Following the news at the start of the year that Hessle Mount School would become Hymers Hessle Mount, the keys were exchanged and Hymers Hessle Mount has launched, throwing open its doors to our pupils on the first day of Autumn Term.

Our incredible students and sisters Abigail (Y5) and Hannah (Y8) completed a 5K run to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, who continue to support Abigail. They have raised a fantastic £3,485 and everyone in the Hymers community is extremely proud of them! #GOSH

Our Year 13 English and Psychology students took a trip to London to learn more about their A Level subjects. Whilst in London, our psychologists visited the Freud Museum, with our English students watching a production of Henry V at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse!

Year 11 pupil Abia is set to perform a skydive to raise funds for DEC-listed charities that are supporting those affected by the floods in Pakistan. We are very proud of Abia for taking on this incredible initiative!
Following a visit from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) earlier this year, Hymers College was awarded the highest possible rating in a glowing report from the inspection team.
In a report woven together with a multitude of outstandingly positive compliments about the school, its pupils and staff, Hymers achieved the top grade of ‘Excellent’ for both elements of the Educational Quality Inspection. The report found that:
• The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent.
• Pupils display excellent levels of achievement across a wide range of disciplines.
• Pupils display excellent attitudes towards their learning.
• Pupils of all ages have excellent knowledge, skills and understanding, effectively applying these across all subjects.
• Pupils demonstrate excellent communication skills as confident orators and in their writing.
• Pupils demonstrate highly developed study skills which they successfully use to challenge and extend their learning.
It also found that:
• The quality of the pupils’ personal development is excellent.
• Pupils display excellent levels of selfconfidence. They are resilient and take responsibility for their own development in preparation for the next steps in their lives.
• Pupils demonstrate a strong moral awareness and exhibit high standards of behaviour.
• Pupils of all ages are responsible individuals who make strong contributions to their school and the wider community.
ISI Inspection Report: ‘Excellent’, ‘Excellent’ School Charities of the Year chosen
Our Student Council met, with over 30 students in attendance, to review the nominations and vote on our two Charities of the Year for 2022-23.
All of the applications were presented to the students and they voted on the charities they wished to support this year.
We are pleased to announce that our two chosen charities are Cash for Kids and WISHH (Working Independently Supporting Hull Hospitals). During the course of the year we plan to fund-raise with our students in support of these two charities.
• Pupils are highly respectful towards each other and appreciate each other’s differences as well as everyone’s common humanity.

Our Main Hall stage looked incredible as it was filled with over 400 gifts for Viking FM’s Mission Christmas. Run by one of our Charities of the Year, Cash for Kids, these gifts are donated to local children in need. Thank you to all our students for the donations!
Classics and Geography Trip to Sicily
Our Year 11, 12 and 13 students have had an action-packed adventure on their Classics and Geography trip to Sicily. Some of the highlights have included exploring Giardini Naxos Bay, visiting Mount Etna and the statue of Polyphemus, and traditional honey tasting!
Christmas card design competition
The winners of this year’s Senior School Christmas Card competition were announced in December.
Huge congratulations to Ram (Y7) and his winning design of a festive Hymers College scene. Well done also to our runners-up; Amelie, Liv, Noor (all Y8) and Eileen (Y7) and for all the amazing entries.

Many of our Year 9 pupils are well underway in their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze training. They completed their first expedition walk in glorious sunshine, covering 10 miles, before camping overnight and enjoying hot chocolates around the fire pits. Good luck!

Our Year 7 students were visited by debut author @fowler_aisling! Aisling talked about the inspiration behind her book, Fireborn, and held a Q&A session, which was met by lots of eager hands. She also very kindly signed a copy of Fireborn for every Year 7 pupil. Thank you!

Founder’s Day! To mark the 129th anniversary of the opening of Hymers College, Rev. Ian Walker gave an address to the Senior School. Our incredible catering staff made a celebration cake and cupcakes iced in the School House colours for all the students.

U11A Rugby Team Harrison Cup victors

It’s going to be a busy term for Inter-House competitions in the Senior School, and our Year 8 girls competed in Inter-House hockey! It was a lovely day with fiercely contested matches which went down to the last game, with Gore emerging victorious. Well played to all involved!
After an incredible performance just a week or so earlier at the HMC Rugby competition, at which the boys won the trophy for the first time in Hymers’ history, the team made their way across to QEGS Wakefield to participate in the Harrison Cup.
Going into the tournament with a good chance of success, the boys had a tricky start when two of the squad pulled out through illness, leaving us with just 10 players in a 9-a-side tournament. This would mean there would be some very tired legs! Nonetheless, they started fantastically with big performances.

A huge well done to this term’s Junior Sports Award winners. It has been a fantastic term of sport for Hymers, packed with amazing progress and achievement. Well done to everyone for all their efforts!

