GENRE blast! ...

This month’s ‘Genre Blast’ is linked with the ‘Feel Good Book Challenge’, heart-warming books to lift your spirits!

ODD FACT... THE MOST EXPENSIVE BOOK EVER PURCHASED WAS SOLD FOR $30.8 MILLION. IT WAS CODEX LEICESTER BY LEONARDO DA VINCI AND IT WAS PURCHASED BY BILL GATES.

PRIDE MONTH In recognition of Pride Month, Mrs Mason designed a beautiful display. Celebrated every June, Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots of 1969 which ignited the gay rights movement. Hymers is proud to be a part of the celebrations.

Here is a selection of books available from the LRC.

STUDENT Checkouts @ the lrc Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Review by Kira Sharaz in 12L “The time old tale of enemies to lovers, with a sprinkle of magic makes for a book you can’t put down. Utterly captivating!.”

THE MONARCH METHOD To continually adapt and change to the needs of the students, the non-fiction area is currently being changed to a ‘Book Store’ model, based on the Monarch High Schools, Monarch Method. We remotely visited the library in Colorado and heard about how the number of checkouts had doubled in the last four years to 9,797. Over 65,000 students visited in the last school year up from 23,000.... The hope is by changing the way the non-fiction books are organised, by becoming more user-friendly, it will make the library a welcoming place for all students, not just the high end users. It will make books easy to find, both for research and for pleasure reading.

Feel Good Book Challenge It’s time to soak up the sunshine and escape with lots of great summer reading! Read and review a minimum of 5 books to be in for a chance to win a £25 or £50 Waterstones voucher. To enter check out the LRC page on the Hymers College Website. Closing date 31/08/2021.

by Mrs Pennack

This was the library in 1995, a very small room next to the even smaller careers room. The library was staffed by voluntary students who rushed across in their morning and lunch breaks after lessons to help. This was a technology-free zone and all the books were manually stamped with an ink date stamp called the Browne System. This was when the librarian took one of the readers’ borrowing cards and removed the book’s own card. The two cards were then filed together and the date was stamped in the book. These card tickets were organised in trays, by date of issue. No computers! When the book was returned, the user’s card was removed from the file of the day indicated by the stamp and given back, and the book card was replaced in the book. Whilst the filed cards revealed which user had a particular book, or which books a particular reader had

borrowed, this was only true whilst the loan continued. Afterwards no record of the transaction remained. The library was shelves of books with a handful of tables to seat approx. 30, with not a comfy LRC sofa in sight. You were not allowed to talk and it was a silent zone only. There were no lessons held here and Accelerated Reading and Year 7 reading lessons did not exist.
