Mayr Medicine and andrology

MEN'S HEALTH The Parkhotel Igls medical department has extended its range of services by offering andrology, the medical specialism that deals specifically with male health. This has proven hugely successful, thanks in part to the collaboration with Dr Germar-Michael Pinggera (LL.M., FECSM), one of the most distinguished urologists/ andrologists in the German-speaking region. Anti-ageing, erectile dysfunction and infertility are issues that are inextricably linked to male hormonal balance. Statistically, hormone deficiency affects every third man in Europe, with the male sex hormone testosterone playing a key role.

Dr Peter Gartner, Medical Director of the Parkhotel Igls, explains why andrology was added to the portfolio of medical services: 'Hormonal balance is as important for men's health as it is for women. Regrettably, this is not something that gets the public attention it deserves - and needs. Hormonal monitoring, diagnosis and treatment have become routine for women, but for men there is much scope for catching up'. Imbalances in male hormone levels can cause a variety of complaints, including diabetes, obesity, listlessness, reproductive problems and erectile dysfunction. 'It's been over a year since we began to offer services in this field, and our medical expertise covers the entire spectrum from diagnostics to therapeutic interventions', says Gartner. Clearly this has borne fruit.

Mayr Medicine and andrology

Andrology The World Health Organisation defines andrology as the science that is concerned with men's reproductive health, including all reproductive functions. At its core, andrology deals with hormonal imbalances, infertility, male contraception, and all forms of sexual dysfunction including all endocrine disorders.

BALANCED HORMONE LEVELS How can we tell whether our hormone levels are within a healthy range? And what positive steps can men with hormone deficiency take? The doctors at the Parkhotel Igls counsel that the first step should be prevention. This begins with an investigative examination and diagnosis. 'All men should have a hormone test. At the Parkhotel Igls, we do this in an entirely non-invasive way. If the diagnostic test shows up a need for action, we discuss patient's hormonal level. Nowadays, we have excellent

Welcome to the team

Welcome to the team Dr Irene Brunhuber is a GP and FX Mayr physician who joined the Parkhotel Igls medical team at the beginning of April. After studying medicine in Innsbruck and Freiburg, she completed her GP training at Innsbruck University Hospital. The Salzburg native further qualified as a clinical investigator, and has practised at the Hochzirl and Natters State Hospitals. A mother of three, she also taught at the Zams School of Nursing in Tyrol. We asked Dr Irene Brunhuber for a brief interview shortly before she took up her post at the Parkhotel Igls.

ALLERGIES AND INTOLERANCES:

TIME TO STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM!

Opinions differ about the wisdom of new allergen information rules adopted by the EU: are those with allergies helped, or are the rules just another instance of tokenism? However, it is undisputable that they fail to provide a clear distinction between the terms 'allergy' and 'food intolerance' – and this offers plenty of grist to the mill of campaigners and naysayers.

Dr Peter Gartner: ‘Feeling bloated after eating bread does

Time to strengthen your immune system!

WESTERN LIFESTYLES PROMOTE ALLERGIES Nevertheless, the allergy specialist does identify several causes of a slow but steady increase in allergies. In summary, these can best be described as our 'Western lifestyle'. Nowadays we are able to eat a colossal range of foods that contain potential allergens, regardless of the seasons, and therefore we never take a rest from allergens. We keep more pets than we did a hundred years ago, and we keep them indoors. Children's immune systems are subject to fewer challenges, they have contact with fewer other children, and thus fewer infections, and grow up in a much more hygienic environment. Trees in polluted environments produce stress proteins that facilitate their survival, but are highly allergenic. Last, but by no means least, the high rate of caesarean births seems to have brought about weaker immune systems. During a normal delivery,

babies are exposed to bacteria from their mothers that start colonising the babies' intestines, thereby strengthening their resistance to diseases and allergies.

What do the new allergen information rules mean?

This leads us back to the FX Mayr treatment tradition, which, though not a cure for allergies, can bring symptomatic relief. Today we know that more than half of our immune system is located in the intestinal mucosa, so Mayr therapies always work hand in hand with the resto-

A Q&A with Hanni Gartner Hanni Gartner is a qualified health coach at the Parkhotel Igls. Her therapeutic approach is based on the principles of the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), whose training programme aims to improve the way the human body functions in relation to playing golf.

Guests on your training programme improve the way their body functions specifically for the game of golf. But is golf a healthy sport? Yes, definitely; golf is a very healthy sport. Take cardiovascular health as an example: golf is ideal, especially for people over 50. The rotational movement golf requires must cause enormous strain? Overdoing it and not moving correctly should be avoided, whatever the sport. Given moderate levels of exertion, golf has a positive effect on cardiovascular problems, metabolic disorders and obesity. Furthermore, the right training benefits the muscles of the back, shoulder and core. What are the results of your training programme? We restore the balance between body and movement. In order to carry out a golf swing that is gentle on the musculoskeletal system, it is necessary for flexibility, strength and stability to be in harmony. Wellbeing and a person's game are negatively affected if any one of the three components is not working properly. That's what we work on, and that's how we get great results.

More scope for movement We are holding another two special Feldenkrais ® @Mayr weeks this year. The first week, from 7 to 14 June, will be taught in German by Carmen Neurauther, while the second week, from 14 to 21 June, is for our international guests and will be taught in English by Marion Schröger. Explore your physical capabilities, break old movement patterns, and enhance your wellbeing with the help of 10 Feldenkrais ® lessons. The Feldenkrais ® method is centred on a way of learning that is based on our own bodies, as we develop and repeat

The artichoke

THE ARTICHOKE'S MEDICINAL PROPERTIES The health benefits of artichokes have been well known for a very long time, and even the ancient Greeks valued it as a medicinal plant. While only the petals and the heart are used in the kitchen, the parts that we throw away, the leaves and roots, are of particular importance in naturopathy. The artichoke stimulates the appetite, aids digestion and has been shown to lower cholesterol. Eating artichokes inhibits the formation of cholesterol in the liver cells.

They contain cynarin, a bitter substance that stimulates the metabolism of the liver and gallbladder.

Wash the artichokes under cold running water.

work in small sections. Thoroughly clean the artichoke with the small knife, especially around the neck of the stalk. Swiftly rub the artichoke all over with lemon juice to preserve its colour. Use a small pointed spoon to scrape the hairy choke from the centre of the artichoke. Although the heart is considered the best part of the artichoke, the petals are equally delicious, especially with dips. The petals are plucked from the cooked artichoke, dipped in a sauce and the lower part of the petal is scraped off with the teeth. The heart is then eaten whole. Alternatively, the heart can be stuffed, gratinated, or made into a soup.
