Hymers College Sixth Form
Independence, maturity & leadership These are just three of the qualities that students will take away with them after their time in our Sixth Form. In the Sixth Form students are able to take on new responsibilities and challenges, and enjoy greater independence with their studies and time management. They will be encouraged to exceed what is expected of them and leave with the skills to equip them for their next endeavours. Sixth Form students are encouraged to make the most of our extensive extra-curricular programme which includes a whole host of activities both in
school and out in the locality. Supporting and giving back to the community is an important part of the ethos of Hymers College and our students are involved in a number of projects, from listening to children read in several local primary schools, to collecting toys and games for vulnerable children. Sixth Formers are invited to join the School Council and we select Prefects who act as ambassadors of the school and as supporters of those in the younger years. Sixth Form students also have the opportunity to participate in our buddy system, which provides individual peer guidance to those students in the years below. Hymers College Sixth Form

Our dedicated Sixth Form Centre has its own Junior Common Room, dining facility, computer suites, study areas and socialising hubs. There are also screens showing important notices and Sixth Form news. Students are encouraged to use our Learning Resource Centre, which has areas conducive to silent study and independent learning, a skill required for University life and further education. We also encourage a variety of learning methods for Sixth Form pupils, including weekly lectures from exciting external speakers ranging from a Holocaust survivor to hypnotist Martin Taylor. Extracurricular We encourage our students to be busy and make the most of all the activities we have on offer, of which there are many. In addition to the creative arts and sports activities we have timetabled, we provide a Sixth Form specific extra-curricular programme for our students to become involved in. Our pupils also enjoy a variety of field trips throughout their time in the Sixth Form. Recently, these have included a Physics trip to Switzerland, Biology trip to Cranedale and CatZero yachting expedition. In addition, our senior sports squads have the opportunity to go on tour to destinations in the UK and abroad. The most recent trip took our hockey, rugby and netball teams on a tour to South Africa. Our students in Years 12 & 13 have enjoyed recent national recognition in a number of areas including National Schools Badminton Championships, ISGA Finalists, National Squash Trophy Finalists, National Representation for Science Olympiads, National Engineering Finalists, Cambridge Schools Debating Competition Finalists and Winners of the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship to name but a few. 6

Life after Hymers With the specialist support from our UCAS advisors and Sixth Form tutors, our students are given excellent advice to guide them through the challenging world of university admissions. Students and parents gain valuable information and advice at our annual UCAS Information Evening and students take the opportunity to enhance their application with a programme of visits, taster events, independent research and open days. We have a second-to-none individual UCAS Support Programme in place to make sure all students get the support and help they need while applying for University. Most students will progress to their first choice University and thrive in further study. If University is not their desired path, we will guide them on their journey to a successful career including degree apprenticeships with expertise from our Careers Advisor, and network of local business owners. Admissions Entry to Sixth Form Admission to our Sixth Form for external applicants is dependent on a minimum of five excellent GCSEs, which should include those subjects that are to be pursued at A Level. All external applicants will be interviewed by the Head of School and will sit an online test in Verbal, Numerical and Non-Verbal Reasoning. These assessments will test academic potential independent of GCSE results.
