Message from the Head
We very much hope parents had an enjoyable and relaxing time on the weekend of 27th - 29th January as a result of Year 6 Leadership Club’s preparations for Parent Mental Health Day. Members of the club have been busy this year, for example leading Children in Need activities at Hymers Hessle Mount and running stalls at the Michaelmas Fair; so it was no surprise to see the enthusiastic and determined way they approached this initiative. Hymers is very fortunate to have a wonderful, hugely supportive parent community and it was fantastic to see the Junior School children so keen to show their gratitude to their parents and to give somethingback.
We hope you enjoy reading this first 2023 edition of the Junior Monthly Messenger. Mrs Rowland has made an excellent start as Head of Junior School Art since joining the team at the beginning of this term. Details about the children’s areas of study in Art can be seen on page 3, along with photographs of some of the impressive artwork they have produced.
Peter Doyle, Head of Junior SchoolParent Mental Health Day
On Friday 27th January, the Junior School took part in Parent Mental Health Day! Our wonderful Year 6 Leadership Club set up stands with vouchers for free hugs, scented candles, biscuits, tea and popcorn for a movie night as well as much more for our students to take home for their parents. A huge thank you to the Leadership Club for organising this and we hope all of our parents had a lovely and relaxing weekend!
Feel the Force!
Class 5H are currently looking at Forces in Science. We have been tasked to 'build' a new toy race ramp for Smyths Toy shop. We are testing to see which material creates the best friction to slow the toy car down.

Our new Art teacher, Mrs Rowland, has been really impressed with thework all the children have been producing in Art.
Year 3 have started the term exploring artwork by Joan Miro and Henri Matisse. By cutting shapes directly into paper, the pupils have begun to create collaborative collages based on Miro’s painting ‘The Tilled Field’.
Year 4 are exploring the work of artists who work within the still life genre. They have created ink drawings of fruit and vegetables in their sketchbooks.
Year 5 have been using their sketchbooks to generate ideas, develop mark making and reflect on the work of artists who create monotypes. They have begun to make their own zine.
Year 6 have used their observational skills to develop their mastery of drawing, focusing on the head and hands. They have discussed the work of artists who create layered portraits exploring identity.
