Message from the Head This edition of the Messenger reflects the exciting and extremely busy final few weeks of the academic year in the Junior School. It was wonderful to see so many parents and friends joining us at Speech Day to celebrate the children’s achievements and endeavours of the past year. The Year 6 cohort has made super progress, both individually and collectively, over the past three years and Speech Day saw them formally graduate from the Junior School … we wish them all every future happiness and success as they move on to the next stage of their education. The Year 6 Leadership Club ran a highly successful Charity Day at the end of June in aid of Unicef UK’s Ukrainian Appeal. It is testament to their leadership skills and to the wonderful giving spirit of the Hymers community that over £2000 was raised for this important cause. In September, Mr Copeland will take on the role of Interim Head at Hymers Hessle Mount. Mr Copeland has been an outstanding Team Leader on the Junior School Leadership Team and we are all looking forward to working closely with him and his team at Hymers Hessle Mount next year at this significant and exciting time in the development of Hymers. It just remains for me to wish you all a restful and very enjoyable Summer.
Peter Doyle, Head of Junior School
All of the children in Year 6 took part in the Disney classic in the Judi Dench theatre in June. Performed on two nights, each class got to take on half the show each ensuring everyone got a part. There were four Aladdins, Jasmines and Genies! It was the first time many had performed in front of a live audience and all the cast did brilliantly with this difficult show. The play was exciting and thrilling. Dominic My favourite part of the show was when we all got engulfed in a cloud of smoke. Harry The singing was the best of the best—it helped people’s confidence so much. Rocco This is the first time I have had such a huge amount of lines and a solo before in a play. Doing this has made me more confident in drama and performing and I hope to do a play just like this again. Jasmine Doing something like this helps me with public speaking, presentations, confidence and will encourage me to do more plays in the future. Eileen
It made a good end to our time in the Junior School. Isobel Aladdin was amazing to everyone because it brought us together. The best bits were ‘Arabian Nights.’ Ethan sang ‘Proud of Your Boy’ making Mrs Redhead a bit teary! Thank you to Miss McLeod, Mrs Redhead and all the sound and lighting directors. Chiara
Llangollen International Eisteddfod The Year 6 Choir travelled to Wales to take part in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod on the 7th July. After having a fun time bowling the day before, the choir took to the stage with confidence in their biggest ever performance. They sang the difficult 3 part song Migaloo with feeling followed by a lively rendition of Jabberwocky. After the performance, Mrs Redhead was interviewed for TV whilst the choir sang World in Union. Although not placed on this occasion, the choir had a wonderful experience and it was a fitting end to their time in the Junior School Choir. A video of the performance can be found here: https://llangollen.tv/home/junior-childrenschoirscorau-plant-iau/ A huge well done to the 27 boys and 21 girls in the choir—I will miss you! Mrs Redhead
Cleethorpes Music Festival
Yorkshire Wildlife Park The Year 4 children had a great time at the YorkshireWP in the sunshine. They were superstars throughout the day and clocked up over 20,000 steps.
The Year 4 and Year 5 Choirs travelled to Cleethorpes to take part in their first competition. The Year 4 Choir won the Sam Chapman Shield for Junior Choirs and the Year 5 Choir won the Robert Frayne Challenge Shield for Junior Choir Hymn Singing. Well done!
French Biscuits Year 5 enjoyed tasting these legendary biscuits from Nantes and learning how each biscuit is actually ‘un calendrier Breton’. Did you know? The 52 teeth represent the weeks in a year. The 24 dots represent the hours in a day. Each biscuit is 7cm in length to represent the days of the week. The 4 corners represent the seasons.

Events included sponge the teacher, a novelty mile and making the Ukrainian flag out of coins. The events got underway in the morning when ‘Wrong Direction’ (otherwise known as the Junior School staff) performed a surprise dance routine to all the children. A great day, for a worthwhile cause, was had by all.

Tuesday 5th July saw the Junior School hold the first full Speech Day for three years. Held in the Main Hall in front of parents, there were performances by the Year 6 Choir and Dashenka, who performed a cello solo, as well as a speech from Mr Stanley. Mr Doyle’s entertaining speech, which included many references to goats, was followed by the presentation of internal and external awards. Prizes were awarded for academic subjects as well as Endeavour and Ethos. Well done to all those who won prizes and congratulations to Year 6 who all received graduation certificates.
