Hymers Hessle Mount
Our Vision In the immediate future: • Appoint Interim Head to oversee smooth, successful transition to Hymers Hessle Mount from September 2022 Mr Doyle (Head of Hymers Junior School), Ms Cutting (Current Principal of Hessle Mount School) and Mr Stanley (Head of Hymers College).
Welcome from Justin Stanley Head of Hymers College I am delighted that you and your family are considering Hessle Mount for your child. As a father myself, I know that choosing the right School for your child is a big decision. As Headmaster of Hymers College, I am thrilled to be in the position to be able to write this guide for you. The reputation of Hymers in the local community for offering outstanding academic teaching, excellent facilities and strong pastoral support is second to none. Now, in an incredibly exciting development for Hymers, from September 2022 we will be offering education from Pre-School right through to Sixth Form. Pre-School – Year 2 will be based at what will become Hymers Hessle Mount. Children will then transfer to our Hymers Junior School site without an entrance assessment for Year 3 – Year 6 and then Hymers Senior School, again without an entrance assessment for Year 7 – 13. As an Associate School there is already a strong link between Hessle Mount and Hymers. By bringing Hessle Mount fully into the Hymers family as Hymers Hessle Mount we will build on the immense work of the Cuttings. In doing so we will be investing in the site, in the staff and of course, in the children - giving young children at Hymers Hessle Mount the very best start in life. In this booklet you will find more information about life at Hessle Mount and our plans for the future. Of course though, if you have questions which are not answered, please do make contact. With best wishes, Justin Stanley

Pre-School to Sixth Form education from September 2022

Hymers Hessle Mount
For the first time in its 129 year history Hymers will be providing the complete educational experience from Pre-School to Sixth Form. From September 2022, Hessle Mount School will become Hymers Hessle Mount. Together they will form one School, on two sites, with one clear vision. From September children will be able to join Hymers Hessle Mount from pre-school age through to the end of Year 2. At Year 3 children will transfer to the Hymers College campus for Junior School through to completion of their studies at A Level in the Senior School. Hessle Mount School has enjoyed an excellent reputation under the direction and ownership of the Cutting family for many years. For a long time Hymers has enjoyed a close relationship with Hessle Mount, sharing a common ethos. Indeed, the path to Hymers from Hessle Mount as an Associate School is well-trodden by many children. Until now Hessle Mount has always remained a separate school. Bringing Hessle Mount fully into the Hymers family was the logical step and an exciting opportunity not only for the existing children and parents of the two schools, but for generations to come.
Justin Stanley, Headmaster of Hymers College:
Sarah Cutting, Principal and Co-Proprietor of Hessle Mount:
“I am delighted to announce the expansion of the Hymers community. There is clear demand from local parents for Hymers to offer education for their children from the very early years.
“It has been an absolute privilege to work with so many wonderful children, staff and parents as we have here at Hessle Mount. My family and I shall miss the School greatly.
“As one School, on two sites, with one vision, we are committed to setting the standard for education in the North of England from Pre-School through to Sixth Form.
“However, we are so pleased and comforted to know that, within the Hymers family, Hessle Mount will have an incredible future. We shall enjoy working with Hymers over the coming two terms as we transition to Hymers Hessle Mount and then continue to watch with delight the growth of the School for many years to come.”
“Hymers and Hessle Mount have shared a common ethos for a long time and I am thrilled that, by joining forces, we will be able to offer a top class education to greater numbers of children in the future.”

Taking their first steps… Pre-School Purposeful play features strongly in good Pre-School education. Through observations of children’s learning and interests, staff are guided in the selection of materials and equipment to ensure that, during their play, children encounter the learning experiences that suit their needs. This allows children to be creative, explore and investigate materials, to experiment, problem solve and reason.
“We know it is important for children of all ages to experience a broad and rich curriculum, and have the opportunity to develop interests at an early age.”
Although education is more informal in Pre-School, we have one-to-one phonics and numeracy sessions with each child. We also plan cultural topics to raise awareness of different cultures and traditions.
“It felt like a natural progression to move on to Hymers from Hessle Mount.” MATT 6

We hold our children’s hands until they are ready to run Reception
Year 1
In Reception the curriculum is delivered using a mixture of child-initiated play and adult-led activities. We plan topics based on the children’s interest and adapt the classroom environment accordingly.
In Year 1 we have daily individual reading time, phonic sessions, and engaging fun English lessons. Writing is also taught through a range of engaging topics.
Each day consists of exploring language, literacy, phonics, maths and key topics in the morning and a more creative, playful afternoon. Outdoor learning is very important to us in Reception. We have a dedicated wooded area which we visit weekly to offer the chance to take learning out of the classroom. Information about what the children have been learning and achieving is shared with parents at regular intervals, through our online learning journal, Tapestry. Reception children have the opportunity to take part in some co-curricular activities.
Children will learn the mathematical skills of number, place value, calculations, shape, position and direction, measure and problem-solving. We have filled our curriculum with practical, handson lessons, incorporating outdoor learning which is woven throughout. The Year 1 curriculum also offers trips, special visitors and events which help enhance the children’s early learning and development. In addition, children have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. The Year 1 children receive weekly homework, along with spellings and times tables which are tested in school the following week. We provide children with daily reading books and we encourage parents to read with their child every evening.

“Having been through Hessle Mount as a child it was lovely to return to work at their Summer School and many happy memories came flooding back.” DIYA
Year 2 In Year 2 reading and maths feature in the school day. We promote a love of reading through reading with the children daily to help develop the children’s key comprehension skills. Our maths curriculum is designed carefully to ensure that our children deepen their knowledge and skills and can master them in exciting ways and at greater depth. In Year 2 we broaden our curriculum with a variety of high-quality learning experiences and trips for our children. The children continue to benefit from our wooded areas where they can explore the natural world. The children enjoy music lessons in Year 2 as they learn to play the recorder. Those with particular musical interests are given the opportunity to learn the piano, violin or cello.

“All the friends I made at Hessle Mount are at Hymers, I feel lucky to have life-long friendships.” GAURAV
Moving up to Year 3 at Hymers Junior School When children start Year 3 they begin a new Key Stage in the school curriculum. This is a natural opportunity for our Hymers Hessle Mount children to transition to our Hymers Junior School site for Years 3 to 6. They will do so without the need to sit an entrance assessment. We support all Year 2 children in making this transition to the Junior School as easy as possible. We hold a number of events during the spring and summer terms for Year 2 children to help them become familiar with the Junior School and meet children who are already at the School. These events include: • Dedicated Open Morning at Hymers Junior School • ‘Meet your Buddy’ day • Swim session at Hymers College swimming pool • Orientation day • Induction day • New Parents’ evening Through all of these opportunities, and others, we hope that by the end of Year 2 all children will feel ready and excited to start Year 3 at the Hymers Junior School site.
