. Therefore architecture becomes a way for a community action. In the main space the only walls seems to be the movable panels to show the permanent collection of materials while separating the lunch area; and they are made out of a transparent poly carbonate. Between these translucent partitions through the space, the goal is to create a floating zone; a large place which one can work, socializes, or benefit from the collection. Of course there are dedicated areas such as laser cutter and silence rooms, but these are shelves. What is emphasized is the blank space, the areas without signs; in the usual language of architecture it means corridors, halls, lobbies. Here the maximum numbers of the function are attributed into a border-less space, leaving rooms for future uses which no one thought about. What holds the plan is the furnisher mostly made from materials by “Baars en Bloemhoff. However it is important to capture a certain raw and industrial feeling to the room. This has been done

by use an untraditional element which will be unique in interior design for Strijp-S. It is chosen to use wooden fruit crates, as it adds to raw and rough essence of industrial world. They are turned to chairs, supports, shelves, bar and reception desk. The lounge area is created on the centre of room to give a relax feeling to others. It has been elevated by position it on movable podiums while it is closed by movable panels with magazines and books on them to reduce social control. Everything is simple. The curve of the working tables in contrast with rough and heavy industrial tables of workshop, The rawness of fruit crates in contrast of a modern folding partition, Much more than a shared work space, Flexplek, with its multifunctional capacity, has a goal to be one of the go-to-spaces in Eindhoven for cultural and social activities too, presentations, seminars and maybe even courses; a way for a global community of people make a place like to other place in Strijp-S. It will be bold and well-adjusted, unique and local at the same time. But most importantly it generates life around and within it, as life in dynamic Strijp-S evolves so will the Flexplek.

“ po d Rotund ą”! Who: Marjan Sarab + Tim Kouthoofd + Piotr Szczesniak What: Main Designer Where: Warsaw, Poland How: AutoCAD + Sketchup + VRay + Photoshop + InDesign Why Changing the face of Rotunda is a challenge; even more since it is an icon, so closely related to memory and history. The main question for this design is how to change the face by keeping it at the same time and respect the history and its memory. How is it possible to create a memory inside the memory? The following design introduces a cut in a building without denying any element of the building. The cut is clean and clear and the cut out piece is treated with respect, by placing it in front to create a gathering forum for the city. Moreover, the two pieces together will feed the memory of what the building used to look like before. Through this design, the building becomes a collective architecture; inside and outside. The newly defined outside public space attracts people inside through the cut, where they will find a multi-functional

66

inside public space. This space represents the core of bringing people together, with the use of media façade technology, to gain a new dimension. At the same time providing an exciting design for the bank office, fitting all its needs, in an embracing gesture around the public core. This is a design which creates memory, with complete preservation of earlier memory, and at the same time it smartly incorporates sustainable solutions. This building is a public space, rather than a building. It becomes a view point, a pavilion, a space of exchange, an exhibition space, a gathering point, a stage for people and their audience. But most importantly, by the collective memory of the users, the building generates life around and within it. As life in city evolves so does Rotunda. It becomes a true iconic gate, when people can once again say: Let’s meet “pod Rotundą”!

The school is hosting students from 3 months old up to 12 years old. Not only normal kids go to school but also handicaps. Therefore, one important element of design was to make a compact plan which can fit to the needs of each age and abilities. The most important part of the design is the heart (which consists of aual, gym and administration functions) of the building where the rest of the functions organized around it.

St a r v ing for Pe r fec t i on Who: Marjan Sarab What: Impression, Graphical Design, Presentation Where: Eindhoven, Netherlands How: Photoshop + InDesign Why Iranian architecture displays great variety, both structural and aesthetic, developing gradually and coherently out of prior traditions and experience. Without sudden innovations, and despite the repeated trauma and cultural shocks, it has achieved “an individuality distinct from that of other Muslim countries”. There is: “a marked feeling for form and scale; structural inventiveness, especially in vault and dome construction; decoration and art form with a freedom and success not rivaled in any other architecture”.

