Keeping Christchurch Beautiful
Working to support and encourage others to join us in taking action to beautify our city
Keep Christchurch Beautiful (KCB) is a branch of the national body Keep New Zealand Beautiful, and is also an independent incorporated society and charity.
KCB has existed since the early 1980s in various guises, always focussed on reducing litter and improving the environment of our city through education, action, support of the activities of others and collaboration with other community groups and regional and local authorities. KCB achieves these goals via a number of projects, such as:
Schools Environmental Enhancement Programme (SEEP)
KCB’s flagship, this programme has run in primary/intermediate schools since 1994, with many schools participating every, or nearly every, year.
Over 40 schools take part each year, focussing on the tidiness of their grounds, the special work their caretakers do, how waste is minimised and recycled, and sometimes special one-off projects. ‘SEEP’ is greatly valued by schools and KCB alike and high standards are maintained across all schools. We always welcome new and returning schools, get in touch to see how it works.
Events
KCB runs clean ups and facilitates events initiated by others. We have a ‘library’ of equipment to lend groups comprising kits containing gloves, bags, tongs, litter pickers etc, which are very popular. The number of events run increases each year as more people realise how effective and rewarding it is to spend a couple of hours cleaning up their neighbourhood.
Volunteer support & recognition
KCB supports volunteers in the community with equipment, advice, collaboration and recognition of their efforts through annual Community Awards and School Awards. We take nominations each year.
Collaboration
KCB works with any group/individual that wants to volunteer in their community to make a positive environmental difference. We answer queries, source information, connect people together and provide equipment if we can.
