Founded by Daryl and Tara Hewitt in 1994, DJ Hewitt Builders are behind countless award-winning homes in Christchurch. This five-bedroom Scarborough property, with breathtaking ocean views, is no exception.
While structurally sound, the original 1990s build lacked the aesthetic appeal desired by homeowners Dennise and Tom. Having previously collaborated with DJ Hewitt, Dennise and Tom were more than willing to place their trust in the company’s expertise once again.
DJ Hewitt specialises in hillside builds and renovations, so were perfectly placed to tackle the challenges presented by the property’s unique Sumner location. The renovation quickly became a passion project for both DJ Hewitt and the homeowners, transcending a simple client-contractor relationship.
What once was an old-fashioned front façade is now a modern entrance complete with stonework
columns, an angled driveway, and a levered roof. Skylights, which Dennise says were a last-minute decision, add an extra touch of light and airiness.
One of DJ Hewitt’s core strengths is their ability to strike that perfect balance between ease of experience and value for money. While unforeseen circumstances sometimes lead to a more complicated job than initially anticipated, the team at DJ Hewitt are adept at finding creative solutions.
Take the home’s exterior features as one example. Daryl says that while the job was more involved than expected, landscaping proved an exciting opportunity for DJ Hewitt to showcase their architectural design prowess. Dennise thanks Daryl and Texture Plants for how the landscaping came together.

DJ Hewitt Builders works alongside many of New Zealand’s leading architects, designers, and consultants. In this case, they crafted a stunning outdoor space that complements the refreshed modern home, working closely with Dennise and Tom, as well as a team of committed subcontractors.
Grand steps cascade down a desert oasis-inspired rock garden, leading to a small yet inviting seating area, hot tub, and other nooks to relax and absorb the seaside view. Upstairs is the dream indoor-outdoor living space with a large kitchen, pizza oven, and fireplace, perfect for entertaining guests or winding down with the ocean breeze. Outdoor lighting revitalises these zones after sunset.
Dennise commends everyone who worked alongside DJ Hewitt Builders for their attention to detail and ability to solve problems on the spot. “Their advice on small changes has made a big difference,” she says. As did Daryl and Tara, the crew offered vital “solutions outside the square.”
This expertise was especially instrumental in how the exterior spaces came together. Dennise recounts how Daryl talked her and Tom into fake grass, a choice they love today. “Daryl’s input was invaluable. He’d ask us questions like ‘Will it add value?’ and ‘Is it something you really want?’ which really put things into perspective for us.”
Another of Daryl’s suggestions was over-height doors downstairs. This practical solution instantly made the property seem more spacious and open-plan. “Lyall Park Joinery did a great job with interior structural changes,” says Dennise.
Thanks to Tara’s design eye, the home is as stylish as it is comfortable to live in. Dennise says Tara was always helpful, offering insight on colours, materials, textures, and soft furnishings. “We never had any disagreements with them.”
Natural tones and textures meet rustic, sophisticated design elements that create a casual yet mature sense of oceanside sanctuary. Curved elements juxtapose clean lines to add interest and dimension.
In the kitchen, the mission was to choose high-impact yet budget-friendly materials. White splashback tiles, black barstools against woods and creams, and exposed shelves filled with pops of character combine to achieve harmony at the heart of the home.

The main second-storey living space extends to a wide deck, overlooking the Pacific horizon. This is where the property’s location truly shines. It’s an enchanting spot to stargaze, unwind, and watch the waves roll over.
Each room offers a new design opportunity, and Dennise and Tara capitalised on this. “We had a lot of fun with wallpaper in the guest powder room and bedroom,” Dennise adds. Think green hexagonal tiles, metallic bathroom fixtures, captivating artworks, and even animal sculptures.
The talents of architectural designer David Rea, interior designer Michelle Lamb, and the landscaping design skills from Texture Group all contributed to this project and cannot go unmentioned.
Dennise says if they embarked on another building project, they’d absolutely turn to DJ Hewitt Builders. It’s unsurprising; this Scarborough home is what dreams are made of.

