Reverend John Hymers Bursary Fund

This is your opportunity to

pass it on... Reverend John Hymers Bursary Fund

Introduction The truth is we are behind our peer schools. Some of them have been fundraising for a number of years and many now have in excess of £30m to use for their bursaries.

Since its opening in 1893, Hymers College has depended on, and benefitted from, the generosity of those who shared the vision of the school’s founder, John Hymers.

For the security of the Hymers Bursary provision we have to act quickly. To tackle this we are investing. For the first time in the school’s history we have a full-time Development Officer and team. Their mission is two-fold: to catch-up with our peer schools as soon as possible and to bring the Old Hymerian community together which also includes past parents and staff. It cannot be stressed strongly enough, the urgency and importance of this initiative.

The success and strength of the college at present is the result of generations of giving, from the first benefactors to many Old Hymerians and friends of Hymers.

Bursaries are key to Hymers College. It is part of our deeprooted culture that we bring together the most gifted students we can: to give them the very best chances in life, particularly for those that cannot afford the fees. Academic achievement, yes, but much more than that. Good learning with a social conscience can be achieved when a healthy social mix is apparent. This represents a breadth of talent, backgrounds and character. We hope that you’ll be able to join us on this ambitious programme. The contribution of philanthropy is vital to helping even more students benefit from a Hymers education.

We believe that social diversity is a strength and reflects our founding mission so I’m delighted to support this vital initiative. It’s essential that we have a long term and sustainable fund for bursary places to ensure that the School continues to thrive for the next century and beyond. Currently our self-funded Bursary programme has championed social mobility for bright children of Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire regardless of background for many years.

I hope you feel able to support the Bursary campaign with either a gift in your lifetime or through a legacy pledge. For any gifts you may feel able to make, we will be extremely grateful.

This year we had, with regret, to say ‘no’ to 25 talented students for a place at Hymers and our 15 year vision is never to turn away a gifted child. This ambitious programme seeks to make that goal financially sustainable and, over time, to double the number of places on offer.

About

John Hymers and his mission Hymers College was established under the will of Reverend John Hymers as a school “for the training of intelligence in whatever social rank of life it may be found”. Since opening in 1893 we have endeavoured to remain true to our founder’s wishes, something that has benefitted all our pupils. Hymers College is not just a school for wealthy families who can afford the fees of a private school. We must be able to continue to carry out the will of our founder and reach out to the brightest in our community and help them with a place at the school. This in turn will secure the school’s position full of the most able children which will help us to drive up standards, develop talent and nurture wellrounded citizens ready for the world. We are ambitiously aiming to create a bursary fund large enough to double the number of places

we currently offer, to provide financial assistance so no child is denied the education they deserve. However, in order to achieve this we need support from the whole of the Hymers community. We do not want Hymers to be a school for the privileged - we are proud of our diverse community and we endeavour to be able to continue with this. We already have some income coming into the John Hymers Bursary Fund with the help of regular giving and generous legacy donations from Old Hymerians and others, but we need to significantly amplify this.

Bursaries are vital; they impact and enhance pupils’ lives Developing a sustainable bursary income will: • Underwrite our commitment to the founding principles of the School, ensuring that no eligible pupil loses the opportunity of an education at Hymers. • Ensure that Hymers remains a vibrant educational environment, reflecting diversity and promoting inclusion.

The power of a Bursary and what it means to a young life • Significantly enhance opportunities • The development of talent that may not otherwise see the light of day • Support through schooling and sometimes through university too

The Proposal Within a decade, we aim to raise £10 million and more. Some of this fund will be used to fund places in the short term; the rest will be used to grow and secure our future bursaries. Our ambitious aim is to have at least 25% of the pupil body funded through bursaries.

Our Aims 12% of our student body are currently receiving some form of financial assistance at a cost of £1.2 million to the School (funded by current parents)

✓ Our 15 year goal is to double this provision;

✓ In 15 years we want to hold a fund of £10m and more;

✓ Not to turn away a single gifted child that would benefit from a Hymers education.

The power of a

Bursary Place and what it means to past students ...why I’m supporting by regularly giving...

