We have been delighted by the way the children have settled into their new classes and this first edition of the Junior School Messenger this academic year reflects the busy and exciting learning environment that exists within the school.
Our new children, just starting out on their Hymers journey, have adapted extremely well, making the most of the opportunities on offer, including our extensive extra-curricular programme. It was wonderful to see the way our Year 5 children conducted themselves on their residential trip at PGL Caythorpe
Year 6 Leadership Club Assembly
Year 6 Leadership Club discussed ways to raise awareness amongst pupils of the important support roles within Hymers on Tuesday 8 October.
Members of the Leadership Club interviewed Mrs James, our school nurse, and Mrs Holtby, Office Administrator and
Homework Club supervisor. We asked questions about their working environment and overviews of their jobs.
All the people involved thoroughly enjoyed it and were grateful to Mrs James and Mrs Holtby for coming along.
By Emma and Nicole
Court in Lincolnshire. They approached the challenges of being away from home and of conquering fears on the activities with resilience, determination and humour.
Most pleasing, however, was seeing the principles of our CARE Code shining through during the weekend, as children supported one another fantastically well, forging new friendships and bonds whilst working together in teams. I am also very grateful to our parent body for their ongoing support for our trips programme.
Peter Doyle | Head of Junior School
The gifts will be donated to two local charities: Hull Churches Home from Hospital Service and Hull Food Bank
Harvest Festival
A huge thank you to all parents and children who contributed gifts for our Harvest Festival which was celebrated on Tuesday 15 October.
Mr Doyle interviewed some children about what life is like living on a farm before telling the children an interesting story about kindness. The Year 6 Choir performed and all the children sang The Harvest Samba.
In the Art Room...
What a fantastic start to the new school year in the Art room!
Year 3 have been getting their hands dirty and drawing with charcoal. Making dark marks, rubbing back into it to make light areas, crushing it, smudging it, making large marks – you name it, they’ve tried it and had a lot of fun with it too!
Storytelling is the theme for Year 4. They have explored the work of graphic artists and illustrators and produced some wonderfully thoughtful work in their sketchbooks.
Year 5 are loving typography and maps! Their sketchbook explorations of kinetic typography are brave and fun. Their hand drawn typography is inventive and carefully drawn. Their drawings on maps are bold and well-observed. They can’t wait to bring all their ideas together.
Turning drawings into 3D objects is the challenge for Year 6. They have successfully scaled up drawings of dogs, used collage to create texture and now have the task of making them stand up! Watch this space.
Fun in the Modern Languages Room!
There were plenty of visitors in the Modern Languages room during our Open Event. Thank you very much to all of our pupils for their help.
Celt Day
As part of their History Curriculum, Year 5 enjoyed an interactive morning exploring their Autumn term topic of the Celts.
They headed over to our Forest School area to enjoy traditional Celtic activities such as:
➔ Making (mini) hill forts
➔ ‘Cooking’ on an open fire (s’mores!)
➔ Making Celtic jewellery
➔ Listening to Celtic tales told by their ‘wise elders’ (the teachers)
➔ Wearing blue face paint
HMC Rugby
Well done to our U11A and B rugby teams who took part in the HMC Rugby festival in Leeds.
The B team performed strongly in their group while the A team improved as the tournament went on, showing some excellent rugby. Thank you to Grammar School at Leeds for hosting once again.

Scintillating Science
Junior School pupils have been learning lots and having fun in their Science lessons this term. Here are some pictures of what they have been up to…
Learn a Musical Instrument!
Would your child like to learn a musical instrument?
We can offer tuition for the following: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Trumpet, Trombone and other brass instruments, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, Guitar, Percussion and Singing.
Applications for lessons on Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Euphonium and Double Bass are particularly welcome. Occasionally there may be a short waiting list for some instruments.
The lessons are organised on a rota basis and take place during the course of the school day. The school has a large number of instruments available for hire and these are available for the payment of a small termly maintenance charge.
Please click here for more information and to sign your child up for lessons.
Year 5 PGL Residential Trip
Children in Year 5 enjoyed a fabulous weekend on their PGL residential trip.
Activities such as abseiling, giant swing, trapeze, sensory trail, archery, orienteering, zip wire and canoeing filled the days, along with a fun-filled evening campfire. Many thanks to Mr Doyle, Mrs Julian, Mrs Redhead, Miss Hammond and Mr Whitehead for giving up their weekend to make this trip happen.
The children were a credit to the school and their parents. Here’s what some of them had to say about the trip…”
“The PGL trip was amazing! The food was delicious. Abseiling was really fun although my hands got very black. My funniest moment of the whole trip was when me and Oliver kept crashing into the reeds in canoeing!”
Jasper
“The PGL trip was exhilarating, emotional and hilarious!”
Theodore
“My highlight of PGL was the King Swing which looked fun but was a little scary.
Mr Doyle was very brave because he made the top of the trapeze. We all cheered for him as he came down.”
Hannah
“I think one of the scariest things was the trapeze because the pole we had to climb on was so wobbly, but everyone either touched the platform or stood on it, and no one fell off it.
We had a campfire on the second night, singing and shouting very loudly. I would definitely recommend PGL because it’s so much fun and you face lots of your fears.
A big thanks to all the instructors who encouraged and helped us.”

On the Farm!
Class 4EG and 4W enjoyed their Science trip to Carr House Farm. They started the day by learning about the grains grown on the farm and how to mill these into flour. It was then on to learning how to use this flour to bake bread. After this they had the opportunity to pick apples to turn into apple juice and then finally went on a walk to learn about the animals and biodiversity on the farm. All the children had a brilliant day and were a credit to the school.