Nijmegen 2012 When: October 2012 - November 2013 , 2 months Where: ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands How: Illlustrator + Designing Why I have got invited by reSET architecten to join them for this competition as a urban designer. The dike relocation in Lent will result in a 200 meter wide secondary channel with left and right of the bridge an island Veur Lent and between the Waal Bridge and the railway bridge an island. At low tide, these two islands are connected. Veur Lent is incriminated for buildings while between the new city bridge crossing the railway bridge and an island serving festivities is realized. From 2014 – when the secondary channel is completed – these islands shaped. The whole has a length of 1600 meters. Between these redesigned headland and the historic town lies the Waal with a width of 300 meters. The doubling of the Waal and the development of the city is the largest island national project in the framework of Space for the river. Around 2025, the entire project was completed Nijmegen. The purpose of the contest Design a city island is a contribution to the debate on the content and design of the new shape island. It aims to creativity designers and administrators around these themes to excite. The results are enablers in an urban debate involving the interested Nijmegen may be involved.

Who: Marjan Sarab What: An Iconic Urban Leisure Zone + Media + Hotel When: September 2011 - August 2012 - 12 months Where: Cologne, Germany How: Site Visit, Research, Analysis, Models, Sketchup, Auto CAD, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Kerkythea Why In the center of Cologne, lies Heumarkt, a square with a rich history. Between Heumarkt and Rhine, Maritime Hotel is located. In the current situation there is a tension between traffic, Heumarkt, hotel and promenade. Heumarkt is no longer a complete square, function of promenade is lost, traffic does not create an appealing urban environment, Maritime Hotel represents a huge scale in its context which currently is not fitting. The proposal is to convert the “no man’s land that currently is an island to a new way of active and public life. This happens not through outlining each of them, in reverse to expand the public activities to the city, creating a blurred transformation from urbanity to architecture and landscape. The hotel, roads, metro and river will allow the site for a multi programming, hybrid activities and most importantly increased interaction between people and programs. A multi functional building which combines

public and private, visitor and residents, commercial and culture function is a single location in heart of cologne. Shops, restaurant, cultural events on the first levels of hotel bonded with to Rhine River from of one side and the other side a public plaza and connection between metro station, hotel and parking. Hotel rooms will be on the higher levels and everything is expending out to the roof garden and outdoor traces for everybody. Like a contemporary interpretation of the archway or passage, the hotel forms a generous cover for the public life beneath and creates a diverse experience when moving in or around the building. The building is an urban space, rather than a building, and will Be bold and well-adjusted, unique and local at the same time. But most importantly building generates life around and within it, as life in city evolves so will the Maritim hotel. Maritim Hotel will be a gate and a point of reference for the city. What is a gate, but a significant point you pass?

Who: Marjan Sarab What: Cooking Academy, Urban Garden, Market, Kitchen and Dining Room for the Community When: Winter 2011 - 5 months Where: Helmond, Netherlands How: Site Visit, Master Plan, Vectorworks , Models, Sketchup, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Kerkythea, Sketchup Why The project is about reusing the industrial canal in city of Helmond that soon will run out of business. After the site visit, the way of movement stroked me. It was a contradiction to what a canal and waterfront should be... A leisure and natural site which is pleasant to walk along. By mapping the movements rage, the areas for redesigning became into attention which the master plan was its result. The most urgent location was chosen to be design. The location is the end point of the route. Since the main functions there are a supermarket and a food museum, it has been decided to use all the elements in the site to turn it to a Food Campus.

one common interest: Food. And use this opportunity to teach them everything about food and be a rural area in middle of the city. One can choose to buy ingredients from supermarket or the market of urban agricultural land, go to food museum, learn how to cook or actually study cooking to become a chef, plant vegetable, or go to a slow food restaurant on the roof top. The lost industry can turn to a new and active one. The combination of functions would be urban agriculture, reuse water tower for irrigation, food market, food museum, slow food restaurant and cooking academy.

