How long have you been at Scarlett Hair Salon?

I have managed Scarlett for the last three and a half years and before that worked as a stylist in Kohimarama and Remuera. I have been cutting and styling hair for 17 years! I enjoy making a difference in people’s lives, suggesting something they may not have thought of themselves, or just giving them something they want.

What is your ethos for the Salon?

I want people to feel that Scarlett is a place where everyone is welcome. I have recently made the decision to move to Kevin Murphy products, which are all sulphate, paraben, ammonia and cruelty-free. This is something I am very passionate about, so it took me a while to choose what was the best fit for Scarlett. I am pleased that we can now offer our clients the best products available.

What do you like most about Ellerslie?

Ellerslie is a great community where everyone supports one another. My team and I enjoyed being part of the Ellerslie Spring Fairy Festival this year, by offering ‘fairy hair’. The people at the festival were amazing and I was pleased to be able to give back to the community.

Do you have any down time?

With two small children, one at school and one nearly there, my life revolves around them and my work. Both keep me very busy. Next year, though, I am looking forward to giving the Salon a freshen-up and continuing to do develop and improve what we do.

What led you to Ellerslie and The Fitness Club?

We have both spent a lot of time in and out of gyms over the years while pursuing careers in IT (Keiron) and banking (Jackie). Last year we were looking for a new business opportunity and the chance to purchase The Fitness Club arose. We wanted an independent gym that would allow us to adapt to the needs of the area, so this opportunity suited us perfectly.

Tell us a little about The Fitness Club Not everyone knows this, but we have three floors of equipment. We are currently upgrading our third level to further improve our facilities. We spend about three or four hours with each new client, as part of their membership, doing a proper consultation, programme design and induction, followed by a check-up six weeks later.

People joining our gym stay, as they progress to their goals, which leads to them being motivated to carry on.

What do you like about owning The Fitness Club in Ellerslie?

Ellerslie has a great sense of community that extends into the gym. People meet each other here and it has become a great place to socialise. It is fantastic to have that community feel.

What is your vision for The Fitness Club?

We are very ‘hands on’ as owners and are always in and about the gym.

We want people to feel like family here, and for clients to know we care about them. It is great to know members by name and to have the time just to chat between workouts.

How long have you worked at Ellerslie Supermarket?

A very long time. We’ve owned and operated this family business since 1984.

Over the years, my siblings and I had to help out the parents. Whether it was after school or after work, if we wanted mums awesome food we had to work in the store.

But due to unforeseen circumstances I have taken over the management of the store in 2013.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

Besides catching up with family and friends, I like to travel. I recent had an amazing trip to Sydney, Philippines, Malaysia and Cambodia. Next stop will be South America in 2016!

Have you had the chance to visit India?

Yes, several times. It was good to see where my parents are from in Gujarat and to experience how different that part of the world is.

What do you like about Ellerslie?

Everything! To me, Ellerslie is home and I miss it when I am away. I have known many of our customers for years, and some I have known since I was a child.

Has Ellerslie changed since you have lived here?

Ellerslie has changed lots since 1984, but it still remains welcoming. I enjoy living and working here.

Before we bought The Coffee Club, I had never really spent any time in Ellerslie. I wasn’t expecting the village atmosphere that it has. Everyone has been very helpful. Wherever possible, we are trying to employ staff that live locally as it is great having people that both live and work in the community.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love spending time with friends, at the movies or trying different cuisine.
