GENERAL REVIEW Top of the Bench
Hymers College @Hymers_College: Year 5s have been learning about the Celts in their History lessons this term. They wore woad (blue face paints) and created miniature Celtic hillforts in the Forest School area. It was a great afternoon.
Hymers College @Hymers_College: Ten aspiring law students visited Hallmark Solicitors to help the law firm clock up miles as they take on Breast Cancer Now’s ‘Tour de Law’ challenge. Thank you for inviting us to be part of this fantastic fundraising initiative.

Two teams from Hymers entered the Hull and East Yorkshire round of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s national competition - Top of the Bench - for Key Stage 3 and 4 students. The teams were required to design and execute the manufacture of a chemical timer to time exactly three minutes. A successful 2.5 hours of intense team practical activity in the chemical laboratories of the University of Hull represented a major achievement! Judges from the cream of the local chemical industries applied rigorous criteria. The students revelled in the challenge and were notably buzzing at the completion of the test. Congratulations to winning team of Zaid A (Y11), Adam M (Y10), Amelia H and James G (both Y9) and second placed team of Lydia A (Y11), Charlie T (Y10), Aishwarya V and Riya K (both Y9).

Well done to Brandesburton House.
Periodic Table Competition Once again, our Year 8 students have delighted us with their designs for this year’s Periodic Table Competition. They designed and produced a poster to illustrate their assigned element. The completed display can be viewed opposite C2 in the Science Block. The Chemistry Department is delighted and proud of the quality both of many of the entries, and of the visual effect of the table as a whole. We feel that this, the 21st year of the Periodic Table Competition, is probably the best yet.

Our U15 girls’ hockey team and the U14 rugby team, who were both unbeaten, were named Teams of the Term at our final assembly of the year. We love to celebrate the fantastic commitment of all of our sports players and coaches.

Henry ‘Swims with the Stars’! Year 5 student, Henry, took part in the ‘Sprint with the Stars’ event at the end of the summer holidays. It was his first experience of competing in a 50m Olympic sized pool. Henry gave it his absolute all and was delighted with his results, especially securing another British ranked top spot for his age group in the backstroke. Another highlight was meeting David Popovici - the world’s fastest swimmer.

A message from
the Headmaster
Hymers College @HymersSport: The sun was shining and the pitch was immaculate as the Year 3 girls showed their footballing skills. Goals, tackles, skills and lots of tired legs before their very first fixture!
Mr Justin Stanley The Governors and Senior Leadership Team are very aware of the trust that parents invest in the School by choosing to educate their children at Hymers. This is particularly the case in a challenging economic climate. Parents will have different features of their child’s experience at School that they particularly value. Many parents especially appreciate the culture of aspiration and high standards of behaviour that are in evidence to any visitor to Hymers. For others it is the rich diet of co-curricular clubs that allow our pupils to have fun with their friends, to develop expertise and to learn the ‘soft’ skills that will carry them through later life: activities such as sport, music, drama, debating, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and cadets. Some parents value most the fact that their children learn in a safe environment in which they are cared for as individuals and supported by a well-resourced pastoral framework of dedicated and well trained teachers, tutors, nurses and counsellors. For many it is the academic excellence that comes from subject specialist teachers working to bring the best out of classes of pupils who are motivated to learn. Complementing strong academic outcomes, Hymers students in the upper years benefit hugely from dedicated careers guidance and specialist support for their university applications. Focused work experience, frequently thanks to the Old Hymerian network, and regular opportunities to hear directly from former students about their own professional pathway through life are key elements of our Sixth Form experience. For some parents, the leg-up that our pupils get into the competitive world which they are entering is what they see as most valuable about their children’s school days.
House Captains Congratulations to Zara F, Oscar C, Freddie W, Natasha R, Alice B-G, Barnaby A, Lily C and Elliot R-R who have been elected to represent their houses for this academic year.
The School’s excellent learning facilities and spacious and well maintained campus – with acres of green space and both heritage and state-of-the art buildings – are recognised by many parents as a privileged environment in which Hymerians can learn and grow. Some parents do not take for granted that each evening their child comes home from school happy and fulfilled after a productive day’s learning sitting alongside fellow pupils who in some cases will remain friends for life. Of course, for many parents it is a combination of all of these features that lead them to believe that Hymers is an outstanding environment in which their children will thrive and grow both as students and as rounded young people who learn to become the best versions of themselves. Many of us look at our oldest students – our Sixth Formers – and we see in them the qualities that we wish to see in our own children: the quiet confidence and self-esteem, the aspiration and capacity for hard work, the sense of responsibility and sense of humour, the compassion and common sense. Our senior students are a product of a strong relationship between the School and their families, alongside the values which they imbibe and breadth of opportunity which they meet on a daily basis at Hymers. The Governors and staff of Hymers remain committed to providing our excellent pupils the very best education possible. We thank you for your ongoing support.
Hymers College @HymersSport: All Hymerians together! A very entertaining rugby match between the President’s XV and this year’s 1st team. The old boys came out victorious in an excellent contest. We wish them luck for the future. Much to work on, but much promise from the school.
Hymers College @HymersSport: Year 11 student, Jenna, successfully competed at the British Outdoor Slalom Ski Championships in Wales. She achieved third place in the U16 category. She will soon be racing in The Netherlands before a month of training in Austria. Congratulations and good luck Jenna! There has also been good news from the world of cycling as Year 10 student, Millie, won the National Youth Cycling Time Trial championship (GHS Trophy). This follows on from receiving news that she has been selected for the Great Britain Cycling youth team Academy Foundation programme (NSR) for 2023/24. Millie is very much looking forward to representing GB and wearing her kit with pride. Well done Millie!
Voted by Year 6 students, the captains will lead their house for the year contributing to meetings, helping to organise their houses at sports days, swimming galas and being a port of call for younger members of their house. www.hymerscollege.co.uk | 5
Hymers College @Hymers_College: Year 5 enjoyed a virtual visit to the Roald Dahl Museum taking part in an exciting writing workshop, learning how to write in “gobblefunk” and using Dahl’s creative techniques to turn everyday objects into wonderful inventions.
ARTS REVIEW A very ‘Artful Dodger’!
Hymers College @Hymers_College: Some outstanding GCSE painting on display in D block!
We are delighted for Year 8 student, Ram, who has landed the role of Artful Dodger in Leeds Playhouse’s production of Lionel Bart’s Oliver! Ram first auditioned for the role of Oliver but was asked to re-audition for the role of Artful Dodger and will be one of three Dodgers who will play in 24 shows each. Ram says he is loving his role and can’t wait to perform to a live audience! Ram is thankful to Mr Stanley, Dr Bennett and all his teachers for their support as he juggles rehearsals alongside school work. Ram has previously performed with the
British Youth Music Theatre on the worldpremiere of their new production “The Naughty Carriage on The Orphan Train”.
The Great Gatsby Hymers College @Hymers_College: Year 12 created some fabulous large scale drawings on Open Morning. Forced perspective photos were enlarged onto card with an OHP before working on top in mixed media.
Year 12 students were tasked with creating visual representations of symbols from The Great Gatsby novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The novel, set in 1920s Jazz Age in New York, inspired some amazing work.
Christmas Card Design Competition Hymers College @Hymers_College: Year 4 have created amazing graphic books based on The Jabberwocky - fabulous expressive illustrations.

