Much of this issue is dedicated to opportunities to develop employability skills and explore career and university options via virtual events, virtual work placements and the excellent NCS run by Mr K Walmsley and Mr Geary at Hymers. I have attempted to collate the variety of opportunities available, but this is by no means a comprehensive list. As the national lock down eases, more opportunities may become available. Mr P Meadway • Head of HE & Careers

NCS at Hymers College “The NCS provides an outstanding opportunity to develop employability skills and to meet employers - an great boost to CVs, interviews and applications for University and Post A level Apprenticeships.” - Mr P Meadway, Head of HE & Careers
NCS during Covid It has been a difficult year for us all since the pandemic. Just over a year ago, Hymers NCS was recruiting the last few participants for a record-breaking 270 young people to attend the 3 week residential programme. Within a month it was into the unknown territory of lockdowns and virtual life. With an increase in difficulties within our local community, NCS became an even more important aspect for young people and our community. So we decided to make a change, and with the support of 24 fantastic Hymers, Wolfreton, Kelvin Hall, Marvell College, Archbishop Sentamu and Winifred Holtby students, we managed to deliver a programme focusing on mental health and first aid, supporting the Homeless and NHS with some great projects. Here is Gina to discuss their programme...

The return of young people back into schools allowed the Hymers NCS team to set about continuing the fantastic work young people can achieve when the opportunities arise. A more relaxed ruling resulted in 36 Hymers students going on a two-week Autumn programme which involved paintballing, rifle shooting, fire fighter training, escape rooms and much more. The groups set about a really important issue of loneliness and poverty in our community. One group managed to raise an astonishing £1300 which they spent on nearly 100 presents for homeless families to have something to open on Christmas. More about the Autumn project is available via the link.
NCS is also a fantastic way to boost your skills and complete some face to face work experience which may be difficult to find. The 30 hours of social action will contribute to D of E and can be logged on platforms such as Hymers Grofar accounts (https://auth.grofar. com/). The programme helps explore working in a team and project planning, crucial skills needed in every job.
So what does NCS 2021 look like? With the fantastic work of our NHS, the light at the end of the tunnel looks closer and we are on track with the Government roadmap and excited to announce a more familiar NCS Summer programme. This year, the NCS team have decided to go all out with two programmes; one 3 week with a residential phase, and one 2 week home based programme. Each include activities such as, paintballing, escape rooms, rifle shooting, battleground archery, fire fighter training, Enterprise workshop from Apprentice finalist Adam Corbally plus much, much more. NCS links up with many charities, organisations and community representatives to give young people the opportunity to expand their experiences and boost their CV.
The programme is recognised by universities and employers as a fantastic way to get ready for the next step. At Hymers, we have linked up with over 20 local charities and organisations which can help open doors to opportunities and work experience.
It doesn’t just stop after the 3 weeks, we continue give our young people the voice and opportunities to really impact on our community with the Local Action Group. This year, the LAG is working with Hull’s Local Cultural Education Partnership to help give a voice to the younger generation on how to engage and make Hull an even greater place to live. Here is a creative piece from a local action group member which was shown to various CEO’s of organisations such as Absolutely Cultured and Freedom Festival about the thoughts and feelings of young people during the lockdowns...
