Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Along the Way, an exhibi7on of new work by Jose;e Urso. Jose;e Urso’s pain7ngs are driven by a sense of urgency to record a flee7ng moment. She translates the sensory experience of inhabi7ng a space through her manipula7on of the paint, ac7va7ng the surface in an energe7c, tac7le representa7on of her percep7on. All of the elements of place from every direc7on are captured in one plane, exploring its forms, light, and energy. Urso’s surroundings serve more as a jumping-off point rather than subject, the details of her ini7al inspira7on becoming more and more abstracted as the piece progresses. Urso’s primary fascina7on is the edge of where the outside meets the inside, a separa7on yet melding of the natural and man-made worlds. Her work has also become more physical and tac7le, her layers of paint building up in peaks and waves throughout the surface. Urso begins her pain7ngs with big sweeps of color, working in the direc7on of the flow of the space she is inspired by. Constantly turning her canvas as she works, Urso revels in the unknown and the gradual discovery of the piece as it reveals itself. Guided by intui7on, she con7nues to build up the surface from large, bold shapes to a cacophony of color, pa;ern, and form. The juxtaposi7on of intricate detailing with swaths of color leads the eye on a constant journey around the canvas, the sense of explora7on paralleling its crea7on. Jose;e Urso received her MFA in Pain7ng from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Urso’s work has been exhibited widely across the country, including the New York Public Library, The Drawing Center, and the Bronx Museum for the Arts. She has been awarded numerous grants and residencies, in par7cular, from the Na7onal Endowment for the Arts, Basil H. Alkazzi, and the Pollock-Krasner Founda7on as well as the Camargo Founda7on and Yaddo, The Alma B.C. Schapiro Residency in Sarasota Springs, NY and the Adolph and Esther Go;lieb Founda7on Grant. Urso lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
