Careers Convention 2023
A regular feature in these Careers Newsletters, https://medicmentor. co.uk/ offers an excellent portal for those interested in careers in Medicine, with both free and cost effective options for virtual work experience, advice and information. Those who are interested in wider healthcare careers, including nursing, physiotherapy and speech therapy, might like to check out their partner website https:// alliedhealthmentor.org/
Medic Mentor ICAEW
If you are more interested in accounting & finance as career options, particularly those of you in the Sixth Form who are considering whether or not to go to university, the ICAEW website is worth investigating. It includes information and opportunities about the current availability of work experience, internships and apprenticeships. You can easily narrow the search to your part of the country. A firm that regularly advertises opportunities on this site is Hull-based accountants, Smailes Goldie, who attended our Careers Convention recently. https://train.icaew.com/
The annual Careers Convention took place on the evening of 7 March, just before the snow arrived, and was attended by a good number of our Year 11 students, along with a proportion of our sixth-formers.
Many regular exhibitors were in attendance, alongside others who were attending for the first time.
A good range of careers were represented by the exhibitors, from marine engineering to social work. There was lots of positive feedback and a seminar on dentistry was particularly well received. Planning for 2024’s convention has already begun.
Looking for paid work?
You might want to take a look at www.savethestudent.org/student-jobs/top10-student-jobs.html for more advice and ideas. There’s lots more useful info elsewhere on the www.savethestudent.org/ website.

University offers are coming in and, for many, decisions are being made about firm and insurance choices. We always recommend you speak with your UCAS adviser, form tutor and/or sixth-form pastoral team before making your final choice. In most cases, you will have until 8 June to make your choices. Do check details of offers carefully, to see if you have to provide supporting evidence of qualifications or have supplementary documents to complete - possibly well ahead of 8 June
It is always worth looking out for possible scholarships, grants or bursaries that can provide financial support for your studies. www.thescholarshiphub.org.uk/ is a good starting point for this.
Those of you looking for apprenticeships still have time to find and apply for places. Local accountancy firms are always looking for apprentices and HETA often have engineering opportunities available. www. thescholarshiphub.org.uk/ is, again, a good place to find degree apprenticeship opportunities.

Volunteering with Age UK
I may have previously mentioned that Age UK are looking for volunteers. You need to be aged 18 for this, so it’s only relevant for Year 13 students. It’s obviously useful for those interested in healthcare careers, but there are also opportunities in IT and events.
If you are interested and would like more information, talk to Mr McTeare or visit www.ageuk.org.uk/hull
Yipiyap
If you’re looking for a source of income, you might want to take a look at www.yipiyap.co.uk/become-a-yipiyap, particularly if you end up taking a gap year (planned or otherwise).
The scheme allows you to tutor other students in your favourite subjects.
Year 12 Information
The university application process will begin in earnest after Easter. We are hoping to arrange a UCAS information evening for students and parents on 4 May. Confirmation of this date and details of the evening will be advertised in due course. Throughout the summer term, guidance will be offered to Year 12 students to help them in the process of investigating possible universities, degree courses and alternative options post-A Level.
You may have heard about changes to UCAS references and personal statements; the changes to personal statements will only take effect from 2025 entry, so will not affect you (unless you apply/reapply next year). References will be changing this year, but these are written by your teachers and the UCAS staff team, so will not directly affect you.
Hopefully, you will have some work experience to look forward to (and some have already done some). Those of you still looking for work experience, it is worth talking to Mr McTeare or the Development Team here at Hymers. Work experience can be useful in working out which careers (and possibly which degrees) you may want, or not want, to consider. For careers in healthcare and veterinary studies, valid work experience may be essential. Try some of the links elsewhere in this newsletter for virtual work experience. We also have thousands of OH links that we can put you in touch with!
The UCAS information evening, on 4 May, is primarily aimed at Year 12 students, who will begin their applications next term. However, there may be some value in Year 11 students attending, particular those who expect to be early entry applicants (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary & Oxbridge). Further information will be provided in due course.
Year 10 & below
If you are looking for careers advice, contact Mr McTeare in the first instance. Look out for talks or careers events at Hymers that are open to younger year groups. If there is such an event that you feel would be of value to you, but is not advertised as open to Years 10 and below, speak to your form tutor or to me directly, as we may be able to accommodate you.
InvestIn, advertised elsewhere in this newsletter, offers opportunities for those aged 12 and above. If you are interested in a paid-for experience but receive a bursary to attend Hymers, you may be entitled to a free place. Talk to Mr McTeare if this is the case.