Senior Christmas Charity Concert Our main hall was one again host to a packed audience for our annual Charity Christmas concerrt.
Hymers College @Hymers_College: Our Year 3 students put on a spectacular production of ‘Straw and Order’. They performed their dress rehearsal in front of a packed audience of Year 5 students, plus Years 1 and 2 from Hymers Hessle Mount, before performing in front of their family and friends.
Featuring choirs from both our Junior and Senior schools along with the Senior Wind Band, they created a memorable concert. A terrific night’s entertainment that raised much-needed funds for Emmaus Hull and East Riding. The concert took the form of nine lessons and carols and was a magical evening sure that got everyone into the festive spirit.
A Royal Reply The Time Capsule Club was thrilled to receive a letter from the Palace.
The King replied to them sending their Time Capsule work a recording of their lockdown memories!
Hymers College @Hymers_College: A brilliant performance full of energy by the Year 6 Dance Group at the Yorkshire Schools Dance Festival.
A lovely end to their project.
Junior School Art Year 6 produced their own ‘flat yet sculptural’ drawings of dogs inspired by the work of Lubaiana Himid. Year 3 created drawings and experimented with mark making to create lines, shapes and tone using charcoal. Year 5 explored typography in an intuitive and fun way in their sketchbooks.

Renovations
World Mental Health Day
We are pleased to unveil the renovations that took place over the summer holidays.
Kindness was the key message on World Mental Health Day.
Our main hall now has big windows and access to the new patio and enlarged all-weather play area, the catering kitchen facilitates the provision of hot lunches and two of the classrooms have almost doubled in size.
The children spoke about the differences between their physical and their mental health, learned about the importance of being kind and made little goody bags for each other.
Hymers College @Hymers_College: Hymers Hessle Mount students would like to thank parents for the amazing tractor tyre donation and offers of donations. They have been turned into sand pits and have proven to be very popular in the playground.
A ‘Wriggly Nativity’ on the Road The Reception children wowed us with their ‘Wriggly Nativity’, putting on three matinee shows for pupils, parents, grandparents and family. They also took the songs from their Nativity on the road to perform at our local Tranby Park Care Home.
It was incredible to see their confidence and self-esteem as they delivered their lines loud and clear, sang songs, acted and danced with great enthusiasm. It was lovely to see how proud the parents were and the performances provided much joy to all of their audiences.