A Hymers bursary in the 1990s helped me stay at the institution during a difficult time in my family’s life something 2020 has taught us can happen to anyone. This continuity helped me succeed in my studies and go on to a career in education myself. If my time teaching in Hull, Beijing, Shanghai, Bangkok and Frankfurt has taught me anything - it is that talent is widely distributed but opportunity is not. Bryne Stothard OH 1989-1999

HYMERS COLLEGE

I was lucky enough to get a bursary position at Hymers many years ago now. My time at the school really set me up for a great future and really taught me how to push myself and perform to the best of my ability. From sports and music all the way through to academic studies, I wouldn’t have been able to receive such a fantastic education at any other school in Hull. Sam Copsey OH 2008-2012

Why I’m supporting by regularly giving...

Having spent three years in the Junior School at Hymers, the time came for me to sit the Eleven Plus as the secondary school selection exam was known in the 1960s. Not only did I pass this but was also awarded both a local authority scholarship and a Hymers College Governors’ Scholarship, the precursor to the modern Bursary scheme. As a result of this, I enjoyed seven years at Hymers, including two years in the Sixth Form, leading to some degree of success in my A Level exams. Rather than going to university, I decided to go straight into full-time employment and joined Midland Bank in Hull. I spent the rest of my working life in Finance, moving on from banking to school finance in the mid-1990s. Graeme Middleyard OH 1954-1964

Receiving a Bursary to attend Hymers from Junior School through to Sixth Form is something for which I am incredibly grateful. Coming from a proudly working-class household and being immersed in a private school environment for the majority of my childhood was admittedly multifaceted. However, Hymers provided me with opportunities that would have been significantly harder to access otherwise and with friends that I am still close to. I became the first person in my family to attend university, achieving a first class law degree. Having worked at a top, global law firm, I am currently studying for a master’s degree: a path I don’t think my life would have taken without the doors that Hymers opened to me. Charlotte Oliver OH 2006 - 2016

Growing up on an inner-city council estate does not give you many prospects. From a single parent family with benefits as our only source of income, it is hard to switch your focus from carefully planning the household meals to future academic and professional plans for the kids.

...Bursaries are a key mechanism for Hymers College to realise this mission....

The assistance offered meant I was able to attend Hymers and gain an educational advantage that has lasted. Over and above the levels of teaching Hymers offered, the environment of being around other pupils with an equally inquisitive nature was a vast difference to what I was used to. My career path in drama has opened up so many opportunities that I wouldn’t have had, without a Hymers Bursary. Hymers unlocked and discovered leadership skills in me that I would not have found had it not been for my life at Hymers. I was Head Boy in 2018 which gave me public speaking roles and also allowed me to stand out and be myself. I never had to prove anything to anybody. I just had to work hard and I felt totally inspired by those around me. Tashinga Bepete OH 2008-2018

How you can help on this mission by becoming an

active supporter

This is your opportunity to pass it on. You could give the next gifted scientist, surgeon, mathematician, teacher, nurse or engineer a Hymers education. Our vision can only become a reality with the generous support from the whole Hymers community: Old Hymerians, parents, staff and the many others who believe in the difference that an education at Hymers can make to young people, regardless of their financial circumstances. Each donor who makes a gift to the Bursary Fund makes a difference.

Becoming a regular donor Whatever the amount you can afford will go to the Fund to help gifted children secure a place at Hymers College. We already have 20 donors but we aim to increase this to over 250 donors in a five year period and many more beyond. As a regular donor you’ll be kept informed as to the success of the Fund and to the outcomes that your generous gift is supporting. Remember: donating to charity is tax-free and we’ll be able to claim the Gift Aid on your gift enhancing it by about 20% if you are a UK taxpayer. If you wish to talk with us about doing something a little different, we would be delighted to speak with you.

Example ... for every 40 or so generous donors who give £20 per month (plus Gift Aid), one talented young person can join the Hymers family. This could give a young person who does not have the financial means the chance of a Hymers education, please give more if you can.

Make a Legacy promise Add the Reverend John Hymers Bursary Fund as a beneficiary to your will This is easy to do: we can send you a form that you can send to solicitors and it’s done - as simple as that. We don’t expect to be able to receive this any time soon, but knowing it’s pledged to us gives us great confidence that we are supported. You can choose to donate a specific sum, a share of your estate, or other assets such as stocks and shares. Making a bequest to charity, like Hymers, can also lessen the burden of inheritance tax on your executors.

Supporting Hymers with a gift or donation in your will is a highly personal way of giving that has a lasting impact on future generations. Your donation will change young people’s lives.
