It has been a busy half term here in the Junior School. We hope you enjoy reading this month’s edition of the Messenger.
Year 6 Trip to Windermere
Children in Year 6 had a fantastic few days in Windermere, experiencing a variety of activities in the great outdoors! They enjoyed Pico sailing, raft building, canoeing, night line, obstacle course, a fell walk, high ropes, king swing, archery as well as other activities which promoted team building. Many thanks to Mrs Julian, Mrs Redhead, Mrs Fillingham, Mr Hodsdon and Mr Whitehead for their hard work to make this trip happen. More photos inside this issue.
Windermere 2024
I loved Windermere!! I found all the activities highly enjoyable! I found that this trip helped me out of my comfort zone. Although I was hesitant to even get my feet wet, I ended up going waist deep in the water and didn’t even mind! All the staff at YMCA Lakeside are so kind and funny; they will encourage you to do anything. My personal favourite was the King Swing because I ended up going upside down on it! I feel like I have learned a lot from this experience and would highly recommend it to friends and family.

Year 4 Trip to East Barnby
Our incredible Year 6 Dance Group, led byMrs Marsden, took part inthe regional round of the Great Big Dance Off, held in Halifax. They performed a very emotional piece based on refugees to Kate Bush’s ‘Running up that Hill’. They were against stiff competition and only three groups could progress to the National Final but, amazingly, they were delighted to come second and their place in the final was secured. They perform in Oxford on June 19th. We wish them all the best of luck!
Hymers Junior School has introduced a onenight residential visit for children in Year 4 and this year.Thechildren went to East Barnby where they took part in a variety of outdoor, adventurous activities and had a wonderful time. Many thanks to MrsGriffith,Mrs Walmsley, Mr Newton, Mr Hodsdon and Mrs Fillingham for their hard work.

Hull Music Festival
Chamber Concerts
Children who learn a musical instrument or who have vocal lessons, were given the opportunity to perform to their parents in two Chamber Concerts, one for children in Years 3 and 4, and one for children in Years 5 and 6. There was a fantastic variety of performances from piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, guitar, drums and voice. Very well done to all our young musicians.
Well doneto the Year 5 and Year 4 Choirs who came first and second in the Hull Music Festival, gaining excellent marks and feedback.

Hoodwinked
All the children in Year 5 took part in the musical production of Hoodwinked and performed in the Judi Dench Theatre to appreciative audiences. The story of Robin Hood had a fresh retelling but included all the well known characters such as the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham, Maid Marian as well as some greedy friars! There were some amazing soloists and some fabulous acting. A huge thank you to Miss Annis and Mrs Redhead who directed theshow.
Art
Year 3 have started the summer term developing their understanding of how artists use sketchbooks. They have been making visual notes, drawing in the style of Quentin Blake and testing materials.Itis wonderfulto seetheir ideas come alive!
Year 4 thought about how composition can make their artwork interesting when bringing together the elements of their still life. Inspired by Cezanne, the children’s compositions have created a colourful corner in theArt room.
Amazing architecture is the inspiration for Year 5’s sculptural work. Observing aspirational architectural homes, the children have created wonderful line drawings looking at how line, shape and form make architecture interesting.
Just before the Easter break, Year 6 put the final additions on their self-portraits. Using various media, the children have created personal portraits to show aspects of their self.Don’t they look fantastic?
Brave colour and its transformative power is the focus for the summer term. The children went for a walk to see how street art uplifts and unites communities and will be working alongside a local street artist on designing a mural for the school. Keep an eye out for updates on this exciting project.
Science
5H started their Summer term science topic of 'Plant Life cycles'. In the science lab, they used dissecting tools to find the different parts of a flower. All of the children had fun observing a flower in such detail and learnt new skills from using thescience equipment.
5H finished their renewable energy science topic this term by spending the morning outside investigating the power of solar energy. They each constructed their own solar oven and enjoyed a tasty smore, which they "cooked" themselves!
House Swimming Gala
There was some impressive swimming as both Year 3 and Year 2 students showcased their skills in the pool. Year 2 did exceptionally well in their first swim gala displaying confidence in their performance. Additionally, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 delivered remarkable performances and fabulous progress on the day. Holderness emerged with a victory at the Junior School Swim Gala, while Romy and Henry stood out with their record-breaking swim for Hymers.
Many thanks to Mr Mills and Mrs Farr for all their hard work.
Sport
Our U10 football team won the Hull Active Schools 5-a-side qualifiers and will play in the finals! The Year 4 team narrowly missed out on progressing further. Very well done to both teams!
Congratulations to the Spring Term Sports Trophy winners.
Swimming Stars!
Four of our Year 5 girls represented the school in the East Park Fun Run, a 2.2km race. Great going, girls!
There was more success for our swimmers at the ESSAs. The girls Freestyle placed 3rd and the Medley relay came 4th. The boys took home two gold medals in the Freestyle and the Medley relay. This means that the boys Freestyle and Medley teams and the girls Freestyle team have qualified for the National Finals. Amazing!
Book Fair
Hands on History
Year 5 enjoyed a visit to Hull’s Museum Quarter where they had an interactive session about the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. They handled precious artefacts and even made their own embossed brooches!
A huge thank you to parents and children for supporting the Scholastic Book Fair. Book sales totaled £1832.43. This means a rewards value of £1099 for us to spend on new reading books for the Junior School library. To promote reading for pleasure, the children will be given the opportunity to choose the books that they would like to see on the library shelves from the extensive Scholastic catalogue.
A reminder that 3 books by Guy Bass are available to buy through Parent Pay with the deadline of Monday 3rd June (4pm). The books cannot be found cheaper on Amazon. Guy will sign at least one (more if there is time) on the day.
