...................... A message from Mr Copeland .................... It has been a busy and exciting first half term in school and I have been delighted to get to know all of the pupils through their PE lessons, assemblies and my regular visits to their classrooms. The school is always full of energy and excitement and I am proud of everything the pupils and staff have achieved. Throughout the first half term we have started to underpin the values and importance of the CARE Code in our school environment. This has also been the theme of the assembly programme in which children’s stories have been linked to the CARE Code. Examples of these books are: PeeWee the Lonely Kiwi, a book about care, kindness and friendship; Blue and Bertie, a book about acceptance and how it’s good to be different, The Slightly Annoying Elephant, a book about a visitor who lacked respect for people and property and How to Catch a Star, a book about effort and

resilience. In our final assembly of the half term, I was delighted to hand out CARE Code Certificates to pupils who are always displaying these important values in school. Throughout the first half term we have continued to develop the links between Hymers Hessle Mount and Hymers College which is benefiting pupils on both sites. Our Reception pupils enjoyed a visit from the Year 12 Design and Technology students who came to observe how the children play in an educational setting and they discussed the toys they liked in school. The Sixth Form students will now go away to design and create educational toys based on their research. They will then bring them back for the Reception pupils to play with.

Mrs Fong (Director of Music) is coming over to Hymers Hessle Mount every Tuesday for class music lessons with Reception and Year 1 and is also providing a Singing Club for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils after school. The Year 2 pupils are enjoying their weekly trips down to Hymers for swimming, Junior School playtime and music lessons. We will continue to build upon these links in order to provide key learning opportunities across both schools alongside creating a seamless transition between the sites.

Finally, I would like to thank you for the kind donations that were sent to Hull Churches Home from Hospital Service following our Harvest Festival. I received a letter from the charity thanking the school community for their support and explaining that the donations were already making their way to families in need.

............................... PRE-SCHOOL ............................. We have enjoyed a wonderful first half term in the Pre-School! The new children who joined us in September have settled in beautifully and we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. Our focus this term has been ourselves! We have drawn self-portraits, talked about our families, our likes and dislikes and the things we enjoy doing both at home and at school. We have read stories about families, including ‘Peace at Last’ and ‘Just One of those Days’ by Jill Murphy. Everyone loved reading ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ for Roald Dahl Day. The children have enjoyed exploring the indoor and outdoor learning environments, role playing in the home corner, getting arty in the creative area and singing and dancing on our new stage outside!

We have also visited the Woodland Area regularly, making dens, looking for signs of autumn and spotting creepy crawlies. Our next topic will be ‘Bedtime Stories’. We will be talking about the

differences between night and day, discussing our own favourite stories and celebrating Diwali, Bonfire Night and of course, Christmas!

................................ RECEPTION .............................. All of the children have settled into Reception really well and the teachers have enjoyed getting to know their pupils. This half term we have been very busy learning all about the human body and talking about our emotions. As part of this topic we enjoyed listening

to the Funnybones story and even made our very own skeleton pictures. Thank you so much for sending in the baby photographs. The children really enjoyed sharing them with their friends and trying to guess who they belong to. During our Hymers Hessle Mount Fair morning the children had a lot of

fun when taking part in games and activities including Hook-a-Duck and Whack-a-Mole. We have also enjoyed celebrating Halloween by decorating pumpkins and making a spooky potion. There is a lot to look forward to next half term too including our Autumn and Christmas topics. We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our Christmas production on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 December at 2pm, (details to follow).

................................... YEAR 1 ................................. Since being back in school, we have been so busy! In our English lessons, we have looked at labels and captions. The children had great fun covering their classmates with post-it notes. Following this, we enjoyed the story ‘Room on the Broom’, the children completed sequencing and ordering activities linked to the story. Our science lessons have been based on looking at animals including humans. We have learnt how to categorise animals and have researched what different animals eat. The children have also looked at the five senses and how they help us each day. In Geography, the children have enjoyed researching where they live and how far they live from Hymers Hessle Mount School. We even completed a graph to show how we

all travel to school. They also had fun constructing aerial views of the classroom using different items from around the room. The children tried hard to learn their address, but we found the postcodes quite tricky! Our maths lessons have been full of practical problem solving linked to place value, addition and subtraction. The children have tackled these challenges like detectives, looking at every possible clue to help them solve the answers. Our art lessons have taken us back to nature. We have had fun looking at sculpture and even building our own natural hanging mobile. We are very much looking forward to creating new memories with your children next half term.

.................................. YEAR 2 ................................ We have happily settled into Year 2 life and are thrilled with how enthusiastic the children are! During the past seven weeks we have linked many of our subjects to our English focus, The Lighthouse Keeper stories. We have sequenced the stories, written diary recounts, newspaper reports and much more. We even created our own lighthouses, using our art skills by mixing colours to paint the background and our DT skills to incorporate a pulley system to lift Hamish to the lighthouse lamp! In science we have looked at animals including humans and thinking about how we change as we grow and

how our bodies react to exercise. In geography we have been studying aerial views and in history will have looked at the life of Grace Darling, who lived in a lighthouse herself. The children say their highlights this term were the following - our team building session outside, making simple pulley systems with ropes and pulleys as well as their weekly visits to Hymers College for swimming and music. We are all very excited for what is ahead of us for next half term...