2024 marks 30 years of incredible builds for DJ Hewitt Builders. This renovated 1960s Mount Pleasant home is another example of DJ Hewitt’s industry prowess.
An earthquake rebuild, the objective for DJ Hewitt was to reinstate this home to its former glory. They certainly gave this home a new lease on life, pushing the envelope once more.
The property won DJ Hewitt a TIDA New Zealand Designer New Home Award, and architects Urban Function were Highly Commended at the Trends International Design Awards 2016.
Daryl Hewitt says that sub-trades and industry connections are the secret to DJ Hewitt’s success. Their network’s size and willingness to work together speak to DJ Hewitt’s diligence and compassion.
Taking this old home beyond a mother-and-father, cookie-cutter build was no mean feat. Across the home are four generous bedrooms, a fifth downstairs opening out to a private deck.
“From start to finish, DJ Hewitt ensured clear communication, maintained a tidy site, orchestrated the smooth operation of subcontractors, and had a team that felt like friends, all while delivering top-notch results,” says homeowner Lana.
“Choosing DJ Hewitt wasn’t just about hiring a builder; it was about partnering with a team dedicated to making our dream home a reality.”
With living areas upstairs to capture the view, the contemporary home’s airy layout is simple yet effective. This panoramic design mindset continues throughout the property in the form of bold uses of glass, sharp lines, and wide spaces.
The monochrome palette comes to life with metal details in light fixtures and statement furniture. Bright but still cosy, the building’s striking windows command street view attention.
This building is a decade old. Today, the garden is as grown as the homeowner’s children. Lana says that even after ten years, the building’s enduring quality has ensured the home remains in excellent condition despite raising a young family.
“Our home has adapted to our needs, becoming an integral part of our family life,” Lana says. “We are very grateful for Daryl and his team in building us a home that is a pleasure to live in.”
Daryl reflects that the clients themselves also put tremendous effort into making the most of each project, this monochrome marvel included. “Nothing that’s amazing is easy,” Daryl remarks. “And money doesn’t buy taste!”

The winning project, built by Bayshore Builders, was a lakeside home that seamlessly integrated its stunning surroundings into its architecture and interiors. The Architect was David Hill from Wilson and Hill Architects and the goal was to ‘bring the outside in’, creating a five-bedroom family home that harmonises with its environment on all levels.
The owners required the home to accommodate their immediate and extended family, including partners and grandchildren. To achieve this, the designers focused on creating a highly functional, free-flowing space between the kitchen, scullery, living and dining areas, and outdoor entertaining spaces. This thoughtful design approach ensures that the home is not just visually stunning but also comfortable and practical for the entire family.

A passion for the surrounding landscape in this sheltered bay and settlement on the Banks Peninsula inspired the building of this bespoke home.
The 177sqm build in Port Levy cantilevers over the breathtaking landscape and has two decks to capture the sun in the morning and afternoon.
The Browntown Builders team were introduced to the clients during the design process, “so we were a part of the whole process—design to build.”
With 20 years of experience, Browntown Builders, based in Christchurch, is passionate about the work they do and loves a challenge.
From high-end innovative architecture to new home builds and home renovations, there isn’t much Browntown Builders aren’t up for.
With the site an hour out of Christchurch and the build happening mid-COVID-19, there were challenges, “but the open, clear communication with the clients made the whole process very smooth.
“We did a few months where our team would stay over in Port Levy for three nights and have long days on the tools. It needed to be a well-organised job as there was no cellphone coverage, so everything had to be organised well in advance.”
The Browntown Builders team’s goal was “to build a quality home and to bring the architect and homeowner’s visions to life.”
This build has many standouts for the team, such as the custom-made bunk room and daybeds to maximise the use of the space, the interior spruce timber lining throughout the house, and the solid fireplace to gather around on cold days.
Browntown Builders are award-winning licensed building practitioners and Master Builders who pride themselves on a quality job done right the first time.

