Investigate Secondary Schools

Investigate Secondary Schools – Before You Decide

People are quick to recommend high schools. Would you like to be able to confidently evaluate secondary schools based on your own child’s needs and dreams?

The North East Secondary Education Committee (NESE) identified there was little information available about the important transition to secondary school.

Most students have specific needs for their own learning. We believe that empowering students and their families to identify what is important for them to consider when investigating secondary schools produces engaged learners who actively participate in their learning journey.

NESE has written a booklet to help parents and students ask questions and investigate exactly what schools will provide for them.

Discussing your student’s needs allows schools to adapt to provide targeted learning.

We want students and their families to have the confidence to seek information and to fully engage at secondary school open nights to consider what a school can provide.

We strongly recommend visiting school open nights in both Year 7 and Year 8. Every year several schools have open nights on the same day.

If you can only visit one school it really helps to have seen the other school the year before. Being familiar with a school helps students envisage their education path. NESE recommends attending your local school. This allows students to stay connected with their communities and their established friend and social groups.

NESE is pleased to offer this booklet to families. You can read or print a copy on our website: www.nese.org.nz. Look under the documents tab.

Print the booklet to read with your family. Discuss topics with your family and friends. Print on both sides, flipping on the short edge. Fold it in half. It only uses two A4 pages.

We want every student to reach their full potential.

City First Aid Training

City First Aid Training has been operating for over 20 years, serving the local community of Christchurch and wider Canterbury Area. We teach CPR, choking and the use of an AED, as well as basic first aid skills to school students, construction workers, rest homes, voluntary bus drivers, and the hearing impaired, just to name a few.

Suppose you’re walking down the street, eating at a restaurant or walking with some friends. Someone slumps over unconscious. You suspect a heart attack – but do you know what to do?

If you don’t, that person may die before your eyes.

Are they having a heart attack? Once cardiac arrest takes place, brain damage occurs in about three minutes, and by nine minutes, it is likely to be severe and irreversible.

Being familiar with the techniques of CPR and putting them to use promptly can make a big difference in whether a heart attack victim survives.

If you don’t know how to perform CPR, maybe it’s time you learned. Part of being a contributing member of a community is taking basic steps to help keep others healthy and alive.

The good thing about CPR and First Aid Training is that there is no age limit. Our staff are professional, well trained and love their job.

We have a close-knit team that look after each other and our clients.

We would love to help you, teach you the skills and grow in confidence. We run weekly courses and can deliver group lessons at your venue.

There are all sorts of ways ordinary people can save lives. Being ready to do CPR is one of them. You see a bunch of cyclists coming down the street, a car pulls out and hits two of them. One of the cyclists is not moving and unconscious.

The second cyclist is awake and in a lot of pain.

What would you do? We can help you make these split-second decisions with confidence.
