Message from the Head One of the highlights of my role is when children come to see me having been recommended for a Headteacher’s Commendation for outstanding work, effort, achievement or kindness. We celebrate this in a special Headteacher’s Commendation assembly each half-term and I am very grateful to Mrs Walmsley for displaying the results so imaginatively and creatively in the foyer of the Junior School. The photograph of the latest display from our assembly on Friday 29th April can be seen inside this edition of the Messenger. The work, including outstanding creative writing, wonderful Kimmy Cantrell inspired masks and highly informative Tokyo tourist leaflets, was of a particularly impressive standard. Congratulations to all the Commendation winners! Peter Doyle, Head of Junior School
House Music Competition Friday 8th April saw the very first House Music Competition. Featuring 60 instrumental and vocal soloists, the pupils performed to a packed Junior School hall. All entrants represented their House incredibly well and there were some super, entertaining and musical performances. Mrs Fong was invited as a special guest to adjudicate and all the performers received really helpful feedback. The competition ended with every child singing as part of their House. Songs included Roar, Don’t Stop Believing, How Far I’ll Go and Hakuna Matata. The overall winners were Holderness. A huge thank you to Mrs Fong, all Junior staff for teaching their House songs and to Mrs Redhead for organising the event.

Shakespeare’s Apprentices
The whole of Year 5 enjoyed taking part in the production of ‘Shakespeare’s Apprentices’ in the theatre in April. The show was set in Tudor times and was about a group of children from a troupe of travelling players, left unexpectedly to entertain Lord Doyle of Hymers, with the plays of Shakespeare. Based on an idea by Ms Rosser, who directed the show, the performance was enhanced with some great singing of Tudor songs and also instrumentalists. Well done to all the pupils!
Marble Runs 4W have been busy making some marble runs for Science over the Easter break.

Flood Resistant Houses Last term in Geography, 5J focused on flooding. We had a look at how people have made their houses resistant to flooding in the UK before looking at problems faced by people living in an LEDC in regards to their housing. The children were then tasked with designing and building a flood resistant house that we would test. To design and build the house, the children were given a list which told them which materials represented real world materials. We then conducted our experiment which meant placing the house in a container before filling the container with a certain amount of water. I am delighted to say that all the houses built were flood resistant suggesting we have some fantastic engineers for the future in 5J. Mr Bloomfield

Year 5 Sports Tour
It was brilliant to get back to some semblance of “normality” and bring back our Year 5 Sports Trip to Newcastle. Many of the current Year 5s have not been properly away with school due to Covid, so it was super to have the vast majority of the year group come on this trip. The idea was to play football, rugby and netball against RGS Newcastle and Dame Allan’s. However, in a predictably cruel twist of fate, down came the snow, putting the whole trip in jeopardy. Dame Allan’s pulled out in order to increase the chances of RGS being able to host us in limited space. I must thank RGS profoundly for what they did – I was given photographic evidence of them using plastic goals as snow ploughs to clear the astro for us! When we arrived, we played football and netball against our hosts, followed by a lovely lunch and a short play. We then travelled to a nearby Laser Quest centre, which was brilliant fun (although I am fairly certain I was given faulty equipment…!) We then made the short journey to Durham where we ate at Ask Italian, before heading back to Hymers for around 9.30pm. It was a long day, but great fun! Thank you to Mrs Fillingham, Mrs Julian, Miss Annis, Mr Doyle, Mr Newton and Mr O’Hara for your company, and well done to all the children. Mr Hodsdon

MFL Joke of the Month Did you hear about the Spanishspeaking magician? The magician said, "For my next trick, I will disappear on the count of three. Uno, dos..." but then he disappeared without a 'tres'!