Established in 1999, Bob Burnett Architecture has a top reputation for award-winning, energy—and space-efficient designs that are super-sustainable.
This is why it is no surprise that the architecture company has been recognised and awarded for one of its recent Superhome projects, Whare Paetara—Wall House.
Bob Burnett Architecture received two 2023 ADNZ Resene awards: the Highly Commended Award for new homes up to 150m² and the regional Kaitiakitanga Award (for the ethics and practice of protecting and conserving the natural environment and its resources).
“There is a winning combination when it comes to Superhomes,” says Bob Burnett.
“It’s bringing together high-quality architecture with aesthetical flair combined with high-performance and sustainability criteria. Too often, one or the other is missing the mark or marginalised.”
Although small in stature, Whare Paetara makes up for its size in its ideas.
One of its most notable features is the home’s large stone spine wall, which divides the shared spaces from the more private areas of the house.
Acting as a backbone, it also splits the roof heights and has accommodating features, such as the mechanical heat recovery ventilation system and plenty of storage. The wall also allows for high-level windows, which provide natural cross ventilation and welcomes in the morning sunlight.
Bob says while it is nice to have their work recognised with awards, “the best reward is always a happy client who loves living in their home.”

Whether you want a vibrant garden bursting with life or a low-maintenance space for relaxation, well-planned landscaping offers a path to achieve your vision.
Taking on a landscaping project yourself can be rewarding, but for larger or more complex jobs, hiring a professional landscaper is a good investment. When researching contractors, check for certifications, insurance, and solid reviews.
Before contacting landscapers, have a clear idea of your desired outcome, budget, and timeline. A clear vision will help them understand your needs and present proposals that align with your expectations.
Gather quotes from several qualified landscapers. Ensure the estimates detail the scope of work, materials, and labour costs. Getting multiple estimates allows you to compare pricing and services, ensuring you get the best value for your investment.
Discuss your project thoroughly with each landscaper. Ask about their experience with similar projects, design ideas, and approaches to problem-solving. The landscaper you choose should be someone you feel comfortable communicating with and confident in their ability to execute your vision.

A city block-scaled medium-density residential development for sale through Fletcher Living, these Worcester Terraces stand proudly in post-quake central Christchurch.
“It was a great honour to have Worcester Terraces recognised with a National New Zealand multi-unit housing award in the Te Kahui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects awards in 2023,” says Jasper van der Lingen, director at Sheppard & Rout Architects. It was one of only two multiunit developments recognised with this prestigious award in the country.”
Built to excellent quality but not at an excessive price point, all units achieved Homestar 6, and many are Lifemark accredited. Diverse in approach, with one-, two- and three-bedroom terrace houses and corner apartment blocks, the city block caters for a wide variety of inhabitants.
The development is harmonised with the surrounding urban fabric, lushly landscaped with richly vegetated walkways and a larger central courtyard. The mix of two and three storey
buildings skilfully balances the lower east with the taller central city on the west, seamlessly merging the block into the cityscape.
Sheppard & Rout’s work pertains to a deep consideration of place – context, environment, the ineffable particular atmosphere that places have, the history and stories, both fiction and nonfiction, of the region, the temporal dimension – the past and future or even some small cue taken from the area.
This consideration can become the key that lifts a building from being merely a utilitarian meeting of a functional requirement to something more.

Nestled in the serene and unspoiled landscape of the Waitaki District, the Lake Ohau bach is a sanctuary amidst the area’s rugged natural beauty. Situated in a secluded village, the property is surrounded by mountains and water, and on clear days, it showcases views of the Southern Alps, including Mount Cook.
This retreat, spanning 149 square meters, pays tribute to eco-friendly design. It seamlessly blends into its dramatic surroundings through the use of various natural materials. Larch wood, gaboon plywood, and volcanic stone contribute to the aesthetic and ensure the structure harmonises with the wild backdrop.
The strategic minimalist design, including carefully placed windows, acts like live paintings, showcasing the diverse vistas that encircle the property, making it ideal for those seeking solitude.
The careful layout and window design frame stunning views, including a unique skylight in the shower for stargazing. The interior features detailed timberwork and kwila screens on the exterior, enhancing the visual experience throughout the property and echoing the alpine ambience.
Despite its modest footprint, the home is surprisingly spacious. It accommodates four bedrooms and an extra bunk room, allowing up to 12 guests to enjoy this magical spot. Archco Architecture‘s creation is far from ordinary, embodying a Kiwiana spirit with a connection to the alpine landscape.

