Empowering young people to enrich the world 2
Hymers College
Head’s welcome Welcome to Hymers College, a school that values the qualities that make every child unique and aims to develop individual talents and strengths. As a school established more than 125 years ago, we are proud of our heritage and what we have achieved. However, we are keen to innovate and we embrace progress in education, while maintaining our traditional values. This has been very much in evidence during the recent period of lockdown when we delivered a full timetable of online learning with live teaching to all our pupils.
Above all else, at all times we aspire to ensure that our pupils receive an outstanding education. By providing an environment that is both warm and supportive and, at the same time, challenging and stimulating, we encourage all our pupils to fulfil their potential. I am confident that we can make a significant difference to your child’s education and that we can give them the best possible start in life. I hope that you will visit Hymers College to experience first-hand what we have to offer. Justin Stanley, Head of School Hymers College

Our characteristically high standards and expectations create a culture where young people are empowered to excel. This is demonstrated by our consistent outstanding results across all academic disciplines and high uptake of the wide variety of extra-curricular activities we offer. Our inclusive culture is one where it is respected to succeed, whatever the endeavour. Mistakes are not viewed as failures, but as learning opportunities. How do our results compare to other schools?
What facilities do we offer?
What subjects does the curriculum cover?
Our results at GCSE and A Level show that we are one of the highest achieving schools in the North of England and we have consistently remained at the top of Hull and East Riding’s league table.
Situated just a mile from the centre of Hull, our grounds cover 45 acres of land. Within our first-class campus, we have a specialist Art and Design Centre, ICT Centre, theatre, state-of-the-art Stephen Martin Music School with individual music lesson rooms, recently refurbished science laboratories, lecture rooms and an award-winning Learning Resource Centre.
Our curriculum is designed to prepare your child for life beyond school. It gives a comprehensive grounding in key subject areas such as; English, Mathematics and Science as well as the opportunity to discover Humanities, Sports, Music, Creative Arts, Technology and Modern Foreign Languages.
Most of our pupils choose to progress to higher education, almost always to their first choice university. We also have strong success rates in entrance to medical schools and universities with a competitive entry, such as Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and the London universities.
We also offer a sports hall, gym, swimming pool, tennis courts and a floodlit all-weather pitch. Our beautiful and historic heritage, combined with our modern facilities, gives our pupils access to a unique educational experience.
Our curriculum also helps develop key learning skills, such as resourcefulness, resilience, reflectiveness and team work. As your child progresses through school, they will begin to specialise more in subjects of particular interest or ability, having their own choices at GCSE and A Level.
“The fantastic facilities at the school are superb and extracurricular opportunities are key strengths of a Hymers education. Hymers gave me every opportunity to be the best student I could be.” Ben Partridge, Old Hymerian Hymers College

What support will your child receive?
What is life like at Hymers?
How do we communicate with parents?
We are sincere in our commitment to inclusivity and care deeply about the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of our pupils.
We are like an extended family, a community of like-minded, ambitious people where success is championed.
We recognise the importance of communication between teachers and parents when it comes to tracking pupils’ progress.
Our pastoral care network across all year groups allows for individual care and personal attention. As well as supporting pupils through potentially difficult times, our pastoral support includes celebrating them through their triumphs, joys and victories. Children are made to feel secure confiding with their Form Tutors, Heads of Year, our Head of Pastoral Care, Prefects and School Nurses, and have access to a visiting professional Counsellor. Our buddy system gives younger pupils a sixth-form peer to support and guide them. Personal, Social and Health Education lessons also encourage pupils to discuss topics that may affect them.
The beginning of the school day sets the tone. We gather three times a week for school assembly, which gives us the chance to celebrate each other’s many successes. We hear from visiting speakers, staff and pupils, providing opportunities to engage with different cultures and promoting positive attitudes towards other people.
A formal system is in place which includes termly grade cards, academic reports and regular parents’ evenings. On a more informal basis we encourage parents to contact individual members of staff if they have any concerns regarding their child’s happiness and development.
How can you be involved as a parent? Our community is extended to parents as well as pupils. The Hymers College Association (HCA) allows parents to support the school through organising events such as our Garden Party, comedy evenings, Michaelmas Fair and many more. Hymers College

Inspiring the next generation of creatives Design and Technology brings a practical and creative edge to our curriculum, inspiring innovation, critical thinking and problem solving. Pupils learn and develop their designing and making skills through a wide range of traditional and modern methods of manufacturing as well as involvement in national design competitions and real-life challenges. Extra-curricular clubs such as the recycling club, the Vex robotic club and the Greenpower racer continue to capture the
imagination of students of all ages and provide lots of opportunities for them to explore the world of engineering. Students in Greenpower work hard to maintain and develop the car throughout the year and participate in competitive racing events around the country. We are particularly proud of our older students who excel in design or engineering and their continued success in achieving a place on the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship each year.
The Art department is situated on the top floor of the Art and Design Centre where all aspects of Fine Art practice can be accessed by students. Student learning is rooted in projects led by teacher demonstrations, designed to stimulate practical and intellectual development. Familiarity with traditional and digital skills is encouraged at all levels.

Music to your ears The Stephen Martin Music School was built in 2014 to provide first-class music facilities. These facilities consist of music technology and teaching classrooms, a state-ofthe-art chamber concert room with ceiling microphones that link to our recording studio and percussion suite. We also provide 7 individual teaching/practice rooms and appropriate storage facilities for students’ instruments. There is a large range of ensembles including choirs, chamber groups, wind bands, brass groups, orchestras and rock bands, and we encourage pupils to take part in all these extra-curricular music activities. Frequent concerts in school and performances out of school enable students to showcase their talents. We have 12 visiting teachers delivering over 400 lessons a week on strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar, piano and voice. We also offer additional classes in theory and aural preparation to help students progress through the ABRSM examinations, which are held for a week each term in school.

Bringing out the pupils’ competitive spirit through sport is part of our extracurricular programme. Our diverse PE and Games curriculum encourages every child’s participation, whatever their ability.
A number of Old Hymerians have progressed to an elite or representative level in their chosen sport. Sports tours are a regular feature of the calendar and we also host a number of touring teams from overseas.
Pupils who have a particular passion for sport have the opportunity to represent the school and compete against some of the strongest schools in the country at regional and national level. Hymers College

Our students are encouraged to volunteer in the community.
160 Christmas Parcels were collected and distributed around Hull to those in need.

Hymers College
Over the last 3 years our students have raised over ÂŁ21,000 for Emmaus Hull & East Riding.
Giving back to the community Making sure we stay grounded and appreciate our local surroundings is one of our founding principles here at Hymers. Our pupils are encouraged to give something back to the local community through a range of activities outside of the school gates. All year groups work together on projects to raise money for UK and worldwide charities. Recently, we’ve given Christmas parcels to vulnerable children and adults, organised a range of sporting and musical events such as our annual charity carol concert, and even completed a charity skydive. We are the only independent school in the country to be a training provider for the National Citizen Scheme. This scheme, aimed at students aged 15 to 17 from all over the local area, includes a residential outward bound trip and a substantial social action project which benefits the local community. Participating students develop life and work skills and meet some amazing people on their three-week journey. Hymers College
