Final Thesis Presentation: “Showcasing Designers at Work
Mark Riemitis graduated from Wentworth
Institute of Technology in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. During his course of study at WIT, Mark worked for a sole-propreiter architect as well as a large commercial architecture and engineering firm. He then began his Master Degree at the Boston Architectural College where he participated in an arraignment of community design projects including an abandoned police renovation for affordable housing for veterans, and pool therapy addition to an elementary school for children with disabilities. Mark was also involved in a design and build project producing an outdoor interactive classroom for a local school. He graduated from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 2013 with a Master of Architecture. He will continue to participate in the collaboration of Architecture and Design as he builds on the passion.

NATATORUM PROJECT MAGAZINE PARK CAMBRIDGE, MA
The Natatorium Project was located on the bank of Magazine Park along the Charles River in Boston, MA. The large site surrounded by the water’s edge, ball fields, urban park, and city neighborhood has an arrangement of open spaces and wooded areas. While investigating the site on a hot summer day, I noticed the shaded wooded areas created a play of light and shadow streaming through the trees and vegetation. I was fascinated by the calmness of the wooded areas and the spaces broken between each patch of trees. My concept of the natatorium is to re-create the serene effect of the sunlight passing through the branches of the foliage surrounding the site.

SATELLITE MASSART CAMPUS DESIGN STUDIO HARVARD SQ., CAMBRIDGE, MA
The Satellite Campus Project was an investigation of the culture and dynamic of Harvard Square, with the combination of connecting the context to MassArt. Passing through the narrow paths linking the main streets in Harvard Square forms small gathering areas. The paths acts as an axis cutting through the city blocks, the small meeting places is reflected in the satellite campus. The Curved roof system frames the entrance of the building drawing in the circulation pulling from the sidewalk. The curved arch penetrates through the structure creating an axis through the lobby and main areas of the program.

CCTV MEDIA CENTER DESIGN STUDIO CENTRAL SQ., CAMBRIDGE, MA
To generate ideas for the design of media center we investigated the relationship of the built environment and the digital environment. To discover this connection I pulled apart a number of old cell phones to look at the parts inside that make the devices work. I was intrigued by the parts that make up technology because the built environment works the same. The built environment has many layers of parts that support the building. To reveal the components of the building I allowed the structure, wires, and guts that power the CCTV Media Center to be exposed and open. Within the site context, I noticed the most pleasant places to experience were the spaces in-between. These spaces are created by the layers and overlapping buildings that make up the square. The pockets can act as overhangs, planters, seating, green space, lighting, and other space treatments. To develop my concept I developed a series of interlocking geometric forms investigated through sketches, models, and diagrams. Being a community media center, the building will welcome the public and also provide the tools necessary to deliver a professional broadcast.
