MEREDITH PARDUE Nova Supernova May 22 – June 21, 2014

529 W. 20th St., Ste. 6W New York, NY 10011

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is thrilled to present Nova Supernova, the gallery’s first solo exhibition with Austinbased abstract painter Meredith Pardue. Meredith Pardue’s source material is, first and foremost, the natural world that surrounds her. For this, her newest, exhibition she turned to the heavens and translated them into oil paint on canvas. The paintings that resulted are nebular and cosmic; they appear to oscillate within the confines of their picture planes. Working without a preconceived image, Pardue paints intuitively, brazenly, and deliberately. Each organic, petal-like form reveals itself to her through a complicated and yet free series of under and overpaintings. The process is both an investigation of space and color and of physical and psychological space. They attempt to encapsulate the magnitude of the universe and the feeling of humble smallness that that magnitude creates. The eye gravitates towards the center of the picture and the forms create the impression of pulling their viewers in towards them. They expertly demonstrate Sir Edmund Burke’s principle of the sublime, characterized as “astonishment. . . that state of the soul in which all its motions are suspended. . . the mind is entirely filled with its object, that it cannot entertain any other.” Meredith Pardue lives and works in Austin, TX. She received her MFA from Parsons School of Desgin in 2003. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and her work is in numerous important public and private collections, including J. Crew, New York Presbyterian Hospital, and the Savannah College of Art and Design. Pardue’s work has been published in several different sources such as Architectural Digest, New American Paintings, and Dwell.