The meaning of food is an exploration of culture through food. What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it, who’s at the table and who eats first is a form of communication that is rich with meaning. This site along the Canal of Helmond wants to attract people and bring them closer with

Revolution of Architectural Perfection and Nature Adaptation Who: Marjan Sarab What: Green Architecture Competition - Concepts and Strategies When: Winter 2011 - 1 Week Where: Any where How: Hand sketching, InDesign, Photoshop

Why The territories of the cities are over loaded. As it has been said in the competition itself extreme land uses in urban make it impossible to develop green spaces in low costs. The solutions such as green roofs and green facades seem like a good plan although they are not open to public. Also growing towards the villages and open space, is not a good option anymore. So the question is “why change when we can adopt? If the purpose of a green development is to bring back the biodiversity that have been lost through the human actions, the perfect location would be empty abounded space inside/edge or outside of the cities. In landscape and urban landscape, there are buildings (usually big scale) which have been abounded; such as offices, hotels, industrial buildings and etc. These buildings would cost any municipalities a large amount of money to destroy or renovate it for a new function. So the result is some human leftovers with no use, empty, waste spaces and sometimes dangerous and pretty noticeable. When these buildings are located outside of the cities, in a normal situation, the nature will claim them and take over them. Nature has the power to take over man-

made architecture; slowly. What if, we start the same process and this time by help of our technologies speed it up and make a pure and wild green development with species that can produce products for industries such as medicine, food and simply add quality to city, its surrounding and our landscapes as a source of oxygen and beauty. No one can deny the need of land within the cities in the urbanism century. Whether we want or not, our cities need to develop horizontally or vertically which both have disadvantages. If a city is trying to grow towards the green spaces outside of the city, we can also do the other way around. Let the nature grow into the city in its pure and wild look. The whole world can look like a big city and at the same time a big jungle. By this solution we can have: - Sustainable use of empty facilities, - Public Green Space, - Attraction for some functions that can use the space such as schools, - A break through from the routine, - A force to make new occupiers use the green space later on. The intention of this proposal is actually make a concept of a harsh vs. harsh; manmade vs. nature. The influence of this method in the future would be revealed in

designing of each building. It is a next step to green architecture to think in designing process with the consideration how nature can take over it and how it should look like; whether if it is abounded or occupied. In this way we will grow our own jungle in the city. Next generation of architects will be educated by such rule to consider an organic or designed green space. The Green Architecture will start to grow with the buildings themselves. No matter of function or type of architecture, they will adopt to accept green in designs. Soon will be no concern about green spaces since the green and city grow together. So in the opinion of the writer, green developments, should become wild and pure as an impression of Relief of nature from the core of city and architectural elements. Relief as alleviation, ease or deliverance through the removal of pain or stress. Relief as money, food or other help given to cities in poverty or need of Green. Relief as something affording a pleasing change, as from monotony. This is a revolution of Architectural Perfection and Nature Adaptation.

Fun Fa c tor y Who: Marjan Sarab What: A Series of Small Intervention to make a Big Change When: Fall 2011 - 2 weeks Where: Helmond, Netherlands How: Site Visit, Master Plan, Models, 3D MAX, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop Why On November 2011, Elir workshop occurred in university of Eindhoven. It was an international workshop for two weeks. Participating Universities were included: Universita’degli Studi di Firenze,Facolta’di Ingegneria, Italy Gazi University Ankara, Turkey Lusofona University of Humanity and Technology Lisbon, Portugal Hafen City Universität Hamburg, Germany Zachodniopomorski Uniwersytet Technologiczny Wszczecinie, Poland University of Technology Tampere, Finland Universität Innsbruck, Austria Associated Universities University of Oregon, USA

In this workshop, every student would be in random group with a random teacher from different universities.