Designed as a collaboration between Mitchell Coll and the client, a Hong Kong-based architect, this boutique Punakaiki cabin is the first of a series of built-to-rent buildings. It won Fabric the Supreme Architectural Designers NZ award in 2022 and a local NZIA Canterbury award in 2023.
Set in the West Coast bush, the aesthetic concept reinterprets the historic gold miners’ hut with modern facilities to warmly welcome modern-day travellers with a uniquely New Zealand experience.
The bush was kept as close to the cabin as possible to filter light and allow as many of its natural colours and shadows to be cast on the cabin’s interior walls as possible. Minimalist detailing brings the West Coast bush further inside.
Window and skylight placement was critical to ensure guests captured glimpses of key views such as the cliff behind, overhanging trees above, the night sky and bush in all directions. The entire surrounding landscape and individual trees were 3D-modelled to ensure this.
Mitchell says smaller homes are gaining popularity as they require less everyday and ongoing maintenance, and can represent a more realistic project aim for many people. With construction costs rising, this prompts us to reflect on what’s essential when planning a project.
Mitchell and Fabric design buildings that creatively solve the client’s brief while comfortably integrating into the environmental and historical context of the surroundings. They focus on the process as much as the outcome, providing for an enjoyable journey.

Located on a sloped site in the Hillsborough Valley, bordering Mt Vernon Park, sits this uniquely configured weatherboard marvel that makes the most of its lush location.
The property’s design reflects the angles of the Port Hills, with large windows and terraces that capture distant views of native forests. Its colour palette echoes nature as well: timber in amber tones of grasses and earthy charcoal trims.
Varied stone patterns and textures create an intentionally organic finish. Volcanic stone fireplaces in tones mimic rocky cliffsides and play a pivotal role in the home’s design, forming the focal point of the lounge, library, and outdoor living areas, seamlessly bringing the outside in.
Specifically crafted to showcase the client’s collection of artwork, books, and antiques, the design incorporates several custom joinery pieces, such as the stair spine.
The home embraces the expanse with statement panes yet still offers spaces to nestle and retreat. The library has an understated maturity perfect for reading and unwinding. The studio space is an artist’s dream, overlooking the flourishing reserve below.
This Hillsborough House was the 2023 NZIA Canterbury Architecture Awards Winner. It’s remarkable design integrated into its natural setting is a testament to the vision that Wilson & Hill Architects possess.

Four Cranford Street in Edgware is a uniquely modern commercial development that also preserves a piece of history.
J&L Construction, in collaboration with the Duo Group, completed this innovative project in October of last year.
Together they have completed several successful projects including their unique office building at 595A Colombo Street - a hard to miss, city centre property with iconic murals painted on either side.
Despite challenges in the supply chain, Rhys Johnstone, co-founder of J&L Construction, says, “The building process ran smoothly,” thanks to the strong team behind us, including employees, subcontractors and suppliers.
A highlight of this project is its use of recycled materials, including bricks from the NG building—the last heritage building of its type left in Christchurch before it was demolished to make way for the new stadium, Te Kaha.
J&L Construction believes that the Christchurch earthquakes are a tragic reminder of the importance of sustainable building practices while also paying homage to the city’s heritage and the buildings that we once had.
Rhys Johnstone says he and Ben Lagan met back in 2013 when they were both working as apprentices for a high-end architectural builder in Christchurch.
Rhys says, “After working together for nine years and becoming great mates, we started J&L Construction, where we went from building spec homes to an impressive portfolio of upmarket residential and commercial renovations, prestigious architectural homes, and light commercial new builds.”

Years later, J&L Construction has grown to a team of eight qualified builders, three apprentices, and an office administrator who all have the same goal: to keep delivering exceptional results.

