Message from the Co-ordinator

What it means to be prepared

We had a whirlwind of a year last year - a storm we did not see coming. Our thoughts may be largely occupied with the Covid pandemic that we had to suffer and the huge sacrifices that Kiwis everywhere had to make. We are all hopeful that we have escaped the worst, and now we have a new year ahead and with the experiences we have gained, we can make more informed decisions about our lifestyles and readiness. Our Neighbourhood Support (NS) office has modified our way of working to further enhance our abilities to be more effective by being prepared to work from any outside location.

Being prepared – that is the buzz word.

We would be wise to proceed with caution and care. The recent scare and changes to alert levels once again reminds us that it is not over. Let us not forget that the virus is rampant in many parts of the world. Each of us has an opportunity to revamp our home safety plans and to be prepared. Covid, earthquakes and storms all tend to give us a jolt about being prepared, and I share a few ideas on what being prepared means. Work as a family, or a group of friends. This is a friendly way of becoming prepared and showing that deep ‘Kiwi as’ resilience. Consider a situation where you are stuck at home, possibly without electricity, for 7 days.

Family Focus Rotorua was set up by people with a strong desire to reduce the level of family violence in our community. We are social workers, counsellors, early childcare educators, women’s advocates, men’s advocates, clinical supervisors, therapists, programme facilitators, financial mentors and service co-ordinators.

We strive to provide a safe, inclusive space for people to access information and get help in an environment that is designed specifically for them. We are here to make a difference for individuals and families/whanau who are experiencing family violence or who are in difficult circumstances. We offer a range of specialised services and programmes

• Advocacy and support for victims of family and sexual violence • Trauma-informed care & support • Social work support • Non-violence programmes • Counselling • Parenting programmes • Supervised contact • Building financial capability (budgeting advice) • Elder abuse response service

1. Keep at least one gas bottled filled.

You never know when it becomes a much-needed item. 2. Emergency kit: torch, radio, batteries, power packs etc. – what would you need for 7 days if stuck at home.

Check the expiry date of the items in your medical kit. 3. Food and water for yourselves and your pets – they too need your support. 4. Most importantly – keep smiling, in spite of emergencies, you are prepared. A positive attitude sure goes a long way. If you do have to leave your area / city for a few days, your getaway plan will include your emergency kit and your file of important documents. These should be ready for you to grab and go. Keep some cash as ATM machines may not be available. It just takes a bit of time to be prepared.

Good news for our street contacts and deputies

Firstly, we can all be immensely proud to have informed and prepared Street Contacts.

We thank our volunteers who selflessly spend their time and do their part – we must value and support them as best we can.

Secondly, we are holding interesting and informative workshops for our street contacts and deputies who are key to NS in the greater Rotorua district. They have a few very pleasant surprises to look forward to over the mid 2021 months as we will be sharing the new and updated system. Please support your street contacts and their deputies, as they are your guide to a healthy NS in your area. Another update is with the Privacy Act which has increased their stringent terms. NS Rotorua is responding with a more detailed joining form and other security measures. The joining form with the privacy statement is available now and can be downloaded from our website. We all have much to look forward. My message is a simple one to our resilient Kiwi’s: Be prepared!

Nga mihi