project. So I applied for that and I was one of the lucky 5 students from Eindhoven to be attending the workshop. Communication and leading were important factors in the workshop.

a

Amazingly, I end up in the group for Helmond! The exact city I worked before. The experience of the design was highly interesting fro me. I worked on the same site form 5 month but now I should have forgot every piece of my design and start from zero and come up with a new design strategy. Nevertheless, I got to work with brick. I visited a brick factory and build my own brick and later that week, we had a group challenge to design and build a brick arc with 200 brick in 4 hours. At the end of the challenge we would put weight on the arc and a bicycle should cycle under it. The result was surprising even for me! Just a complication for my previous design.

The workshop was about industrial waterfronts in Netherlands and reusing them in a sustainable way.

The experience was also highly valuable for me , since I automatically became a leader and presenter of the group.

After my design for industrial canal, I was really interested to work on another similar

Who: Marjan Sarab What: Extension to a Museum When: Fall 2010 - 5 Months Where: Liege, Belgium How: Model, Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop, AutoCAD,Sketchup Why MAMAC Museum (museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts) is located in Liege, Belgium. The museum has a changing and a permanent collection, but due to the restrictions in size of the building, the permanent collection can never be shown. Therefore an extension is needed. However, this extension does not need to only extend the size of the museum; it must also improve the international status of the museum. The museum has expressed ambitions to enlarge its international influence, starting with its name, Centre International d’Art et de Culture; CIAC. The design tries to make a bond between the building and natural surrounding. It is a tree house, giving another dimension to the park. Main characteristics of the extension are as following: - Sequences of the spaces - Possibility for other activities such as music concert, performance and ‌ - Established together in urban environment - Views and perspectives

Who: Marjan Sarab What: Electronic and Computer Trade Center When: Summer 2011 - 2 Month Where: Tehran, Iran How: Hand Sketching,, Photoshop Why TEC, Electronic and Computer Trade Center, is a sustainable and sufficient solution for a electrical center. This project was a competition entry from my home town that works with solar energy. A whole facade is removed and replace by roof which is entirely made from solar panels. Since 90% days in Tehran are sunny, the building becomes energy free from any other source. Inside has been design as a landscape. Routes going down and up between trees, creating a air circulation and different perspectives. The building contain functions such as: Sale and distribution spaces, Lab, Book and magazine shop, Resting area, Security, Cafe, The rest of the space, which is the major of the space, is occupied with circulation and gardens.

Who: Marjan Sarab What: Design various parks When: 2007 Where: Various locations How: Hand sketching Why The projects are about designing parks with different criteria’s only using mind and hand. All are neighborhood parks but with different clients. All are different but at the same time follow a certain design elements to make them a complex. The design is to be adjusted for different parks in one small city. The first one is a neighborhood with more elderly. In result the park doesn’t change height. It is easy to find you route and it has sitting areas with shadows. The second one, is a children neighborhood park. Therefore, design become more playful. The third one, is for young adults. The design is still playful but also more quiet with facilities such as book shop.

Who: Marjan Sarab What: Design various entrances When: 2007 Where: Various locations How: Hand sketching Why The projects are about designing entrance with different criteria’s only using mind and hand. The first one, “Eram Garden Entrance“ is about an entrance for a monumental palace and its garden. Here the initial of the original design for the garden and palace has been implanted in the entrance in a contemporary way. Using natural elements in order to make a continues connection between entrancegarden-palace is necessary. Nevertheless water and green are a traditional element in Iranian architecture. Bringing different rhythms in movements is

the design basis such as creating curiosity, perspective and pause places. The second one, is a entrance to a mosque (not a specific one). Water along the route trying to make the soul pure to enter the mosque. Also the entrance being inside walls make it a quite space. Third entrance, is about an entrance to a housing complex. Being organic and its connection to street and its happening is important element here. Also bring various patterns and design to break through the routines is the basis of design.