Stepping inside this home, you’re greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The open-plan layout flawlessly integrates the kitchen, living, and dining areas, creating a spacious and social environment. Perfect for families, the home has three bedrooms, ensuring everyone has their own space and privacy. One bedroom even features a play area, keeping the little ones entertained.
“The home’s warm, organic colour palette reflects the surrounding environment, creating a sense of harmony and tranquillity.”
For movie nights or cosy evenings spent unwinding after work, there’s a dedicated media room, providing a perfect escape for entertainment. The two bedrooms, one with the convenience of an ensuite, offer added comfort and privacy.
The exterior of Mackenzie Magic is as stunning as the interior. Clad in a combination of Nu-Wall eSeries aluminium and Rockcote Integra with a Cerano finish, the home showcases
a modern and stylish look that complements the natural beauty of its surroundings. The Solar-Rib roofing adds a touch of elegance while ensuring durability against the elements.
Large windows strategically placed throughout the home blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, allowing you to feel constantly connected with the breathtaking Mackenzie Country landscape. Whether you’re relaxing in
the warmth of the sun-drenched living room or unwinding on the expansive terrace, the panoramic views of snowcapped peaks and whispering pines will leave you feeling inspired.
The home’s warm, organic colour palette reflects the surrounding environment, creating a sense of harmony and tranquillity. Here, time seems to slow down, allowing you to create lasting memories with loved ones in an uplifting setting.

Eleven years ago, James McConachie was building high-end homes for a local firm. At the start of the job, he was told that these homes they were building were being entered into House of the Year and to “go forth and create.”
Enjoying the management and pressure aspects of building, McConachie knew it was time to establish his own practice.
“A couple of years of contracting gave me time to establish a stream of my own contacts that would eventually see my company grow by several more staff.
“I didn’t advertise, I didnt have a website; jobs just seemed to pop up”
One build that ‘popped up’ for James McCoanchie Builders came in 2018. The homeowners wanted to create a forever home to grow old in.
Unfortunately, the project was put on hold due to one of the owners becoming unwell. Around a year later, the owner’s health improved, and they were able to get back on track with the build.
“The idea we could create a beautiful, healthy home that would help the owner in his recovery became a source of inspiration for the team and me, and a then distraction project for the owners.”
Working alongside South Architects (formally known as Cymon Alfrey Architects), the project was smooth and comprehensive, McConachie says.
“I can say I have never received a consent package with so much detail, right down to the utensil inserts in the kitchen joinery.”
This set the tone from there. Immense detail was taken across the build to deliver a home the owners deserved.
“Every home has a meaning, this one just had more. The visceral impact will be felt for a long time.”

Angus McKellar Builders recently completed a standout extension and landscaping project, showcasing their commitment to quality and attention to detail. This project enhanced an expansive kitchen and living area and added a large pool and a 140-square-meter deck to the outdoor space.
The project was notable for the extensive planning involved. Angus McKellar and his team worked closely with the clients to ensure every detail aligned with their vision, resulting in a seamless integration with the existing house structure.
Angus McKellar says their “intention for this project was to create a usable space for clients.”
The project scope ended up expanding significantly, especially in the landscaping, to match the substantial existing property and the new indoor spaces.
With a growing reputation for reliability and quality, Angus McKellar Builders sees a promising future. Their experienced team is ready to take on diverse projects, further enhancing their presence in the building industry within Canterbury.

In 2023, Jono Blakely Builders won a Regional Gold and Regional Category Award for this hillside gem at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards.
This build exemplifies the ingenious, practical solutions that Jono Blakely Builders bring to the table. Specialists in hill builds, their architectural prowess shines bright here.
Seamlessly unobstructed panoramic views capture the Otautahi horizon, which is further accentuated by skylights and the property’s raked ceiling.
The sleek, fresh interior inspires effortless living flow. Clever design, minimal stairs, and a thoughtful, light-maximising layout enhance this.
Following the sloping landscape, the home’s single split-level design allows for a large lawn and deck, a triple-car garage, and rear access for a trailer or boat.
Jono says 2024 is set to be another exciting year.
“We’ve got some exciting projects happening in both Christchurch and Wanaka this year, which the team is really looking forward to starting,” he says.
“As a team, we are looking forward to continuing our relationships with our incredible subcontractors in Christchurch as well as working alongside some new subcontractors and suppliers down south.”
They’re a small, tight-knit team that enjoys working closely together to deliver quality homes.
“Our priority at Jono Blakely Builders has always been quality workmanship over quantity. Our relationships with our clients are always of the utmost importance.”
