As the Summer Term draws to a close I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the wonderful experiences and accomplishments that we have shared at Hymers Hessle Mount. It has been a year filled with learning, growth and countless moments of joy and laughter. The children have achieved so much and it has been a pleasure to watch their confidence flourish and to see them develop new skills.

cherish special memories of them both. The final few weeks of term have seen a number of exciting events take place. I was delighted to see all the children participating for their houses on Sports Day and a big well done to the parents and guardians who also stepped up; we may need a longer warm up before the races next year! The Year 2 performance of Pirates vs Mermaids wowed audiences with strong singing, fluent lines, good humour and confidence
Roy Turnham (Paralympic Footballer) delivered an inspiring assembly about growing up blind and achieving his goals. The children enjoyed the experience and asked some excellent questions. Roy has even agreed to come back in the Autumn Term to teach us how to play blind football! A big thank you must also go to everyone who generously agreed to sponsor one or several of our pupils. As a result we will be able to considerably invest in
I would like to extend a huge thank you to the dedicated staff team for their unwavering commitment to nurturing and educating our young pupils. They seek to know and understand each child as an individual enabling and guiding them on their educational journey. Their passion and enthusiasm creates an environment where every child feels valued and supported. I would also like to say a fond farewell to Mrs Doggett and Mrs Hill who are moving on at the end of this academic year. They have both given so much to the school over the last ten years and I know that children and staff alike, will
throughout. I was privileged to present the graduation certificates to the pupils who have come to the end of their time in the Pre-School and was amazed with their singing and music performance. We were also fortunate to welcome not one but two Paralympic athletes into school for an afternoon of exercise and activity. Sean Gaffney (Paralympic Power Lifter) put the children through their paces with a high intensity fitness circuit and
new sports equipment for the school. Finally, I would like to wish our fabulous Year 2 children well as they embark on the next stage of their education. Enjoy continuing your Hymers journey in the Junior School!
I hope you all have a wonderful summer break filled with rest and quality time with family and friends. I look forward to welcoming you all back in the new school year.
This half term we have been exploring the seasons and have been looking for signs of summer in our gardens.
We talked about what we like to do in the summertime and discussed our favourite holiday destinations and how we might travel there. As part of this topic the children made their own passports and airline tickets and even enjoyed a flight on our Pre-School aeroplane. We were very pleased to see them all passing through all the checks safely and receiving a stamp in their passports!
The children have also been talking about trips to the seaside and have been learning about the plants that grow by the coast and different animals that live by and in the sea. They have made lots of different sea creatures using paints and glitter, and enjoyed learning songs about mermaids and pirates.
With the hotter weather hopefully by now upon us we have also been finding out about keeping safe in the sun and
PRE-SCHOOL
We have had another wonderful half term in Reception! Our recent theme has been under the sea and we have had a fantastic time learning about summer, different sea creatures, finding pirates and searching for lost treasure.
how to keep our bodies healthy. We discussed the importance of staying hydrated, why we need sun cream and found out about different ways to keep ourselves cool. The children have been very busy in their Phonics lessons and we have been practising reading and writing our names.
Everyone has worked very hard this half term and continued their learning with real enthusiasm. It has been a delight to see them grow into confident, independent and caring young pupils. It was particularly great to see the children having so much fun on Sports Day, cheering on their friends and never giving up, they all did an amazing job.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish the children and their families a lovely summer and we look forward to seeing you all again after the summer break!