Hymers fencing team are pictured after their match against Mount St Mary’s. The match finished 4 wins to each school and provided great experience for the fencers from both teams. Thanks to Mr Blight for organising the event.
The final game against QEGS was predictably tense, but the suffocating pressure exerted by our defence kept QEGS pinned down in their own half for the duration and a solitary try was enough to make the difference.
Each and every player conducted themselves superbly all day, demonstrating all the core values of rugby throughout and showing some fantastic skill, pace and power. Consequently, Hymers lifted the Harrison Cup for the first time and rightly earned the plaudits of coaches and supporters alike.
Jenna heads to the mountains
Year 10 student, Jenna, travelled to the mountains in November to compete in slalom, giant slalom and super giant slalom skiing events.
She has also represented Hymers College, achieving a silver medal for U16 and coming third overall in the UK National Schools Outdoor Open Championships. In the summer she came first for her year of birth in the British Indoor Championships. She will be training and racing this winter, based initially in Norway then moving to Austria. It is a full on program with ski training in the mornings and school work in the afternoons, as well as fitness training on top.

Hull Champions 2022! Congratulations to our 1st VII Netballers, who are Hull Champions after a fantastic win against Wyke College yesterday. Well done girls, a superb performance!
This edition of the Hymers Review demonstrates how our pupils continue to excel in a wide range of co-curricular activities alongside their studies. What the text and images can perhaps less easily convey is just what fine young people they are too.
Children do, of course, get things wrong – just as we all do - and school is a place where they should be able to make mistakes and learn the consequences of their actions in a safe and supportive environment. Visitors to Hymers or people who come across our students in other settings almost invariably comment favourably on the consideration, good manners and kindness that they demonstrate as well their sense of responsibility. One of those visitors was Baroness Sayeeda Warsi who was an inspirational guest of honour at our Senior School Speech Day at City Hall. We are extremely fortunate to be able to attract such high profile figures to speak to our school community.
We are equally fortunate to have at Hymers staff such as Andrew Penny who for so long shared his singular musical talent, wit and warmth with us. After 45 years during which he combined his teaching commitments at Hymers with his professional commitments as Director of the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew now puts down his conductor’s baton. We wish him a long and happy retirement.
GB selection for Millie
Congratulations to Millie in Year 10 who has made the selection for the British Cycling regional school of racing - a fantastic achievement!
Millie’s selection was based on the talent development teams judgement of Millie’s talent and potential from her recent achievements.
While inevitably over time some things change, much about Hymers remains the same. We continue to strive to be a school of high academic standards and creativity which offers a board range of opportunities through which our pupils can grow into the best versions of themselves. I hope that for the most part our pupils look forward to coming to school for the purposeful activity and camaraderie that they enjoy here.
These are features that were noted by the team of visitors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) last summer. It was gratifying to be able to share their outstanding report with the Hymers community at the start of term.
However, in terms of historic significance for the school, the 2022 Autumn Term was most notable for the opening of Hymers Hessle Mount. For the first time since our foundation in 1893 we are now educating children from the age of 3 years and offering an all-through education to our pupils until they leave us at 18. It is apparent that this is something that parents have wanted for some time and, after a busy summer of refurbishment, it was wonderful to welcome pupils and parents to the school at the start of term. I am extremely grateful to Mr Copeland and his hardworking staff team who have made the first term such a great success.

It was a great day of sport against @PockSchool on Saturday, which saw nine hockey and eight rugby teams representing Hymers. Our First XV Rugby also successfully retained the President’s Cup and enjoyed mixing with the Pocklington players after the match. Well played everyone!

Our fantastic Year 6 Choir enjoyed a trip to Edinburgh over the weekend, during which they produced a wonderful performance in St Giles’ Cathedral to a large audience! A huge well done to all of our pupils for being excellent representatives of the School.

House Music Competition

Our Year 3 and Year 4 students have been channelling their creativity as it was Lego Day in the Junior School. They have spent their workshops building some fantastic creations, working together in teams.
After days of rehearsals and an exciting two days of competition for soloists and bands, Gore was announced as the firstever winner of the House Music Cup in our Senior School!
Early in November we held the first ever House Music Competition.
An amazing total of 82 students took part in the event, performing music from all styles and genres and earning points for their Houses.
The House Music Classes were adjudicated by Mr R Mitchell from East Riding Music Service. Students performed
to each other and the adjudicator and then received feedback and the results. Mrs Fong and Mr Mitchell were treated to a day of superb music making, thank you to all students that performed.
Congratulations to Ann, Gracie, Daniel, Anay, Martha, Chris, Rhea, Xavier and Soala for achieving first place in their respective classes.

Students from our Senior Chamber Choir performed in Hull Minster with the Gabrieli Consort for the ROAR project, supporting younger students and singing in a stage choir with the Gabrieli Consort performing Music by Praetorius and Schutz. What a fabulous experience!
Recital Evening
It was wonderful to welcome Old Hymerian and soprano soloist Beth Mackay to our Recital Club in November. She was joined by Richard Quick on violin and Andrew Penny on clarinet with accompanist Lester Bartlett for a feast of song and chamber music.
Andrew Penny was performing in his last Hymers concert before retiring in December.
Donations were taken for our school charities of the year.

At Hymers Hessle Mount we hold assembly on a Friday when we celebrate the successes of our children over the week. Here are our Year 2 children who received certificates last Friday for super work and for following the school CARE Code by showing kindness to others. Well done!
