Oak Development Trust

The Oak Development Trust is about growing people and creating community.

We are connected to Riccarton Baptist Church and have been in operation since 2010. Our aims are to meet the social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of people in the Riccarton area by providing leadership and resources to nurture, empower and build the community. The Trust focuses on families and migrants and creating community in all that it does.

We employ a community development worker who visits new people to the area with a welcome gift bag and supports them to connect into various activities available. We also have a social worker and a cultural support worker who provide

advocacy and support for the migrant population in Riccarton. Services include a variety of weekly activities with a Filipino playgroup and Mainly Music for pre-schoolers, sports in the park for primary school children, English, sewing and cooking classes for migrants, twice a month community café, nail cutting service and periodic socials for older people. We also co-ordinate a monthly community newsletter and host two community events each year – one in March designed to help students and locals meet each other at the start of the year, and one in October showcasing the many cultural groups, places and activities happening locally. The Trust is committed to supporting people to thrive and to live in a safe and connected community where that can happen.