maps and spent a lovely afternoon drawing our school field, labelling the Woodland Area, steps and fences. It was an amazing day when pirates and parrots visited us in our role-play areas to help us learn how to make hats and count coins. We took a deep dive under
We learnt about the different kinds of summer holidays we go on and used the globe to find some of these places. It was lovely to read about Africa and to send a postcard back to school. We wrote a message about how hot it was, how we loved to splash in the sea and make sandcastles. We explored
find out more about how they live and train with their disabilities. Our spoken language has also been enhanced with the introduction of Bonjour, je m’appelle, singing heads, shoulders, knees and toes in French and learning to count from un to dix!
the sea to discover jellyfish, seahorses and turtles. It was fun to make some of these creatures using paper plates, hole punches and wiggly pipe cleaners. As a final flourish, we enjoyed learning about France, especially the capital Paris. We were lucky to take part in sporting activities with Paralympic athletes and
It has been an amazing Summer Term and we even got to spend one day in our new classes so that we know a little more about how Year 1 learning will be. Now it is time for a well-earned break to spend time away from school with our families and friends for a long rest and fun-filled summer holiday.
What a fabulous way to finish a wonderful year, with the children meeting not one, but two inspirational sportsmen, who encouraged them to complete their sponsored keep-fit sessions.
This was a good way to put into practice our knowledge of seconds, minutes and hours, which we had covered in our Maths unit on time. On the same day the children learnt about what Paris has to offer tourists visiting the 2024 Paris Olympics and then they jumped back nearly 3000 years to find out where the Olympic Games began. To encourage the children to be money savvy, we have been asking them to make totals using a variety of coins and hope you will allow them to play shops at home, with real money, and maybe they could even pay for the odd ice cream using coins!
The children really loved all the books we have read in the past year. This half term the two main texts we enjoyed in class were Zog and Stickman Princess Pearl lived with Zog and we believed she would have encouraged the dragons to eat healthily! So when we decided to have a go (following the introduction of cutting and knife safety skills) the children made a delicious fruit salad during Healthy Eating Week in June. We were impressed with the many different ingredients they included in their yummy dishes. We then read about Stickman and used this book
as a base for writing a set of instructions for the famous childhood game of Pooh Sticks! Those that hadn’t played the game before were keen to try it so look out for a bridge with a flowing stream and start hunting for pooh sticks!
For many in Year 1, weaving was a newly learnt skill which neatly
finished the Spring to Summer Science topic as we made colourful rainbows on No Pens Day. We were starting to think that the sun had forgotten to make an appearance, but thankfully the signs that summer was on its way were spotted by our keen scientists who have kept climate diaries and learnt important ways to stay safe in the sunshine.
We want to congratulate all the children on their hard work in Year 1 and as we say au revoir to a fantastic year, we would like to wish you all a very happy holiday time. We certainly look forward to hearing about your summery adventures in September!
Wow…we have had an amazing half term in Year 2, to round off what has been a wonderful year of learning and fun. We started off with our Year 2 production of Pirates vs Mermaids.
We are so proud of how well the children performed; they remembered their lines, their cues and stage directions, and sang their hearts out to large audiences.
It was lovely to see so many families and friends there to support the children - we hope you were all as impressed as we were!
The boys and girls have loved our History topic on the Great Fire of London, looking at historical sources to research facts about the events of the fire and what happened in the
aftermath. Perhaps the most memorable activity of all was our recreation of the Great Fire, where we made model Tudor buildings which we set alight on the school field. This demonstrated perfectly how the fire started and spread so quickly and allowed the children to imagine what it might have been like to be there in 1666.
On our Paris Olympics-themed day, we learnt all about the history of the Games, had the opportunity to try some French cuisine and then met two inspiring Paralympians who told us about their experiences and determination on their paths to reaching their goals.
Finally, we asked the children to reflect on the year and think about all of the things we have done and which they enjoyed the most. It proved difficult to choose a favourite as they remembered dressing up for World Book Day, the Swimming Gala, the inter-house Pancake Day Race, our trip to Eureka!
the visit from the beautiful birds of prey and our visit to the Hymers College campus to watch We Will Rock You, to name but a few.
Although we are sorry to say goodbye to the children as they move on to the next stage of their journey, we have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them and we know they will continue to flourish and grow. Well done Year 2 on a fantastic, enjoyable year. Have a wonderful summer!
